Supermarket plastic bags are produced by high density polyethylene (HDPE) and low density polyethylene (LDPE) resins. In Brazil, are produced annually around 150 plastic bags per capita. Disposed in landfills, the supermarket plastic bags prevent the passage of water by slowing the breakdown of biodegradable materials and hindering compaction of waste, according to their low degradability. This work investigated the biodegradation of PE bags containing additive oxo-biodegradable and bags without additives: buried in soil columns, exposed in a controlled environment and exposed to air. The analysis methods used to assess the changes brought in the bags with respect to microbial action and exposure time were weight loss, thickness measurement, infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and contact angle. The results showed that the use of prodegradant agents such as oxobiodegradable additives in polyethylene bags, buried in soil for 270 days, was not efficient to accelerate the biodegradation by microorganisms. It seems that these additives have been more efficient to degrade the colored pigmentation of printed bags, under the influence of light and heat.

Aspects are discussed on the chirality of drugs and their action in the human body, the benefits of using a drug in enantiomerically pure form and why, even today, despite the risks, many drugs are marketed as racemic mixture. Among the methods of separation there is the High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) which can be given in different ways using chiral additives in the mobile phase as in the system of ligand exchange in the ion pair system and the system of cavity or inclusion. Note also the wide variety of chiral stationary phases available in the market that allow high specificity using them according to the need and purpose of the method. The review of the topic is extremely important since it is a matter of public interest world that brings into play issues and financial policies

The wood of the gender Eucalyptus occupies a prominence place in relation to other cellulose sources, due to its chemical composition, its low cost, abundance and availability. The dissolving pulp obtaining occurs basically starting from three stages: prehydrolysis of the wood following by cooking and finally by the bleaching process. In the dissolving pulp production is necessary a pretreatment stage for the hemicelluloses removal. Among the chemical cooking processes, the Kraft process is the most used for cellulosic pulps production starting from eucalyptus, in the additive presence or not. The anthraquinone uses in the pulping process has as main purposes increasing the delignification rate as well as protecting the pulp regarding the degradation of the polysaccharide chains. The ECF bleaching process consists of the purification of the pulp through bleaching agents, being excepted the elementary chlorine. The dissolving pulp is a pulp of high a-cellulose content and purity destined to the cellulose derivatives production as carboxymethyl cellulose, nitrocellulose and microcrystalline cellulose. The production of a certain product, as well as its final application, is determined by the chemical properties of the pulp. The present work had as purpose producing cellulosic pulp with kappa number around 9 destined to the production of dissolving pulp in way to evaluate the use of the anthraquinone (AQ) in the Kraft process according to the chemical properties of the obtained pulps. It has been still intended developing an effective technology of bleaching for the high purity and quality dissolving pulp production. The prehydrolysis was accomplished in laboratory rotational autoclave for 30 minutes at 170ºC in the water:wood rate 3,5:1 (L:kg). The research involving new materials has always been considered as a differential in the development of a technology company. This occurred naturally since ancient times, often motivated by reasons of a certain age, where the most common material used was also the name of your time and may be cited as an example the Bronze Age, and later was the Iron. Currently, the use of firearms are they used in resolving conflicts between countries, or a more equivocal, as an instrument of social banditry make innovations in the area of shielding welcome, whether for personal use, in the form of vests or vehicle such as cars, tanks and even aircraft. In this context, is a Silicon Carbide Ceramic, with low density and high hardness. Thus, the aim of this study is the evaluation and comparison of these materials, seeking to improve their properties by means of additives such as boron and silicon metal and amorphous YAG. For this work, the specimens were pre-shaped by means of uniaxial later to be referred for isostatic pressing and sintering. The maximum percentage for each additive was 5%, except for the YAG whose percentage was 8.2% (mass percentage). All compositions were subjected to the same tests (x-ray diffraction, apparent density, optical microscopy, Vickers hardness, scanning electron Microscopita), so that one could draw a comparison between the materials under study, samples that showed better mechanical properties and micro structural, related here by hardness testing and microscopy (optical and SEM) were the silicon carbide doped with YAG and alumina samples, demonstrating the potential of these materials for ballistic protection. Other compositions have high porosity, which is highly undesirable, since in order to harmful influences on the mechanical properties discussed below

As lipases (triacilglicerol acil hidrolases, E.C. 3.1.1.3) constituem uma classe de enzimas que catalisam a hidrólise de ligações ésteres dos triacilgliceróis de cadeia longa, operando na interface óleo/água. Em meios orgânicos, dependendo da quantidade de água, essas enzimas podem catalisar reações de esterificação e transesterificação, atuando como biocatalisadores da síntese de óleos e gorduras. As lipases destacam-se em processos industriais, nos quais são utilizadas como aditivos na produção de detergentes, de papel e celulose, na indústria de laticínios, de cosméticos, entre outros. As lipases microbianas são de maior interesse para aplicação em biotecnologia e em química orgânica, sendo necessária a prospecção de novas fontes de lipases com propriedades distintas. O presente trabalho avaliou a influência de diferentes meios de cultura, do tempo de cultivo, de fontes de carbono e sua concentração, de fontes de nitrogênio, agitação, pH e temperatura sobre a produção de lipase extracelular pelo fungo filamentoso Penicillium janthinellum, isolado de solo de região de Mata Atlântica. A avaliação das melhores condições de cultivo foi realizada através da análise da atividade enzimática, acompanhada pela determinação do íon ρ-nitrofenol liberado na hidrólise do substrato sintético ρ- nitrofenil palmitato. Os experimentos foram realizados em frascos de Erlenmeyer de 125mL contendo 25mL de meio de cultivo, inoculados com 1mL de suspensão contendo 107 conídios, e incubados a 28°C com agitação de 160 rpm e pH 5,5. Entre os quatro meios de cultura testados, o melhor resultado (0,476 ± 0,04 U/mL), com 5 dias de cultivo, foi verificado com o meio 2 composto por (g/L): bacto-peptona 5,0, extrato de levedura 1,0, NaNO3 0,5, KCl 0,5, MgSO4·7H2O 0,5, KH2PO4 2,0 e azeite de oliva 10,0)... Cheeses are known to be sources of calcium, phosphorus and protein, important nutrients for a suitable nutrition. However, certain cheeses imply the ingestion of large amounts of fats, which can cause the development of coronary heart and carcinogenic diseases. Although consumers are aware of the necessity of reducing the fats intake, they are still not pleased with the quality of light cheeses available on the market, because the partial or total fat removal provides some undesirable changes, especially regarding to the product texture and flavor. In order to offer products nutritionally adequate and palatable, alternatives have been developed to improve the characteristics of light cheeses. Such alternatives include the use of fat substitutes, those additives that improve the functional and sensory characteristics of cheeses with reduced fat. Fat substitutes composed of proteins, carbohydrates and lipids, or a combination of them, help the retention of moisture and eliminate the undesirable characteristics of fat reduced-cheeses. In this context, this review aims at reporting the innovations and trends on the use of fat substitutes to produce light cheeses.

Inúmeros são os trabalhos versando sobre a contaminação de águas e solos por metais potencialmente tóxicos, ou metais pesados. O destaque sempre é dado para chumbo, mercúrio e, mais recentemente, cádmio que, também é, comprovadamente, carcinogênico. Em contrapartida, estudos sobre a toxicidade do manganês são raros devido, provavelmente, ao fato do mesmo ser um metal essencial à vida. Porém, absorvido em doses elevadas pelo organismo, pode provocar uma série de patologias e disfunções, algumas muito graves como déficit intelectual. Nesse trabalho procurou-se avaliar a concentração de manganês em amostras de solos cultivados e não cultivados de várias regiões do Estado de São Paulo. Surpreendentemente, algumas dessas amostras apresentaram teores até cinco vezes mais elevados do que o limite estabelecido como alto pelo Governo do Estado de São Paulo (que é de 5 mg/dm³). A provável fonte desse excesso reside na liberação de produtos de combustão e/ou na forma de aditivos aos combustíveis.

As bebidas lácteas fermentadas são produtos formulados contendo iogurte, soro de leite, polpa de frutas, além de outras matérias-primas e aditivos permitidos. O produto final deve apresentar os micro-organismos de forma viável e abundante. Sua popularidade vem aumentando significativamente, principalmente devido aos seus benefícios nutricionais, ao menor custo do produto para o fabricante, à redução do preço final para o consumidor e por apresentar baixa viscosidade, sendo consumida como bebida suave e refrescante. Apesar do processo de fabricação ser considerado simples, utilizando-se principalmente os equipamentos disponíveis nas indústrias lácteas, estes produtos podem estar sujeitos à contaminação microbiana, quando não atendidas as condições elementares de higiene e sanidade. Tal contaminação pode ser representada por leveduras, coliformes totais, termotolerantes e bolores. Considerando os aspectos mencionados, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade microbiológica de bebidas lácteas fermentadas, com adição de polpas de frutas, comercializadas na região de São José do Rio Preto û SP, por meio das seguintes análises microbiológicas: contagem de bolores e leveduras, determinação do Número Mais Provável (NMP) de coliformes totais, temotolerantes e pesquisa de Escherichia coli e de Salmonella spp. Foi ainda efetuada a determinação do pH eletrométrico. Após a obtenção dos resultados verificou-se que 20% das amostras analisadas não atenderam ao padrão microbiológico estabelecido na legislação vigente, para coliforme termotolerentes, evidenciando positividade na pesquisa de Escherichia coli, sendo por este motivo, considerados como produtos em condições sanitárias insatisfatórias, portanto, produtos impróprios para o consumo humano.(AU)

The need for development of new materials is a natural process in the companies’ technological point of view, seeking improvements in materials and processes. Specifically, among the materials, ceramic exhibit valuable properties, especially the covalent ceramics which have excellent properties for applications which requires the abrasion resistance, hardness, high temperatures, resistence, etc. being a material that has applications in several areas. Most studies are related to improvement of properties, specially fracture toughness that allows the expansion of its application. Among the most promising ceramic materials are silicon nitride (Si3N4) which has excellent properties. The goal of this work was the development and caracterization of Si3N4-based ceramics, doped with yttrium oxide (Y2O3), rar earth concentrate (CTR2O3) and cerium oxide (CeO2) in the same proportion for the evaluation of properties. The powders' mixtures were homogenized, dried and compressed under pressure uniaxial and isostatic. Sintering was carried out in 1850 ⁰C under pressure of 0,1MPa N2 for 1 h with a heating rate of 25 ⁰C / min and cooling in the furnace inertia. The characterizations were performed using Archimedes principle to relative density, weight loss by measuring before and after sintering, phase analysis by X-ray diffraction, microstructure by scanning electron microscope (SEM), hardness and fracture toughness by the method Vickers indentation. The results obtained showed relative density of 97-98%, Vickers hardness 17 to 19 GPa, fracture toughness 5.6 to 6.8 MPa.m1/2, with phases varying from α-SiAlON and β-Si3N4 depending the types of additives used. The results are promising for tribological applications and can be defined according to the types of additives to be used

Enzyme stabilization is one critic point in basic and applied enzymology. The increasing interest in applying enzymes in industrial processes has fostered the search for biocatalysts with new properties or extreme stability. Enzyme stabilization can be achieved by different methods: isolating enzyme variants from organisms living in appropriate extreme environments (extremozymes), by protein engineering, chemical modification, use of additives, immobilization. This brief review aims to give a better understanding of those methods employed for enzyme stabilization.
