There is a drop in the flutter boundary of an aeroelastic system placed in a transonic flow due to compressibility effects and is known as the transonic dip. Viscous effects can shift the lo-cation of the shock and depending on the shock strength the boundary layer may separate leading to changes in the flutter speed. An unsteady Euler flow solver coupled with the structural dynamic equations is used to understand the effect of shock on the transonic dip. The effect of various system parameters such as mass ratio, location of the center of mass, position of the elastic axis, ratio of uncoupled natural frequencies in heave and pitch are also studied. Steady turbulent flow results are presented to demonstrate the effect of viscosity on the location and strength of the shock.

Insertion reactions of six-membered cyclopalladated N,N',N''-triarylguanidines, kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(mu-Br)](2) with various alkynes in CH2Cl2 under ambient conditions afforded diinserted eight-membered palladacycles, (kappa(2)(C,N):eta(2)(C=C)-PdBr] (1-11), in high yield (76-96%), while insertion reactions of six-membered cyclopalladated N,N',N''-triarylguanidines, kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(Lewis base)Br] (VI-XI), with various alkynes under the aforementioned conditions afforded monoinserted six-membered palladacycles, kappa(2)(C,N)-Pd(Lewis base)Br] (12-21), in high yield (81-91%) except for 14 (23%). The insertion reaction of VI with 2 equiv of dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) and the insertion reaction of 12 with 1 equiv of DMAD in CH2Cl2 under ambient conditions resulted in the formation of a diinserted zwitterionic five-membered palladacycle, kappa(2)(C,C)Pd(2,6-lutidine)Br] (22), in 76% and 70% yields, respectively. Palladacycle 22 upon reaction with AgOTf in wet MeCN afforded the ionic palladacycle kappa(2)(C,C)Pd(2,6-lutidine)(H2O)]OTf] (23) in 78% yield. The ring size of the ``kappa(2)(C,N)Pd]'' unit in the structurally characterized diinserted palladacycles (1 center dot 2CH(2)Cl(2)center dot H2O, 2, 5, and 7), and monoinserted palladacycles (17, 18, and 20 center dot C7H8 H2O) is smaller than that anticipated for mono- and diinserted palladacycles, and this feature is mainly ascribed to the proclivity of III-XI to undergo ring contraction cum amine-imine tautomerization upon alkyne insertion. Palladacycle 22 represents the first diinserted product obtained in alkyne insertion reactions of kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(Lewis base)X] type palladarycles. The molecular structure of 22 center dot H2O determined by X-ray diffraction indicates that the positive charge on the guanidinium moiety is balanced by the negative charge on the palladium atom and thus represents the first structurally characterized zwitterionic palladacycle to be reported in alkyne insertion chemistry. Plausible mechanisms of formation of 12-21 and 22 have been outlined. The presence of more than one species in solution for some of the palladacycles in the series 1-7 and 12-21 was explained by invoking the C-N single-bond rotation of the CN3 unit of the guanidine moiety, while this process in conjunction with Pd-N(lutidine) bond rotation was invoked to explain the presence of four isomers of 15, as studied with the aid of variable-concentration H-1 NMR experiments carried out for 14 and 15.

Identification and analysis of nonbonded interactions within a molecule and with the surrounding molecules are an essential part of structural studies, given the importance of these interactions in defining the structure and function of any supramolecular entity. MolBridge is an easy to use algorithm based purely on geometric criteria that can identify all possible nonbonded interactions, such as hydrogen bond, halogen bond, cation-pi, pi-pi and van der Waals, in small molecules as well as biomolecules. The user can either upload three-dimensional coordinate files or enter the molecular ID corresponding to the relevant database. The program is available in a standalone form and as an interactive web server with Jmol and JME incorporated into it. The program is freely downloadable and the web server version is also available at http://nucleix.mbu.iisc.ernet.in/molbridge/index.php.

This article highlights different synthetic strategies for the preparation of colloidal heterostructured nanocrystals, where at least one component of the constituent nanostructure is a semiconductor. Growth of shell material on a core nanocrystal acting as a seed for heterogeneous nucleation of the shell has been discussed. This seeded-growth technique, being one of the most heavily explored mechanisms, has already been discussed in many other excellent review articles. However, here our discussion has been focused differently based on composition (semiconductor@semiconductor, magnet@semiconductor, metal@semiconductor and vice versa), shape anisotropy of the shell growth, and synthetic methodology such as one-step vs. multi-step. The relatively less explored strategy of preparing heterostructures via colloidal sintering of different nanostructures, known as nanocrystal-fusion, has been reviewed here. The ion-exchange strategy, which has recently attracted huge research interest, where compositional tuning of nanocrystals can be achieved by exchanging either the cation or anion of a nanocrystal, has also been discussed. Specifically, controlled partial ion exchange has been critically reviewed as a viable synthetic strategy for the fabrication of heterostructures. Notably, we have also included the very recent methodology of utilizing inorganic ligands for the fabrication of heterostructured colloidal nanocrystals. This unique strategy of inorganic ligands has appeared as a new frontier for the synthesis of heterostructures and is reviewed in detail here for the first time. In all these cases, recent developments have been discussed with greater detail to add upon the existing reviews on this broad topic of semiconductor-based colloidal heterostructured nanocrystals.

Depalladation of the monoalkyne-inserted cyclopalldated guanidines (kappa 2(C,N)Pd(2,6-Me2C5H3N)Br] (I and II) in PhCl under reflux conditions and that of the dialkyne-inserted cyclopalladated guanidine kappa(2)(C,N):eta(2)(C=C)PdBr] (III) in pyridine under reflux conditions afforded a guanidine-containing indole (1), imidaziondole (2), and benzazepine (3) in 80%, 67%, and 76%, yields, respectively. trans-L2PdBr2] species (L = 2,6-Me2C5H3N, C5H5N) were also isolated in the aforementioned reactions in 35%, 42%, and 40% yields. Further , the reaction of the cyclopalladated guanidine kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(mu-Br)](2) (IV) with AgBF4 in a CH2Cl2/MeCN mixture afforded the cationic pincer type cyclopalladated guanidine kappa(3)(C,N,O)Pd(MeCN)]BF4] (4) in 85% yield and this palladacycle upon crystallization in MeCN and the reaction of kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(mu-Br)](2) (V) with AgBf(4) in a CH2Cl2/MeCN mixture afforded the cationic palladacycles {kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(MeCN)(2)]BF4](5 and 6) in 89% and 91% yields, respectively. The separate reactions of 4 with 2 equiv of methyl phenylpropiolate (MPP) or diphenylacetylene (DPA) and the reaction of 5 with 2 equiv of MPP in PhCl at 110 degrees C afforded the guanidine-containing quinazolinium tetrafluoroborate 7 in 25-32% yields. The reaction of 6 with 2 equiv of DPA under otherwise identical conditions afforded the unsymmetrically substituted guanidinium tetrafluoroborate 8, containing a highly substituted naphthalene unit, in 82% yield. Compounds 1-8 were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic techniques, and all compounds except 4 were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The Molecular structure of 2 and 3 are nove, as the framework in the former arises due to the formation of two C-N bonds upon depalladation while the butadienyl unit in the latter revealed cis,cis stereochemistry, a-feature unprecedented in alkyne insertion chemistry. Plausible pathways for the formation of heterocycles/carbocycles are proposed. the influence of substitutents on the aryl rings fo the cyclopalladated guanidine moiety and those on alkynes upon the nature of the products in addressed. Heterocycles 1 and 7 revealed the presence of two rotamers in about a 1.00:0.43 ratio in CDCl3 and in about a 1.00:0.14 ratio in CD3OD, respectively, as detected by H-1 NMR spectroscopy while in CD3CN and DMSO-d(6) (1) and CD3CN and CDCl3 (7), these heterocycles revealed the presence of a single rotamer. These spectral features are attributed to the restricted C-N single-bond rotation of the CN3 unit of the guanidine moiety, which possibly arises from steric constraint due to the formation of a N-H center dot center dot center dot Cl hydrogen bond with CDCl3 (1) and N-H center dot center dot center dot O and O-D center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds with CD3OD (7).

Several covalent strategies towards surface charge-reversal in nanochannels have been reported with the purpose of manipulating ion transport. However, covalent routes lack dynamism, modularity and post-synthetic flexibility, and hence restrict their applicability in different environments. Here, we introduce a facile non-covalent approach towards charge-reversal in nanochannels (< 10 nm) using strong charge-transfer interactions between dicationic viologen (acceptor) and trianionic pyranine (donor). The polarity of ion transport was switched from anion selective to ambipolar to cation selective by controlling the extent of viologen bound to the pyranine. We could also regulate the ion transport with respect to pH by selecting a donor with pH-responsive functional groups. The modularity of this approach further allows facile integration of various functional groups capable of responding to stimuli such as light and temperature to modulate the transport of ions as well as molecules.

Oxygen potentials established by the equilibrium between three condensed phases, CaOss+CoOss+ Ca3Co2O6 and CoOss+Ca3Co2O6+Ca3CO3.93+O-alpha(9.36-delta), are measured as a function of temperature using solid-state electrochemical cells incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte and pure oxygen as the reference electrode. Cation non-stoichiometry and oxygen non-stoichiometry in Ca3Co3.93+alpha O9.36-delta are determined using different techniques under defined conditions. Decomposition temperatures and thermodynamic properties of Ca3Co2O6 and Ca3Co4O9.163 are calculated from the results. The standard entropy and enthalpy of formation of Ca3Co2O6 at 298.15 K are evaluated. Using thermodynamic data from this study and auxiliary information from the literature, phase diagram for the ternary system Ca-Co-O is computed. Isothermal sections at representative temperatures are displayed to demonstrate the evolution of phase relations with temperature. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Pyrophosphate cathodes have been recently reported as a competent family of insertion compounds for sodium-ion batteries. In the current study, we have investigated the binary Na2 - x(Fe1 - yMny)P2O7 (0 <= y <= 1) pyrophosphate family, synthesized by the classical solid-state method. They form a continuous solid solution maintaining triclinic P-1 (#2) symmetry. The local structural coordination differs mainly by different degrees of Na site occupancy and preferential occupation of the Fe2 site by Mn. The structural and magnetic properties of these mixed-metal pyrophosphate phases have been studied. In each case, complete Fe3+/Fe2+ redox activity has been obtained centered at 3 V vs. Na. The Fe3+/Fe2+ redox process involves multiple steps between 2.5 and 3 V owing to Na-cation ordering during electrochemical cycling, which merge to form a broad single Fe3+/Fe2+ redox peak upon progressive Mn-doping. Systematic monitoring of subsurface hydrogeochemistry has been carried out for a period of one year in a humid tropical region along the Nethravati-Gurupur River. The major ion and stable isotope (delta O-18 and delta H-2) compositions are used to understand the hydrogeochemistry of groundwater and its interaction with surface water. In the study, it is observed that intense weathering of source rocks is the major source of chemical elements to the surface and subsurface waters. In addition, agricultural activities and atmospheric contributions also control the major ion chemistry of water in the study area. There is a clear seasonality in the groundwater chemistry, which is related to the recharge and discharge of the hydrological system. On a temporal scale, there is a decrease in major cation concentrations during the monsoon which is a result of dilution of sources from the weathering of rock minerals, and an increase in anion concentrations which is contributed by the atmosphere, accompanied by an increase in water level during the monsoon. The stable isotope composition indicates that groundwater in the basin is of meteoric origin and recharged directly from the local precipitation during the monsoonal season. Soon after the monsoon, groundwater and surface water mix in the subsurface region. The groundwater feeds the surface water during the lean river flow season.

A new one-pot version of the titled reaction involves heating a mixture of a carbonyl compound, a phenylhydrazine, and the cation exchange resin Amberlite IR 120 in refluxing ethanol. A variety of enolizable aldehydes, and ketones and several substituted phenylhydrazines could thus be converted to the corresponding indoles in excellent yields (70-88%). Reaction times were typically 6-10 h, with the resin being then filtered off and the product isolated after minimal workup.

Structural variations of different Z pi-aromatic three-membered ring systems of main group elements, especially group 14 and 13 elements as compared to the classical description of cyclopropenyl cation has been reviewed in this article. The structures of heavier analogues as well as group 13 analogues of cyclopropenyl cation showed an emergence of dramatic structural patterns which do not conform, to the general norms of carbon chemistry. Isolobal analogies between the main group fragments have been efficiently used to explain the peculiarities observed in these three-membered ring systems.

Diaminopropionate ammonialyase (DAPAL), a fold-typeII pyridoxal 5-phosphate-dependent enzyme, catalyzes the ,-elimination of diaminopropionate (DAP) to pyruvate and ammonia. DAPAL was able to utilize both d- and l-DAP as substrates with almost equal efficiency. Mutational analysis of functionally important residues such as Thr385, Asp125 and Asp194 was carried out to understand the mechanism by which the isomers are hydrolyzed. Further, the putative residues involved in the formation of disulfide bond Cys271 and Cys299 were also mutated. T385S, T385D sDAPAL were as active with dl-DAP as substrate as sDAPAL, whereas the later exhibited a threefold increase in catalytic efficiency with d-Ser as substrate. Further analysis of these mutants suggested that DAPAL might follow an anti-E-2 mechanism of catalysis that does not involve the formation of a quinonoid intermediate. Of the two mutants of Asp125, D125E showed complete loss of activity with d-DAP as substrate, whereas the reaction with l-DAP was not affected significantly, demonstrating that Asp125 was essential for abstraction of protons from the d-isomer. By contrast, mutational analysis of Asp194 showed that the residue may not be directly involved in proton abstraction from l-DAP. sDAPAL does not form a disulfide bond in solution, although the position of Cys299 and Cys271 in the modeled structure of sDAPAL favored the formation of a disulfide bond. Further, unlike eDAPAL, sDAPAL could be activated by monovalent cations. Mutation of the cysteine residues showed that Cys271 may be involved in coordinating the monovalent cation, as observed in the case of other fold-typeII enzymes.

In this article, we have presented ultrafast charge transfer dynamics through halogen bonds following vertical ionization of representative halogen bonded clusters. Subsequent hole directed reactivity of the radical cations of halogen bonded clusters is also discussed. Furthermore, we have examined effect of the halogen bond strength on the electron-electron correlation-and relaxation-driven charge migration in halogen bonded complexes. For this study, we have selected A-Cl (A represents F, OH, CN, NH2, CF3, and COOH substituents) molecules paired with NH3 (referred as ACl:NH3 complex): these complexes exhibit halogen bonds. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on purely electron correlation-and relaxation-driven ultrafast (attosecond) charge migration dynamics through halogen bonds. Both density functional theory and complete active space self-consistent field theory with 6-31+G(d, p) basis set are employed for this work. Upon vertical ionization of NCCl center dot center dot center dot NH3 complex, the hole is predicted to migrate from the NH3-end to the ClCN-end of the NCCl center dot center dot center dot NH3 complex in approximately 0.5 fs on the D-0 cationic surface. This hole migration leads to structural rearrangement of the halogen bonded complex, yielding hydrogen bonding interaction stronger than the halogen bonding interaction on the same cationic surface. Other halogen bonded complexes, such as H2NCl:NH3, F3CCl:NH3, and HOOCCl:NH3, exhibit similar charge migration following vertical ionization. On the contrary, FCl:NH3 and HOCl:NH3 complexes do not exhibit any charge migration following vertical ionization to the D-0 cation state, pointing to interesting halogen bond strength-dependent charge migration. The large protein L of negative-sense RNA viruses is a multifunctional protein involved in transcription and replication of genomic RNA. It also possesses enzymatic activities involved in capping and methylation of viral mRNAs. The pathway for mRNA capping followed by the L protein of the viruses in the Morbillivirus genus has not been established, although it has been speculated that these viruses may follow the unconventional capping pathway as has been shown for some viruses of Rhabdoviridae family. We had earlier shown that the large protein L of Rinderpest virus expressed as recombinant L-P complex in insect cells as well as the ribonucleoprotein complex from purified virus possesses RNA triphosphatase (RTPase) and guanylyltransferase activities, in addition to RNA dependent RNA polymerase activity. In the present work, we demonstrate that RTPase as well as nucleoside triphosphatase (NTPase) activities are exhibited by a subdomain of the L protein in the C terminal region (a.a. 1640 1840). The RTPase activity depends absolutely on a divalent cation, either magnesium or manganese. Both the RTPase and NTPase activities of the protein show dual metal specificity. Two mutant proteins having alanine mutations in the glutamic acid residues in motif-A of the RTPase domain did not show RTPase activity, while exhibiting reduced NTPase activity suggesting overlapping active sites for the two enzymatic functions. The RTPase and NTPase activities of the L subdomain resemble those of the Vaccinia capping enzyme D1 and the baculovirus LEF4 proteins. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

We report molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to explore the influence of a counterion on the structure and dynamics of cationic and anionic solvation shells for various ions in methanol at 298 K. We show that the variation in ionic size of either the cation or the anion in an ion pair influences the solvation structure of the other ion as well as the diffusivity in an electrolyte solution of methanol. The extent of ionic association between the cation and its counteranion of different ionic sizes has been investigated by analyzing the radial distribution functions (RDFs) and the orientation of methanol molecules in the first solvation shell (FSS) of ions. It is shown that the methanol in the FSS of the anion as well the cation exhibit quite different radial and orientational structures as compared to methanol which lie in the FSS of either the anion or the cation but not both. We find that the coordination number (CN) of F-, Cr-, and I- ions decreases with increasing size of the anion which is contrary to the trend reported for the anions in H2O. The mean residence time (MRT) of methanol molecules in the FSS of ions has been calculated using the stable states picture (SSP) approach. It is seen that the ion-counterion interaction has a considerable influence on the MRT of methanol molecules in the FSS of ions. We also discuss the stability order of the ion-counterion using the potentials of mean force (PMFs) for ion pairs with ions of different sizes. The PMF plots reveal that the Li+-F- pair (small-small) is highly stable and the Li+-I- pair is least stable (small-large) in electrolyte solutions.
