Founded in 1869, this facility was America's first "University Hospital." The 1,000-bed general hospital, with its 200-bed children's hospital (C.S. Mott Hospital), is the heart of a vast health complex which includes School of Medicine, Nursing and Public Health...plus research facilities. The Mary Markley dormitory building may be seen in the foreground.

Macroeconomic models based on the Phillips Curve predict that as the unemployment rate declines toward the long-run, natural rate, the pace of wage and price growth accelerates and inflation rises.1 In this paper I analyze the profitability prospects for the U.S. hotel industry in today’s relatively volatile economic environment, keeping in mind the Phillips Curve’s general principle that inflation and employment have an inverse, but relatively stable short-term relationship. Although employment and economic growth in the U.S. have been uneven in recent months, the unemployment rate has declined to less than 5 percent, which many economists believe is close to the natural rate. Growth in wages and salaries, as measured by the Employment Cost Index, has concurrently been moving upward between 2.5 and 3.0 percent during the past 12 months. At the same time, general inflation remains below levels that might typically be expected this late in the cycle, although core inflation is bumping up against the Federal Reserve’s 2-percent target. If the inflation rate continues to move upward as predicted by Phillips Curve models (and encouraged by the Federal Reserve), rising labor costs and other expenses will exert downward pressure on U.S. business profits. Backward movement up the Phillips Curve (with greater inflation) coincides with an expanding economy. In that scenario, prices of goods and services also will rise in real terms if their supply cannot keep up with demand, and producers have the ability to raise prices (absent fixed-price contracts such as leases).

Resultados: Verificou-se algum conhecimento por parte dos formandos de grande parte das receitas de remédios caseiros, embora por vezes com alguma desconfiança da sua eficácia, acreditamos terem ficado com intenção de usar a maior parte das receitas expostas pela sua facilidade de elaboração e pela valorização crescente da tradicionalidade e ancestralidade, julgamos desta forma poder ter contribuído para a promoção e manutenção da saúde; Abstract: As part of the European Project "My Food My Medicine” which has as its central idea the Board of Hippocrates that our food should be our medicine i.e., a healthy diet is the foundation of a healthy life, this report presents an educational project about the maintenance of health through the promotion of healthy eating that is reflected also by the use of natural medicines based on homemade/traditional recipes used ancestrally that respond to the most common health disorders. Objectives: Take the participants to understand the basic principles and the recipes of traditional medicine, the characteristics of the ingredients and their health benefits. Methodology: Development of an educational project and educational materials, tested trough out its implementation, and conducting questionnaires to trainers and trainees. Results: The objective was accomplished. It was found some familiarity on the part of the graduates of most recipes for home remedies although sometimes with some distrust of their validity. The schooling contributed to health promotion. The trainees demonstrated the intention to use the recipes exposed as a way to maintain a healthy life.

The objective of this research is to identify the benefits of ergonomic improvements in workstations and in planned parts supply in an automotive assembly line. Another aim is to verify to what extent it is possible to create competitive advantages in the manufacturing area with reduction in vehicle assembly time by using technological investments in ergonomics with benefits to the worker and to the company. The Methods Time Measurement (MTM) methodology is chosen to measure the process time differences. To ensure a reliable comparison, a company in Brazil that has two different types of assembly line installations in the same plant was observed, and both assembly lines were under the same influences in terms of human resources, wages, food, and educational level of the staff. In this article, the first assembly line is called ""new"" and was built 6 years ago, with high investments in ergonomic solutions, in the supply system, and in the process. The other is called ""traditional"" and was built 23 years ago with few investments in the area. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Forestry in general and logging in particular continue to be among the three most hazardous sectors in European countries. The aim of this article is to characterize health and safety problems and solutions in E.U. forestry operations, and particularly in Portuguese operations. Forest types, production, employment and ownership are used to characterize the forest sector. Forestry accidents and health problems data are mentioned. Typical hazards associated to the nature of logging operations are systematized. Preventive measures, focused on a wide spectrum of measures, making safety considerations an integral feature of all operational activities from planning to organization to execution and supervision of work are emphasized in this article.

This paper studies optimal monetary policy in a framework that explicitly accounts for policymakers' uncertainty about the channels of transmission of oil prices into the economy. More specfically, I examine the robust response to the real price of oil that US monetary authorities would have been recommended to implement in the period 1970 2009; had they used the approach proposed by Cogley and Sargent (2005b) to incorporate model uncertainty and learning into policy decisions. In this context, I investigate the extent to which regulator' changing beliefs over different models of the economy play a role in the policy selection process. The main conclusion of this work is that, in the specific environment under analysis, one of the underlying models dominates the optimal interest rate response to oil prices. This result persists even when alternative assumptions on the model's priors change the pattern of the relative posterior probabilities, and can thus be attributed to the presence of model uncertainty itself.
