When cement hydrated compositions are analyzed by usual initial mass basis TG curves to calculate mass losses, the higher is the amount of additive added or is the combined water content, the higher is the cement 'dilution' in the initial mass of the sample. In such cases, smaller mass changes in the different mass loss steps are obtained, due to the actual smaller content of cement in the initial mass compositions. To have a same mass basis of comparison, and to avoid erroneous results of initial components content there from, thermal analysis data and curves have to be transformed on cement calcined basis, i.e. on the basis of cement oxides mass present in the calcined samples or on the sample cement initial mass basis. The paper shows and discusses the fundamentals of these bases of calculation, with examples on free and combined water analysis, on calcium sulfate hydration during false cement set and on quantitative evaluation and comparison of pozzolanic materials activity.

In this paper the theoretical fundamentals related to the introduction of NNT (No Net Translation) and NNR (No Net-Rotation) conditions in the realization of a referential are presented. Moreover, aspects related to the implementation are also presented, with special emphasis on the realization from VLBI data, where only scale information is available.

This article presents an automatic methodology for extraction of road seeds from high-resolution aerial images. The method is based on a set of four road objects and another set of connection rules among road objects. Each road object is a local representation of an approximately straight road fragment and its construction is based on a combination of polygons describing all relevant image edges, according to some rules embodying road knowledge. Each one of the road seeds is composed by a sequence of connected road objects, in which each sequence of this type can be geometrically structured as a chain of contiguous quadrilaterals. Experiments carried out with high-resolution aerial images showed that the proposed methodology is very promising in extracting road seeds. This article presents the fundamentals of the method and the experimental results, as well.

The mathematical fundamentals involved in the realization of a high precision reference system, taking into account solutions from VLBI, SLR, GPS and DORIS are presented. Each individual solution has its own deficiencies in providing a global reference system. But combining all solutions together, and by the introduction of the no net rotation condition (NNR), a solution that reflects the nowadays precision of the available spatial techniques for the determination of position and velocity of stations located on the Earth crust is obtained. Whilst the origin is provided by SLR, the scale is introduced by SLR and VLBI. The orientation and its temporal evolution are introduced via internal constraints, in accordance with the NNR condition.

This article deals with the development of three competencies defined and studied in the context of Statistics Education (literacy, thinking and statistical reasoning). These competencies based on interpretation and understanding of critical information from real data are associated with an education geared toward the formation of critical citizenship and are in agreement with the principles that guide Critical Education. In this context, we consider Mathematical Modeling as a concrete possibility for integration between Critical Education and Education Statistics. We show that work with modeling projects in the classroom takes place in a context in which teaching is guided by the fundamentals of Critical Education. We present a project entitled Teaching Statistics and the financial market which illustrates the congruence between the objectives of Education Statistics and Critical Education.

The texture of concrete blocks is very important and is often the decisive factor when choosing a product, particularly if the building specifications does not dispense with the high resistance of the blocks, but has the purpose of reducing costs with finishing, therefore preferring exposed blocks with a closer texture. Furthermore, a closer texture, especially for exteriors, may be the vital factor of the building's pathology. However, there is so far no standard to quantify the texture of a structural block. This article proposes to apply the freely available UTHSCSA-Image ToolTM program developed by the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio to evaluate the texture of masonry blocks. One aspect that should never be overlooked when studying masonry blocks is compressive strength. Therefore, this work also gets the compressive strength of the blocks with and without the addition of lime. The addition of small quantities of lime proved beneficial for both texture and compressive strength. However, increasing the amount of lime proved to be feasible only to improve texture. © 2012 Taylor & Francis Group.

Mineral research works are fundamentals for recognition and incorporation of new reserves. This paper present an integrated analysis of geologic and metallogenetics data, with results gotten from the application of the Induced Polarization geophysical method, in an copper ore occurrence, inserted in Camaquã sedimentary basin, situated in northeast of Caçapava do Sul city (RS). In area ocurr arkosean arenites average coarse, the intensely silicified and recrystallized, pertaining to Passo da Promessa Formation. The presence of azurita and malachite in breakings and high porosity zones of the host rock characterizes the mineral occurrence in surface, located in the crossing two fault families. The inversion models indicate the predominance of high chargeability in vulcanics tuff, rock of high porosity in relation to the andesites and metaconglomerates gifts in the area. The strong structural control of the mineral occurrence associated the high chargeability in volcanic tuff is indications of the hydrothermal fluid access by means of faults, until rocks with great porosity, where it occurred disseminations of copper sulfides in depth and carbonates in surface.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) has established to be a remarkably versatile biomaterial and can be used in wide variety of applied scientific endeavours, especially for medical devices. In fact, biomedical devices recently have gained a significant amount of attention because of an increased interest in tissue-engineered products for both wound care and the regeneration of damaged or diseased organs. Due to its unique nanostructure and properties, microbial cellulose is a natural candidate for numerous medical and tissue-engineered applications. Hydrophilic bacterial cellulose fibers of an average diameter of 50 nm are produced by the bacterium Acetobacter xylinum, using a fermentation process. The microbial cellulose fiber has a high degree of crystallinity. Using direct nanomechanical measurement, determined that these fibers are very strong and when used in combination with other biocompatible materials, produce nanocomposites particularly suitable for use in human and veterinary medicine. Moreover, the nanostructure and morphological similarities with collagen make BC attractive for cell immobilization and cell support. The architecture of BC materials can be engineered over length scales ranging from nano to macro by controlling the biofabrication process. The chapter describes the fundamentals, purification and morphological investigation of bacterial cellulose. This chapter deals with the modification of microbial cellulose and how to increase the compatibility between cellulosic surfaces and a variety of plastic materials. Furthermore, provides deep knowledge of fascinating current and future applications of bacterial cellulose and their nanocomposites especially in the medical field, materials with properties closely mimic that of biological organs and tissues were described. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.
