Semicarbazones and their transition metal complexes have been receiving considerable attention because of their biological relevance and applications in the field of analysis and in the field of organic NLO materials. Their structural diversity also attracted inorganic chemists. A good deal of work has been reported on the synthesis and structural investigation of semicarbazones and their complexes. This is due partially to their capability of acting as multidentate, NO, NNO, ONO and ONNO donors with the formation of either mono or bi or polynuclear complexes. Their chemistry and pharmacological applications have been extensively investigated. Appreciable biological applications as well as diverse stereochemistry of their metal complexes prompted us to synthesize two new tridentate ONO donor N4-phenyl semicarbazones derived from 2-hydroxy-4-methoxyacetophenone and 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone and their transition metal complexes. These ketones were selected since they can provide a further binding site from phenolic–OH and can thus increase the denticity. Introduction of heterocyclic bases like 1,10-phenanthroline, 2,2′-bipyridine, 4,4′-dimethyl- 2,2′-bipyridine and 4-picoline and some pseudohalides like azide and thiocyanate ion can result in mixed ligand metal chelates with different geometries in coordination compounds In the present study, oxovanadium(IV), manganese(II), cobalt (II/III), nickel(II), copper(II) and zinc(II) complexes of 2-hydroxy-4- methoxyacetophenone-N4-phenylsemicarbazone (H2ASC) and 2-hydroxy-4- methoxybenzophenone-N4-phenylsemicarbazone (H2BSC) were synthesized and characterized.

High-speed semiconductor lasers are an integral part in the implemen- tation of high-bit-rate optical communications systems. They are com- pact, rugged, reliable, long-lived, and relatively inexpensive sources of coherent light. Due to the very low attenuation window that exists in the silica based optical fiber at 1.55 μm and the zero dispersion point at 1.3 μm, they have become the mainstay of optical fiber com- munication systems. For the fabrication of lasers with gratings such as, distributed bragg reflector or distributed feedback lasers, etching is the most critical step. Etching defines the lateral dimmensions of the structure which determines the performance of optoelectronic devices. In this thesis studies and experiments were carried out about the exist- ing etching processes for InP and a novel dry etching process was de- veloped. The newly developed process was based on Cl2/CH4/H2/Ar chemistry and resulted in very smooth surfaces and vertical side walls. With this process the grating definition was significantly improved as compared to other technological developments in the respective field. A surface defined grating definition approach is used in this thesis work which does not require any re-growth steps and makes the whole fabrication process simpler and cost effective. Moreover, this grating fabrication process is fully compatible with nano-imprint lithography and can be used for high throughput low-cost manufacturing. With usual etching techniques reported before it is not possible to etch very deep because of aspect ratio dependent etching phenomenon where with increasing etch depth the etch rate slows down resulting in non-vertical side walls and footing effects. Although with our de- veloped process quite vertical side walls were achieved but footing was still a problem. To overcome the challenges related to grating defini- tion and deep etching, a completely new three step gas chopping dry etching process was developed. This was the very first time that a time multiplexed etching process for an InP based material system was demonstrated. The developed gas chopping process showed extra ordinary results including high mask selectivity of 15, moderate etch- ing rate, very vertical side walls and a record high aspect ratio of 41. Both the developed etching processes are completely compatible with nano imprint lithography and can be used for low-cost high-throughput fabrication. A large number of broad area laser, ridge waveguide laser, distributed feedback laser, distributed bragg reflector laser and coupled cavity in- jection grating lasers were fabricated using the developed one step etch- ing process. Very extensive characterization was done to optimize all the important design and fabrication parameters. The devices devel- oped have shown excellent performance with a very high side mode suppression ratio of more than 52 dB, an output power of 17 mW per facet, high efficiency of 0.15 W/A, stable operation over temperature and injected currents and a threshold current as low as 30 mA for almost 1 mm long device. A record high modulation bandwidth of 15 GHz with electron-photon resonance and open eye diagrams for 10 Gbps data transmission were also shown.

Oxidised low density lipoprotein (LDL) may be involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. We have therefore investigated the mechanisms underlying the antioxidant/pro-oxidant behavior of dehydroascorbate, the oxidation product of ascorbic acid, toward LDL incubated With Cu2+ ions. By monitoring lipid peroxidation through the formation of conjugated dienes and lipid hydroperoxides, we show that the pro-oxidant activity of dehydroascorbate is critically dependent on the presence of lipid hydroperoxides, which accumulate during the early stages of oxidation. Using electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, we show that dehydroascorbate amplifies the generation of alkoxyl radicals during the interaction of copper ions with the model alkyl hydroperoxide, tert-butylhydroperoxide. Under continuous-flow conditions, a prominent doublet signal was detected, which we attribute to both the erythroascorbate and ascorbate free radicals. On this basis, we propose that the pro-oxidant activity of dehydroascorbate toward LDL is due to its known spontaneous interconversion to erythroascorbate and ascorbate, which reduce Cu2+ to Cu+ and thereby promote the decomposition of lipid hydroperoxides. Various mechanisms, including copper chelation and Cu+ oxidation, are suggested to underlie the antioxidant behavior of dehydroascorbate in LDL that is essentially free of lipid hydroperoxides. The lithium salt of the anionic SPS pincer ligand composed of a central hypervalent lambda(4)-phosphinine ring bearing two ortho-positioned diphenylphosphine sulfide side arms reacts with [Mn(CO)(5)Br] to give fac-[Mn(SPS)(CO)(3)], This isomer can be converted photochemicaily to mer-[Mn(SPS)(CO)(3)], with a very high quantum yield (0.80 +/- 0.05). The thermal backreaction is slow (taking ca. 8 h at room temperature), in contrast to rapid electrodecatalyzed mer-to-fac isomerization triggered by electrochemical reduction of mer-[Mn(SPS)(CO)(3)]. Both geometric isomers of [Mn(SPS)(CO)(3)] have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. Both isomers show luminescence from a low-lying (IL)-I-3 (SPS-based) excited state. The light emission of fac-[Mn(SPS)(CO)(3)] is largely quenched by the efficient photoisomerization occurring probably from a low-lying Mn-CO dissociative excited state. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations describe the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of fac- and mer-[Mn(CO)(3)(SPS)] as ligand-centered orbitals, largely localized on the phosphinine ring of the SPS pincer ligand. In line with the ligand nature of its frontier orbitals, fac-[Mn(SPS)(CO)(3)] is electrochemically reversibly oxidized and reduced to the corresponding radical cation and anion, respectively. The spectroscopic (electron paramagnetic resonance, IR, and UV-vis) characterization of the radical species provides other evidence for the localization of the redox steps on the SIPS ligand. The smaller HOMO-LUMO energy difference in the case of mer-[Mn(CO)(3)(SPS)], reflected in the electronic absorption and emission spectra, corresponds with its lower oxidation potential compared to that of the fac isomer. The thermodynamic instability of mer-[Mn(CO)(3)(SPS)], confirmed by the DFT calculations, increases upon one-electron reduction and oxidation of the complex.

The burning of tobacco creates various types of free radicals that have been reported to be biologically active. Some radicals are transient but can initiate catalytic cycles that generate other free radicals. Other radicals are environmentally persistent and can exist in total particulate matter (TPM) for extended periods. In spite of their importance, little is known concerning the precursors of these radicals or under what pyrolysis/combustion conditions they are formed. We performed studies of the formation of radicals from the gas-phase pyrolysis and oxidative pyrolysis of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CT) between 750 and 1000 °C and phenol from 500 to 1000 °C. The initial electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra were complex, indicating the presence of multiple radicals. Using matrix annealing and microwave power saturation techniques, phenoxyl, cyclopentadienyl, and peroxyl radicals were identifiable, but only cyclopentadienyl radicals were stable above 750 °C.

Three double phenoxido-bridged dinuclear nickel(II) complexes, namely [Ni-2(L-1)(2)(NCS)(2)] (1), [Ni-2(L-2)(2)(NCS)(2)] (2), and [Ni-2(L-3)(2)(NCS)(2)] (3) have been synthesized using the reduced tridentate Schiff-base ligands 2-[1-(3-methylamino-propylamino)-ethyl]-phenol (HL1), 2-[1-(2-dimethylamino-ethylamino)-ethyl]-phenol (HL2), and 2-[1-(3-dimethylarnino-propylamino)-ethyl]-phenol (HL3), respectively. The coordination compounds have been characterized by X-ray structural analyses, magnetic-susceptibility measurements, and various spectroscopic methods. In all complexes, the nickel(II) ions are penta-coordinated in a square-pyramidal environment, which is severely distorted in the case of 1 (Addison parameter tau = 0.47) and 3 (tau = 0.29), while it is almost perfect for 2 (tau = 0.03). This arrangement leads to relatively strong antiferromagnetic interactions between the Ni(II) (S = 1) metal centers as mediated by double phenoxido bridges (with J values of -23.32 (1), -35.45 (2), and -34.02 (3) cm(3) K mol(-1), in the convention H = -2JS(1)S(2)). The catalytic activity of these Ni compounds has been investigated for the aerial oxidation of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol. Kinetic data analysis following Michaelis-Menten treatment reveals that the catecholase activity of the complexes is influenced by the flexibility of the ligand and also by the geometry around the metal ion. Electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy (ESI-MS) studies (in the positive mode) have been performed for all the coordination compounds in the presence of 3,5-DTBC to characterize potential complex-substrate intermediates. The mass-spectrometry data, corroborated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements, suggest that the metal centers are involved in the catecholase activity exhibited by the complexes.

We discuss the modeling of dielectric responses of electromagnetically excited networks which are composed of a mixture of capacitors and resistors. Such networks can be employed as lumped-parameter circuits to model the response of composite materials containing conductive and insulating grains. The dynamics of the excited network systems are studied using a state space model derived from a randomized incidence matrix. Time and frequency domain responses from synthetic data sets generated from state space models are analyzed for the purpose of estimating the fraction of capacitors in the network. Good results were obtained by using either the time-domain response to a pulse excitation or impedance data at selected frequencies. A chemometric framework based on a Successive Projections Algorithm (SPA) enables the construction of multiple linear regression (MLR) models which can efficiently determine the ratio of conductive to insulating components in composite material samples. The proposed method avoids restrictions commonly associated with Archie’s law, the application of percolation theory or Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts models and is applicable to experimental results generated by either time domain transient spectrometers or continuous-wave instruments. Furthermore, it is quite generic and applicable to tomography, acoustics as well as other spectroscopies such as nuclear magnetic resonance, electron paramagnetic resonance and, therefore, should be of general interest across the dielectrics community.

In recent years, reactive oxygen species (ROS) derived from the vascular isoforms of NADPH oxidase, Nox1, Nox2, and Nox4, have been implicated in many cardiovascular pathologies. As a result, the selective inhibition of these isoforms is an area of intense current investigation. In this study, we postulated that Nox2ds, a peptidic inhibitor that mimics a sequence in the cytosolic B-loop of Nox2, would inhibit ROS production by the Nox2-. but not the Noxl- and Nox4-oxidase systems. To test our hypothesis, the inhibitory activity of Nox2ds was assessed in cell-free assays using reconstituted systems expressing the Nox2-, canonical or hybrid Nox1- or Nox4-oxidase. Our findings demonstrate that Nox2ds, but not its scrambled control, potently inhibited superoxide (O(2)(center dot-)) production in the Nox2 cell-free system, as assessed by the cytochrome c assay. Electron paramagnetic resonance confirmed that Nox2ds inhibits O(2)(center dot-) production by Nox2 oxidase. In contrast, Nox2ds did not inhibit ROS production by either Nox1- or Nox4-oxidase. These findings demonstrate that Nox2ds is a selective inhibitor of Nox2-oxidase and support its utility to elucidate the role of Nox2 in organ pathophysiology and its potential as a therapeutic agent. The signalling pathway CD40/CD40L (CD40 ligand) plays an important role in atherosclerotic plaque formation and rupture. AngII (angiotensin II), which induces oxidative stress and inflammation, is also implicated in the progression of atherosclerosis. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that AngII increases CD40/CD40L activity in vascular cells and that ROS (reactive oxygen species) are part of the signalling cascade that controls CD40/CD40L expression. Human CASMCs (coronary artery smooth muscle cells) in culture exposed to IL (interleukin)-1 beta or TNF-alpha (tumour necrosis factor-a) had increased superoxide generation and enhanced CD40 expression, detected by EPR (electron paramagnetic resonance) and immunoblotting respectively. Both phenomena were abolished by previous incubation with membrane-permeant antioxidants or cell transfection with P22(phox) antisense. AngII (50-200 nmol/l) induced an early and sustained increase in CD40 mRNA and protein expression in CASMCs, which was blocked by treatment with antioxidants. Increased CD40 expression led to enhanced activity of the pathway, as AngII-treated cells stimulated with recombinant CD40L released higher amounts of IL-8 and had increased COX-2 (cyclo-oxygenase-2) expression. We conclude that AngII stimulation of vascular cells leads to a ROS-dependent increase in CD40/CD40L signalling pathway activity. This phenomenon may be an important mechanism modulating the arterial injury observed in atherosclerosis-related vasculopathy.

Intrinsic paramagnetic responses were observed in the 60TeO(2)-25ZnO-15Na(2)O and 85TeO(2)-15Na(2)O mol% glasses, after gamma-irradiation at room temperature: (1) a shoulder at g(1) = g(parallel to) = 2.02 +/- 0.01 and an estimated g(perpendicular to)similar to 2.0 attributed to tellurium-oxygen hole center (TeOHC); (2) a narrow resonance at g(2)= 1.9960 +/- 0.0005 related to the modifiers and (3) a resolved resonance at g(3) = 1.9700 +/- 0.0005 ascribed to a tellurium electron center (TeEC) of an electron trapped at an oxygen vacancy (V(o)(+)) in a tellurium oxide structural center. It is suggested that the creation of (NBO(-),V(o)(+)) pair follows a mechanism where the modifier oxide molecule actuates as a catalyser. An additional model for the NBO radiolysis produced by the gamma-irradiation is proposed on the basis of the evolution of the g(1), g(2) and g(3) intensities with increasing dose (kGy). The growth and magnetic properties of Tin Selenide (SnSe) doped with Eu(2+) Sn(1-x)Eu(x)Se (x=2.5%) were investigated. Q-band (34 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance measurements show that the site symmetry of Eu(2+) at 4.2 K is orthorhombic and the Lande factor was determined to be g=1.99 +/- 0.01. The exchange coupling between nearest-neighbor (NN) Eu(2+) ions was estimated from magnetization and magnetic-susceptibility measurements using a model that takes into account the magnetic contributions of single ions, pairs and triplets. The exchange interaction between Eu(2+) nearest neighbors was found to be antiferromagnetic with an estimated average value of J(p)/k(B) =-0.18 +/- 0.03 K. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Natural silicate mineral of zoisite, Ca(2)Al(3)(SiO(4))(Si(2)O(7))O(OH), has been investigated concerning gamma-radiation, UV-radiation and high temperature annealing effects on thermoluminescence (TL). X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement confirmed zoisite structure and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis revealed besides Si, Al and Ca that are the main crystal components, other oxides of Fe, Mg, Cr, Na, K, Sr, Ti, Ba and Mn which are present in more than 0.05 wt%. The TL glow curve of natural sample contains (130-150), (340-370) and (435-475)degrees C peaks. Their shapes indicated a possibility that they are result of composition of two or more peaks strongly superposed, a fact confirmed by deconvolution method. Once pre-annealed at 600 degrees C for 1 h, the shape of the glow curves change and the zoisite acquires high sensitivity. Several peaks between 100 and 400 degrees C appear superposed, and the high temperature peak around 435 degrees C cannot be seen. The ultraviolet radiation, on the other hand, produces one TL peak around 130 degrees C and the second one around 200 degrees C and no more. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

110 degrees C thermoluminescence (TL) peak in quartz is well known due to its pre-dose effect, which is used in dating technique. The generally accepted mechanism for the production of this peak is based on Ge impurity contained in quartz. Its role is to substitute for Si in SiO(4) tetrahedron and under irradiation gives rise to [GeO(4)/e(-)](-) electron centre. Heating for TL read out liberates electron that recombines with hole in [AlO(4)/h]degrees or [H(3)O(4)/h]degrees centres emitting photon. The investigation, carried out on blue quartz, green quartz, black quartz, pink quartz, red quartz, sulphurous quartz, milky quartz, alpha quartz and synthetic quartz, has shown that the 110 degrees C TL peak in all these varieties of quartz has no correlation with the respective Ge content. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements on any of these varieties of quartz revealed a signal with g(1) = 2.0004, g(2) = 1.9986 and g(3) = 1.974 and this signal does not appear to correspond to any known EPR signals in alpha quartz. Furthermore, isothermal decay measurements are carried out on the above mentioned EPR signal and 110 degrees C TL peak in alpha, blue and green quartz. A close correlation has been observed in the decay behavior. A new mechanism is proposed based on an interstitial O(-) centre. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Diopside, a natural silicate mineral of formula CaMgSi2O6, has been investigated concerning its thermoluminescence (TL) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) properties. Glow curves and TL vs. gamma-dose were obtained irradiating natural samples to additional dose varying from 50 to 10,000Gy. Except for a 410 degrees C peak found in the Al-doped artificial diopside, all the other peaks grow linearly with radiation dose, but saturate beyond -1 kGy. To investigate high-temperature effect before irradiation, measurements of TL intensity in samples annealed at 500-900 degrees C and then irradiated to I kGy gamma-dose were carried out. Also the TL emission spectrum has been obtained. To compare with natural diopside, a synthetic pure polycrystal was produced and further those doped with iron, aluminum and manganese were also produced. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
