The purpose of this paper is to analyze innovations and the innovation system and its dynamics in the ethanol sector in the State of Sao Paulo. More specifically, this paper focuses on the development process in the sector, the public policies taken to promote the sector, and the organizations and key players involved in these policies and their responses to unforeseeable changes in economic, social and technological environments. To this end, this paper takes an historical perspective and reviews data on the cultivation of sugar cane, the production of ethanol, and on sugar cane yields as indicators of the innovations achieved in the sector. The geographical distribution of these indicators is also examined. Next, several cases in Piracicaba and Campinas in the State of Sao Paulo are presented; these give us a more concrete idea of the processes involved in innovation and technology transfer. Based on these observations, the ethanol cluster and the innovation system of the State of Sao Paulo are discussed from the viewpoint of the flowchart approach to industrial cluster policy.

Green innovation, which enables us to extract energy from food crops, caused a food shortage in 2008. Countries suffering severe damage started to reconsider their agricultural policy with the aim of becoming more autonomous. The food price hike of the time looks like a reversal of the celebrated Singer-Prebisch thesis proposed in the 1950s. This paper examines the consequences of this trend on the comparative advantages and development strategies of developing countries. For that purpose, first, trends and short-run fluctuations in the prices of fuel and bio-energy crops are investigated. It is shown that the price series of fuels and the crops are synchronized only after the fuel extracting technology came into effect. Second, the reversal of the Singer-Prebisch thesis is underpinned by the generic form of an endogenous growth model developed by Rebelo (1991). It is shown that as an economy grows, appreciation of the non-reproducible, such as mineral resources and raw labor, over the reproducible, such as capital goods, is the norm rather than an anomaly. Third, the consequences of the food price hike and underlying capital accumulation on the development strategies of labor-abundant and low-income countries are explored. It is concluded that the impact of the food price hikes on the alteration of a development strategy is only incremental, without reinforcement from raw-labor-saving innovation. A case study of inventions by JUKI Corporation, a world-leader in the sewing machine market exemplifies the fact that, of all the major inventions the company have made, raw-labor-saving inventions have not dominated, although JUKI's machines are sold to one of the most raw-labor-intensive industries.

Crude oil and natural gas have been essential energy sources and play a crucial role in the world economy. Changes in energy prices significantly impact economic growth. This study builds an econometric model to illustrate the substitute relation between crude oil and natural gas markets. Additionally, the determination of the oil and natural gas prices are endogenized, assuming imperfect competition to reflect a real market strategy. Our empirical results show that the overall performance of this system is acceptable, and the model can be applied to policy analysis for determining monetary or energy policy by introducing this model to the more comprehensive system.

Agriculture is a major consumer of energy in many countries of the world. Only a few of these countries are self-sufficient in conventional energy sources, which are also exhaustible. Fortunately, there are other sources of energy, such as wind, which has experienced recent developments in the area of wind power generation. From irrigation projects to power supply in remote farms, wind power generation can play a vital role. A simple methodology for technical evaluation of windmills for irrigation water pumping has been developed in this study to determine the feasibility per unit amount of water supplied and the levels of daily irrigation demand satisfied by windmill irrigation system at various levels of risk (probability of failure). For this purpose, a series of three hourly wind-speed data over a period of 38 years at Ciego de Ávila, Cuba, were analyzed to compute the diurnal wind pump discharge at varying levels of risk. The sizes of reservoirs required to modulate fluctuating discharge and to satisfy the levels of irrigation demand, on function of crop development dates, cultivated area and water elevation height, were computed by cumulative deficit water budgeting. An example is given illustrating the use of the methodology on tomato crop Licopersicon esculentum Mill) under greenhouse.

Crop irrigation is a major consumer of energy. Only a few countries are self-sufficient in conventional non-renewable energy sources. Fortunately, there are renewable ones, such as wind, which has experienced recent developments in the area of power generation. Wind pumps can play a vital role in irrigation projects in remote farms. A methodology based on daily estimation balance between water needs and water availability was used to evaluate the feasibility of the most economic windmill irrigation system. For this purpose, several factors were included: three-hourly wind velocity (W3 h, m/s), flow supplied by the wind pump as a function of the elevation height (H, m) and daily greenhouse evapotranspiration as a function of crop planting date. Monthly volumes of water required for irrigation (Dr, m3/ha) and in the water tank (Vd, m3), as well as the monthly irrigable area (Ar, ha), were estimated by cumulative deficit water budgeting taking in account these factors. An example is given illustrating the use of this methodology on tomato crop (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) under greenhouse at Ciego de Ávila, Cuba. In this case two different W3 h series (average and low wind year), three different H values and five tomato crop planting dates were considered. The results show that the optimum period of wind-pump driven irrigation is with crop plating in November, recommending a 5 m3 volume tank for cultivated areas around 0.2 ha when using wind pumps operating at 15 m of height elevation.

Massive integration of renewable energy sources in electrical power systems of remote islands is a subject of current interest. The increasing cost of fossil fuels, transport costs to isolated sites and environmental concerns constitute a serious drawback to the use of conventional fossil fuel plants. In a weak electrical grid, as it is typical on an island, if a large amount of conventional generation is substituted by renewable energy sources, power system safety and stability can be compromised, in the case of large grid disturbances. In this work, a model for transient stability analysis of an isolated electrical grid exclusively fed from a combination of renewable energy sources has been studied. This new generation model will be installed in El Hierro Island, in Spain. Additionally, an operation strategy to coordinate the generation units (wind, hydro) is also established. Attention is given to the assessment of inertial energy and reactive current to guarantee power system stability against large disturbances. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is shown by means of simulation results.

ABSTRACT Currently there is a strong interest to expand alternative energy sources for aviation and thereby achieve a reduction in carbon footprint and the strong energy dependence on fossil fuels in different countries. It is therefore being carried out many researches based on the conversion of vegetable feedstock in a new energy source. However, a successful replacement of petroleum fuels with biofuels, requires compliance with strict requirements and suitable properties. This project studies the materials compatibility with blends of coconut (CBK20), babassu (BBK20) and palm kernel (PBK20) biokerosene with commercial aviation jet fuel Jet A-1 (K-2). Polymeric and elastomeric materials, metals and aviation composites has been studied as part of the aircraft fuel system. The objective of this study is to demonstrate that both, the tested materials and the fuels investigated, are compatible when they are in contact at a certain temperature. For this reason, materials and kerosene properties have been compared using the standard test methods

Abstract Currently Cuban agriculture, as a strategic sector in the economy of the country, incorporates in its development and renewable energy management as a basic criterion for its future viability. However, there are a number of problems that limit the development of these energy sources in Cuba, among which are the incomplete knowledge of their potential use. For this reason, this research aims at maximizing the irrigated area of a given culture and determination of minimum control volume, using a type Windpump in given environmental conditions. We develop a methodology to predict the maximum potential of windmills for irrigation system, based on the daily balance calculation between the crop water needs and water availability. Through an example that illustrates the use of this methodology in the cultivation of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. var. FL - 5) under greenhouse in Ciego de Avila, Cuba, is a description of the elements of the proposed facility to supply water from the windmill. We studied several factors such as the number of trihoraria wind speed ( h V3 , m s- 1) for an average wind year and an average year with little wind, the flow supplied by the windmill depending on the lift height ( H , m) and daily crop evapotranspiration in greenhouse based on planting date. From the above factors were determined monthly water volumes needed for irrigation ( r D , m3 ha-1), the storage tank capacity ( dep. V , m3) and peak areas irrigated ( r A , ha) for each variant. The results show that the optimal period wind pumping for irrigation of greenhouse tomato crop under the environmental conditions studied is from November to February, and that the factors that influence the surface that can be irrigated with wind pumping are planting date and amount of deposit.

ABSTRACT. As time passes society evolves, cities grow, modernize, improve their infrastructure and offer more and better services to their citizens. This has made for many years cities have developed without thinking about what will come later , polluting the environment and high energy consuming and inefficient . Given this situation, and thanks to the Technological innovations in communications, is being taken to direct the evolution of cities towards a smart city model sustainable. Communication networks are one of the pillars on which society rests, which is always in contact with their environment. Increasingly, there is a greater need to know what happens in the real-time environment requesting weather information in a certain location , allowing know the traffic to choose the route to work , namely the time take the bus to get to the bus stop, etc. . As these, you could cite many more Examples of needs and services that society demands today and, surely, no one thought that was going to need a few years ago. Many of these real-time services are achieved through networks wireless sensors. Is to deploy a series of sensors in a tiny given area in order to collect information from the environment, process and shape it to make it available to users. Observing the trend followed by the Information Technology and Communications (ICT ) can finding an evolving toward embeded devices of increasingly small size and lower power consumption and at the same time, higher capacity process and memory ease communications. Following this line, is under construction with capacity smart city to think and make decisions, but you have to give it some degree of efficiency. It seeks to harness the resources of nature to create clean energy sources and unlimited. Using appropriate technologies to transform, for example, energy from the sun or wind energy into electricity, it can achieve the model city intended.

Renewable energy sources are believed to reduce drastically greenhouse gas emissions that would otherwise be generated from fossil fuels used to generate electricity. This implies that a unit of renewable energy will replace a unit of fossil-fuel, with its CO2 emissions, on an equivalent basis (with no other effects on the grid). But, the fuel economy and emissions in the existing power systems are not proportional with the electricity production of intermittent sources due to cycling of the fossil fuel plants that make up the balance of the grid (i.e. changing the power output makes thermal units to operate less efficiently). This study focuses in the interactions between wind generation and thermal plants cycling, by establishing the levels of extra fuel use caused by decreased efficiencies of fossil back-up for wind electricity in Spain. We analyze the production of all thermal plants in 2011, studying different scenarios where wind penetration causes major deviations in programming, while we define a procedure for quantifying the carbon reductions by using emission factors and efficiency curves from the existing installations. The objectives are to discuss the real contributions of renewable energies to the environmental targets as well as suggest alternatives that would improve the reliability of future power systems.

Helium Brayton cycles have been studied as power cycles for both fission and fusion reactors obtaining high thermal efficiency. This paper studies several technological schemes of helium Brayton cycles applied for the HiPER reactor proposal. Since HiPER integrates technologies available at short term, its working conditions results in a very low maximum temperature of the energy sources, something that limits the thermal performance of the cycle. The aim of this work is to analyze the potential of the helium Brayton cycles as power cycles for HiPER. Several helium Brayton cycle configurations have been investigated with the purpose of raising the cycle thermal efficiency under the working conditions of HiPER. The effects of inter-cooling and reheating have specifically been studied. Sensitivity analyses of the key cycle parameters and component performances on the maximum thermal efficiency have also been carried out. The addition of several inter-cooling stages in a helium Brayton cycle has allowed obtaining a maximum thermal efficiency of over 36%, and the inclusion of a reheating process may also yield an added increase of nearly 1 percentage point to reach 37%. These results confirm that helium Brayton cycles are to be considered among the power cycle candidates for HiPER.

Electrodynamic tether thrusters can use the power provided by solar panels to drive a current in the tether and then the Lorentz force to push against the Earth's magnetic field, thereby achieving propulsion without the expenditure of onboard energy sources or propellant. Practical tether propulsion depends critically on being able to extract multiamp electron currents from the ionosphere with relatively short tethers (10 km or less) and reasonably low power. We describe a new anodic design that uses an uninsulated portion of the metallic tether itself to collect electrons. Because of the efficient collection of this type of anode, electrodynamic thrusters for reboost of the International Space Station and for an upper stage capable of orbit raising, lowering, and inclination changes appear to be feasible. Specifically, a 10-km-long bare tether, utilizing 10 kW of the space station power could save most of the propellant required for the station reboost over its 10-year lifetime. The propulsive small expendable deployer system experiment is planned to test the bare-tether design in space in the year 2000 by deploying a 5-km bare aluminum tether from a Delta II upper stage to achieve up to 0.5-N drag thrust, thus deorbiting the stage.

At present, photovoltaic energy is one of the most important renewable energy sources. The demand for solar panels has been continuously growing, both in the industrial electric sector and in the private sector. In both cases the analysis of the solar panel efficiency is extremely important in order to maximize the energy production. In order to have a more efficient photovoltaic system, the most accurate understanding of this system is required. However, in most of the cases the only information available in this matter is reduced, the experimental testing of the photovoltaic device being out of consideration, normally for budget reasons. Several methods, normally based on an equivalent circuit model, have been developed to extract the I-V curve of a photovoltaic device from the small amount of data provided by the manufacturer. The aim of this paper is to present a fast, easy, and accurate analytical method, developed to calculate the equivalent circuit parameters of a solar panel from the only data that manufacturers usually provide. The calculated circuit accurately reproduces the solar panel behavior, that is, the I-V curve. This fact being extremely important for practical reasons such as selecting the best solar panel in the market for a particular purpose, or maximize the energy extraction with MPPT (Maximum Peak Power Tracking) methods.
