Background/Aims: hDAB2IP is a candidate tumor suppressor gene. We studied the expression of its two variants, hDAB2IPA and hDAB2IPB, in normal tissues, and the expression and methylation status of hDAB2IPA in hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) and cell lines.

We present early-time optical and near-infrared photometry of supernova (SN) 2005cf. The observations, spanning a period from about 12 d before to 3 months after maximum, have been obtained through the coordination of observational efforts of various nodes of the European Supernova Collaboration and including data obtained at the 2-m Himalayan Chandra Telescope. From the observed light curve we deduce that SN 2005cf is a fairly typical SN Ia with a post-maximum decline [Delta m(15)(B)(true) = 1.12] close to the average value and a normal luminosity of M-B,M-max = -19.39 +/- 0.33. Models of the bolometric light curve suggest a synthesized Ni-56 mass of about 0.7 M-circle dot. The negligible host galaxy interstellar extinction and its proximity make SN 2005cf a good Type Ia SN template.

A new type of advanced encryption standard (AES) implementation using a normal basis is presented. The method is based on a lookup technique that makes use of inversion and shift registers, which leads to a smaller size of lookup for the S-box than its corresponding implementations. The reduction in the lookup size is based on grouping sets of inverses into conjugate sets which in turn leads to a reduction in the number of lookup values. The above technique is implemented in a regular AES architecture using register files, which requires less interconnect and area and is suitable for security applications. The results of the implementation are competitive in throughput and area compared with the corresponding solutions in a polynomial basis.

Physiological secretion of bile acids has previously been linked to the regulation of blood glucose. GLP-1 is an intestinal peptide hormone with important glucose-lowering actions, such as stimulation of insulin secretion and inhibition of glucagon secretion. In this investigation, we assessed the ability of several bile acid compounds to secrete GLP-1 in vitro in STC-1 cells. Bile acids stimulated GLP-1 secretion from 3.3- to 6.2-fold but some were associated with cytolytic effects. Glycocholic and taurocholic acids were selected for in vivo studies in normal and GLP-1R(-/-) mice. Oral glucose tolerance tests revealed that glycocholic acid did not affect glucose excursions. However, taurocholic acid reduced glucose excursions by 40% in normal mice and by 27% in GLP-1R(-/-) mice, and plasma GLP-1 concentrations were significantly elevated 30 min post-gavage. Additional studies used incretin receptor antagonists to probe involvement of GLP-1 and GIP in taurocholic acid-induced glucose lowering. The findings suggest that bile acids partially aid glucose regulation by physiologically enhancing nutrient-induced GLP-1 secretion. However, GLP-1 secretion appears to be only part of the glucose-lowering mechanism and our studies indicate that the other major incretin GIP is not involved.
