Lastarria volcano (Chile) is located at the North-West margin of the `Lazufre' ground inflation signal (37x45 km²), constantly uplifting at a rate of ~2.5 cm/year since 1996 (Pritchard and Simons 2002; Froger et al. 2007). The Lastarria volcano has the double interest to be superimposed on a second, smaller-scale inflation signal and to be the only degassing area of the Lazufre signal. In this project, we compared daily SO2 burdens recorded by AURA's OMI mission for 2005-2010 with Ground Surface Displacements (GSD) calculated from the Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) images for 2003-2010. We found a constant maximum displacement rate of 2.44 cm/year for the period 2003-2007 and 0.80- 0.95 cm/year for the period 2007-2010. Total SO2 emitted is 67.0 kT for the period 2005-2010, but detection of weak SO2 degassing signals in the Andes remains challenging owing to increased noise in the South Atlantic radiation Anomaly region.

Background: Despite the fact breast cancer mortality has declined in recent years, the mortality gap between African-American and white women continues to grow. A part of these disparities may be due to either inadequately following guideline recommended treatment or treatment delays. Although racial/ethnic disparities in breast cancer treatment and mortality have been extensively documented, the mechanisms by which these disparities occur remain largely unknown. Social and economically influenced factors such as choice of providers, distance of treatment facility, transportation, health insurance, and job related factors may also contribute to racial differences in breast cancer treatment; however, these have not been explored sufficiently in previous research. ^ Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of social and economically influenced factors that may contribute to racial disparities in the receipt of guideline recommended treatment using the Health Disparities Model. ^ Methods: In this qualitative comparative case study, data from medical records, structured telephone interviews, and in-depth patient interviews explored the relationship between social and economically influenced factors and breast cancer treatment. Transcripts were analyzed using standard iterative process followed by immersion/crystallization approach. Participants were identified through rapid ascertainment from the New Jersey Cancer Registry and this study included 8 African-American and 8 white women aged 20-85 years old diagnosed with early stage breast cancer between 2003-2007, matched on age, race, and physician recommended treatment. ^ Results: We did not identify differences by race in factors that influenced the receipt of breast cancer treatment among the individual matched pairs. Four prominent themes emerged among women from both groups who experienced similar difficulties influenced by socioeconomic factors. Choice of providers, distance of facility, health insurance, and job related factors all contributed to breast cancer treatment experience among these women. Conclusions: We identified common issues influenced by socioeconomic factors and its relation with the receipt of breast cancer treatment, regardless of race. However, more research is needed to study the additional factors conveying racial differences affecting breast cancer treatment. ^

Over the last 2 decades, survival rates in critically ill cancer patients have improved. Despite the increase in survival, the intensive care unit (ICU) continues to be a location where end-of-life care takes place. More than 20% of deaths in the United States occur after admission to an ICU, and as baby boomers reach the seventh and eighth decades of their lives, the volume of patients in the ICU is predicted to rise. The aim of this study was to evaluate intensive care unit utilization among patients with cancer who were at the end of life. End of life was defined using decedent and high-risk cohort study designs. The decedent study evaluated characteristics and ICU utilization during the terminal hospital stay among patients who died at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center during 2003-2007. The high-risk cohort study evaluated characteristics and ICU utilization during the index hospital stay among patients admitted to MD Anderson during 2003-2007 with a high risk of in-hospital mortality. Factors associated with higher ICU utilization in the decedent study included non-local residence, hematologic and non-metastatic solid tumor malignancies, malignancy diagnosed within 2 months, and elective admission to surgical or pediatric services. Having a palliative care consultation on admission was associated with dying in the hospital without ICU services. In the cohort of patients with high risk of in-hospital mortality, patients who went to the ICU were more likely to be younger, male, with newly diagnosed non-metastatic solid tumor or hematologic malignancy, and admitted from the emergency center to one of the surgical services. A palliative care consultation on admission was associated with a decreased likelihood of having an ICU stay. There were no differences in ethnicity, marital status, comorbidities, or insurance status between patients who did and did not utilize ICU services. Inpatient mortality probability models developed for the general population are inadequate in predicting in-hospital mortality for patients with cancer. The following characteristics that differed between the decedent study and high-risk cohort study can be considered in future research to predict risk of in-hospital mortality for patients with cancer: ethnicity, type and stage of malignancy, time since diagnosis, and having advance directives. Identifying those at risk can precipitate discussions in advance to ensure care remains appropriate and in accordance with the wishes of the patient and family.^

Este Proyecto se propuso continuar las indagaciones ligadas a la teorización educacional crítica y el enfoque constructivista y su vigencia en diversas materializaciones del contexto escolar actual. Durante el desarrollo del trabajo investigativo titulado “Las voces del discurso crítico en la escuela (2003-2007)” estudiamos la puesta en acción de dichos enfoques a través de diversas formas de mediación del discurso escolar. En el actual proyecto nos ocupamos de continuar dichas indagaciones y profundizar los campos de análisis elegidos. Observamos algunas prefiguraciones de dichos enfoques y discursos en la diversidad de voces que convocan las elaboraciones Curriculares Oficiales para acreditación de los I.F.D.C. y las evaluaciones finales de la Especialización en Alfabetización Intercultural. Según lo analizado en la variedad del escenario escolar, el discurso crítico y la perspectiva constructivista asumen múltiples sentidos en donde se conjugan experiencias pedagógicas que ponen en cuestión la matriz monológica de la educación tradicional junto con planteos que enfatizan la lógica prescriptiva centrada en los mandatos del “deber ser”. Hemos analizado y puesto en tensión dichas materializaciones en diversos contextos de producción del discurso pedagógico: normativas, prescripciones, fundamentos pedagógicos, concepciones de enseñanza y aprendizaje, modalidades de implementación de propuestas, etc. Nos ocupamos de desplegar algunos aspectos en un nivel teórico tratando de situar la problemática de los enfoques presentados desde diversos campos del conocimiento. Y además indagar las implicaciones de estas perspectivas ya sea en las materializaciones mencionadas como así también sus consecuencias prácticas. Desplegamos las estrategias analíticas del discurso que tales documentaciones requieran, y sus cotejos como voces de esa toma de postura crítica. Así, en relación con los procedimientos metodológicos, nos proponemos explorar distintas versiones discursivas de dichas esferas del discurso. La línea de investigación es de tipo cualitativa, basada en la interpretación y estudio de los procesos de mediación y sus configuraciones en los dispositivos escolares y en la documentación institucional disponible.

El presente trabajo está basado en el recorte de algunos resultados y conclusiones de la investigación que desarrollé en el marco de la beca doctoral UBACyT (2003-2007) acerca de los "Aspectos histórico-libidinales en niños y niñas con problemas en sus aprendizajes que manifiestan dificultades atencionales". Se partió de la idea de que no existen niños que no atiendan en lo absoluto, que de lo que se tratará es de ubicar en qué tienen puesta su atención los niños desatentos. Las conclusiones principales fueron: La necesidad de plantear las dificultades atencionales como resultante de múltiples determinaciones y no tan sólo a causa de un supuesto déficit neurológico. La responsabilidad profesional de diferenciar diagnósticos descriptivos, de diagnósticos estructurales de sujetos en constitución. Se cuestionó la dicotomía cuerpo - mente, se propuso pensar la intersección entre “vulnerabilidad genética" y “potencialidad traumática". Se encontró una estrecha ligazón de las dificultades atencionales con las historias libidinales. Se hallaron situaciones silenciadas en todas las historias analizadas, modalidades a predominio de la desinvestidura y la preponderancia de situaciones traumáticas vivenciadas por las diferentes generaciones que el psiquismo prefiere mantener desligadas, incluso a costa del empobrecimiento subjetivo y las dificultades para simbolizar. A partir de este recorrido se proponen algunas herramientas para abordar la problemática tanto desde el espacio clínico, como escolar.

Esta investigación no es la primera en lo que hace al modo de construcción de consenso en la gestión del ex presidente Néstor Kirchner y en la de la presidente Cristina Fernández, ya que es un tema muy controvertido que actualmente reúne posturas tanto a favor, como en contra. El objetivo propuesto es detectar y analizar los principales mecanismos de construcción de consenso utilizados en el proceso de sanción de la ley de Servicios de Comunicación Audiovisuales, y en el de la ley de Democratización de la Representación Política, la Transparencia y la Equidad Electoral, sancionadas en 2009.
