Portable (roll-out) stop signs are used at school crossings in over 300 cities in Iowa. Their use conforms to the Code of Iowa, although it is not consistent with the provisions of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices adopted for nationwide application. A survey indicated that most users in Iowa believe that portable stop signs provide effective protection at school crossings, and favor their continued use. Other non-uniform signs that fold or rotate to display a STOP message only during certain hours are used at school crossings in over 60 cities in Iowa. Their use does not conform to either the Code of Iowa or the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Users of these devices also tend to favor their continued use. A survey of other states indicated that use of temporary devices similar to those used in Iowa is not generally sanctioned. Some unsanctioned use apparently occurs in several states, however. A different type of portable stop sign for school crossings is authorized and widely used in one state. Portable stop signs similar to those used in Iowa are authorized in another state, although their use is quite limited. A few reports in the literature reviewed for this research discussed the use of portable stop signs. The authors of these reports uniformly recommended against the use of portable or temporary traffic control devices. Various reasons for this recommendation were given, although data to support the recommendation were not offered. As part of this research, field surveys were conducted at 54 locations in 33 communities where temporary stop control devices were in use at school crossings. Research personnel observed the obedience to stop control and measured the vehicular delay incurred. Stopped delay averaged 1.89 seconds/entering vehicle. Only 36.6 percent of the vehicles were observed to come to a complete stop at the study locations controlled by temporary stop control devices. However, this level of obedience does not differ from that observed at intersections controlled by permanent stop signs. Accident experience was compiled for 76 intersections in 33 communities in Iowa where temporary stop signs were used and, for comparative purposes, at 76 comparable intersections having other forms of control or operating without stop control. There were no significant differences in accident experience An economic analysis of vehicle operating costs, delay costs, and other costs indicated that temporary stop control generated costs only about 12 percent as great as permanent stop control for a street having a school crossing. Midblock pedestrian-actuated signals were shown to be cost effective in comparison with temporary stop signs under the conditions of use assumed. Such signals could be used effectively at a number of locations where temporary stop signs are being used. The results of this research do not provide a basis for recommending that use of portable stop signs be prohibited. However, erratic patterns of use of these devices and inadequate designs suggest that improved standards for their use are needed. Accordingly, nine recommendations are presented to enhance the efficiency of vehicular flow at school crossings, without causing a decline in the level of pedestrian protection being afforded.

La Gimnàstica Estètica de Grup (GEG) és un esport emergent del qual no existeix gairebé cap treball de camp i/o publicació. En relació al codi de puntuació d’aquesta modalitat, tant les capacitats de salt com la unitat de moviment del cos i la sincronització entre els membres del conjunt, tenen un pes molt important en la puntuació del valor tècnic i de l’execució. En aquest estudi s’ha realitzat la mesura, avaluació i comparació de les manifestacions de la força explosiva, elàstica i reactiva d’un grup de gimnàstica d’estètica d’alt nivell al principi i al final del període competitiu, mitjançant la bateria de tests de salts verticals de Bosco, concretament SJ, CMJ, CMJas i RJ (15” CMJas). També s’ha analitzat la sincronització i/o coordinació temporal intergrupal d’execució de les dificultats tècniques de salt de les coreografies competitives, al llarg del període competitiu d’un conjunt de gimnàstica estètica d’alt nivell, tenint en compte la sincronització en començar la dificultat i en acabar-la. Els resultats obtinguts demostren que la manifestació de força elàsticoexplosiva en CMJ ha disminuït un 0,46 % i la força explosiva SJ (sense reutilització d'energia elàstica ni aprofitament del reflex miotàtic) ha augmentat un 4,63 %. Durant el període competitiu del conjunt sènior de gimnàstica estètica del Club Muntanyenc Sant Cugat, la influència dels braços en la capacitat de salt ha augmentat un 1,32% i la potència anaeròbica alàctica un 4,76%. Tot i que en la majoria de tests, els resultats han estat positius, no es considera que la mostra hagi assolit una millora significativa, atès que no ha superat el 10% proposat en començar l’estudi, i els valors obtinguts són totalment inestables. S’ha vist que en un mateix test el % de pèrdues i de guanys ha estat molt variat, de manera que no es pot establir una relació de millora de la capacitat de salt en funció de l’entrenament. Pel que fa a la sincronització temporal intergrupal, ha millorat entre un 37,50% (sincronització temps inicial) i un 50,00% (sincronització temps final) en relació a les dificultats tècniques. Fet que és relaciona directament amb l’automatització de mecanismes d’execució al llarg de la temporada competitiva. Tot i així no s’ha igualat o superat la millora d’un 70% proposada per les hipòtesis inicials de l’estudi.

In the preparation of this compilation of drainage laws of Iowa, an attempt has been made to include those sections of the Code to which reference is frequently required by the State Highway Commission, Boards of Supervisors and County Engineers in the conduct of highway and road administration as it is affected by the Iowa drainage laws. Of necessity some Code provisions which have a bearing on the principal subject were omitted. Enactments of the 56th General Assembly which modify existing code sections have been included as part of the regular text of the Code sections included in this publication. The final year project came to us as an opportunity to get involved in a topic which has appeared to be attractive during the learning process of majoring in economics: statistics and its application to the analysis of economic data, i.e. econometrics.Moreover, the combination of econometrics and computer science is a very hot topic nowadays, given the Information Technologies boom in the last decades and the consequent exponential increase in the amount of data collected and stored day by day. Data analysts able to deal with Big Data and to find useful results from it are verydemanded in these days and, according to our understanding, the work they do, although sometimes controversial in terms of ethics, is a clear source of value added both for private corporations and the public sector. For these reasons, the essence of this project is the study of a statistical instrument valid for the analysis of large datasets which is directly related to computer science: Partial Correlation Networks.The structure of the project has been determined by our objectives through the development of it. At first, the characteristics of the studied instrument are explained, from the basic ideas up to the features of the model behind it, with the final goal of presenting SPACE model as a tool for estimating interconnections in between elements in large data sets. Afterwards, an illustrated simulation is performed in order to show the power and efficiency of the model presented. And at last, the model is put into practice by analyzing a relatively large data set of real world data, with the objective of assessing whether the proposed statistical instrument is valid and useful when applied to a real multivariate time series. In short, our main goals are to present the model and evaluate if Partial Correlation Network Analysis is an effective, useful instrument and allows finding valuable results from Big Data.As a result, the findings all along this project suggest the Partial Correlation Estimation by Joint Sparse Regression Models approach presented by Peng et al. (2009) to work well under the assumption of sparsity of data. Moreover, partial correlation networks are shown to be a very valid tool to represent cross-sectional interconnections in between elements in large data sets.The scope of this project is however limited, as there are some sections in which deeper analysis would have been appropriate. Considering intertemporal connections in between elements, the choice of the tuning parameter lambda, or a deeper analysis of the results in the real data application are examples of aspects in which this project could be completed.To sum up, the analyzed statistical tool has been proved to be a very useful instrument to find relationships that connect the elements present in a large data set. And after all, partial correlation networks allow the owner of this set to observe and analyze the existing linkages that could have been omitted otherwise.

This manual provides a set of procedural rules and regulations for use in functionally classifying all roads and streets in Iowa according to the character of service they are intended to provide. Functional classification is a requirement of the 1973 Code of Iowa (Chapter 306) as amended by Senate File 1062 enacted by the 2nd session of the 65th General Assembly of Iowa. Functional classification is defined as the grouping of roads and streets into systems according to the character of service they will be expected to provide, and the assignment of jurisdiction over each class to the governmental unit having primary interest in each type of service. Stated objectives of the legislation are: "Functional classification will serve the legislator by providing an equitable basis for determination of proper source of tax support and providing for the assignment of financial resources to the governmental unit having responsibility for each class of service. Functional classification promotes the ability of the administrator to effectively prepare and carry out long range programs which reflect the transportation needs of the public." All roads and streets in legal existence will be classified. Instructions are also included in this manual for a continuous reporting to the Highway Commission of changes in classification and/or jurisdiction resulting from new construction, corporation line changes, relocations, and deletions. This continuous updating of records is absolutely essential for modern day transportation planning as it is the only possible way to monitor the status of existing road systems, and consequently determine adequacy and needs with accuracy.

Tämän työn tavoitteena oli laskea ja vertailla eroja lämmön talteenottolaitteistojen vuosihyötysuhteissa. Tavoitteena oli erityisesti löytää selkeät perusteet Suomen Rakennusmääräyskokoelman osassa D2 esitetyille arvoille vuosihyötysuhdetta laskettaessa. Työn kirjallisuusosassa on käsitelty yleisellä tasolla erityyppisten lämmön talteenottolaitteistojen teoriaa, toimintaperiaatteita ja soveltuvuutta erilaisiin käyttöolosuhteisiin. Työn empiirisessä osassa selvitettiin laboratorio-olosuhteissa virtauksessa mitattujen lämpötila- ja kosteusolosuhteiden vaikutusta lämmön talteenottolaitteiden toimintaan. Lisäksi työssä esitellään yleisellä tasolla mittauksissa käytettyjen mittalaitteiden toimintaa. Suoritettujen mittausten ja laskennan perusteella havaittiin, että laitteistojen vuosihyötysuhteiden välille saatiin odotetunlaisia eroja. Parhaimpiin tuloksiin päästiin regeneratiivisella lämmön talteenottolaitteella.

Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää velallisen rikoksiin kuuluvaa velallisen epärehellisyyttä koskevaa lainsäädäntöä (rikoslain 39 luvun 1§), säännöksen tunnusmerkistöä ja tulkintaa oikeuskäytännön avulla. Velallisen epärehellisyyteen syyllistytään hävittämällä tosiasiallisesti omaisuutta tavalla, joka loukkaa velkojia. Tutkimuksessa on pyritty selvittämään mitkä liiketoimintaan liittyvät keinot ovat sallittuja ja mitkä kiellettyjä velallisen epärehellisyysrikoksissa. Teoriaosassa käydään läpi velallisen epärehellisyyteen liittyvää lainsäädäntöä, lain esitöitä sekä aiempia tutkimuksia. Empiriaosassa käydään läpi velallisen epärehellisyysrikosten oikeustapauksia ja niiden avulla selvitetään käytännössä toteutunutta tunnusmerkistön tulkintaa. Tutkitun aineiston mukaan tyypilliset velallisen epärehellisyyteen syyllistyneet yrittäjät ovat pienten yritysten omistajayrittäjiä, jotka pelastavat heikossa taloudellisessa tilassa olevista yrityksistä varoja itselleen. Usein rikossyyte näyttää tulevan yllätyksenä, mutta on myös tapauksia joihin liittyy useita eri rikoksia ja teot vaikuttavat selvästi tahallisilta.
