The redemption of the gaze: the crisis of observation in the "fin de si��cle" and the advent of cinema

The intention of this article is not to affirm, but rather to question wether it is possible to speak of a loss of the ability to gaze in the context of the nineteenth century and especially in the context of the fin de si��cle, in the bosom of the epistemological crisis that beset the Turn of the Century. And very especially, this article tries to question about the impact this crisis had, perhaps, in the birth of cinema. Is in this context that arises the work of Marey and the advent of the cinematograph of the Lumi��re brothers in the fin de si��cle Europe, both of them showing a deep faith in a mechanical apparatus that would allow the redemption of a battered gaze. And it seems to be a dream that continues over time through the tradition of shooting the everyday life.

Joaquim Mir y la tienda de juguetes: microhistoria de un retrato

��Puede un retrato pict��rico suscitar un ejercicio de microhistoria? Nuestra investigaci��n tratar�� de aportar una respuesta positiva a esta cuesti��n, analizando para ello uno de los pocos retratos del pintor postimpresionista Joaquim Mir Trinxet, fechado en 1926. El protagonista representado no es otro que el suegro del pintor, Antoni Estalella i Trinxet, un insigne personaje de Vilanova y la Geltr�� (Barcelona) que vivi�� entre dos siglos. La obra est�� ambientada en la tienda de juguetes de la familia, convirti��ndose as�� en una de las escasas pinturas que han captado el interior de una jugueter��a en la Espa��a anterior a la Guerra Civil. Gracias a los trabajos de archivo realizados, este art��culo re��ne diversos documentos in��ditos que permiten reconstruir no s��lo la vida del retratado, que lleg�� a ser corresponsal de Francisco Pi y Margall, sino tambi��n el ambiente social, art��stico y comercial de Vilanova, en un per��odo que abarca desde la d��cada de 1870 a la primera mitad del siglo XX, en plena ���Edad de Oro��� de la industria juguetera. Es esta una propuesta de metodolog��a historiogr��fica cuyo recorrido comienza en el oficio arcaico de la toneler��a para desembocar al fin en los albores del comercio moderno de juguetes.

Tales Out of School ��� The ���Hidden Curriculum��� in National Schools in the North of Ireland During the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries

The paper addresses the possibility of the existence of a ���hidden curriculum��� in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century National Schools by comparing working practices evident from an analysis of a sample of schools from two case study areas in the north of Ireland ��� Derry City and the rural area of Boho/Derrygonnelly in western County Fermanagh. The relationship between the placement of the school buildings and variations in their external appearances are examined in respect to their relationships with different churches. The possible significance of this relationship is scrutinised given that the primary aim of the National School system was joint secular education in a religiously divided society. Both the external and internal architecture of the buildings are also examined for the purposes of reconstructing aspects of the intentions and practices that governed their use. In particular, the relationship between allocated space and the categories of age and gender are studied by means of an access analysis of the floor plans of a representative sample of primary schools from both case study areas. Information derived from oral history accounts, archived material from the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) and school registers is used to supplement the findings obtained from the architectural analyses.

Energy levels, radiative rates and electron impact excitation rates for transitions in Be-like Ti XIX

<p>We report calculations of energy levels, radiative rates and electron impact excitation cross sections and rates for transitions in Be-like Ti XIX. The general-purpose relativistic atomic structure package is adopted for calculating energy levels and radiative rates. For determining the collision strengths and subsequently the excitation rates, the Dirac atomic R-matrix code (darc) is used. Oscillator strengths, radiative rates and line strengths are reported for all E1, E2, M1 and M2 transitions among the lowest 98 levels of the n��� 4 configurations. Additionally, theoretical lifetimes are listed for all 98 levels. Collision strengths are averaged over a Maxwellian velocity distribution and the effective collision strengths obtained listed over a wide temperature range up to 10 ^7.7K. Comparisons are made with similar data obtained from the flexible atomic code (fac) to highlight the importance of resonances, included in calculations with darc, in the determination of effective collision strengths. Discrepancies between the collision strengths from darc and fac, particularly for forbidden transitions, are also discussed.��</p>

The Glasgow 2014 XX Commonwealth Games and Scottish Independence: ���Political Truce��� or Political Truth(s)?

This paper explores the political reaction to Lord McConnell���s appeal for a political ���truce��� in the form of a temporary halt to campaigning by all political parties and organisations involved in the debate regarding the Scottish independence referendum during the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games (BBC, 2014; McConnell, 2014). Urging both sides of the debate to cease campaigning for the two-week period of the Glasgow 2014 games, the current Labour peer and past First Minister of the Scottish Parliament cited concerns that there are ���genuine concerns that the Games, and the image of Scotland, could be damaged by attempts by either side ��� for and against ��� to use the Games to promote their cause, or to use the venues for campaigning��� (McConnell, 2014). Drawing upon the principles of both a critical discourse and a narrative analysis methodological approach, this paper will scrutinise the nature of the political reactions to McConnell���s proposal from a variety of perspectives on both sides of the independence referendum debate. In particular, the emphasis in the responses from both sides of the debate regarding the apolitical nature of the 2014 Games will be critiqued, drawing upon the arguments of past analyses of sporting mega-events which highlight the potential for political exploitation of such events by the host nations (e.g. Horne, 2007; Grix, 2012; Houlihan and Giulianotti, 2012; Roche, 2006). Furthermore, the findings of academic research on the political implications of hosting the Commonwealth Games will be considered (e.g. Majumdar and Mehta, 2010; Van Der Westhuizen, 2004; Macintosh and Greenhorn, 1992; Majumdar, 2011; Lockstone and Baum, 2010; Macfarlane and Herd, 1986), highlighting a number of precedents which demonstrate the numerous challenges faced in any attempts to the keep the 2014 Games free from political influence.

A Migrant Culture on Display: The French Migrant and French Gastronomy in London (19th ��� 21st centuries)

The large contemporary French migrant population ��� estimated by the French Consulate at around 300,000���400,000 in the UK, the majority living in London and the South-East ��� remains ���absent��� from studies on migration, and, in a study of migrant food history in Britain, is considered not to have left traces as a migrant community. Over the centuries, the presence of various French communities in London has varied significantly as far as numbers are concerned, but what does not change is their simultaneous ���visibility��� and ���invisibility��� in accounts of the history of the capital: even when relatively ���visible��� at certain historical moments, they still often remain hidden in its histories. At times the French in London are described as a ���sober, well-behaved [���] and law-abiding community���; at other times they ���appeared as a foreign body in the city���. This article reflects on the dynamics at play between a migrant culture associated with high cultural capital (so much so that is often emulated by those who are not French) and the host culture perception of and relationship to it, in order to consider what this may ���mean��� for the French (and Francophone) migrant experience. French gastronomy and culinary knowledge is taken as an example of material culture and of cultural capital ���on display��� specifically in the activity of dining out, especially in French restaurants, or in those influenced by French gastronomy. The social activity of dining out is replete with displays of knowledge (linguistic, culinary), of cultural literacy, of modes of behaviour, of public identity, and of rituals strictly codified in both migrant and host cultures. Dining out is also an emotional and politically-charged activity, fraught with feelings of suspicion (what is in the food? what does the chef get up to in the kitchen?) and of anxieties and tensions concerning status, class and gender distinctions. This article considers the ways in which the migrant French citizen of London may be considered as occupying an ambiguous position at different times in history, simultaneously possessing cultural capital and needing to negotiate complex cultural encounters in the connections between identity and the symbolic status of food in food production, food purveying and food consumption.

An��lise s��smica e proposta de refor��o de uma estrutura do s��c. XIX sujeita a uma reabilita����o parcial

Evolu����o hidrogeoqu��mica das ��guas sulf��reas de Entre-os-Rios: avalia����o preliminar

O principal objectivo desta disserta����o foi avaliar a evolu����o hidrogeoqu��mica das ��guas minerais de Entre���os���Rios, para uma melhor compreens��o do modelo hidrogeol��gico conceptual deste sistema hidromineral. Desta forma, foram coligidos diversos dados hidroqu��micos, quer das nascentes cl��ssicas (Torre, Curveira, Ardias, Arcos Esquerda e Arcos Direita), quer do furo Barbeitos. Foram compiladas e analisadas oitenta an��lises hidroqu��micas no per��odo 1938���2012, incluindo caracter��sticas organol��pticas (cheiro, cor e turbidez), diversas propriedades f��sico-qu��micas (temperatura, pH, condutividade el��ctrica, sulfura����o, etc), os principais cati��es e ani��es (bicarbonato, fluoreto, s��dio, l��tio, etc) e os elementos vestigi��rios (chumbo, tungst��nio, boro, etc). Al��m disso, foram integrados os dados hist��ricos dispon��veis de finais do s��culo XIX e in��cios do s��culo XX. Foram igualmente reunidos e discutidos alguns dados isot��picos (oxig��nio���18, deut��rio e tr��tio). O recurso hidromineral de Entre���os���Rios est�� condicionado pela litologia e pelas condi����es tect��nicas. As an��lises qu��micas revelaram que as ��guas minerais de Entre���os���Rios apresentam uma estabilidade qu��mica nos ��ltimos 100 anos. Estas ��guas s��o orto��� a hipertermais, fracamente mineralizadas, de reac����o alcalina, sulf��dricas, bicarbonatadas s��dicas, carbonatadas e muito fluoretadas. Estas caracter��sticas s��o claramente distintas das ��guas normais da regi��o. As ��guas de Entre���os���Rios s��o muito semelhantes ��s ��guas minerais de S. Vicente e, em diversos par��metros, bastante diferentes das ��guas minerais das Caldas da Sa��de. Os dados isot��picos permitiram concluir que as ��guas de Entre���os���Rios t��m uma origem mete��rica, com um tempo de resid��ncia longo no sistema aqu��fero, e que s��o, muito provavelmente, submodernas, com uma recarga anterior a 1952. Na regi��o de Entre���os���Rios coexistem tr��s sistemas aqu��feros, um sistema gran��tico superficial, livre e um sistema livre a semi���confinado, ambos com circula����o de ��guas normais, e um sistema aqu��fero gran��tico, profundo, confinado, com circula����o de ��gua mineral.
