Nanostructured ceria-zirconia solid solutions (Ce1 − xZrxO2, X = 0 to 0.9) have been synthesized by a single step solution combustion process using cerous nitrate, zirconyl nitrate and oxalyl dihydrazide (ODH) / carbohydrazide (CH). The as-synthesized powders show extensive XRD line broadening and the crystallite sizes calculated from the XRD line broadening are in the nanometer range (6–11 nm). The combustion derived ceria zirconia solid solutions have high surface area in the range of 36–120 m2/g. Calcination of Ce1 −xZrxO2 at 1350 °C showed three distinct solid solution regions: single phase cubic (x ≤ 0.2), biphasic cubic-tetragonal (0.2 < x Image .8) and tetragonal (x > 0.8). When x ≥ 0.9, the metastable tetragonal phase formed transforms to monoclinic phase on cooling after calcination above 1100 °C. The homogeneity of Ce1 − xZrxO2 has been confirmed by EDAX analysis. The Temperature Programmed Reduction (TPR) measurement of Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 was carried out with H2 and the TPR profile showed two water formation peaks corresponding to the utilization of surface and bulk oxygen.

Deintercalation of amines from the layered amine adducts of WO3, MoO3 and W1-xMoxO3 has been employed as a soft chemical route to produce unusual metastable structures of the oxides. After the adducts of WO3, MoO3 and W1-xMoxO3 (x = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75) with amines such as triethylamine (TEA), pyridine, n-butylamine and n-octylamine had been characterized, deintercalation was carried out thermally as well as by acid leaching. Thermal deintercalation yielded novel metastable structures of WO3 and MoO3 that were significantly different from the stable forms, which contain distorted metal-oxygen octahedra. Thus, ReO3-type cubic WO3 was obtained by the thermal deintercalation of WO3 . 0.5 TEA. Acid leaching of the amines gave metastable phases of WO3, MoO3 and W1-xMoxO3, which were different from those obtained thermally. All the metastable phases transformed to the corresponding stable forms at higher temperatures.

The Gibbs free energies of formation of strontium and barium zirconates have been determined in the temperature range 960 to 1210 K using electrochemical cells incorporating the respective alkaline-earth fluoride single crystals as solid electrolytes. Pure strontium and barium monoxides were used in the reference electrodes. During measurements on barium zirconate, the oxygen partial pressure in the gas phase over the electrodes was maintained at a low value of 18.7 Pa to minimize the solubility of barium peroxide in the monoxide phase. Strontium zirconate was found to undergo a phase transition from orthorhombic perovskite to) with space group Cmcm; D-2h(17) to tetragonal perovskite (t) having the space group 14/mcm; D-4h(18) at 1123 (+/- 10) K. Barium zirconate does not appear to undergo a phase transition in the temperature range of measurement. It has the cubic perovskite (c) structure. The standard free energies of formation of the zirconates from their component binary oxides AO (A = Sr, Ba) with rock salt (rs) and ZrO2 with monoclinic (m) structures can be expressed by the following relations:SrO (rs) + ZrO2 (m) --> SrZrO3 (o) Delta G degrees = -74,880 - 14.2T (+/-200) J mol(-1) SrO (rs) + ZrO2 (m) --> SrZrO3 (t) Delta G degrees = -73,645 - 15.3T (+/-200) J mol(-1) BaO (rs) + ZrO2 (m) --> BaZrO4 (c) Delta G degrees = -127,760 - 1.79T (+/-250) J mol(-1) The results of this study are in reasonable agreement with calorimetric measurements reported in the literature. Systematic trends in the stability of alkaline-earth zirconates having the stoichiometry AZrO(3) are discussed.

Members of the Ba2Zn1-xCdxTa2O9 (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1) series have been synthesized by solid state reactions at 1473K. Powder x-ray diffraction studies show a cubic perovskite cell with a similar to 4.1 Angstrom which increases with increase in x. Electron diffraction studies show the presence of hexagonal ordered perovskite structure in addition to the cubic structure seen by x-rays, the x = 0.5 composition showing more ordered crystallites. These samples show high dielectric constants with a maximum (epsilon(r) = 30 at 1 kHz) for the x = 0.5 member. The dielectric loss increases with increase in x at all the frequencies under study.

The understanding and control of anisotropy in Fe films grown on cubic systems such as GaAs and MgO has been of interest from the point of view of applications in devices. We report magnetic anisotropy studies on Fe/GaAs(001) and Fe/MgO/GaAs(001) prepared by pulsed laser deposition. In Fe/GaAs(001), magneto optical Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements revealed a dominant uniaxial anisotropy for Fe thickness less than 20 monolayers (ML) and this was confirmed by ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) studies. Multiple steps in the hysteresis loops were observed for Fe films of thickness 20 and 25 ML. Whereas, in Fe/MgO/GaAs(001), even at 25 ML of Fe, the uniaxial anisotropy remained dominant. The anisotropy constants obtained from FMR spectra have shown that the relative strength of uniaxial anisotropy is higher as compared to the cubic anisotropy constant in the case of Fe/MgO/GaAs(001). The humidity, heat flux and mass flow sensing capability of n-BaTiO3 and its solid solutions were evaluated based on their dissipation characteristics. The cubic/tetragonal phase content of the ceramics seem to play an important role in their sensitivity towards the measurand. The humidity-sensitive characteristics of these perovskites were studied with respect to different moisture sensitive coating materials. The sensor was also used to determine the heat of hydration during the curing process of cements and the mass flow rate of the gases. For all these applications, suitable operating points have been fixed from the highly non-linear I-V characteristics with the retention of good stability and high sensitivity. The crystal structure, thermal expansion and electrical conductivity of the solid solution Nd0.7Sr0.3Fe1-xCoxO3 for 0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.8 were investigated. All compositions had the GdFeO3-type orthorhombic perovskite structure. The lattice parameters were determined at room temperature by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD). The pseudo-cubic lattice constant decreased continuously with x. The average linear thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) in the temperature range from 573 to 973 K was found to increase with x. The thermal expansion curves for all values of x displayed rapid increase in slope at high temperatures. The electrical conductivity increased with x for the entire temperature range of measurement. The calculated activation energy values indicate that electrical conduction takes place primarily by the small polaron hopping mechanism. The charge compensation for the divalent ion on the A-site is provided by the formation of Fe4+ ions on the B-site (in preference to Co4+ ions) and vacancies on the oxygen sublattice for low values of x. The large increase in the conductivity with x in the range from 0.6 to 0.8 is attributed to the substitution of Fe4+ ions by Co4+ ions. The Fe site has a lower small polaron site energy than Co and hence behaves like a carrier trap, thereby drastically reducing the conductivity. The non-linear behaviour in the dependence of log sigmaT with reciprocal temperature can be attributed to the generation of additional charge carriers with increasing temperature by the charge disproportionation of Co3+ ions. Nanoembedded aluminum alloys with bimetallic dispersoids of Sn and Pb of compositions Sn-82-Pb-18,Pb- Sn-64-Pb-36, and Sn-54-Pb-46 were synthesized by rapid solidification. The two phases, face-centered-cubic Pb and tetragonal Sn solid-solution, coexist in all the particles. The crystallographic relation between the two phases and the matrix depends upon the solidification pathways adopted by the particles. For Al-(Sn-82-Pb-18), we report a new orientation relation given by [011]Al//[010]Sn and (011)Al//(101)Sn. Pb exhibits a cube-on-cube orientation with Al in few particles, while in others no orientation relationship could be observed. In contrast, Pb in Sn-64-Pb-36 and Sn-54-Pb-46 particles always exhibits cube-on-cube orientation with the matrix. Sn does not show any orientation relationship with Al or Pb in these cases. Differential scanning calorimetry studies revealed melting at eutectic temperature for all compositions, although solidification pathways are different. Attempts were made to correlate these with the melting and heterogeneous nucleation. characteristics.

Because of the wide variety of projected applications of ultrapure nitrides in advanced technologies, there is interest in developing new cost-effective methods of synthesis. Explored in this study is the use of ammonia and hydrazine for the synthesis of nitrides from oxides, sulfides and chlorides. Even when the standard Gibbs energy change for the nitridation reactions involved are moderately positive, the reaction can be made to proceed by lowering the partial pressure of the product gas below its equilibrium value. Use of a metastable form of precursor in the nanometric size range is an alternative method to facilitate nitridation. Ellingham-Richardson-Jeffes diagrams are used for a panoramic presentation of the driving force for each set of reactions as a function of temperature. Oxides are the least promising precursors for nitride synthesis; sulfides offer a larger synthetic window for many useful nitrides such as BN, AlN, InN, VN, TiN, ThN and Si3N4. The standard Gibbs free energy changes for reactions involving chlorides with either ammonia or hydrazine are much more negative. Hydrazine is a more powerful nitriding agent than ammonia. The metastability of hydrazine requires that it be introduced into a reactor through a water-cooled lance. The use of volatile halides with ammonia or hydrazine offers the potential for synthesis of pure and doped nanocrystalline nitrides. Nitride thin films can also be prepared by suitable adaptations of the chloride route. (C) 2002 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

We examine the symmetry-breaking transitions in equilibrium shapes of coherent precipitates in two-dimensional (2-D) systems under a plane-strain condition with the principal misfit strain components epsilon(xx)*. and epsilon(yy)*. For systems with cubic elastic moduli, we first show all the shape transitions associated with different values of t = epsilon(yy)*/epsilon(xx)*. We also characterize each of these transitions, by studying its dependence on elastic anisotropy and inhomogeneity. For systems with dilatational misfit (t = 1) and those with pure shear misfit (t = -1), the transition is from an equiaxed shape to an elongated shape, resulting in a break in rotational symmetry. For systems with nondilatational misfit (-1 < t < 1; t not equal 0), the transition involves a break in mirror symmetries normal to the x- and y-axes. The transition is continuous in all cases, except when 0 < t < 1. For systems which allow an invariant line (-1 less than or equal to t < 0), the critical size increases with an increase in the particle stiffness. However, for systems which do not allow an invariant line (0 < t less than or equal to 1), the critical size first decreases, reaches a minimum, and then starts increasing with increasing particle stiffness; moreover, the transition is also forbidden when the particle stiffness is greater than a critical value.

A method for the preparation of acicular hydrogoethite (alpha -FeOOH.xH(2)O, 0.1 < x < 0.22) particles of 0.3-1 mm length has been optimized by air oxidation of Fe( II) hydroxide gel precipitated from aqueous (NH4)(2)Fe(SO4)(2) solutions containing 0.005-0.02 atom% of cationic Pt, Pd or Rh additives as morphology controlling agents. Hydrogoethite particles are evolved from the amorphous ferrous hydroxide gel by heterogeneous nucleation and growth. Preferential adsorption of additives on certain crystallographic planes thereby retarding the growth in the perpendicular direction, allows the particles to acquire acicular shapes with high aspect ratios of 8-15. Synthetic hydrogoethite showed a mass loss of about 14% at similar to 280 degreesC, revealing the presence of strongly coordinated water of hydration in the interior of the goethite crystallites. As evident from IR spectra, excess H2O molecules (0.1- 0.22 per formula unit) are located in the strands of channels formed in between the double ribbons of FeO6 octahedra running parallel to the c- axis. Hydrogoethite particles constituted of multicrystallites are formed with Pt as additive, whereas single crystallite particles are obtained with Pd (or Rh). For both dehydroxylation as well as H-2 reduction, a lower reaction temperature (similar to 220 degreesC) was observed for the former (Pt treated) compared to the latter (Pd or Rh) (similar to 260 degreesC). Acicular magnetite (Fe3O4) was prepared either by reducing hydrogoethite (magnetite route) or dehydroxylating hydrogoethite to hematite and then reducing it to magnetite (hematite- magnetite route). According to TEM studies, preferential dehydroxylation of hydrogoethite along < 010 > leads to microporous hematite. Maghemite (gamma -Fe2O3 (-) (delta), 0 <

Cathodic reduction of oxygen in fuel cells is known to be enhanced on platinum alloys in relation to the platinum metal. The higher performance of the platinum alloys is as a result of the improved oxygen-reduction kinetics on the alloys but there is hardly any increase in the electrode platinum-surface-areas for the platinum alloys as compared to the platinum metal, and thus the higher performance is solely due to the enhanced electrocatalytic activity of the alloys as compared to the platinum metal. The present X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) study on carbon-supported Pt, Pt–Co and Pt–Co–Cr electrocatalysts suggests the presence of a relatively lower Pt-oxide content on the alloys. The X-ray powder diffraction patterns for these electrocatalysts show that while the carbon-supported platinum electrocatalyst has a face-centered cubic (fcc) phase, carbon-supported Pt–Co and Pt–Co–Cr electrocatalysts exhibit a face-centered tetragonal (fct) phase. But, Pt electrocatalyst has a lower particle-size and, hence, a higher dispersion. Previous studies have shown higher activities on the Pt-alloys than on Pt, and have attributed it to changes in the electronic and structural characteristics of Pt. These changes can be correlated with the lower oxidation-state of Pt sites, as found in this study.

Potassium doped lanthanum manganites have been synthesized from KCl, KBr and KI fluxes at 900, 850 and 750 °C respectively. While all the flux-grown oxides are ferromagnetic metals (Tc=290–330 K), the oxides grown from KCl and KBr fluxes crystallize in the rhombohedral structure and that synthesized from KI flux adopts the cubic structure. The enhancement in Tc correlates with the increasing tendency of the flux to get oxidized and decreasing melting points of the flux. Nearly stoichiometric (LaK)MnO3 with 33 % of Mn4+ concentration could be prepared at temperature as low as 750 °C. Composition of all the phases have been obtained from the chemical analysis of the elements present.

Several variants of hydrated sodium cadmium bisulfate, Na(2)Cd(2)(SO(4))(3) center dot 3H(2)O, Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) center dot 2H(2)O, and Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) center dot 4H(2)O have been synthesized, and their thermal properties followed by phase transitions have been invesigated. The formation of these phases depends on the stochiometry and the time taken for crystallization from water. Na(2)Cd(2)(SO(4))(3)center dot 3H(2)O, which crystallizes in the trigonal system, space group P3c, is grown from the aqueous solution in about four weeks. The krohnkite type mineral Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) center dot 2H(2)O and the mineral astrakhanite, also known as blodite, Na(2)Cd (SO(4))(2)center dot 4H(2)O, crystallize concomittantly in about 24 weeks. Both these minerals belong to the monoclinic system(space group P2(1)/c). Na(2)Cd(2)(SO(4))(3)center dot 3H(2)O loses water completely when heated to 250 degrees C and transforms to a dehydrated phase (cubic system, space group I (4) over bar 3d) whose structure has been established using ab initio powder diffration techniques. Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2)center dot 2H(2)O transforms to alpha-Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) (space group C2/c) on heating to 150 degrees C which is a known high ionic conductor and remains intact over prolonged periods of exposure to moisture (over six months). However, when alpha-Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) is heated to 570 degrees C followed by sudden quenching in liquid nitrogen beta-Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) (P2(1)/c) is formed. beta-Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) takes up water from the atmosphere and gets converted completely to the krohnkite type mineral in about four weeks. Further, beta-Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) has a conductivity behavior comparable to the a-form up to 280 degrees C, the temperature required for the transformation of the beta- to alpha-form. These experiments demonstrate the possibility of utilizing the abundantly available mineral sources as precursors to design materials with special properties.
