The Atlantic Forest biome, reduced to 12% of its original coverage, holds a significant portion of brazilian biodiversity, with high levels of endemism. Among the few remaining areas of the Atlantic, there is the region between the Complex of Cantareira and the municipality of Nazaré Paulista, which will be the object of study of this work. Using the concepts of Landscape Ecology, and analysis of thematic maps, this study aims to characterize the region in a ecologically scaled perspective, identifying two types of hotspots: i) for conservation and ii) for maintain habitat connectivity. Concepts of Landscape Ecology as landscape structure, patches, matrix, corridors (structural and functional) and connectivity, as well as their effects on local biodiversity was adopted and applied in the study region. We also analyzed the effects of roads, hydrographic system, Permanent Protection Areas (PPAs), and Conservation Units for flora and fauna maintenance at regional scale. This allowed us to define strategies and priority areas for the conservation and restoration of forest fragments of Atlantic Forest remnants within the study region. This study generated relevant knowledge for a better planning the region in order to create best conditions for the maintenance of regional biodiversity, and consequently, allowing to improve the quality of life for local population

The human development requires that urban and industrial centers to be interconnected, with different modes of transport, among which the land transport is the most important. The roads may cross sections of remnant forests, which contain considerable diversity of species. Besides habitat fragmentation, the roads can also hinder connectivity between different patches. This kind of impact is not very well known. We reviewed the literature on Road Ecology in the Neotropics, and its relation to conservation of the biodiversity. We considered 32 papers on this issue. We compiled what is known and what the direction to take, as well as failures to be avoid in the samples, for future studies involving Road Ecology. Despite the growing trend of this subject, flaws in the methods for this type of studies show that there is no standardization of sampling effort or of experimental design for these studies. We also found that there is a lack of study of some taxonomic classes. The simple animal roadkills records do not make clear the impacts of the roads. The necessity of different designs for specific taxonomic classes must be considered, in order to produce better quality data and reliable results. Animals can avoid roads, getting isolated and limited to smaller areas of life. The dispersal and colonization of exotic flora species are facilitated by roads. Nevertheless, it is not known how or at which scale, these invasions impact the local communities. Finally, we proposed a flowchart as a conceptual model illustrating the potential impacts of roads on biodiversity and ecology interactions

In this study we analyzed the influence of demographic parameters on the population dynamics of Tribolium castaneum, combining empiricism and population theory to analyze the different effects of environmental heterogeneity, by employing Ricker models, designed to study a two-patch system taking into account deterministic and stochastic analysis. Results were expressed by bifurcation diagrams and stochastic simulations. Dynamic equilibrium was widely investigated with results suggesting specific parametric spaces in response to environmental heterogeneity and migration. Population equilibrium patterns, synchrony and persistence in T. castaneum were discussed

This work was based to study the influence of the storage temperature (cold and room temperature) in the quality of inflorescences strelitzia. The scapes were selected, labeled and there were zero problems concerning mechanical damage, disease and/or plagues. Subsequently this period, the scapes were moved randomly to recipients with water, in which two postharvest trials were conducted. In experiment 1, the flower scapes were placed in buckets with water from public supply and sanitation department and taken to a cold room at temperature of 7.5 degrees C and RH of 90%, for a twelve day period. For the experiment 2, were kept under the same conditions but at room temperature for a period of six days. In both experiments, the visual analysis: color, gloss, stains (by assigning notes), opening and drop florets (count) were evaluated at intervals of four days in cold and every 48 hours at ambient temperature conditions. In both experiments, the visual analysis: color, gloss, stains (by assigning notes), opening and drop florets (count) were evaluated at intervals of four days in cold and every 48 hours at ambient temperature conditions. The sepal is the organ that showed greater loss in coloration. The variable gloss showed the same pattern for the two experiments. Incidences of stains on the inflorescences occurred in patches at room temperature. The scapes increased number of florets open in cold. This tendency did not occur at room temperature. No were observed differences in the fall of florets. Conclude that the storage temperature does not contribute to postharvest quality of strelitzia.
