This project examines the current available work on the explicit and implicit parallelization of the R scripting language and reports on experimental findings for the development of a model for predicting effective points for automatic parallelization to be performed, based upon input data sizes and function complexity. After finding or creating a series of custom benchmarks, an interval based on data size and time complexity where replacement becomes a viable option was found; specifically between O(N) and O(N3) exclusive. As data size increases, the benefits of parallel processing become more apparent and a point is reached where those benefits outweigh the costs in memory transfer time. Based on our observations, this point can be predicted with a fair amount of accuracy using regression on a sample of approximately ten data sizes spread evenly between a system determined minimum and maximum size.

Two new methodologies are introduced to improve inference in the evaluation of mutual fund performance against benchmarks. First, the benchmark models are estimated using panel methods with both fund and time effects. Second, the non-normality of individual mutual fund returns is accounted for by using panel bootstrap methods. We also augment the standard benchmark factors with fund-specific characteristics, such as fund size. Using a dataset of UK equity mutual fund returns, we find that fund size has a negative effect on the average fund manager’s benchmark-adjusted performance. Further, when we allow for time effects and the non-normality of fund returns, we find that there is no evidence that even the best performing fund managers can significantly out-perform the augmented benchmarks after fund management charges are taken into account.

A finite-strain solid–shell element is proposed. It is based on least-squares in-plane assumed strains, assumed natural transverse shear and normal strains. The singular value decomposition (SVD) is used to define local (integration-point) orthogonal frames-of-reference solely from the Jacobian matrix. The complete finite-strain formulation is derived and tested. Assumed strains obtained from least-squares fitting are an alternative to the enhanced-assumed-strain (EAS) formulations and, in contrast with these, the result is an element satisfying the Patch test. There are no additional degrees-of-freedom, as it is the case with the enhanced-assumed-strain case, even by means of static condensation. Least-squares fitting produces invariant finite strain elements which are shear-locking free and amenable to be incorporated in large-scale codes. With that goal, we use automatically generated code produced by AceGen and Mathematica. All benchmarks show excellent results, similar to the best available shell and hybrid solid elements with significantly lower computational cost.

We propose an alternative crack propagation algo- rithm which effectively circumvents the variable transfer procedure adopted with classical mesh adaptation algo- rithms. The present alternative consists of two stages: a mesh-creation stage where a local damage model is employed with the objective of defining a crack-conforming mesh and a subsequent analysis stage with a localization limiter in the form of a modified screened Poisson equation which is exempt of crack path calculations. In the second stage, the crack naturally occurs within the refined region. A staggered scheme for standard equilibrium and screened Poisson equa- tions is used in this second stage. Element subdivision is based on edge split operations using a constitutive quantity (damage). To assess the robustness and accuracy of this algo- rithm, we use five quasi-brittle benchmarks, all successfully solved.

We propose a crack propagation algorithm which is independent of particular constitutive laws and specific element technology. It consists of a localization limiter in the form of the screened Poisson equation with local mesh refinement. This combination allows the cap- turing of strain localization with good resolution, even in the absence of a sufficiently fine initial mesh. In addition, crack paths are implicitly defined from the localized region, cir- cumventing the need for a specific direction criterion. Observed phenomena such as mul- tiple crack growth and shielding emerge naturally from the algorithm. In contrast with alternative regularization algorithms, curved cracks are correctly represented. A staggered scheme for standard equilibrium and screened equations is used. Element subdivision is based on edge split operations using a given constitutive quantity (either damage or void fraction). To assess the robustness and accuracy of this algorithm, we use both quasi-brittle benchmarks and ductile tests.

SUMMARY This article intent to analyze the geographic characteristics of sector of the General Valley. The junction of Buena Vista and Chirripó rivers was chosen in order to delimit the area; or in other words, starting from the origin of the General river to its junction with the Peñas Blancas river, that corresponds to the left margin of the General river, between the benchmarks 500 meters to the south of the area and 1000 meters to the north. The area being studied has a surface area of 87.7 square kilometers and a total of 3.251 habitants (map nº 1). Expansion occurs on the left side of the General River whose center of attraction is the old town of General Viejo, located between Rivas and the Juntas Pacuar; in general, it coincides with the political-administrative limits of the second district of Perez Zeledon canton. The application of the work method used in regional geography is also contemplated. As such, the elaborated work plan takes into account the human and physical aspects. In the combined total of the production structure, the changes that occurred in the land use between the years 1973-1979, was chosen as a base; in this sense, a global explanation is given of the elements that intervened in order to make possible such changes and of the functions of the current economic system.
