This article presents a time domain approach to the flutter analysis of a missile-type wing/body configuration with concentrated structural non-linearities. The missile wing is considered fully movable and its rotation angle contains the structural freeplay-type non-linearity. Although a general formulation for flexible configurations is developed, only two rigid degrees of freedom are taken into account for the results: pitching of the whole wing/body configuration and wing rotation angle around its hinge. An unsteady aerodynamic model based on the slender-body approach is used to calculate aerodynamic generalized forces. Limit-cycle oscillations and chaotic motion below the flutter speed are observed in this study.

A method is presented to construct computationally efficient reduced-order models (ROMs) of three-dimensional aerodynamic flows around commercial aircraft components. The method is based on the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of a set of steady snapshots, which are calculated using an industrial solver based on some Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. The POD-mode amplitudes are calculated by minimizing a residual defined from the Euler equations, even though the snapshots themselves are calculated from viscous equations. This makes the ROM independent of the peculiarities of the solver used to calculate the snapshots. Also, both the POD modes and the residual are calculated using points in the computational mesh that are concentrated in a close vicinity of the aircraft, which constitute a much smaller number than the total number of mesh points. Despite these simplifications, the method provides quite good approximations of the flow variables distributions in the whole computational domain, including the boundary layer attached to the aircraft surface and the wake. Thus, the method is both robust and computationally efficient, which is checked considering the aerodynamic flow around a horizontal tail plane, in the transonic range 0.4?Mach number?0.8, ?3°?angle of attack?3°.

The door-closing process can reinforce the impression of a solid, rock-proof, car body or of a rather cheap, flimsy vehicle. As there are no real prototypes during rubber profile bidding-out stages, engineers need to carry out non-linear numerical simulations that involve complex phenomena as well as static and dynamic loads for several profile candidates. This paper presents a structured virtual design tool based on FEM, including constitutive laws and incompressibility constraints allowing to predict more realistically the final closing forces and even to estimate sealing overpressure as an additional guarantee of noise insulation. Comparisons with results of physical tests are performed.

An aerodynamic optimization of the ICE 2 high-speed train nose in term of front wind action sensitivity is carried out in this paper. The nose is parametrically defined by Be?zier Curves, and a three-dimensional representation of the nose is obtained using thirty one design variables. This implies a more complete parametrization, allowing the representation of a real model. In order to perform this study a genetic algorithm (GA) is used. Using a GA involves a large number of evaluations before finding such optimal. Hence it is proposed the use of metamodels or surrogate models to replace Navier-Stokes solver and speed up the optimization process. Adaptive sampling is considered to optimize surrogate model fitting and minimize computational cost when dealing with a very large number of design parameters. The paper introduces the feasi- bility of using GA in combination with metamodels for real high-speed train geometry optimization.

The response of high-speed bridges at resonance, particularly under flexural vibrations, constitutes a subject of research for many scientists and engineers at the moment. The topic is of great interest because, as a matter of fact, such kind of behaviour is not unlikely to happen due to the elevated operating speeds of modern rains, which in many cases are equal to or even exceed 300 km/h ( [1,2]). The present paper addresses the subject of the evolution of the wheel-rail contact forces during resonance situations in simply supported bridges. Based on a dimensionless formulation of the equations of motion presented in [4], very similar to the one introduced by Klasztorny and Langer in [3], a parametric study is conducted and the contact forces in realistic situations analysed in detail. The effects of rail and wheel irregularities are not included in the model. The bridge is idealised as an Euler-Bernoulli beam, while the train is simulated by a system consisting of rigid bodies, springs and dampers. The situations such that a severe reduction of the contact force could take place are identified and compared with typical situations in actual bridges. To this end, the simply supported bridge is excited at resonace by means of a theoretical train consisting of 15 equidistant axles. The mechanical characteristics of all axles (unsprung mass, semi-sprung mass, and primary suspension system) are identical. This theoretical train permits the identification of the key parameters having an influence on the wheel-rail contact forces. In addition, a real case of a 17.5 m bridges traversed by the Eurostar train is analysed and checked against the theoretical results. The influence of three fundamental parameters is investigated in great detail: a) the ratio of the fundamental frequency of the bridge and natural frequency of the primary suspension of the vehicle; b) the ratio of the total mass of the bridge and the semi-sprung mass of the vehicle and c) the ratio between the length of the bridge and the characteristic distance between consecutive axles. The main conclusions derived from the investigation are: The wheel-rail contact forces undergo oscillations during the passage of the axles over the bridge. During resonance, these oscillations are more severe for the rear wheels than for the front ones. If denotes the span of a simply supported bridge, and the characteristic distance between consecutive groups of loads, the lower the value of , the greater the oscillations of the contact forces at resonance. For or greater, no likelihood of loss of wheel-rail contact has been detected. The ratio between the frequency of the primary suspension of the vehicle and the fundamental frequency of the bridge is denoted by (frequency ratio), and the ratio of the semi-sprung mass of the vehicle (mass of the bogie) and the total mass of the bridge is denoted by (mass ratio). For any given frequency ratio, the greater the mass ratio, the greater the oscillations of the contact forces at resonance. The oscillations of the contact forces at resonance, and therefore the likelihood of loss of wheel-rail contact, present a minimum for approximately between 0.5 and 1. For lower or higher values of the frequency ratio the oscillations of the contact forces increase. Neglecting the possible effects of torsional vibrations, the metal or composite bridges with a low linear mass have been found to be the ones where the contact forces may suffer the most severe oscillations. If single-track, simply supported, composite or metal bridges were used in high-speed lines, and damping ratios below 1% were expected, the minimum contact forces at resonance could drop to dangerous values. Nevertheless, this kind of structures is very unusual in modern high-speed railway lines.

ABSTRACT Aerodynamic design of trains influences several aspects of high-speed trains performance in a very significant level. In this situation, considering also that new aerodynamic problems have arisen due to the increase of the cruise speed and lightness of the vehicle, it is evident the necessity of proposing an optimization study concerning the train aerodynamics. Thus, the aerodynamic optimization of the nose shape of a high-speed train is presented in this thesis. This optimization is based on advanced optimization methods. Among these methods, genetic algorithms and the adjoint method have been selected. A theoretical description of their bases, the characteristics and the implementation of each method is detailed in this thesis. This introduction permits understanding the causes of their selection, and the advantages and drawbacks of their application. The genetic algorithms requirethe geometrical parameterization of any optimal candidate and the generation of a metamodel or surrogate model that complete the optimization process. These points are addressed with a special attention in the first block of the thesis, focused on the methodology considered in this study. The second block is referred to the use of these methods with the purpose of optimizing the aerodynamic performance of a high-speed train in several scenarios. These scenarios englobe the most representative operating conditions of high-speed trains, and also some of the most exigent train aerodynamic problems: front wind and cross-wind situations in open air, and the entrance of a high-speed train in a tunnel. The genetic algorithms and the adjoint method have been applied in the minimization of the aerodynamic drag on the train with front wind in open air. The comparison of these methods allows to evaluate the methdology and computational cost of each one, as well as the resulting minimization of the aerodynamic drag. Simplicity and robustness, the straightforward realization of a multi-objective optimization, and the capability of searching a global optimum are the main attributes of genetic algorithm. However, the requirement of geometrically parameterize any optimal candidate is a significant drawback that is avoided with the use of the adjoint method. This independence of the number of design variables leads to a relevant reduction of the pre-processing and computational cost. Considering the cross-wind stability, both methods are used again for the minimization of the side force. In this case, a simplification of the geometric parameterization of the train nose is adopted, what dramatically reduces the computational cost of the optimization process. Nevertheless, some of the most important geometrical characteristics are still described with this simplified parameterization. This analysis identifies and quantifies the influence of each design variable on the side force on the train. It is observed that the A-pillar roundness is the most demanding design parameter, with a more important effect than the nose length or the train cross-section area. Finally, a third scenario is considered for the validation of these methods in the aerodynamic optimization of a high-speed train. The entrance of a train in a tunnel is one of the most exigent train aerodynamic problems. The aerodynamic consequences of high-speed trains running in a tunnel are basically resumed in two correlated phenomena, the generation of pressure waves and an increase in aerodynamic drag. This multi-objective optimization problem is solved with genetic algorithms. The result is a Pareto front where a set of optimal solutions that minimize both objectives.

This article deals with the effect of leading edge imperfections on the aerodynamic characteristics of a NACA 632-215 laminar aerofoil at low Reynolds numbers. Wind tunnel tests have been performed at different Reynolds numbers and angles of attack and global aerodynamic loads were measured. To perform these tests, a NACA 632-215 aerofoil was built up in two halves (corresponding to the upper side and to the lower side), the leading edge imperfection here considered being a slight displacement of half aerofoil with respect to the other. From experimental results, a quantitative measure of the influence of the leading edge displacement on the degradation of the aerofoil aerodynamic performances has been obtained. This allows the establishment of a criterion for an acceptance limit for this kind of imperfection

The main focus of this paper is on hydrodynamic modelling of a semisubmersible platform (which can support a 1.5MW wind turbine and is composed by three buoyant columns connected by bracings) with especial emphasis on the estimation of the wave drift components and their effects on the design of the mooring system. Indeed, with natural periods of drift around 60 seconds, accurate computation of the low-frequency second-order components is not a straightforward task. As methods usually adopted when dealing with the slow-drifts of deep-water moored systems, such as Newman?s approximation, have their errors increased by the relatively low resonant periods, and as the effects of depth cannot be ignored, the wave diffraction analysis must be based on full Quadratic Transfer Functions (QTF) computations. A discussion on the numerical aspects of performing such computations is presented, making use of the second-order module available with the seakeeping software WAMIT®. Finally, the paper also provides a preliminary verification of the accuracy of the numerical predictions based on the results obtained in a series of model tests with the structure fixed in bichromatic waves.

A genetic algorithm (GA) is employed for the multi-objective shape optimization of the nose of a high-speed train. Aerodynamic problems observed at high speeds become still more relevant when traveling along a tunnel. The objective is to minimize both the aerodynamic drag and the amplitude of the pressure gradient of the compression wave when a train enters a tunnel. The main drawback of GA is the large number of evaluations need in the optimization process. Metamodels-based optimization is considered to overcome such problem. As a result, an explicit relationship between pressure gradient and geometrical parameters is obtained.

The effect of cup anemometer shape parameters, such as the cups’ shape, their size, and their center rotation radius, was experimentally analyzed. This analysis was based on both the calibration constants of the transfer function and the most important harmonic termof the rotor’smovement, which due to the cup anemometer design is the third one. This harmonic analysis represents a new approach to study cup anemometer performances. The results clearly showed a good correlation between the average rotational speed of the anemometer’s rotor and the mentioned third harmonic term of its movement.

The yawing moment acting on the box-girder deck of reinforced concrete bridges constructed using the balanced cantilever method during the erection stage has been experimentally analyzed by testing different types of bridge cross-sections. Experimental results show that the yawing moment coefficient decreases as the bridge decks become streamlined, and that the yawing moment coefficient reaches a maximum when the bridge deck length is nearly twice the deck width.

ABSTRACT The aim of this thesis is to analyze the effects of airfoil trailing edges thickness when this is thicker than the airfoil nominal. Several factors may lead to an airfoil trailing edge being thicker than the nominal airfoil, and this may affect various aerodynamic parameters. This study has focus on its influence on the airfoil’s aerodynamic lift, drag and, particularly on the aerodynamic efficiency of the airfoil, that is, the relationship between the aerodynamic lift and drag. It has also been studied how this fact may alter some other aerodynamic aspects of airfoils, such as stall, angle of attack of maximum lift, angle of maximum efficiency, aerodynamic moment coefficient and aerodynamic center position. These imperfections in the trailing edge may appear in some manufacturing processes of certain aerodynamic elements, such as unmanned aircraft wings or wind turbine blades. This phenomenon has not been deeply analyzed in the literature, although several authors have discussed its influence on airfoil with truncated trailing edge, or airfoils with thickened end, used in other applications. Various types of airfoils have been analyzed, laminar and non-laminar, symmetric and curved airfoils, and airfoils with different thickness, in order to compare the degree of influence of the phenomenon studied on each airfoil type and thus, to estimate the degree of sensitivity to the anomaly geometry. The study was carried out experimentally using a test chamber designed specifically for this purpose, as well as an electronic balance to measure the forces and moments on the airfoil, and a pressure scanner to measure distribution of pressures in certain cases. It has also been investigated the behavior of airfoils with trailing edge thicker than the nominal, but rounded instead of blunt, in order to analyze the effectiveness of the trailing edge rounding, which is one of the methods that can be used to mitigate this phenomenon. Moreover, as the behavior of the airfoil is highly dependent on the Reynolds number, the study has been focused on the analysis of the behavior at low Reynolds numbers due to recent use of low Reynolds numbers airfoils in a wide range of applications, from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to low power wind turbine blades, or even due to their potential use in aircraft designed to fly in low density atmospheres as the one existing in Mars. The main purpose of this research is to establish a set of criteria for quantifying the influence that a thicker-than–nominal-trailing edge has in the degradation of maximum aerodynamic efficiency, aiming at establishing the acceptance limits for these pieces when they are manufactured, according to the type of airfoil used. Based on the results obtained from the analysis of the cases under study it can be concluded that increasing the thickness of the trailing edge, within the range of study, increases aerodynamic lift, as well as maximum lift, but the aerodynamic drag increases in a higher proportion, and consequently there is a reduction of aerodynamic efficiency, particularly, of its maximum value. On the other hand, rounding the trailing edge of the airfoil slightly helps to reduce this effect.

This paper presents the experimental study developed on a prismatic beam with H section, sometimes used in bridges as suspenders, vertical bars or decks. The purpose of this study is to understand the physical behavior of the air around this type of section, in order to reduce the aerodynamic loads, the onset speed of galloping and even to avoid it. To achieve this, a study of the influence of all geometric parameters that define the section has been developed. Previously, the most interesting configurations have been selected using a smoke flow visualization technique in the wind-tunnel, then the corresponding static aerodynamic loads were measured, completed with dynamic tests and, finally, the parameters governing the phenomenon of galloping determined.
