Two tridentate Schiff bases, HL1(6-amino-3-methyl-1-phenyl-4-azahex-2-en-1-one), and HL2 (6-atnino-3,6-dimethyl-1-phenyl-4-azahex-2-en-1-one) on reaction with Cu(II) perchlorate in the presence of triethyl amine yielded two new trinuclear copper(II) complexes, [(CuL1)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(2) (1) and [(CuL2)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(2) center dot 0.75H(2)O (2), whereas another tridentate ligand HL3 (7-amino-3-methyl-1-phenyl-4-azahept-2-en-1-one) underwent hydrolysis under the same reaction conditions to result in the formation of a mononuclear complex, [Cu(bn)(pn)ClO4] (3) [where bn = 1-benzoylacetonate and pn = 1,3-propanediamine]. All three complexes have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. For both 1 and 2 the cationic part is trinuclear with a [Cu3OH] core held by three carbonyl oxygen bridges between each pair of copper(II) atoms. The structure of 3 is a monomer with a chelating 1,3-propanediamine and a benzoyl acetone moiety. Magnetic measurements of I and 2 have been performed in the 2-300 K temperature range. The experimental data could be satisfactorily reproduced by using an isotropic exchange model, H = -J(S1S2 + S2S3 + S1S3), yielding as best fit parameters: J = -25.6 cm(-1), g = 2.21 for 1 and J = 11.2 cm(-1), g = 2.10 for 2. The EPR spectra at low temperature could be indicative of spin frustration in complex 1. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The night-time atmospheric chemistry of the biogenic volatile organic compounds (Z)-hex-4-en-1-ol, (Z)-hex-3-en-1-ol ('leaf alcohol'), (E)-hex-3-en-1-ol, (Z)-hex-2-en-1-ol and (E)-hex-2-en-1-ol, has been studied at room temperature. Rate coefficients for reactions of the nitrate radical (NO3) with these stress-induced plant emissions were measured using the discharge-flow technique. We employed off-axis continuous-wave cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy (CEAS) for the detection of NO3, which enabled us to work in excess of the hexenol compounds over NO3. The rate coefficients determined were (2.93 +/- 0.58) x 10(-13) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1), (2.67 +/- 0.42) x 10(-13) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1), (4.43 +/- 0.91) x 10(-13) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1), (1.56 +/- 0.24) x 10(-13) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1), and (1.30 +/- 0.24) x 10(-13) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) for (Z)-hex-4-en-1-ol, (Z)-hex-3en-1-ol, (E)-hex-3-en-1-ol, (Z)-hex-2-en-1-ol and (E)-hex-2-en-1-ol. The rate coefficient for the reaction of NO3 with (Z)-hex-3-en-1-ol agrees with the single published determination of the rate coefficient using a relative method. The other rate coefficients have not been measured before and are compared to estimated values. Relative-rate studies were also performed, but required modification of the standard technique because N2O5 (used as the source of NO3) itself reacts with the hexenols. We used varying excesses of NO2 to determine simultaneously rate coefficients for reactions of NO3 and N2O5 with (E)-hex-3-en-1-ol of (5.2 +/- 1.8) x 10(-13) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) and (3.1 +/- 2.3) x 10(-18) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1). Our new determinations suggest atmospheric lifetimes with respect to NO3-initiated oxidation of roughly 1-4 h for the hexenols, comparable with lifetimes estimated for the atmospheric degradation by OH and shorter lifetimes than for attack by O-3. Recent measurements of [N2O5] suggest that the gas-phase reactions of N2O5 with unsaturated alcohols will not be of importance under usual atmospheric conditions, but they certainly can be in laboratory systems when determining rate coefficients.

The dinuclear complex [(tpy)Ru-II(PCP-PCP)Ru-II(tPY)]Cl-2 (bridging PCP-PCP = 3,3',5,5'-tetrakis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)biphenyl, [C6H2(CH2PPh2)(2)-3,5](2)(2-)) was prepared via a transcyclometalation reaction of the bis-pincer ligand [PC(H)P-PC(H)P] and the Ru(II) precursor [Ru(NCN)(tpy)]Cl (NCN = [C6H3(CH2NMe2)(2)-2,6](-)) followed by a reaction with 2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine (tpy). Electrochemical and spectroscopic properties of [(tpy)Ru-II(PCP-PCP)Ru-II(tPY)]Cl-2 are compared with those of the closely related [(tpy)Ru-II(NCN-NCN)Ru-II(tpy)](PF6)(2) (NCN-NCN = [C6H2(CH2- NMe2)(2)-3,5](2)(2-)) obtained by two-electron reduction of [(tpy)Ru-III(NCN-NCN)Ru-III(tpy)](PF6)(4). The molecular structure of the latter complex has been determined by single-crystal X-ray structure determination. One-electron reduction of [(tpy)Ru-III(NCN-NCN)Ru-III(tpy)](PF6)(4) and one-electron oxidation of [(tpy)Ru-II(PCP-PCP)RUII(tpy)]Cl-2 yielded the mixed-valence species [(tpy)Ru-III(NCN-NCN)RUII(tpy)](3+) and [(tpy)Ru-III(PCP-PCP)RUII(tpy)](3+), respectively. The comproportionation equilibrium constants K-c (900 and 748 for [(tpy)Ru-III(NCN-NCN)Ru-III(tpy)](4+) and [(tpy)Ru-II(PCP-PCP)RUII(tpy)](2+), respectively) determined from cyclic voltammetric data reveal comparable stability of the [Ru-III-Ru-II] state of both complexes. Spectroelectrochemical measurements and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy were employed to further characterize the different redox states with special focus on the mixed-valence species and their NIR bands. Analysis of these bands in the framework of Hush theory indicates that the mixed-valence complexes [(tpy)Ru-III(PCP-PCP)RUII(tpy)](3+) and [(tpy)Ru-III(NCN-NCN)RUII(tpy)](3+) belong to strongly coupled borderline Class II/Class III and intrinsically coupled Class III systems, respectively. Preliminary DFT calculations suggest that extensive delocalization of the spin density over the metal centers and the bridging ligand exists. TD-DFT calculations then suggested a substantial MLCT character of the NIR electronic transitions. The results obtained in this study point to a decreased metal-metal electronic interaction accommodated by the double-cyclometalated bis-pincer bridge when strong sigma-donor NMe2 groups are replaced by weak sigma-donor, pi-acceptor PPh2 groups

The lowest allowed electronic transition of fac-[Re(Cl)(CO)(3)(bopy)(2)] (bopy = 4-benzoylpyridine) has a Re --> bopy MLCT character, as revealed by UV-vis and stationary resonance Raman spectroscopy. Accordingly, the lowest-lying, long-lived, excited state is Re --> bopy (MLCT)-M-3. Electronic depopulation of the Re(CO)(3) unit and population of a bopy pi* orbital upon excitation are evident by the upward shift of v(Cequivalent toO) vibrations and a downward shift of the ketone v(C=O) vibration, respectively, seen in picosecond time-resolved IR spectra. Moreover, reduction of a single bopy ligand in the (MLCT)-M-3 excited state is indicated by time-resolved visible and resonance Raman (TR3) spectra that show features typical of bopy(.-). In contrast, the lowest allowed electronic transition and lowest-lying excited state of a new complex fac-[Re(bopy)(CO)(3)(bpy)](+) (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) have been identified as Re --> bpy MLCT with no involvement of the bopy ligand, despite the fact that the first reduction of this complex is bopy-localized, as was proven spectroelectrochemically. This is a rare case in which the localizations of the lowest MLCT excitation and the first reduction are different. (MLCT)-M-3 excited states of both fac-[Re(Cl)(CO)(3)(bopy)(2)] and fac-[Re(bopy)(CO)(3)(bpy)](+) are initially formed vibrationally hot. Their relaxation is manifested by picosecond dynamic shifts of v(Cequivalent toO) IR bands. The X-ray structure of fac-[Re(bopy)(CO)(3)(bpy)](PF6CH3CN)-C-. has been determined.

The complex [(C(NH2)3)3ZrOH(CO3)3·H2O]2 (A) has been shown by means of a single crystal X-ray diffraction study to contain [C(NH2)3]+ cations and dimeric anions of formulation [(ZrOH(CO3)3)2]6−. The anion is centrosymmetric with each metal being bonded to two bridging OH groups and three chelating CO2−3 ions. The Zr atoms are thus eight coordinate with a dodecahedral environments. The ZrO distances formed by the bridgng OH groups are shorter than those formed through zirconiu carbonate interactions. The non-bonded Zr…Zr distance is 3.47(2) Å. An infrared spectroscopic investigation of A provides data which support the findings of the crystallographic study. Likewise the complex Na6(ZrOH(CO2O4)3)2·7H2O (B) contains the anion [(ZrOH(C2O4)3)2]6−. This anion is structurally related to the anion in A as each Zr atom has an eight-coordinate dodecahedral environment being bonded to two bridging OH groups and three chelating oxalate ligands, but has no imposed crysallographic symmetry. The Zr…Zr non-bonded distance is 3.50(1) Å. The OZrO bridge angles are 69.7(4)° and A and 67.4(3)° in B.

The addition of the atropisomeric racemic sulfur compound 4,4′-biphenanthrene-3,3′-dithiol (H2 biphes) to a dichloromethane solution of [{M(μ-OMe)(cod)}2] (M = Rh, Ir, cod = cycloocta-1,5-diene) afforded the dithiolate-bridged complexes [{Rh2(μ-biphes)(cod)2}n] (n = 2 5 or n = 1 6) and [{Ir2(μ-biphes)(cod)2}n]·nCH2Cl27. When 1,1′-binaphthalene-2,2′-dithiol (H2 binas) reacted with [{Ir(μ-OMe)(cod)}2], complex [Ir2(μ-binas)(cod)2] 8 was obtained. Complexes 5 and 6 reacted with carbon monoxide to give the dinuclear tetracarbonyl complex [Rh2(μ-biphes)(CO)4] 9. The reaction of 9 with PR3 provided the mixed-ligand complexes [{Rh2(μ-biphes)(CO)2(PR3)2}2] · xCH2Cl2 (R = Ph, x = 2 10, C6H11, x = 1 11) and [{Rh2(μ-biphes)(CO)3(PR3)}2] · CH2Cl212 (R = OC6H4But-o). The crystal structure of 6 was determined by X-ray diffraction. Reaction of the dithioether ligand Me2biphes with [Rh(cod)2]ClO4 in CH2Cl2 solution afforded the cationic complex [Rh(cod)(Me2biphes)]ClO4 · CH2Cl213. Asymmetric hydroformylation of styrene was performed using the complexes described. The extent of aldehyde conversion ranges from 53 to 100%, with selectivities towards branched aldehydes in the range 51 to 96%. The enantioselectivities were quite low and did not exceed 20%.

Two new Mn(III) complexes of formulas [MnL1(N-3)(OMe)](2) (1) and [MnL2(N-3)(2)](n) (2) have been synthesized by using two tridentate NNO-donor Schiff base ligands HL1{(2-[(3-methylaminoethylimino)-methyl]-phenol)} and HL2 {(2-[1-(2-dimethylaminoethylimino)methyl]-phenol)}, respectively. Substitution of the H atom on the secondary amine group of the N-methyldiamine fragment of the Schiff base by a methyl group leads to a drastic structural change from a methoxido-bridged dimer (1) to a single mu(1,3)-azido-bridged 1D helical polymer (2). Both complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray structural analyses and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. The magnetic properties of compound I show the presence of weak ferromagnetic exchange interactions mediated by double methoiddo bridges (J = 0.95 cm(-1)). Compound 2 shows the existence of a weak antiferromangetic coupling along the chain (J = -8.5 cm(-1)) through the single mu(1,3)-N-3 bridge with a spin canting that leads to a long-range antiferromagnetic order at T-c approximate to 9.3 K and a canting leading to a weak ferromagnetic long-range order at T-c approximate to 8.5 K. It also exibits metamagnetic behavior at low temperatures with a critical field of ca.1.2 T due to the weak antiferromagnetic interchain interactions that appear in the canted ordered phase.

Group 6 complexes of the type [M(CO)4(bpy)] (M=Cr, Mo, W) are capable of behaving as electrochemical catalysts for the reduction of CO2 at potentials less negative than those for the reduction of the radical anions [M(CO)4(bpy)].−. Cyclic voltammetric, chronoamperometric and UV/Vis/IR spectro-electrochemical data reveal that five-coordinate [M(CO)3(bpy)]2− are the active catalysts. The catalytic conversion is significantly more efficient in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) compared to tetrahydrofuran, which may reflect easier CO dissociation from 1e−-reduced [M(CO)4(bpy)].− in the former solvent, followed by second electron transfer. The catalytic cycle may also involve [M(CO)4(H-bpy)]− formed by protonation of [M(CO)3(bpy)]2−, especially in NMP. The strongly enhanced catalysis using an Au working electrode is remarkable, suggesting that surface interactions may play an important role, too.

An efficient and rapid synthesis of 1-acetyl-1H-indol-3-yl acetate 1 and its derivatives 7 via the microwave-assisted cyclisation and decarboxylation of 2-[(carboxymethyl)amino]benzoic acids 5 is described. The latter were left to react with acetic anhydride using triethylamine as the base and were subjected to microwave irradiation for 1 minute, at 80 °C with initial power of 300 W. The target 1-acetyl-1H-indol-3-yl acetate 1 and derivatives 7 were isolated in 34-71% yield. In particular, synthesis of 1-acetyl-6-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-indol-3-yl acetate 7f and 1-acetyl-3-methyl-1H-indol-3-yl acetate 7h is reported for the first time.

Three of the species, Cobania picea, Roweria virescens, and Serracutisoma proximum, secrete a mixture of 2,3-dimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone and 2-ethyl-3methyl-1,4,4-benzoquinone. The secretions produced,by the Other two species Iporangaia pustulosa and Neosadocus maximus, contain 1-hepten-3-one, 5-methyl-1-hexen-3-one, and 1-(6-butyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran-2-yl)pentanone. (1)as major components, as well as,2,3-dimethyl-1.,4-benzoquinone and 2-ethyl-3 methyl-1,4-benzoquinone as minor, constituents. The. dihydropyran 1-(6-butyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran-2-yl)pentanone (1) is a new natural product, composed of two 1-hepten-3-one, subunits formally linked in a hetero-Diels-Alder reaction. The natural product was proven to be racemic, and its biogenetic origin is discussed.

Complex fac-[RuCl(3)(NO)(P-N)] (1) was synthesized from the reaction of [RuCl(3)(H(2)O)(2)(NO)] and the P-N ligand, o-[(N,N-dimethylamino)phenyl]diphenylphosphine) in refluxing methanol solution, while complex mer,trans-[RuCl(3)(NO)(P-N)] (2) was obtained by photochemical isomerization of (1) in dichloromethane solution. The third possible isomer mer, cis-[RuCl(3)(NO)(P-N)] (3) was never observed in direct synthesis as well as in photo-or thermal-isomerization reactions. When refluxing a methanol solution of complex (2) a thermally induced isomerization occurs and complex (1) is regenerated. The complexes were characterized by NMR ((31)P{(1)H}, (15)N{1H} and 1H), cyclic voltammetry, FTIR, UV-Vis, elemental analysis and X-ray diffraction structure determination. The (31)P{(1)H} NMR revealed the presence of singlet at 35.6 for (1) and 28.3 ppm for (2). The (1)H NMR spectrum for (1) presented two singlets for the methyl hydrogens at 3.81 and 3.13 ppm, while for (2) was observed only one singlet at 3.29 ppm. FTIR Ru-NO stretching in KBr pellets or CH(2)Cl(2) solution presented 1866 and 1872 cm(-1) for (1) and 1841 and 1860 cm(-1) for (2). Electrochemical analysis revealed a irreversible reduction attributed to Ru(II)-NO(+) -> Ru(II)-NO(0) at -0.81 V and -0.62 V, for (1) and (2), respectively; the process Ru(II) -> Ru(III), as expected, is only observed around 2.0 V, for both complexes. Studies were conducted using (15)NO and both complexes were isolated with (15)N-enriched NO. Upon irradiation, the complex fac-[RuCl(3)(NO)(P-N)] (1) does not exchange (14)NO by (15)NO, while complex mer, trans-[RuCl(3)(NO)(P-N)] (2) does. Complex mer, trans-[RuCl(3)((15)NO)(P-N)] (2`) was obtained by direct reaction of mer, trans-[RuCl(3)(NO)(P-N)] (2) with (15)NO and the complex fac-[RuCl(3)((15)NO)(P-N)] (1`) was obtained by thermal-isomerization of mer, trans-[RuCl(3)((15)NO)(P-N)] (2`). DFT calculation on isomer energies, electronic spectra and electronic configuration were done. For complex (1) the HOMO orbital is essentially Ru (46.6%) and Cl (42.5%), for (2) Ru (57.4%) and Cl (39.0%) while LUMO orbital for (1) is based on NO (52.9%) and is less extent on Ru (38.4%), for (2) NO (58.2%) and Ru (31.5%). Four new ternary complexes of copper(I) with thiosaccharin and phosphanes were prepared. The reaction of [Cu(4)(tsac)(4)(CH(3)CN)(2)] (1) (tsac: thiosaccharinate anion) with PPh(3) in molar ratios Cu(I)/PPh(3) 1:075 and 1:2 gave the complexes [Cu(4)(tsac)(4)(PPh(3))(3)] center dot CH(3)CN (2) and Cu(tsac)(PPh(3))(2) (3), respectively. The reaction of 1 with Ph(2)PCH(2)PPh(2) (dppm) in molar ratios Cu(I)/dppm 2:1 and 1:1 gave the complexes [Cu(4) (tsac)(4)(dppm)(2)] center dot 2CH(2)Cl(2) (4) and [Cu(2)(tsac)(2)(dppm)(2)] center dot CH(2)Cl(2) (5), respectively. All the compounds have been characterized by spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic methods. Complex 2 presents a tetra-nuclear arrangement with three metal centers in distorted tetrahedral S(2)NP environments, the fourth one with the Cu(I) ion in a distorted trigonal S(2)N coordination sphere, and the tsac anions acting as six electron donor ligands in mu(3)-S(2)N coordination forms. Complex 3 shows mononuclear molecular units with copper(I) in a distorted trigonal planar coordination sphere, built with the exocyclic S atom of a mono-coordinated thiosaccharinate anion and two P-atoms of triphenylphosphane molecules. With dppm as secondary ligand the structures of the complexes depends strongly on the stoicheometry of the preparation reaction. Complex 4 has a centrosymmetric structure. Two triply bridged Cu(2)(tsac)(2)(dppm) units are joined together by the exocyclic S-atoms of two tsac anions acting effectively as bridging tridentate ligands. Complex 5 is conformed by asymmetric dinuclear moieties where the two dppm and one tsac ligands bridge two Cu(I) atoms and the second tsac anion binds one of the metal centers through its exocyclic S-atom. 2-Benzoylpyridine-phenylhydrazone (H2BzPh), 2-benzoylpyridine-para-chloro-phenylhydrazone (H2BzpClPh), and 2-benzoylpyridine-para-nitro-phenyl (H2BzpNO(2)Ph) hydrazone were obtained and fully characterized, as well as their zinc(II) complexes [Zn(H2BzPh)Cl(2)] (1), [Zn(H2BzClPh)Cl(2)] (2) and [Zn(H2BzpNO(2)Ph)Cl(2)] (3). During the syntheses of complex 1 a second product crystallized, which was characterized as [Zn(2BzPh)(2)] (1a). Upon re-crystallization in 1: 9 DMSO: acetone conversion of 2 into [Zn(H2BzpClPh)Cl2] center dot H(2)O (2a) and of 3 into [Zn(2BzpNO(2)Ph)Cl(DMSO)] (3a) occurred. The crystal structures of 1a, 2a and 3a were determined. In 1a the two nearly perpendicular H2BzPh ligands give rise to a distorted octahedral environment around the metal. The 5-fold coordination around the metal is completed with two chloride ions in 2a and with one chloride and one oxygen atom from DMSO in 3a. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The new trinuclear gadolinium complex [Gd(3)L(2)(NO(3))(2)(H(2)O)(4)]NO(3)center dot 8H(2)O (1) with the unsymmetrical ligand 2-[N-bis-(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl]-4-methyl-6-[N-bis(2-hydroxy-2-oxoethyl)aminomethyl] phenol (H(3)L) was synthesized and characterized. The new ligand H(3)L was obtained in good yield. Complex I crystallizes in an orthorhombic cell, space group Pcab. Kinetic studies show that complex 1 is highly active in the hydrolysis of the substrate 2,4-bis(dinitrophenyl)phosphate (K(m) = 4.09 mM, V(max) = 2.68 x 10(-2) mM s(-1), and k(cat) = V(max)/[1] = 0.67 s(-1)). Through a potentiometric study and determination of the kinetic behavior of 1 in acetonitrile/water solution, the species present in solution could be identified, and a trinuclear monohydroxo species appears to be the most prominent catalyst under mild conditions. Complex 1 displays high efficiency in DNA hydrolytic cleavage, and complete kinetic studies were carried out (K(m) = 4.57 x 10(-4) M, K(cat)` = 3.42 h(-1), and k(cat)`/K(m) = 7.48 x 10(3) M(-1) h(-1)). Studies with a radical scavenger (dimethyl sulfoxide, DMSO) showed that it did not inhibit the activity, indicating the hydrolytic action of 1 in the cleavage of DNA, and studies on the incubation of distamycin with plasmid DNA suggest that 1 is regio-specific, interacting with the minor groove of DNA.

Diacetyl, like other alpha-dicarbonyl compounds, is reportedly cytotoxic and genotoxic. A food and cigarette contaminant, it is related with alcohol hepatotoxicity and lung disease. Peroxynitrite is a potent oxidant formed in vivo by the diffusion-controlled reaction of the superoxide radical anion with nitric oxide, which is able to form adducts with carbon dioxide and carbonyl compounds. Here, we investigate the nucleophilic addition of peroxynitrite to diacetyl forming acetyl radicals, whose reaction with molecular oxygen leads to acetate. Peroxynitrite is shown to react with diacetyl in phosphate buffer (bell-shaped pH profile with maximum at 7.2) at a very high rate constant (k(2) = 1.0 X 10(4) M-1 s(-1)) when compared with monocarbonyl substrates (k(2) < 10(3) M-1 s(-1)). Phosphate ions (100-500 MM) do not affect the rate of spontaneous peroxynitrite decay, but the H2PO4- anion catalyzes the nucleophilic addition of the peroxynitrite anion to diacetyl. The intermediacy of acetyl radicals is suggested by a three-line spectrum (a(N) = a(H) = 0.83 mT) obtained by EPR spin trapping of the reaction mixture with 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane. The peroxynitrite reaction is accompanied by concentration-dependent oxygen uptake. Stoichiometric amounts of acetate from millimolar amounts of peroxynitrite and diacetyl were obtained under nonlimiting conditions of dissolved oxygen. In the presence of either L-histidine or 2`-deoxyguanosine, the peroxynitrite/diacetyl system afforded the corresponding acetylated molecules identified by HPLC-MS"". These studies provide evidence that the peroxynitrite/diacetyl reaction yields acetyl radicals and raise the hypothesis that protein and DNA nonenzymatic acetylation may occur in cells and be implicated in aging and metabolic disorders in which oxygen and nitrogen reactive species are putatively involved.
