The present work investigates some consequences that arise from the use of a modifed lagrangean for the eletromagnetic feld in two diferent contexts: a spatially homogeneous and isotropic universe whose dynamics is driven by a magnetic feld plus a cosmological parameter A, and the problem of a static and charged point mass (charged black hole). In the cosmological case, three diferent general solutions were derived. The first, with a null cosmological parameter A, generalizes a particular solution obtained by Novello et al [gr-qc/9806076]. The second one admits a constant A and the third one allows A to be a time-dependent parameter that sustains a constant magnetic feld. The first two solutions are non-singular and exhibit in ationary periods. The third case studied shows an in ationary dynamics except for a short period of time. As for the problem of a charged point mass, the solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations are obtained and compared with the standard Reissner-Nordstrom solution. Contrary to what happens in the cosmological case, the physical singularity is not removed

In this paper an alternative method based on artificial neural networks is presented to determine harmonic components in the load current of a single-phase electric power system with nonlinear loads, whose parameters can vary so much in reason of the loads characteristic behaviors as because of the human intervention. The first six components in the load current are determined using the information contained in the time-varying waveforms. The effectiveness of this method is verified by using it in a single-phase active power filter with selective compensation of the current drained by an AC controller. The proposed method is compared with the fast Fourier transform.

Quinze pacientes com síndrome de Lennox-Gastaut secundária foram submetidos a exames clínicos e eletrencefalográficos mensais por períodos de tempo que variaram de 1 a 9 anos. Os exames eletrencefalográficos foram realizados durante sono induzido por barbitúrico. Doze pacientes apresentaram atividade epiléptica focal. No presente trabalho descrevemos a localização, morfologia e freqüência dos paroxismos epilépticos focais.

O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar o efeito da seleção das cargas e do modelo utilizado para a determinação da PC no ergômetro de braço. Participaram do estudo oito voluntários do sexo masculino, que praticavam atividade física regularmente e eram aparentemente saudáveis. Os sujeitos realizaram quatro testes com cargas constantes mantidas até a exaustão voluntária no ergômetro de braço UBE 2462-Cybex. As cargas foram individualmente selecionadas para induzir a fadiga entre 1 e 15 minutos. Para cada sujeito, a determinação da PC foi realizada através de dois modelos lineares: potência-1/tempo e trabalho-tempo. em cada um dos modelos, foram utilizadas todas as potências (1), as três maiores (2) e as três menores (3). As PC encontradas no modelo potência-1/tempo e trabalho-tempo para a condição 3 (177,5 + 29,5; 173,9 + 33,3, respectivamente) foram significantemente menores do que as da condição 2 (190,5 + 23,2; 183,4 + 22,3, respectivamente), não existindo diferenças destas com as da condição 1 (184,2 + 25,4; 176,4 + 28,8, respectivamente). As PC determinadas no modelo potência-1/tempo para as condições 1 e 2 foram significantemente maiores do que as determinadas no modelo trabalho-tempo, não existindo diferenças para a condição 3. Pode-se concluir que as cargas selecionadas e o modelo utilizado interferem na determinação da PC encontrada no ergômetro de braço, podendo interferir no tempo de exaustão durante o exercício submáximo realizado em cargas relativas a este índice.

We study the macroscopic quantum tunneling, self-trapping phenomena in two weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates with periodically time-varying atomic scattering length.The resonances in the oscillations of the atomic populations are investigated. We consider oscillations in the cases of macroscopic quantum tunneling and the self-trapping regimes. The existence of chaotic oscillations in the relative atomic population due to overlaps between nonlinear resonances is showed. We derive the whisker-type map for the problem and obtain the estimate for the critical amplitude of modulations leading to chaos. The diffusion coefficient for motion in the stochastic layer near separatrix is calculated. The analysis of the oscillations in the rapidly varying case shows the possibility of stabilization of the unstable pi-mode regime. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier B.V. B.V. PACS: 03.75.Fi; 05.30.Jp.

The solvation properties of model resin and peptide-resins measured in ca. 30 solvent systems correlated better with the sum of solvent electron acceptor (AN) and electron donor (DN) numbers, in 1:1 proportion, than with other solvent polarity parameters. The high sensitivity of the (AN+DN) term to detect differentiated solvation behaviors of peptide-resins, taken as model of heterogeneous and complex solutes, seems to be in agreement with the previously proposed two-parameter model, where the sum of the Lewis acidity and Lewis basicity characters of solvent are proposed for scaling solvent effect. Besides these physicochemical aspects regarding solute-solvent interactions, important implications of this study for the solid phase peptide synthesis were also observed. Each class of peptide-resin displayed a specific salvation profile that was dependent on the amount and the nature of the resin-bound peptide sequence. Plots of resin swelling versus solvent (AN+DN) values allowed the visualization of a maximum salvation region characteristic for each class of resin. This strategy facilitates the selection of solvent systems for optimal solvation conditions of peptide chains in every step of the entire synthesis cycle. Moreover, only the AN and DN concepts allow the understanding of rules for solvation/shrinking of peptide-resins when in homogeneous or in heterogeneous mixed solvents.

The exact solution for the full electronic Hamiltonian for a two-level dimer is obtained. The parameter constellation (20) is reparametrized via orthogonal Slater atomic orbitals, yielding a three-parameter model. In some practical problems, for instance in the control systems for the suppression of vibration in mechanical systems, the state-derivative signals are easier to obtain than the state signals. New necessary and sufficient linear matrix inequalities (LMI) conditions for the design of state-derivative feedback for multi-input (MI) linear systems are proposed. For multi-input/multi-output (MIMO) linear time-invariant or time-varying plants, with or without uncertainties in their parameters, the proposed methods can include in the LMI-based control designs the specifications of the decay rate, bounds on the output peak, and bounds on the state-derivative feedback matrix K. These design procedures allow new specifications and also, they consider a broader class of plants than the related results available in the literature. The LMIs, when feasible, can be efficiently solved using convex programming techniques. Practical applications illustrate the efficiency of the proposed methods.

Tin on the oxide form, alone or doped with others metals, has been extensively used as gas sensor, thus, this work reports on the preparation and kinetic parameters regarding the thermal decomposition of Sn(II)-ethylenediaminetetraacetate as precursor to SnO2. Thus, the acquaintance with the kinetic model regarding the thermal decomposition of the tin complex may leave the door open to foresee, whether it is possible to get thin film of SnO2 using Sn(II)-EDTA as precursor besides the influence of dopants added.The Sn(II)-EDTA soluble complex was prepared in aqueous medium by adding of tin(II) chloride acid solution to equimolar amount of ammonium salt from EDTA under N-2 atmosphere and temperature of 50degreesC arising the pH similar to 4. The compound was crystallized in ethanol at low-temperature and filtered to eliminate the chloride ions, obtaining the heptacoordinated chelate with the composition H2SnH2O(CH2N(CH2COO)(2))(2).0.5H(2)O.Results from TG, DTG and DSC curves under inert and oxidizing atmospheres indicate the presence of water coordinated to the metal and that the ethylenediamine fraction is thermally more stable than carboxylate groups. The final residue from thermal decomposition was the SnO2 characterized by X-ray as a tetragonal rutile phase.Applying the isoconversional Wall-Flynn-Ozawa method on the DSC curves, average activation energy: E-a = 183.7 +/- 12.7 and 218.9 +/- 2.1 kJ mol(-1), and pre-exponential factor: log A = 18.85 +/- 0.27 and 19.10 +/- 0.27 min(-1), at 95% confidence level, could be obtained, regarding the loss of coordinated water and thermal decomposition of the carboxylate groups, respectively. The E-a and logA also could be obtained applying isoconventional Wall-Flynn method on the TG curves.From E-a and log A values, Dollimore and Malek procedures could be applied suggesting R3 (contracting volume) and SB (two-parameter model) as the kinetic model to the loss of coordinated water (177-244degreesC) and thermal decomposition of the carboxylate groups (283-315degreesC), respectively. This paper presents a new non-destructive testing (NDT) for reinforced concrete structures, in order to identify the components of their reinforcement. A time varying electromagnetic field is generated close to the structure by electromagnetic devices specially designed for this purpose. The presence of ferromagnetic materials (the steel bars of the reinforcement) immersed in the concrete disturbs the magnetic field at the surface of the structure. These field alterations are detected by sensors coils placed on the concrete surface. Variations in position and cross section (the size) of steel bars immersed in concrete originate slightly different values for the induced voltages at the coils.. The values for the induced voltages were obtained in laboratory tests, and multi-layer perceptron artificial neural networks with Levemberg-Marquardt training algorithm were used to identify the location and size of the bar. Preliminary results can be considered very good.

A Maximum Principle is derived for a class of optimal control problems arising in midcourse guidance, in which certain controls are represented by measures and, the state trajectories are functions of bounded variation. The optimality conditions improves on previous optimality conditions by allowing nonsmooth data, measurable time dependence, and a possibly time varying constraint set for the conventional controls.

This paper presents two Variable Structure Controllers (VSC) for continuous-time switched plants. It is assumed that the state vector is available for feedback. The proposed control system provides a switching rule and also the variable structure control input. The design is based on Lyapunov-Metzler (LM) inequalities and also on Strictly Positive Real (SPR) systems stability results. The definition of Lyapunov-Metzler-SPR (LMS) systems and its direct application in the design of VSC for switched systems are introduced in this paper. Two examples illustrate the design of the proposed VSC, considering a plant given by a switched system with a switched-state control law and two linear time-invariant systems, that are not controllable and also can not be stabilized with state feedback. ©2008 IEEE.
