Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of three different high-intensity interval training (HIT) regimens on endurance performance in highly trained endurance athletes. Methods: Before, and after 2 and 4 wk of training, 38 cyclists and triathletes (mean +/- SD; age = 25 +/- 6 yr; mass = 75 +/- 7 kg; (V)over dot O-2peak = 64.5 +/- 5.2 mL.kg(-1).min(-1)) performed: 1) a progressive cycle test to measure peak oxygen consumption ((V)over dotO(2peak)) and peak aerobic power output (PPO), 2) a time to exhaustion test (T-max) at their (V)over dotO(2peak) power output (P-max), as well as 3) a 40-kin time-trial (TT40). Subjects were matched and assigned to one of four training groups (G(1), N = 8, 8 X 60% T-max P-max, 1:2 work:recovery ratio; G(2), N = 9, 8 X 60% T-max at P-max, recovery at 65% HRmax; G(3), N = 10, 12 X 30 s at 175% PPO, 4.5-min recovery; G(CON), N = 11). In addition to G(1) G(2), and G(3) performing HIT twice per week, all athletes maintained their regular low-intensity training throughout the experimental period. Results: All HIT groups improved TT40 performance (+4.4 to +5.8%) and PPO (+3.0 to +6.2%) significantly more than G(CON) (-0.9 to + 1.1 %; P < 0.05). Furthermore, G(1) (+5.4%) and G(2) (+8.1%) improved their (V)over dot O-2peak significantly more than G(CON) (+ 1.0%; P < 0.05). Conclusion: The present study has shown that when HIT incorporates P-max as the interval intensity and 60% of T-max as the interval duration, already highly trained cyclists can significantly improve their 40-km time trial performance. Moreover, the present data confirm prior research, in that repeated supramaximal HIT can significantly improve 40-km time trial performance.

In Australian universities the discipline of Geography has been the pace-setter in forging cross-disciplinary links to create multidisciplinary departments and schools, well ahead of other disciplines in humanities, social sciences and sciences, and also to a greater extent than in comparable overseas university systems. Details on all cross-disciplinary links and on immediate outcomes have been obtained by surveys of all heads of departments/schools with undergraduate Geography programs. These programs have traced their own distinctive trajectories, with ramifying links to cognate fields of enquiry, achieved through mergers, transfers, internal initiatives and, more recently, faculty-wide restructuring to create supradisciplinary schools. Geography's `exceptionalism' has proved short-lived. Disciplinary flux is now extending more widely within Australian universities, driven by a variety of internal and external forces, including: intellectual questioning and new ways of constituting knowledge; technological change and the information revolution; the growth of instrumentalism and credentialism, and managerialism and entre-preneurial imperatives; reinforced by a powerful budgetary squeeze. Geographers are proving highly adaptive in pursuit of cross-disciplinary connections, offering analytical tools and selected disciplinary insights useful to non-geographers. However, this may be at cost to undergraduate programs focussing on Geography's intellectual core. Whereas formerly Geography had high reproductive capacity but low instrumental value it may now be in a phase of enhanced utility but perilously low reproductive capacity.

This paper tests the explanatory capacities of different versions of new institutionalism by examining the Australian case of a general transition in central banking practice and monetary politics: namely, the increased emphasis on low inflation and central bank independence. Standard versions of rational choice institutionalism largely dominate the literature on the politics of central banking, but this approach (here termed RC1) fails to account for Australian empirics. RC1 has a tendency to establish actor preferences exogenously to the analysis; actors' motives are also assumed a priori; actor's preferences are depicted in relatively static, ahistorical terms. And there is the tendency, even a methodological requirement, to assume relatively simple motives and preference sets among actors, in part because of the game theoretic nature of RC1 reasoning. It is possible to build a more accurate rational choice model by re-specifying and essentially updating the context, incentives and choice sets that have driven rational choice in this case. Enter RC2. However, this move subtly introduces methodological shifts and new theoretical challenges. By contrast, historical institutionalism uses an inductive methodology. Compared with deduction, it is arguably better able to deal with complexity and nuance. It also utilises a dynamic, historical approach, and specifies (dynamically) endogenous preference formation by interpretive actors. Historical institutionalism is also able to more easily incorporate a wider set of key explanatory variables and incorporate wider social aggregates. Hence, it is argued that historical institutionalism is the preferred explanatory theory and methodology in this case.

The Test of Mouse Proficiency (TOMP) was developed to assist occupational therapists and education professionals assess computer mouse competency skills in children from preschool to upper primary (elementary) school age. The preliminary reliability and validity of TOMP are reported in this paper. Methods used to examine the internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and criterion- and construct-related validity of the test are elaborated. In the continuing process of test refinement, these preliminary studies support to varying degrees the reliability and validity of TOMP. Recommendations for further validation of the assessment are discussed along with indications for potential clinical application.

The rise of component-based software development has created an urgent need for effective application program interface (API) documentation. Experience has shown that it is hard to create precise and readable documentation. Prose documentation can provide a good overview but lacks precision. Formal methods offer precision but the resulting documentation is expensive to develop. Worse, few developers have the skill or inclination to read formal documentation. We present a pragmatic solution to the problem of API documentation. We augment the prose documentation with executable test cases, including expected outputs, and use the prose plus the test cases as the documentation. With appropriate tool support, the test cases are easy to develop and read. Such test cases constitute a completely formal, albeit partial, specification of input/output behavior. Equally important, consistency between code and documentation is demonstrated by running the test cases. This approach provides an attractive bridge between formal and informal documentation. We also present a tool that supports compact and readable test cases; and generation of test drivers and documentation, and illustrate the approach with detailed case studies. A stickiness testing device based on the probe tack test has been designed and tested. It was used to perform in situ characterization of drying hemispherical drops with an initial radius 3.5 mm. Tests were carried out in two drying temperatures, 63 and 95 degreesC. Moisture and temperature histories of the drying drops of fructose, honey, sucrose, maltodextrin and sucrose-maltodextrin mixtures were determined. The rates of moisture evaporation of the fructose solution was the fastest while those of the maltodextrin solution was the lowest. A profile reversal was observed when the temperature profiles of these materials were compared. Different modes of failure were observed during the stickiness tests. Pure fructose and honey solutions remained completely sticky and failed cohesively until the end of drying. Pure sucrose solution remained sticky and failed cohesively until complete crystallization occurred. The surface of the maltodextrin drops formed a skin shortly after the start of drying. It exhibited adhesive failure and reached a state of non-adhesion. Addition of maltodextrin significantly altered the stickiness of sucrose solution. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. O universo que circunda a Educação de Jovens e Adultos nos sensibiliza e nos provoca. Observar que estes alunos e alunas estão em busca de conquistas e sonhos que não puderam se concretizar quando foram gerados nos impulsiona a conduzir esta pesquisa com seriedade e esperança. Este estudo investigou que conhecimentos matemáticos utilizados por professores do Curso Técnico em Metalurgia Integrado ao Ensino Médio na modalidade de Educação de Jovens e Adultos. Influenciam diálogos entre matemática e outras disciplinas do curso considerando a perspectiva da formação integral dos estudantes. Assim, nos propomos a analisar conhecimentos matemáticos que estão presentes em ações e materiais didáticos utilizados por professores em diferentes disciplinas do Curso Técnico em Metalurgia Integrado ao Ensino Médio na modalidade de Educação de Jovens e Adultos. No intuito de responder a questão proposta e alcançar os objetivos expostos, este estudo torna-se mais relevante por estar diretamente envolvido no processo de consolidação do Programa Nacional de Integração da Educação Profissional com a Educação Básica na Modalidade de Educação de Jovens e Adultos – PROEJA do Curso de Metalurgia ofertado pelo IFES/Vitória, pautado na idealização de integração do seu currículo. Portanto, discutir o projeto de integração curricular que norteia o PROEJA tornou-se uma meta em movimento dessa investigação. Nesta direção, observamos o reflexo de como as práticas e materiais didáticos utilizados por professores, que atuam nesta modalidade, puderam contribuir para discussões que nos ajudaram na compreensão do processo de ensino e aprendizagem dos educandos participantes, com vistas ao desenvolvimento no trabalho ou na formação profissional, como na constituição de conhecimentos científicos, escolares/tecnológicos e culturais. Optamos por direcionar a reflexão teórica deste capítulo em conceitos específicos. Assim, ao tratar da Educação de Jovens e Adultos seremos conduzidos pelos estudos e pesquisas de Paulo Freire (1996, 2000, 2005), Maria da Conceição Fonseca (2007) e Jane Paiva (2009); ao direcionarmos para a Teoria do Ensino Integrado e a Educação Profissional faremos uso dos estudos de Gaudêncio Frigotto (2010) e Marise Ramos (2010); quanto às discussões que refletem acerca da Educação Matemática Critica recorremos às ideias de Ole Skovsmose (2001, 2007).

Este trabalho é resultado da investigação que teve como objetivo analisar o processo de construção dos Projetos Políticos Pedagógicos dos cursos do Proeja no contexto do Ifes campus Vitória. O problema de pesquisa buscou captar os movimentos e as experiências desencadeados nesse processo. No percurso metodológico, com ênfase na pesquisa qualitativa, foi necessário entrelaçar duas abordagens: a etnografia escolar e a pesquisa-ação em função da atuação profissional da pesquisadora no lócus de estudo. Variados instrumentos foram utilizados para levantamento e a produção dos dados, dentre os quais: questionários, entrevistas, diário de campo das observações, pesquisa bibliográfica e documental. Participaram da pesquisa aproximadamente 80 pessoas, entre docentes, alunos e gestores, abordados em contextos específicos: o grupo de formação continuada, a comissão dos projetos, o encontros dos alunos, a reunião intermediária dentre outros. O referencial teórico-metodológico pautado na perspectiva do materialismo histórico dialético embasou toda a trajetória investigativa, em coerência com a base da produção das pesquisas sobre trabalho e educação e por se constituir a referência que fundamenta os princípios estruturantes do currículo integrado na perspectiva da formação humana. Por meio da metáfora dos observatórios, focamos nossas lentes sobre as questões que desafiaram a construção dos projetos políticos pedagógicos e sua coerência com os princípios epistemológicos, políticos e pedagógicos do Proeja. Nesse movimento, diversos olhares foram captados, possibilitando-nos levantar os seguintes resultados: o percurso de construção dos projetos foi marcado por contradições que perpassam todo o processo e que constituíram um debate profícuo que tenciona a gestão pedagógica, administrativa e financeira do Ifes campus Vitória. O movimento se constituiu também em um processo de construção, partilha de saberes e experiências, impulsionado pela busca da apreensão dos sentidos da integração, que contraditoriamente não alcançou seus objetivos, embora não se possa negar os resultados positivos do processo no interior da Instituição. Dessa forma, os desafios para efetivação da formação integrada no Ifes persistem. Ganha centralidade nessa discussão os sujeitos a quem o programa se volta e suas demandas de formação, bem como as condições materiais de oferta dos cursos e de forma especial as condições de envolvimento dos professores com o programa e as reflexões sobre suas práticas.

Esta pesquisa documental analisa as concepções de alfabetização, leitura e escrita subjacentes à Provinha Brasil no período 2008-2012 e o panorama em que esse programa de avaliação é produzido. Parte do referencial bakhtiniano e do conceito de alfabetização de Gontijo (2008, 2013). Ao tomar a Provinha como gênero do discurso, discute os elos precedentes dentro do contexto de produção dessa avaliação, a autoria do Programa e seus principais destinatários. Constata que a Provinha é criada como resposta às demandas de avaliação da alfabetização provenientes de organismos internacionais como o Banco Mundial e a Organização das Nações Unidas para a Educação (Unesco). A avaliação é elaborada pelo Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas Educacionais Anísio Teixeira (Inep) como órgão que coordena as avaliações no País, em colaboração com pesquisadores de universidades e de organizações da sociedade civil, para demonstrar confiabilidade científica aliada à participação democrática no processo de produção. Seus principais destinatários são gestores de Secretarias de Educação e professores. Aos primeiros, cabe aderir ao programa de avaliação e tomar medidas administrativas para sua operacionalização nas redes. Os docentes têm o papel central de seguir as orientações do material e reorganizar sua prática em função de melhorias nos desempenhos das crianças no teste. Estas, por sua vez, são desconsideradas como sujeitos de dizeres e é legitimado um discurso homogeneizador sobre seu desenvolvimento. A partir dos testes aplicados e das matrizes de referência e seus eixos, a pesquisa analisa como a diferenciação teórica entre alfabetização e letramento se concretiza na organização das provas. A alfabetização, entendida como apropriação do sistema de escrita, é avaliada no primeiro eixo do teste principalmente como identificação de unidades menores da língua, como letras, sílabas e fonemas. As habilidades de leitura, ligadas ao letramento como concebido nos pressupostos do programa, são aferidas ora como decodificação de palavras e frases descontextualizadas, ora como apreensão de significado predeterminado do texto. A escrita somente é avaliada no ano de 2008 e por meio de itens que solicitavam codificação de palavras e frases ditadas pelo aplicador. Desse modo, a Provinha Brasil contribui para a subtração das potencialidades políticas e transformadoras do aprendizado da língua materna no País.

This article examines China's proposals on the reform of global governance, and discusses the main features of China's proposing behavior in the cases of the WTO Doha Round negotiation and G-20 Process. The main findings are: (1) in the critical junctures of global governance reform, China engaged the reform of the global governance institutions proactively, and put forward a series of reform proposals; (2) in proposing behavior, China argued the global governance institutions should be properly adjusted without intention to change the basic principles, refrained from playing a leadership role while proposing jointly with other countries, and upheld the principled idea of pro-development.

This paper brings a comprehensive analysis of the peacebuilding process conducted by the UN in Timor-Leste. Drawing on fieldwork, interviews, and secondary sources, the paper brings light to the main fragilities of this process. Firstly, the paper briefly outlines the scholarly debate around UN peacebuilding process. Then, the paper brings an overview of the UN missions deployed to Timor-Leste. Finally, the paper identifies the major limitations of such engagement. By highlighting the main flaws of this peacebuilding process, the paper opens the space for (re)thinking alternative ways of building peace in post-conflict scenarios.

Backcrossing has been little used in cacao breeding, particularly due to the long time required to transfer genes and recover the genetic background of the recurrent parent. The objective of this study was to select individuals, resulting from the backcross CEPEC-42 x SIC-19, genetically related to the recurrent parent SIC-19 by using RAPD molecular markers, among those with resistance to witches' broom. Of the 31 plants that clustered with SIC-19, 18 from the replanted material remained free of the disease in the field, with good vegetative aspect and, therefore can be used for backcross to reach the desired objective.

The paper proposes a methodology especially focused on the generation of strategic plans of action, emphasizing the relevance of having a structured timeframe classification for the actions. The methodology explicitly recognizes the relevance of long-term goals as strategic drivers, which must insure that the complex system is capable to effectively respond to changes in the environment. In addition, the methodology employs engineering systems techniques in order to understand the inner working of the system and to build up alternative plans of action. Due to these different aspects, the proposed approach features higher flexibility compared to traditional methods. The validity and effectiveness of the methodology has been demonstrated by analyzing an airline company composed by 5 subsystems with the aim of defining a plan of action for the next 5 years, which can either: improve efficiency, redefine mission or increase revenues.

Given the necessity of developing jatropha cultivation equipment, this work adjusted different mathematical models to experimental data obtained from the drying of jatropha seeds submitted to different drying conditions and selected the best model to describe the drying process. The experiment was carried out at the Federal Institute of Goiás - Rio Verde Campus. Seeds with initial moisture content of approximately 0.50 (kg water/kg dry matter) were dried in a forced air-ventilated oven, at temperatures of 45, 60, 75, 90 and 105°C to moisture content of 0.10 ± 0.005 (kg water/kg dry matter). The experimental data were adjusted to 11 mathematical models to represent the drying process of agricultural products. The models were compared using the coefficient of determination, chi-square test, relative mean error, estimated mean error and residual distribution. It was found that the increase in the air temperature caused a reduction in the drying time of seeds. The models Midilli and Two Terms were suitable to represent the drying process of Jatropha seeds and between them the use of the Midili model is recommended due to its greater simplicity.

COORDINSPECTOR is a Software Tool aiming at extracting the coordination layer of a software system. Such a reverse engineering process provides a clear view of the actually invoked services as well as the logic behind such invocations. The analysis process is based on program slicing techniques and the generation of, System Dependence Graphs and Coordination Dependence Graphs. The tool analyzes Common Intermediate Language (CIL), the native language of the Microsoft .Net Framework, thus making suitable for processing systems developed in any .Net Framework compilable language. COORDINSPECTOR generates graphical representations of the coordination layer together with business process orchestrations specified in WSBPEL 2.0
