Thermal interface materials (TIMs) form a mechanical and thermal link between a heat source and a heat sink. Thus, they should have high thermal conductivity and high compliance to efficiently transfer heat and accommodate any differential strain between the heat source and the sink, respectively. This paper reports on the processing and the characterization of potential metallic TIM composite solders comprising of Cu, a high conductivity phase, uniformly embedded in In matrix, a highly compliant phase. We propose the fabrication of such a material by a two-step fabrication technique comprising of liquid phase sintering (LPS) followed by accumulative roll bonding (ARB). To demonstrate the efficacy of the employed two-step processing technique, an In-40 vol. % Cu composite solder was produced first using LPS with short sintering periods (30 or 60 s at 160 degrees C) followed by ARB up to five passes, each pass imposing a strain of 50%. Mechanical response and electrical and thermal conductivities of the fabricated samples were evaluated. It was observed that processing through ARB homogenizes the distribution of Cu in an In matrix, disintegrates the agglomerates of Cu powders, and also significantly increases thermal and electrical conductivities, almost attaining theoretically predicted values, without significantly increasing the flow stress. Furthermore, the processing technique also allows the insertion of desired foreign species, such as reduced graphene oxide, in In-Cu for further enhancing a target property, such as electrical conductivity.

Exciton-phonon coupling and nonradiative relaxation processes have been investigated in near-infrared (NIR) emitting ternary alloyed mercury cadmium telluride (CdHgTe) quantum dots. Organically capped CdHgTe nanocrystals of sizes varying from 2.5-4.2 nm have been synthesized where emission is in the NIR region of 650-855 nm. Temperature-dependent (15-300 K) photoluminescence (PL) and the decay dynamics of PL at 300 K have been studied to understand the photophysical properties. The PL decay kinetics shows the transition from triexponential to biexponential on increasing the size of the quantom dots (QDs), informing the change in the distribution of the emitting states. The energy gap is found to be following the Varshni relation with a temperature coefficient of 2.1-2.8 x 10(-4) eV K-1. The strength of the electron-phonon coupling, which is reflected in the Huang and Rhys factor S, is found in the range of 1.17-1.68 for QDs with a size of 2.5-4.2 nm. The integrated PL intensity is nearly constant until 50 K, and slowly decreases up to 140 K, beyond which it decreases at a faster rate. The mechanism for PL quenching with temperature is attributed to the presence of nonradiative relaxation channels, where the excited carriers are thermally stimulated to the surface defect/trap states. At temperatures of different region (<140 K and 140-300 K), traps of low (13-25 meV) and high (65-140 meV) activation energies seem to be controlling the quenching of the PL emission. The broadening of emission linewidth is found to due to exciton-acoustic phonon scattering and exciton-longitudinal optical (LO) phonon coupling. The exciton-acoustic phonon scattering coefficient is found to be enhanced up to 55 MU eV K-1 due to a stronger confinement effect. These findings give insight into understanding the photophysical properties of CdHgTe QDs and pave the way for their possible applications in the fields of NIR photodetectors and other optoelectronic devices.

MoTe2 with a narrow band-gap of similar to 1.1 eV is a promising candidate for optoelectronic applications, especially for the near-infrared photo detection. However, the photo responsivity of few layers MoTe2 is very small (<1mAW(-1)). In this work, we show that a few layer MoTe2-graphene vertical heterostructures have a much larger photo responsivity of similar to 20mAW(-1). The trans-conductance measurements with back gate voltage show on-off ratio of the vertical transistor to be similar to(0.5-1) x 10(5). The rectification nature of the source-drain current with the back gate voltage reveals the presence of a stronger Schottky barrier at the MoTe2-metal contact as compared to the MoTe2-graphene interface. In order to quantify the barrier height, it is essential to measure the work function of a few layers MoTe2, not known so far. We demonstrate a method to determine the work function by measuring the photo-response of the vertical transistor as a function of the Schottky barrier height at the MoTe2-graphene interface tuned by electrolytic top gating. ZnO nanotetrapods with hexagonal crown were synthesized on a silicon wafer by vapor transport process at a low temperature of 630 °C and normal pressure without the presence of catalysts. The results demonstrated that the as-synthesized products with slender legs and regular hexagonal crown are single crystal with wurtzite structure and preferentially grow up along 001 direction. Photoluminescence spectra revealed that the green emission originated from oxygen vacancies overwhelmed that of the near-band-edge ultraviolet peak, which suggests the peculiar-shaped nanotetrapods may have potential applications in multichannel nano-optoelectronic devices.

In order to assess the safety of high-energy solid propellants, the effects of damage on deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) in a nitrate ester plasticized polyether (NEPE) propellant, is investigated. A comparison of DDT in the original and impacted propellants was studied in steel tubes with synchronous optoelectronic triodes and strain gauges. The experimental results indicate that the microstructural damage in the propellant enhances its transition rate from deflagration to detonation and causes its danger increase. It is suggested that the mechanical properties of the propellant should be improved to restrain its damage so that the likelihood of DDT might be reduced.

Modeling of fluid flows in crystal growth processes has become an important research area in theoretical and applied mechanics. Most crystal growth processes involve fluid flows, such as flows in the melt, solution or vapor. Theoretical modeling has played an important role in developing technologies used for growing semiconductor crystals for high performance electronic and optoelectronic devices. The application of devices requires large diameter crystals with a high degree of crystallographic perfection, low defect density and uniform dopant distribution. In this article, the flow models developed in modeling of the crystal growth processes such as Czochralski, ammonothermal and physical vapor transport methods are reviewed. In the Czochralski growth modeling, the flow models for thermocapillary flow, turbulent flow and MHD flow have been developed. In the ammonothermal growth modeling, the buoyancy and porous media flow models have been developed based on a single-domain and continuum approach for the composite fluid-porous layer systems. In the physical vapor transport growth modeling, the Stefan flow model has been proposed based on the flow-kinetics theory for the vapor growth. In addition, perspectives for future studies on crystal growth modeling are proposed. (c) 2008 National Natural Science Foundation of China and Chinese Academy of Sciences.
