The effectiveness of simple measures to increase attendance at first appointments is briefly reviewed. The Family Trauma Centre’s remit and pre-study engagement process are described. The perceived idiosyncratic aspects of inviting people suffering from psychological trauma to attend a clinical service are noted as contributory factors in initially tolerating a high first appointment DNA rate. Three new initial engagement processes are then described and results of their application to 30 referrals in total are presented. The overwhelming finding is that paying close attention to any of the three initial engagement processes significantly increases first appointment attendance. Based on these findings the Centre developed a new initial engagement protocol.. The principle that services should pay more attention to their engagement processes than on the characteristics of their client groups when seeking to reduce first appointment DNA rates is supported.

In this article, we present position indication functionality as obtained by using a retrodirective array, thereby allowing location information extraction of the position of the remote transmitter with which the retrodirective array is cooperating. This is carried out using straightforward circuitry with no requirement for complex angle of arrival algorithms, thereby giving a result in real time enabling tracking of fast moving transmitters. We show using a 10 x element retrodirective array, operating at 2.4 GHz that accuracies of far-field angle of arrival of within +/- 1 degrees over the arrays +/- 30 degrees azimuth field of view are possible. While in the near-field for angles of arrival of +/- 10 degrees it is possible to extract the position of a dipole source down to a resolution of 032 lambda. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper discusses the monitoring of complex nonlinear and time-varying processes. Kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) has gained significant attention as a monitoring tool for nonlinear systems in recent years but relies on a fixed model that cannot be employed for time-varying systems. The contribution of this article is the development of a numerically efficient and memory saving moving window KPCA (MWKPCA) monitoring approach. The proposed technique incorporates an up- and downdating procedure to adapt (i) the data mean and covariance matrix in the feature space and (ii) approximates the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Gram matrix. The article shows that the proposed MWKPCA algorithm has a computation complexity of O(N2), whilst batch techniques, e.g. the Lanczos method, are of O(N3). Including the adaptation of the number of retained components and an l-step ahead application of the MWKPCA monitoring model, the paper finally demonstrates the utility of the proposed technique using a simulated nonlinear time-varying system and recorded data from an industrial distillation column.

The increasing penetration of wind generation on the Island of Ireland has been accompanied by close investigation of low-frequency pulsations contained within active power flow. A primary concern is excitation of low-frequency oscillation modes already present on the system, particularly the 0.75 Hz mode as a consequence of interconnection between the Northern and Southern power system networks. In order to determine whether the prevalence of wind generation has a negative effect (excites modes) or positive impact (damping of modes) on the power system, oscillations must be measured and characterised. Using time – frequency methods, this paper presents work that has been conducted to extract features from low-frequency active power pulsations to determine the composition of oscillatory modes which may impact on dynamic stability. The paper proposes a combined wavelet-Prony method to extract modal components and determine damping factors. The method is exemplified using real data obtained from wind farm measurements.

The development of artificial neural network (ANN) models to predict the rheological behavior of grouts is described is this paper and the sensitivity of such parameters to the variation in mixture ingredients is also evaluated. The input parameters of the neural network were the mixture ingredients influencing the rheological behavior of grouts, namely the cement content, fly ash, ground-granulated blast-furnace slag, limestone powder, silica fume, water-binder ratio (w/b), high-range water-reducing admixture, and viscosity-modifying agent (welan gum). The six outputs of the ANN models were the mini-slump, the apparent viscosity at low shear, and the yield stress and plastic viscosity values of the Bingham and modified Bingham models, respectively. The model is based on a multi-layer feed-forward neural network. The details of the proposed ANN with its architecture, training, and validation are presented in this paper. A database of 186 mixtures from eight different studies was developed to train and test the ANN model. The effectiveness of the trained ANN model is evaluated by comparing its responses with the experimental data that were used in the training process. The results show that the ANN model can accurately predict the mini-slump, the apparent viscosity at low shear, the yield stress, and the plastic viscosity values of the Bingham and modified Bingham models of the pseudo-plastic grouts used in the training process. The results can also predict these properties of new mixtures within the practical range of the input variables used in the training with an absolute error of 2%, 0.5%, 8%, 4%, 2%, and 1.6%, respectively. The sensitivity of the ANN model showed that the trend data obtained by the models were in good agreement with the actual experimental results, demonstrating the effect of mixture ingredients on fluidity and the rheological parameters with both the Bingham and modified Bingham models.

The studies on PKMs have attracted a great attention to robotics community. By deploying a parallel kinematic structure, a parallel kinematic machine (PKM) is expected to possess the advantages of heavier working load, higher speed, and higher precision. Hundreds of new PKMs have been proposed. However, due to the considerable gaps between the desired and actual performances, the majorities of the developed PKMs were the prototypes in research laboratories and only a few of them have been practically applied for various applications; among the successful PKMs, the Exechon machine tool is recently developed. The Exechon adopts unique over-constrained structure, and it has been improved based on the success of the Tricept parallel kinematic machine. Note that the quantifiable theoretical studies have yet been conducted to validate its superior performances, and its kinematic model is not publically available. In this paper, the kinematic characteristics of this new machine tool is investigated, the concise models of forward and inverse kinematics have been developed. These models can be used to evaluate the performances of an existing Exechon machine tool and to optimize new structures of an Exechon machine to accomplish some specific tasks.
