A novel method of preparation of the Si nanoparticles (NPs) incorporated in tellurite TeO2-WO3-Bi2O3 (TWB) thin films is proposed. This mew method applies RF magnetron sputtering technique at room temperature. The incorporation of Si NP was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM); isolated Si NPs with diameters of around 6 nm are observed. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) was performed during TEM analysis in order to confirm the presence of Si NP and also the other elements of the thin film. The thin films are explored with respect to the photoinduced changes of the reflectivity within the 400-65 nm spectra range using a 10 ns pulsed Nd:YAG with power densities varying up to 400 MW/cm2 and beam diameter within the 3-5 mm range. The observed processes are analyzed within a framework of trapping level conceptions for the Si NP. The possible application of the discovered materials as optical sensitive sensors is proposed. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Eumelanin pigments show hydration-dependent conductivity, broad-band UV-vis absorption, and chelation of metal ions. Solution-processing of synthetic eumelanins opens new possibilities for the characterization of eumelanin in thin film form and its integration into bioelectronic devices. We investigate the effect of different synthesis routes and processing solvents on the growth, the morphology, and the chemical composition of eumelanin thin films using atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We further characterize the films by transient electrical current measurements obtained at 50% to 90% relative humidity, relevant for bioelectronic applications. We show that the use of dimethyl sulfoxide is preferable over ammonia solution as processing solvent, yielding homogeneous films with surface roughnesses below 0.5 nm and a chemical composition in agreement with the eumelanin molecular structure. These eumelanin films grow in a quasi layer-by-layer mode, each layer being composed of nanoaggregates, 1-2 nm high, 10-30 nm large. The transient electrical measurements using a planar two-electrode device suggest that there are two contributions to the current, electronic and ionic, the latter being increasingly dominant at higher hydration, and point to the importance of time-dependent electrical characterization of eumelanin films. Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films were prepared using reactive radio-frequency magnetron sputtering of a pure metallic zinc target onto glass substrates. The evolution of the surface morphology and the optical properties of the films were studied as a function of the substrate temperature, which was varied from 50 to 250 C. The surface topography of the samples was examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM), and their optical properties were studied via transmittance measurements in the UV-Vis-NIR region. DRX and AFM analyses showed that the surface morphology undergoes a structural transition at substrate temperatures of around 150 C. Actually, at 50 C the formation of small grains was observed while at 250 C the grains observed were larger and had more irregular shapes. The optical gap remained constant at ∼3.3 eV for all films. In the visible region, the average optical transmittance was 80 %. From these results, one can conclude that the morphological properties of the ZnO thin films were more greatly affected by the substrate temperature, due to mis-orientation of polycrystalline grains, than were the optical properties. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

The aimof this study was to evaluate the stress distribution on bone tissue with a single prosthesis supported by implants of large and conventional diameter and presenting different veneering materials using the 3-D finite elementmethod. Sixteenmodels were fabricated to reproduce a bone block with implants, using two diameters (3.75 × 10 mmand 5.00 × 10 mm), four different veneering materials (composite resin, acrylic resin, porcelain, and NiCr crown), and two loads (axial (200 N) and oblique (100 N)). For data analysis, the maximum principal stress and vonMises criterion were used. For the axial load, the cortical bone in allmodels did not exhibit significant differences, and the trabecular bone presented higher tensile stresswith reduced implant diameter. For the oblique load, the cortical bone presented a significant increase in tensile stress on the same side as the loading for smaller implant diameters. The trabecular bone showed a similar but more discreet trend. There was no difference in bone tissue with different veneering materials. The veneering material did not influence the stress distribution in the supporting tissues of single implant-supported prostheses. The large-diameter implants improved the transference of occlusal loads to bone tissue and decreased stress mainly under oblique loads.Oblique loading was more detrimental to distribution stresses than axial loading. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. The spin injector part of spintronic FET and diodes suffers from fatigue due to rising heat on the depletion layer. In this study the stiffness of Ga1-xMnxAs spin injector in terms of storage modulus with respect to a varying temperature, 45 degrees C <= T <= 70 degrees C was determined. It was observed that the storage modulus for MDLs (Manganese Doping Levels) of 0%, 1% and 10% decreased with increase in temperature while that with MDLs of 20% and 50% increase with increase in temperature. MDLs of 20% and 50% appear not to allow for damping but MDLs <= 20% allow damping at temperature range of 45 degrees C <= T <= 70 degrees C. The magnitude of storage moduli of GaAs is smaller than that for ferromagnetic Ga1-xMnxAs systems. The loss moduli for GaAs were found to reduce with increase in temperature. Its magnitude of reducing gradient is smaller than Ga1-xMnxAs systems. The two temperature extremes show a general reduction in loss moduli for different MDLs at the study temperature range. From damping factor analysis, damping factors for ferromagnetic Ga1-xMnxAs was found to increase with decrease in MDLs contrary to GaAs which recorded the largest damping factor at 45 degrees C <= T <= 70 degrees C Hence, MDL of 20% shows little damping followed by 50% while MDL of 0% has the most damping in an increasing trend with temperature. Objective: This study evaluated the influence of different surface treatments on the resin bond strength/light-cured characterizing materials (LCCMs), using the intrinsic characterization technique. The intrinsic technique is characterized by the use of LCCMs between the increments of resin composite (resin/thin film of LCCM/external layer of resin covering the LCCM).Materials and Methods: Using a silicone matrix, 240 blocks of composite (Z350/3M ESPE) were fabricated. The surfaces received different surface treatments, totaling four groups (n=60): Group C (control group), no surface treatment was used; Group PA, 37% phosphoric acid for one minute and washing the surface for two minutes; Group RD, roughening with diamond tip; and Group AO, aluminum oxide. Each group was divided into four subgroups (n=15), according to the LCCMs used: Subgroup WT, White Tetric Color pigment (Ivoclar/Vivadent) LCCM; Subgroup BT, Black Tetric Color pigment (Ivoclar/Vivadent) LCCM; Subgroup WK, White Kolor Plus pigment (Kerr) LCCM; Subgroup BK, Brown Kolor Plus pigment (Kerr) LCCM. All materials were used according to the manufacturer's instructions. After this, block composites were fabricated over the LCCMs. Specimens were sectioned and submitted to microtensile testing to evaluate the bond strength at the interface. Data were submitted to two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) (surface treatment and LCCMs) and Tukey tests. Results: ANOVA presented a value of p<0.05. The mean values (+/- SD) for the factor surface treatment were as follows: Group C, 30.05 MPa (+/- 5.88)a; Group PA, 23.46 MPa (+/- 5.45)b; Group RD, 21.39 MPa (+/- 6.36)b; Group AO, 15.05 MPa (+/- 4.57)c. Groups followed by the same letters do not present significant statistical differences. The control group presented significantly higher bond strength values than the other groups. The group that received surface treatment with aluminum oxide presented significantly lower bond strength values than the other groups. Conclusion: Surface treatments of composite with phosphoric acid, diamond tip, and aluminum oxide significantly diminished the bond strength between composite and the LCCMs.

This work evaluates fluorinated thin films and their composites for sensor development. Composites were produced using 5 µm starch particles and plasma films obtained from organic fluorinated and silicon compounds reactants. Silicon wafers and aluminum trenches were used as substrates. Film thickness, refractive index and chemical structure were also determined. Scanning electron microscopy shows conformal deposition on aluminum trenches. Films deposited on silicon were exposed to vapor of volatile organic compounds and CV curves were obtained. A qualitative model (FemLab 3.2® program) was proposed for the electronic behavior. These environmentally correct films can be used in electronic devices and preferentially reacted to polar compounds. Nonetheless, due to the difficulty in signal recovery, these films are more effective in one-way sensors, in sub-ppm range.
