Objective: The purpose of this research was to evaluate the histological changes of the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone during dental movement in diabetic rats subjected to low level laser therapy (LLLT).Methods: The movement of the upper molar was performed in 60 male Wistar rats divided into four groups (n = 15): CTR (control), DBT (diabetic), CTR/LT (irradiated control) and DBT/LT (irradiated diabetic). Diabetes was induced with alloxan (150 mg/kg, i.p.). LLLT was applied with GaAlAs laser at 780 nm (35 J/cm(2)). After 7, 13 and 19 days, the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone were histologically analyzed.Results: The mean of osteoblasts (p < 0.01) and blood vessels (p < 0.05) were significantly decreased in DBT compared with CTR at 7 days, whereas the mean of osteoclasts was lower at 7 (p < 0.001) and 13 days (p < 0.05). In DBT/LT, only the mean of osteoclasts was lower than in CTR (p < 0.05) at 7 days, but no difference was observed at 13 and 19 days (p > 0.05). The collagenization of the periodontal ligament was impaired in DBT, whereas DBT/LLT showed density/disposition of the collagen fibers similar to those observed in CTR.Conclusions: LLLT improved the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone remodeling activity in diabetic rats during dental movement. We report on the nonlinear (NL) optical properties of glassy TeO2-GeO2-K2O-Bi2O3 at lambda = 800 nm and lambda = 1,064 nm. Using the Kerr gate technique with a laser delivering 150 fs pulses at 800 nm, we demonstrated the fast NL response of the samples. The modulus of the NL refractive index, n (2), at 800 nm was similar to 10(-15) cm(2)/W. The Z-scan technique was used to determine n (2) a parts per thousand +10(-15) cm(2)/W, at 1,064 nm with pulses of 17 ps. The two-photon absorption coefficient, alpha (2), was smaller than the minimum that we can measure (< 0.003 cm/GW). The figure of merit n (2)/alpha (2) lambda was calculated and indicates that this glass composition has large potential to be used for all-optical switching.

Photoassociation is a possible route for the formation of chemical bonds. In this process, the binding of colliding atoms can be induced by means of a laser field. Photoassociation has been studied in the ultracold regime and also with temperatures well above millikelvins in the thermal energy domain, which is a situation commonly encountered in the laboratory. A photoassociation mechanism can be envisioned based on the use of infrared pulses to drive a transition from free colliding atoms on the electronic ground state to form a molecule directly on that state. This work takes a step in this direction, investigating the laser-pulse-driven formation of heteronuclear diatomic molecules in a thermal gas of atoms including rotational effects. Based on the assumption of full system controllability, the maximum possible photoassociation yield is deduced. The photoassociation probability is calculated as a function of the laser parameters for different temperatures. Additionally, the photoassociation yield induced by subpicosecond pulses of a priori fixed shape is compared to the maximum possible yield.
