Cell death that occurs during ovary differentiation in the honeybee worker's larval development accounts for ovariole reabsorption. From a morphological standpoint, three modes of death were detected. Germinative cells in the ovarioles die by an apoptotic-like process, whereas the somatic cells die by an autophagic process, type 11 cell death; and during pupation, stromatic and ovarian capsular cells die through cytoplasmic disintegration, releasing their components into the hemolymph. These modes of cell death are in part determined by the pattern of tissue organization within which the cell occurs. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

To understand the morphological and histological aspects of internal systems of ticks has become important matter since these arthropods have an impact in the areas of the economy and public health. In this context, this study has provided morphological data on female germinative cells of Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks, ectoparasites of dogs that maintain a close relationship with human on a daily basis. Oocytes of engorged females were analyzed, through the PAS reaction (detection of polysaccharides) counterstained by methyl green (detection of RNA) revealing information that allowed to infer for the first time the presence of Cajal bodies, in the germinal vesicles (nuclei) of developing oocytes, as well as showing how the RNA and the polysaccharides are involved in the dynamics of the vitellogenesis in this species. Leafcutter ants of the genus Atta Fabricius are serious agricultural pests. Morphological studies of immature stages within this group are few, and the data provided for species of considerable importance are usually incomplete. In this study, the immatures of Atta sexdens Linnaeus are described and compared using light and scanning electron microscopy. Only specimens from founding stage colonies (i.e., lacking adult workers) were used. The existence of four larval instars was estimated by a frequency plot of maximum head widths, and the larvae of different instars differed from each other mainly by their bodily dimensions. Worker larvae belonged to two distinct morphological castes: (1) gardeners and nurses and (2) within-nest generalists. The worker larvae described in this study differed from a previous description of the same species by the following traits: the existence of a genal lobe, the number of clypeal hairs, the presence of two hairs on the ninth abdominal somite, the presence of hairs on the anterior surface of the labrum, and the shape of the maxillary palpus. This study provides a comparative analysis of immature stages of A. sexdens that may be relevant to future morphological and biological studies of the Attini. Microsc. Res. Tech. 75:10591065, 2012. In order to investigate the action of the juvenile hormone (JH) on honeybee caste differentiation two exocrine glands, Koschewnikow and Dufour glands, were chosen for study. Two combs (I & II) were taken from a single posture of a queen to use for this research. In comb I the larvae were treated with a topical application of JH in Acetone, and those from the comb II (control group) received only Acetone. Immediately after the emergence of the workers, their glands were dissected and prepared for microscopic measurements. The results showed cell area reduction in the Koschewnikow gland induced by the JH application. The results for the Dufour gland displayed taller epithelial cells with the JH application. The difference in glandular responses to the JH relates to gland function, hormone targets, and individual homeostasis.

In the past 20 years, decentralization has been proposed as a strategy for enhancing public participation. Aid-providing organizations, such as the World Bank, stimulated decentralization processes in several countries in the hope that this would promote civic empowerment, diminish corruption, enhance efficiency, and improve public service delivery. This assumption forms the basis for a comparative analysis into the relation between decentralization and participation at the local level in Brazil, Japan, Russia and Sweden. A multi-level regression analysis using the data of the Democracy and Local Governance Project was undertaken in order to test the 'one size fits all' and the 'diversity in development' hypotheses. The results show that the second hypothesis was corroborated. Perceived autonomy had a different impact on openness to participation depending on the country considered; in one country (Japan), perceived autonomy diminished public officials' willingness to be open to public participation.

The involvement of opioid receptors in the analgesic response was evaluated by the tail-immersion test in simultaneously adrenalectomized and ovariectomized female Wistar rats (210-250 g). The reaction time (mean +/- SEM) for tail withdrawal from hot water decreased significantly 2 weeks after surgery (3.52 +/- 0.20 s) when compared to intact animals (6.09 +/- 0.23 s). Hormonal replacement with dexamethasone (50-mu-g/day) did not affect reaction time (3.38 +/- 0.19 s). However, this response was restored by combined adrenal and gonadal steroid substitution (estradiol 5-mu-g/day and progesterone 1.5-mu-g 6 h before the tests) therapy (5.11 +/- 0.45 s in animals treated with dexamethasone plus estradiol and 5.04 +/- 0.43 s in animals treated with dexamethasone plus estradiol plus progesterone). Naloxone (2 mg/kg) decreased the reaction time of animals treated with adrenal and gonadal steroids (5.11 +/- 0.45 vs 4.15 +/- 0.44 s and 5.04 +/- 0.43 vs 3.87 +/- 0.28 s, respectively, before and after naloxone) but failed to decrease it in rats treated with dexamethasone only (3.88 +/- 0.18 vs 4.34 +/- 0.25 s, before and after naloxone). These observations indicate that gonadal steroids are the most important steroid factors involved in the reaction time to tail immersion in hot water and confirm other reports that the opioid pathways modulating the neuronal circuitry require the presence of these hormones.
