Trace element and isotopic compositions of marine fossils and sediment were analyzed from several Miocene deposits in the circum-Alpine region in order to reconstruct the paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic changes related to sea level changes, basin evolution and Alpine orogeny. To the north and the east the Alps were border by an epicontinental sea, the Paratethys, while to the south the Mediterranean surrounded the uplifting mountains during the Miocene. The thesis mainly focused on sediments and fossils sampled from Miocene beds of these two oceanic provinces. The north Alpine Molasse, the Vienna and Pannonian Basins were located in the Western and Central Paratethys. O-isotope compositions of well-preserved phosphatic fossils in these sediments support deposition under sub-tropical to warm-temperate climate with water temperatures between 14 to 28 °C for the Miocene. δ18O values of fossil shark teeth from different horizons vary similarly to those of the global trend until the end of the Badenian, however the δ18O values show wider range, which indicates local effects iii the sub-basins. The trend of 87Sr/86Sr in the samples roughly agrees with an open ocean environment for the Miocene. Yet a number of samples deviate from typical open ocean compositions with higher ratios suggesting modification of seawater by local and old terrestrial sources. In contrast, two exceptional teeth from the locality of La Moliere have extremely low δ18O values and low 87Sr/86Sr. However, the REE patterns of their enameloid are similar to those of teeth having O and Sr isotopic compositions typical of a marine setting at this site. Collectively, this suggests that the two teeth formed while the sharks frequented a freshwater environment with very low 18O-content and 87Sr/86Sr controlled by Mesozoic calcareous rocks. This is consistent with a paleogeography of high-elevation (~2300m) Miocene Alps adjacent to a marginal sea. The local effects are also reflected in the εNd values of the Paratethyan fossils, which is compatible with input from ancient crystalline rocks and Mesozoic sediments, while other samples with elevated εNd values indicate an influence of Neogene volcanism on the water budget. Excluding samples whose isotopic compositions reflect a local influence on the water column, an average εNd value of -7.9 ± 0.5 may be inferred for the Paratethys seawater. This value is indistinguishable from the Miocene value of the Indian Ocean, supporting a dominant role of ludo-Pacific water masses in the Paratethys. Regarding the Mediterranean, stable C-and O-isotope compositions of benthic and planktonic foraminifera from the Umbria-Marche region (UMC) have an offset typical for their habitats and the changes in composition mimic global changes, suggesting that the regional conditions of climate and the carbon cycle were controlled by global changes. The radiogenic isotope compositions of the fossil assemblages allow for distinction of periods. From 25 to 19 Ma, high εNd values and low 87Sr/86Sr of sediments and fossils support intense tectonism and volcanism, related to the opening of the western Mediterranean. Between 19 and 13 Ma the Mediterranean has εNd values that are largely controlled by incursion of Indian Ocean water. Brief periods of local hinterland control on seawater compositions are indicated by spikes in the εNd record, coinciding with volcanic events and a short sea-level decrease at about 15.2 Ma. Lower 87Sr/86Sr compared to the open ocean is compatible with rapid uplift of the hinterland and intense influx of Sr from Mesozoic carbonates of the western Apennines, while higher 87Sr/86Sr for other sites indicates erosion of old crustal silicate rocks. Finally, from 13 to 7 Ma the fossils have 87Sr/86Sr similar to those of Miocene seawater and their εNd values indicates fluctuating influence of Atlantic, and Indian Ocean or Paratethys sources of seawater entering the Mediterranean, driven by global sealevel changes and local tectonism. RÉSUMÉ DE LA THÈSE Les compositions en éléments traces et isotopiques de fossiles marins et de sédiments on été analysées à partir de nombreux dépôts marins dans la région circum Alpine dans le but de reconstruire les changements paléocéanographiques et paléoclimatiques liés aux changements du niveau marin, à l'évolution en bassins et à l'orogénie alpine. Au nord et à l'est des Alpes, une mer épicontinentale appelée Paratéthys s'est ouverte, alors que plus au sud la mer Méditerranée bordait au Miocène les Alpes naissantes. Le but de cette recherche est de se concentrer sur les sédiments et les fossiles provenant des couches du Miocènes de ces deux provinces marines. Les bassins de la Molasse Alpine du nord, de Vienne et Pannonien étaient situés au niveau de la Paratéthys Occidentale et Centrale. Les compositions isotopiques de l'oxygène de fossiles phosphatés bien préservés dans ces sédiments étayent la théorie d'un dépôt sous un climat subtropical à tempéré chaud avec des températures entre 14 et 28°C pendant le Miocène. Les valeurs δ18O des fossiles sont similaires à la tendance globale jusqu'à la fin du Badénien. Cependant les larges fluctuations en δ18O indiquent des effets locaux au niveau des sous bassins. En outre, deux dents de requin exceptionnelles présentent des valeurs extrêmement basses de δ18O. Ces données suggèrent que ces deux dents se sont formées alors que les requins fréquentaient un environnement d'eau douce avec de faibles valeurs de 18O. Le calcul de la composition isotopique de l'oxygène de cette eau douce permet d'obtenir une estimation de la paléoélévatian moyenne des Alpes du Miocène (~2300m). La tendance 87Sr/86Sr pour ces échantillons concorde approximativement avec un environnement d'océan ouvert au cours du Miocène. Toutefois un nombre d'échantillons dévie des compositions d'océan ouvert typiques, avec des rapports élevés suggérant des modifications de l'eau de mer par des sources locales et terrestres. Les effets locaux sont aussi reflétés au niveau des valeurs en εNd des fossiles paratéthysiens. Ceci est cohérent avec un apport d'anciennes roches cristallines et de sédiments mésozoïques, tandis que d'autres échantillons avec des valeurs hautes de εNd indiquent une influence d'un volcanisme néogène dans le budget marin. En excluant les échantillons dont les compositions isotopiques confirment une influence locale, une valeur moyenne de εNd de 7.9 t 0.5 peut être déduite pour l'eau de la Parathétys. Cette valeur est semblable à la valeur correspondant à l'Océan Indien durant le Miocène, confirmant un rôle dominant de cet océan dans la Paratéthys. Au niveau de la Méditerranée, les compositions en isotopes stables du Carbone et de l'Oxygène de foraminifères planctoniques et benthique de la région Umbria-Marche présentent un offset typique à leurs habitats. De plus les changements dans leurs compositions suivent les changements globaux, suggérant ainsi que les conditions climatiques régionales et le cycle du carbone étaient contrôlés par des phénomènes globaux. La composition en isotopes radiogéniques d'assemblages fossiles permet une reconnaissance sur trois périodes distinctes. De 25 à 19 millions d'années (Ma), des valeurs élevées de εNd et un faible rapport 87Sr/86Sr dans les sédiments soutiennent l'idée d'une activité tectonique et volcanique intense, liée à l'ouverture de la Méditerranée occidentale. Entre 19 et 13 Ma, la Méditerranée montre des valeurs de εNd qui sont largement contrôlées par une incursion d'eau provenant de l'Océan Indien. En effet, aux alentours de 15,2 Ma, des pics dans l'enregistrement des valeurs de εNd, coïncidant avec des événements volcaniques et de brèves diminutions du niveau marin. Enfin, de 13 à 7 Ma, les fossiles ont des rapports ß7Sr/8fiSr similaires à ceux de l'eau de mer au Miocène. Leurs valeurs de εNd indiquent une influence changeante de l'océan Atlantique, et de l'océan Indien ou des sources d'eau de merde la Parathétys qui entrent dans les bassins méditerranéens. Ce changement est guidé par des modifications globales du niveau marin et par la tectonique locale. RÉSUMÉ DE LA THÈSE (POUR LE GRAND PUBLIC) Les analyses des compositions en éléments traces et isotopiques des fossiles marins sont un outil très utile pour reconstruire les conditions océaniques et climatiques anciennes. Ce travail de thèse se concentre sur les sédiments déposés dans un environnement marin proches des Alpes au cours du Miocène, entre 23 et 7 millions d'années (Ma). Cette période est caractérisée par une tectonique alpine active, ainsi que par des changements climatiques et océanographiques globaux importants. Dans le but de tracer ces changements, les compositions isotopiques du Strontium, du Néodyme, de l'Oxygène et du Carbone ont été analysées dans des fossiles bien préservés ainsi que les sédiments contemporains. Les échantillons proviennent de deux provinces océaniques distinctes, la première est la Mer Méditerranée, et l'autre est une mer épicontinentale appelée Parathétys, qui existait au nord et à l'est des Alpes durant le Miocène. Au niveau de la Parathétys Occidentale et Orientale, les compositions isotopiques d'oxygène de dents de requins confirment un dépôt sous un climat subtropical à tempéré chaud avec des températures d'eau entre 14 et 28°C au Miocène. En outre, deux dents de requins exceptionnelles ont enregistré des compositions isotopiques d'oxygène extrêmement basses. Cela suggère que ces deux dents se sont formées alors que les requins entraient dans un système d'eau douce. Le calcul de la composition isotopique de l'oxygène de cette eau douce permet d'obtenir une estimation de la paléoélévation des Alpes au Miocène qui est aussi élevée que celle d'aujourd'hui. La tendance isotopique du Strontium pour ces échantillons concorde approximativement avec un environnement d'océan ouvert. Cependant un certain nombre d'échantillons indique des modifications de l'eau de mer par des sources terrestres locales. Les effets locaux sont aussi visibles au niveau des compositions isotopiques du Néodyme, qui sont en accord avec un apport provenant de roches cristallines anciennes et de sédiments du Mésozoïque, alors que d'autres échantillons indiquent une influence volcanique néogène dans le budget marin. A l'exclusion des échantillons dont les compositions correspondent à une influence locale, les compositions isotopiques du Néodyme de la Parathétys sont très similaires aux valeurs de l'Océan Indien, montrant ainsi un rôle important des masses d'eau IndoPacifiques dans cette région. Au niveau de la Méditerranée, les compositions en isotopes stables du Carbone et de l'Oxygène de foraminifères planctoniques et benthique de la région Umbria-Marche présentent un offset typique à leurs habitats. De plus, les changements dans leurs compositions suivent les changements globaux, suggérant ainsi que les conditions climatiques régionales et le cycle du carbone étaient contrôlés par des phénomènes globaux. Red clays from Cenozoic palaeosols of the Eastern Alps record periods of stagnating uplift and decrease of relief. Tropical to sub-tropical weathering of a crystalline substratum formed dominant or abundant kaolinite, reflecting Paleogene and Early Miocene conditions, respectively. Abundant illite and chlorite, but a lack of kaolinite in red clays on the plateaus of the Northern Calcareous Alps reflects feldspar-poor compositons of the Cenozoic siliciclastic cover. The presence of high Ba/Sr and Rb/Sr ratios and vermiculite in these red clays indicates high precipitation and temperate weathering conditions, respectively, during the Late Miocene and Early Pilocene on the uplifting plateaus of the Northern Calcareous Alps.

The population ecology of clonal plants depends on the number and distribution of ramets formed during growth. Variation in clonal reproduction has previously been explained by variation in effects of abiotic resource heterogeneity and by plant genotypic variation. Different co-occurring species of the mutualistic arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) have been shown to differentially alter growth traits of Prunella vulgaris which we hypothesize would lead to changes in clonal reproduction. Two experiments were carried out to test whether different co-occurring mycorrhizal fungi significantly influence clonal reproduction of P. vulgaris whether this effect also occurs when P. vulgaris is growing in an artificial plant community and how the effects compare with plant genotype effects on clonal growth of P. vulgaris. In the first experiment the number of ramets of P. vulgaris growing in a plant community of simulated calcareous grassland was significantly affected by inoculation with different mycorrhizal fungi. The number of ramets produced by P. vulgaris differed by a factor of up to 1.8 with different mycorrhizal fungi. The fungal effects on the number of new ramets were independent of their effects on the biomass of P. vulgaris. In a second experiment 17 different genotypes of P. vulgaris were inoculated with different mycorrhizal fungi. There were significant main effects of genotypes and mycorrhizal fungi on clonal reproduction of P. vulgaris. The effect of different mycorrhizal fungi contributed more than the effect of plant genotype to variation in size and ramet production. However mean stolon length and spacer length which determine the spatial arrangement of ramets were only significantly affected by plant genotype. There were no mycorrhizal fungal X plant genotype interactions on clonal growth of P. vulgaris indicating that there is no obvious evidence that selection pressures would favor further coevolution between P. vulgaris and mycorrhizal fungal species. In natural communities plants can be colonized by several different AMF at the same time. The effect of the mixed AMF treatment on the growth and clonal reproduction of P. vulgaris could not be predicted from the responses of the plants to the single AMF To what extent however the patterns of colonization by different AMF differ among plants in a natural community is unknown. Since the effects of AMF on growth and clonal reproduction occur on a population of P. vulgaris in a microcosm plant community and because the effects are also as great as those caused by plant genotypic variation we conclude that the effects are strong enough to potentially affect population size and variation of clonal plants in communities.

This Environmental Assessment documents the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process for developing a Comprehensive Conservation Plan (CCP) for the Iowa Wetland Management District (WMD, district). In general, scoping reveals issues that drive alternative ways of managing the district. Implementation of each of those alternative management styles (including the No Action Alternative) may have different effects on the physical, biological, and socio-economic environment. Analysis of these effects reveals the “preferred” alternative, which constitutes the CCP. The CCP includes goals, objectives, and strategies for the district to guide overall management for the next 15 years. The Iowa WMD consists of scattered tracts of habitat (both wetland and upland grassland) known as Waterfowl Production Areas (WPAs). As of 2011, there are 75 WPAs in 18 counties in north-central Iowa totaling 24,712 acres in fee title primarily managed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Even though district acquisition has only occurred in 18 counties to date, a larger 35-county boundary is approved. This boundary follows the historic range of the poorly drained Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) in Iowa, an area known for its waterfowl production. The district also includes 575 WPA acres and approximately 434 Farm Service Agency acres in conservation easements on private land. This plan was prepared with the intent that the strong partnership with the Iowa DNR will continue over the next 15 years.

The first comprehensive study of the marine algal flora of Namibia including descriptions and illustrations of most species is presented. The main objective of this work is to report a flora that, until now, has scarcely been studied. The work compiles all the available information on the marine benthic flora of Namibia and provides new data about it composition and biogeography, as well as detailed descriptions and remarks of most of its species. The samples on which this study is based were collected between 1986 and 1989 in the eulittoral and the upper sublittoral zones of the north half of the Namibian coast. According to the present data, the marine benthic flora of Namibia comprises 196 taxa (147 Rhodophyceae, 20 Phaeophyceae, 15 Ulvophyceae, 6 Cladophorophyceae and 8 Bryopsidophyceae), 21 of which has not been recorded from this coasts. This temperate flora is mainly characterized by a low number of species, a low proportion of Phaeophyceae and a high degree of endemism. Concerning the species number, the flora is quite poor due to both the scarce availability of colonizable substratum and the low diversity of habitats. On the other hand, the low proportion of Phaeophyceae is the reason for which the R/P and (R+C)/P ratios take disproportionately high values and so they are not useful in this geographical area. As regards the degree of endemism, the marine benthic flora of Namibia includes quite a high number of taxa endemic to southern Africa (55 taxa; 28.1% of the flora); 25 of these 55 taxa (12.8% of the flora) are endemic to the biogeographic Benguela Marine Province and only Acrosorium cincinnatum is endemic to the Namibian coasts.

The alliance Agropyro-Rumicion in the eastern half of the IberianPyrenees. This alliance, related to eurosiberian landscapes, is represented in the studied area by three associations, all them inhabiting wet and ruderalized soils: Mentho-Juncetum (very frequent and chiefly formed by Juncus inflexus and Mentha longifolia), Festuco-Caricetum (more sporadic and grassland-shaped) and Rorippo-Agrostietum (only recorded from the upper part of the river Ter, dominated by the rare Rorippa sylvestris and more or less related to the alliance Bidention in some way).

Cessation of traditional management threatens semi-natural grassland diversity through the colonisation or increase of competitive species adapted to nutrient-poor conditions. Regular mowing is one practice that controls their abundance. This study evaluated the ecophysiological mechanisms limiting short- and long-term recovery after mowing for Festuca paniculata, a competitive grass that takes over subalpine grasslands in the Alps following cessation of mowing. We quantified temporal variations in carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) content, starch, fructan and total soluble sugars in leaves, stem bases and roots of F. paniculata during one growth cycle in mown and unmown fields and related them to the dynamics of soil mineral N concentration and soil moisture. Short-term results suggest that the regrowth of F. paniculata following mowing might be N-limited, first because of N dilution by C increments in the plant tissue, and second, due to low soil mineral N and soil moisture at this time of year. However, despite short-term effects of mowing on plant growth, C and N content and concentration at the beginning of the following growing season were not affected. Nevertheless, total biomass accumulation at peak standing biomass was largely reduced compared to unmown fields. Moreover, lower C storage capacity at the end of the growing season impacted C allocation to vegetative reproduction during winter, thereby dramatically limiting the horizontal growth of F. paniculata tussocks in the long term. We conclude that mowing reduces the growth of F. paniculata tussocks through both C and N limitation. Such results will help understanding how plant responses to defoliation regulate competitive interactions within plant communities.

Summary Among ants, wood ants are probably the most fascinating and studied species in temperate European forests. Unfortunately, due to several threats they are nowadays registered in red lists. Recent studies made in the Swiss Jura Mountains ended up in the description of a new sympatric sibling species of Formica lugubris (i.e. Formica paralugubris Seifert 1996). Because of this confusion the biology of F. lugubris is incomplete. Due to the extreme difficulties to distinguish morphologically F. lugubris from F. paralugubris we studied their cuticular hydrocarbons profiles. Irrespective of their geographic origin, we observed quantitative discrimination between species within each caste (workers, males and gynes =young alate female). Moreover, using a behavioural taxonomic approach (i.e. the pupa-carrying test) we showed that ants preferred conspecific worker pupae to those of the sibling species. These first results allowed us to consider the two species as two separate taxonomic units. To understand their coexistence, habitat distribution models were fitted with GIS predictors and factors known to influence wood ant distribution. In the Jura Mountains, although the two species share very similar habitats, they are spatially segregated. F. lugubris occurs more frequently at woodland borders than in forest interiors. We demonstrated with genetic and field data that Formica lugubris displays two different social forms in close proximity in alpine zone (e.g. unmanaged forests of the Swiss National Park). We discovered populations mostly monogynous to weakly polygynous (i.e. one to a few egg laying queens per colony) and monodomous (i.e. one nest per colony), and polygynous/polydomous populations (new nests being founded by colony budding). It is generally admitted that monogyne species disperse well in order to find suitable habitat to found new colonies whereas polygyne species have restricted dispersal and local mating within the nest. In order to compare reproductive strategies of F. lugubris and F. paralugubris (i.e. matings and dealation process) we conducted experiments with sexuals. F, lugubris gynes from monogynous/monodomous populations do not show a local strategy like the obligately polygynous F. paralugubris (i.e. early dealation even without mating, insemination without flight activity and low fat reserve). They always keep their wings, do not mate when not able to fly and have high amount of fat content revealing high survival capacities. On the other side, F, lugubris gynes from polygynous/polydomous populations have lower lipid reserves and displayed a reproductive behaviour close to the F. para lugubris one. After dispersal, wood ant gynes can either start new societies by temporary social parasitism of another species (i.e. subgenus Serviformica) or be adopted intraspecifically in an existing nest. In F. lugubris, we demonstrated that gynes from monogynous/monodomous colonies showed a high success for temporary social parasitism compare to the lower success of gynes from polygynous/polydomous colonies. However, physiological analyses suggested that only gynes from monogynous/ monodomous populations can efficiently disperse and found new nest by temporary social parasitism. Intraspecifically, gynes were accepted to a high degree in polygynous nest and in monogynous nests as long as these nests contained sexuals. In conclusion, Formica lugubris displays a social and dispersal polymorphism (mixed mating and founding system) representing a behavioural plasticity in relation to environmental and ecological conditions. Therefore, conservation measures directed toward this species should try to maintain a maximum of diversity at the habitat level. Résumé Les fourmis des bois sont probablement parmi les espèces de fourmis les plus fascinantes et les plus étudiées des forêts tempérées Européennes. Actuellement, du fait de différentes menaces, elles figurent malheureusement sur listes rouges. Plusieurs études menées au sein du Jura Suisse ont abouti à la description d'une nouvelle espèce jumelle et sympatrique de Formica lugubris (F. para- lugubris Seifert 1996). A cause de cette confusion la biologie de F lugubris est lacunaire. La distinction morphologique de F. lugubris et de F. para lugubris est si difficile que nous avons étudié leurs hydrocarbures cuticulaires. Indépendamment de l'origine géographique, nous avons observé une discrimination quantitative entre les espèces au sein de chaque caste (ouvrières, mâles et jeunes femelles ailées). De plus, à l'aide d'une approche taxonomique comportementale (le test de transport de cocons) nous avons montré que les fourmis préfèrent des cocons d'ouvrières conspécifiques à ceux de l'espèce jumelle. Ces premiers résultats nous permettent de considérer ces deux espèces comme deux unités taxonomiques distinctes et valables. Afin de comprendre leur coexistence, des modèles mathématiques ont été développés avec des données SIG et des facteurs écologiques influençant la répartition des fournis des bois. Dans le Jura, même si elles partagent des habitats fortement similaires, les deux espèces n'occupent pas les mêmes secteurs. F. lugubris est plus fréquente en lisière forestière plutôt qu'en pleine forêt. Nous avons démontré grâce à des données génétiques et de terrain que F. lugubris présente deux formes sociales au sein de la zone alpine (forêts protégées du Parc National Suisse). D'autre part, nous avons découvert des populations monogynes à faiblement polygynes (une à quelques reines pondeuses par colonie) et monodomes (colonies composées d'une seule fourmilière), et des populations polygynes/polydomes (les nouveaux nids étant produit par bourgeonnement). Généralement, les espèces monogynes dispersent sur de grandes distances et peuvent coloniser des habitats favorables à la fondation de nouvelles colonies alors que les espèces polygynes possèdent une dispersion limitée avec des accouplements à l'intérieur des nids. Afin de comparer les stratégies de reproduction de F. lugubris et de F. paralugubris (accouplements et perte des ailes) nous avons mené des expériences avec les sexués. Les jeunes femelles ailées de F. lugubris issues de populations monogynes/monodomes ne présentent pas de stratégie locale comparée à l'espèce obligatoirement polygyne F paralugubris (perte des ailes précoce même si il n'y a pas eu accouplement, insémination possible sans avoir volé activement et faibles réserves de graisse). Elles conservent toujours leurs ailes, ne s'accouplent pas lorsqu'elles sont empêchées de voler et possèdent de grandes quantités de graisse révélant de fortes capacités de survie. D'autre part, les jeunes femelles ailées de F. lugubris provenant de populations polygynes/polydomes ont peu de réserves lipidiques et ont un comportement de reproduction proche de celles de F. paralugubris. Après leur dispersion, les jeunes sexués femelles de fourmis des bois peuvent soit fonder une nouvelle société par parasitisme social temporaire d'un nid d'une autre espèce (sous-genre Serviformica) soit être adoptées dans un nid déjà existant de leur propre espèce. Chez F. lugubris, nous avons pu démontrer que les jeunes sexués femelles de colonies monogynes/monodomes présentent un succès élevé au parasitisme sociale temporaire en comparaison au plus faible succès obtenu avec des sexués provenant de colonies polygynes/polydomes. Cependant, les données physiologiques suggèrent que seules les jeunes sexués femelles de populations mono-gynes/monodomes peuvent disperser efficacement et fonder un nouveau nid par parasitisme social temporaire. Au niveau intraspécifique, les jeunes femelles sont acceptées à un taux élevé dans les nids polygynes mais aussi dans les nids monogynes tant que ces nids possèdent encore de jeunes sexués. En conclusion, F. lugubris est caractérisée par un polymorphisme dans ses structures sociales et ses stratégies de dispersion (système mixte d'accouplement et de fondation) ce qui représente une forte plasticité comportementale en relation avec les conditions environnementales et écologiques. Par conséquent, les mesures de conservation de cette espèce devraient s'attacher à maintenir un maximum de diversité au niveau des habitats.

Ipomoea carnea spp. fistulosa, a native woody perennial, is capable of spreading rapidly over seasonally flooded grassland in the Brazilian Pantanal, South America's largest wetland, thus conflicting with the local cattle ranching. I. carnea is controlled by mowing at the onset of the rainy season, as close as possible before the seasonal flooding. Often, however, flooding begins after the plant has had enough time to re-sprout enabling it to survive. The objective of this study was to verify if Ipomoea carnea plant's production follows a seasonal cycle, and, if so, at which point in this cycle, the plant is most vulnerable to mechanical control measures. Seasonal dynamics of stem and leaf production of I. carnea were studied. The results showed that growth of I. carnea is fastest at the onset of the rainy season in November/December. Production declines when seasonal flooding commences in January/February and almost ceases towards the begin of the dry season in May/June. This leads to the proposal that I. carnea could be controlled more effectively if the weed were mown in the early dry season when its production and its capability to re-sprout is lowest, and if any new sprouts were cut by hand when the seasonal flooding starts.

Kudzu is a cover crop that has escaped cultivation in some subtropical and warm temperate regions. Kudzu has previously demonstrated broad intraspecific physiological plasticity while colonizing new environments. The objective of this paper was to investigate characteristics of kudzu leaflet anatomy that might contribute to its successful growth in climatically distinct environments, and to escape cultivation as well. Fresh and fixed leaflet strips of field-grown plants were analyzed. The lower epidermis of kudzu showed a higher frequency of stomata (147 ± 19 stomata mm-2) than the upper epidermis (26 ± 17 stomata mm-2). The average number of trichomes per square milimeter was 8 for both the upper and the lower epidermis. The average trichome length was 410 ± 200 mum for the upper epidermis and 460 ± 190 mum for the lower epidermis. Cuticle thickness was not considerably different between lower and upper epidermis. The leaflet blade consisted basically of two layers (upper and lower) of unicellular epidermis, two layers of palisade parenchyma and one layer of spongy parenchyma. One layer of paraveinal mesophyll was found between palisade and spongy parenchyma. In conclusion, leaflets of kudzu present anatomical characteristics that might contribute to the broad physiological plasticity shown by kudzu.

In order to contribute to the debate about southern glacial refugia used by temperate species and more northern refugia used by boreal or cold-temperate species, we examined the phylogeography of a widespread snake species (Vipera berus) inhabiting Europe up to the Arctic Circle. The analysis of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence variation in 1043 bp of the cytochrome b gene and in 918 bp of the noncoding control region was performed with phylogenetic approaches. Our results suggest that both the duplicated control region and cytochrome b evolve at a similar rate in this species. Phylogenetic analysis showed that V. berus is divided into three major mitochondrial lineages, probably resulting from an Italian, a Balkan and a Northern (from France to Russia) refugial area in Eastern Europe, near the Carpathian Mountains. In addition, the Northern clade presents an important substructure, suggesting two sequential colonization events in Europe. First, the continent was colonized from the three main refugial areas mentioned above during the Lower-Mid Pleistocene. Second, recolonization of most of Europe most likely originated from several refugia located outside of the Mediterranean peninsulas (Carpathian region, east of the Carpathians, France and possibly Hungary) during the Mid-Late Pleistocene, while populations within the Italian and Balkan Peninsulas fluctuated only slightly in distribution range, with larger lowland populations during glacial times and with refugial mountain populations during interglacials, as in the present time. The phylogeographical structure revealed in our study suggests complex recolonization dynamics of the European continent by V. berus, characterized by latitudinal as well as altitudinal range shifts, driven by both climatic changes and competition with related species.

BACKGROUND: The proportion of adults with positive varicella serology is lower in populations from tropical countries. Therefore immigrants to countries with a temperate climate are at risk of acquiring varicella infection during adulthood. METHODS: We tested two different strategies to prevent varicella outbreaks in housing facilities for asylum seekers arriving in the Canton of Vaud, Switzerland. The first strategy consisted of a rapid response with isolation of the affected individuals and vaccination of the susceptible contacts. The second strategy consisted of a general vaccination upon arrival of all asylum seekers aged 15-39 years with no history of chickenpox. RESULTS: From May 2008 to January 2009 we applied the rapid response strategy. Eight hundred and fifty-eight asylum seekers arrived in the Canton and an attack rate of 2.8% (seven cases among 248 exposed asylum seekers) was observed. The mean cost was US$ 31.35 per asylum seeker. The general vaccination strategy was applied from February 2009 to May 2010, a period during which 966 asylum seekers were registered. This second strategy completely prevented any outbreak at a mean cost of US$ 83.85 per asylum seeker. CONCLUSIONS: Of the two analyzed interventions to prevent varicella outbreaks in housing facilities for asylum seekers, the general vaccination strategy was more effective, more sustainable, and ethically preferable, although more costly.

Sands Timber Lake is a 60 acre man made impoundment near Blockton, Iowa. The lake is the centerpiece of a 235 acre park, which is owned and managed by the Taylor County Conservation Board. The park is equipped with modern campsites, hiking trails, picnic areas, and a playground. Bordering the western shoreline of the lake is a beautiful hardwood timber which inspired the parks name. Sands Timber Lake has a 4,100 acre drainage area comprised of timber, grassland, and row crop. The lake is fed by four large classic gullies which branch off into many smaller gullies dissecting the drainage area. Since construction in 1993, Sands Timber Lake has been an extremely poor fishery. In 2006 Sands Timber Lake was added to the EPA’s 303d list of impaired water bodies. Turbid water was identified as the primary stressor. In 2007 a bathometric map was made which depicts lake-bottom contours and elevations which, when compared to the original survey of the area, revealed an alarming amount of siltation. What was once a twenty-three foot deep lake in 1994 has now been reduced to a mere fourteen feet. In addition to depth being lost, the lake’s surface has been reduced by nearly ten acres, destroying vital fish habitats. Local interest in preserving and enhancing the lake has led to the completion of a thorough watershed assessment and treatment plan. Included in the plan are several elements, the first being upland treatment. Locals are insistent that if conservation is not implemented in the watershed the lake will continue to degrade and park usage will continue to decline.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of the tiller size/density compensation mechanism in Tifton 85 bermudagrass swards grazed by sheep under continuous stocking. Treatments corresponded to four sward steady state conditions (5, 10, 15, and 20 cm of sward surface height), maintained by sheep grazing. The experimental design was a complete randomized block with four replicates. Pasture responses evaluated include: tiller population density, tiller mass, leaf mass and leaf area per tiller, and herbage mass. Tiller volume, leaf area index, tiller leaf/stem ratio, and tiller leaf area/volume ratio were calculated and simple regression analyses between tiller population density and tiller mass were performed. Measurements were made in December, 1998, and January, April, and July, 1999. The swards showed a tiller size/density compensation mechanism in which high tiller population densities were associated with small tillers and vice-versa, except in July, 1999. Regression analyses revealed that linear coefficients were steeper than the theoretical expectation of -3/2. Increments in herbage mass were attributable to increases in tiller mass in December and January. Leaf area/volume ratio values of Tifton 85 tillers were much lower than those commonly found for temperate grass species.

Soils on gypsum are well known in dry climates, but were very little described in temperate climate, and never in Switzerland. This study aims to describe soils affected by gypsum in temperate climate and to understand their pedogenesis using standard laboratory analyzes performed on ten Swiss soils located on gypsum outcrops. In parallel, phytosociological relevés described the vegetation encountered in gypsiferous grounds. Gypsification process (secondary gypsum enrichment by precipitation) was observed in all soils. It was particularly important in regions where potential evapotranspiration exceed strongly precipitations in summer (central Valais, Chablais under influence of warm wind). Gypsum contents were regularly measured above 20% in deep horizons, and exceeded locally 70%, building a white, indurate horizon. However, the absence of such a gypsic horizon in the top soil hindered the use of gypsosol (according to the Référentiel pédologique, BAIZE & GIRARD 2009), the typical name of soils affected by gypsum, but restricted to dry regions. As all soils had a high content of magnesium carbonates, they were logically classified in the group of DOLOMITOSOLS. However, according to the World Reference Base for Soil Resources (IUSS 2014), five soils can be classified among the Gypsisols, criteria being here less restricting. These soils are characterized by a coarse texture and a particulate brittle structure making a filtering substrate. They allow water to flow easily taking nutrients. They are not retained by clay, which does generally not exceed 1% of the fine material. The saturation of calcium blocks the breakdown of organic matter. Moreover, these soils are often rejuvenated by erosion caused by the rough relief due to gypsum (landslides, sinkholes, cliffs and slopes). Hence, the vegetation is mainly characterized by calcareous and drought tolerant species, with mostly xerothermophilic beech (Cephalanthero-Fagenion) and pine forests (Erico-Pinion sylvestris) in lowlands, or subalpine heathlands (Ericion) and dry calcareous grasslands (Caricion firmae) in higher elevations.
