In the present work, tellurite 20Li(2)O-80TeO(2) glasses were prepared with identical nominal composition under different glass-forming histories to produce a stressed and stress-free samples. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) techniques were used to study the effects of the glass-forming histories on the thermal and structural properties of these glasses. The gamma-TeO2 (metastable), alpha-TeO2 and alpha-Li2Te2O5 phases were identified during the controlled devitrification in these glasses. The mestastable character of the gamma-TeO2 phase was clearly observed in the glass under stress but this effect is not so clear in the stress-free glass. The gamma-TeO2 and alpha-TeO2 phases crystallizes during the initial stages of crystallization in both studied glasses while the alpha-Li2Te2O5 phase crystallize in the final stages of the crystallization. The activation energies and Avrami exponent were calculated for both studied glasses with different particle size leading to E-3 > E-2 > E-1 for stressed glass and E-3 > E-2 approximate to E-1 for stress-free glass, where E-1, E-2 and E-3 were associated to the gamma-TeO2, alpha-TeO2 and alpha-Li2Te2O5 phases, respectively. The observed distinct (n) over bar (1) < <(n)over bar>(2) < <(n)over bar>(3) in both glasses is an indicative that nucleation and growth takes place by more than one mechanism in the early stages of the crystallization. Cellulose nanowhiskers were prepared by sulfuric acid hydrolysis from coconut husk fibers which had previously been submitted to a delignification process. The effects of preparation conditions on the thermal and morphological behavior of the nanocrystals were investigated. Cellulose nanowhisker suspensions were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray diffraction. Results showed that it was possible to obtain ultrathin cellulose nanowhiskers with diameters as low as 5 nm and aspect ratio of up to 60. A possible correlation between preparation conditions and particle size was not observed. Higher residual lignin content was found to increase thermal stability indicating that by controlling reaction conditions one can tailor the thermal properties of the nanowhiskers. Background: the aim of the present study was to compare the effects of Er:YAG and diode laser treatments of the root surface on intrapulpal temperature after scaling and root planing with hand instruments. Methods: Fifteen extracted single-rooted teeth were scaled and root planed with hand instruments. The teeth were divided into 3 groups of 5 each and irradiated on their buccal and lingual surfaces: group A: Er:YAG laser, 2.94 mum/100 mJ/10 Hz/ 30 seconds; group B: diode laser, 810 nm/1.0 W/0.05 ms/30 seconds; group C: diode laser, 810 nm/1.4 W/0.05 ms/30 seconds. The temperature was monitored by means of a type T thermocouple (copper-constantan) positioned in the pulp chamber to assess pulpal temperature during and before irradiation. Afterwards, the specimens were longitudinally sectioned, and the buccal and lingual surfaces of each root were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. Results: In the Er:YAG laser group, the thermal analysis revealed an average temperature of -2.2 +/- 1.5degreesC, while in the diode laser groups, temperatures were 1.6 +/- 0.8degreesC at 1.0 W and 3.3 +/- 1.0degreesC at 1.4 W. Electronic micrographs revealed that there were no significant morphological changes, such as charring, melting, or fusion, in any group, although the specimens were found to be more irregular in the Er:YAG laser group. Conclusions: the application of Er:YAG and diode lasers at the utilized parameters did not induce high pulpal temperatures. Root surface irregularities were more pronounced after irradiation with an Er:YAG laser than with a diode laser.

Statement of problem. Denture bases may become increasingly weaker as a result of thermal stress and flexural cyclic loading. Information regarding this potential problem and its relationship to the denture base reline is limited.Purpose. This study evaluated the influence of thermal and mechanical stresses on the strength of intact and relined denture bases.Material and methods. Twenty-eight microwave-polymerized (Acron MC) intact denture bases were prepared in the shape of a 3-mm-thick maxillary denture. Additionally, fifty-six 2-mm-thick denture bases were relined with 1 mm of autopolymerizing resin (Tokuyama Rebase Fast II or New Truliner) (n = 28). Intact and relined specimens were divided into 4 groups (n = 7) as follows: without stress (control); a mechanical stress at 0.8 Hz for 10,000 cycles; 5000 thermal cycles between 5 degrees C and 55 degrees C; or a combination thermo-mechanical stress. The specimens were vertically loaded in compression with a rounded rod at 5 mm/min until failure, using a universal testing machine. Data on maximum fracture load (N), deflection at fracture (%), and fracture energy (N-mm) were analyzed by 2-way analysis of variance and Student-Newman-Keuls tests (alpha = .05).Results. The strength of the denture bases relined with New Truliner was not significantly affected by any of the experimental conditions, but comparing the control groups, New Truliner exhibited the lowest maximum fracture load values. The maximum fracture load of intact denture bases (P = .002) and those relined with Tokuyama Rebase Fast II (P = .01) showed a significant decrease after thermal stress. Additionally, cyclic loading significantly decreased the maximum fracture load (P < .001), deflection at fracture (P = .025), and fracture energy (P < .001) of intact denture bases and those relined with Tokuyama Rebase (P values of .002, .039, and .001, respectively).Conclusion. Thermal and mechanical stresses exert deleterious effects on the strength of intact and/or relined denture bases, which vary according to the relining material used.

Several routes and procedures have been used in these last years as an effort to achieve single-phase mesoscopic-size superconducting samples. In this paper, the effects of using citric acid (CA), tartaric acid (TA) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as chelating agents and ethylene-glycol (EG) as polyhydroxy alcohol were studied in order to establish conditions to avoid the occurrence of BaCO(3) undesirable secondary phase in YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta) (YBCO). Thermal evolution of intermediate compounds formed during the calcinations process by the use of different chelating agents was traced using thermogravimetric and spectroscopic methods. The obtained results indicated that the polymer breakdown of samples prepared using EDTA occurs at higher temperatures than others chelating agents and also reduces the occurrence of BaCO(3) secondary phase as studied by X-ray diffraction measurements. Furthermore, the magnetic response of the mesoscopic-size YBCO specimens obtained was verified showing that samples present different superconducting response.

Purpose: Thermal injury causes catabolic processes as the body attempts to repair the damaged area. This study evaluated the effects of a scald injury on the morphology of muscle fibers belonging to a muscle distant from the lesion. Methods: Thirty Wistar rats were divided into control (C) and scalded (S) groups. Group S was scalded over 45% of the body surface, standardized by body weight. Rats in both groups were euthanized at four, seven and 14 days following the injury. The middle portions of the medial gastrocnemius muscles were sectioned, stained with hematoxylin and eosin and Picrosirius, and submitted to histological analysis. Results: Control group sections exhibited equidistantly distributed polygonal muscle fibers with peripheral nuclei, characteristic of normal muscle. The injured group sections did not consistently show these characteristics; many fibers in these sections exhibited a rounded contour, variable stain intensities, and greater interfiber distances. A substantially increased amount of connective tissue was also observed on the injured group sections. Conclusion: This experimental model found a morphological change in muscle distant from the site of thermal injury covering 45% of the body surface.

This study examined how the standard metabolic rate of tegu lizards, a species that undergoes large ontogenetic changes in body weight with associated changes in life-history traits, is affected by changes in body mass, body temperature, season, and life-history traits. We measured rates of oxygen consumption ((V) over dot o(2)) in 90 individuals ranging in body mass from 10.4. g to 3.75 kg at three experimental temperatures ( 17 degrees, 25 degrees, and 30 degrees C) over the four seasons. We found that standard metabolic rate scaled to the power of 0.84 of body mass at all experimental temperatures in all seasons and that thermal sensitivity of metabolism was relatively low (Q(10) approximate to 2.0-2.5) over the range from 17 degrees to 30 degrees C regardless of body size or season. Metabolic rates did vary seasonally, being higher in spring and summer than in autumn and winter at the same temperatures, and this was true regardless of animal size. Finally, in this study, the changes in life-history traits that occurred ontogenetically were not accompanied by significant changes in metabolic rate.

Objective. To determine the influence of cement thickness and ceramic/cement bonding on stresses and failure of CAD/CAM crowns, using both multi-physics finite element analysis and monotonic testing.Methods. Axially symmetric FEA models were created for stress analysis of a stylized monolithic crown having resin cement thicknesses from 50 to 500 mu m under occlusal loading. Ceramic-cement interface was modeled as bonded or not-bonded (cement-dentin as bonded). Cement polymerization shrinkage was simulated as a thermal contraction. Loads necessary to reach stresses for radial cracking from the intaglio surface were calculated by FEA. Experimentally, feldspathic CAD/CAM crowns based on the FEA model were machined having different occlusal cementation spaces, etched and cemented to dentin analogs. Non-bonding of etched ceramic was achieved using a thin layer of poly(dimethylsiloxane). Crowns were loaded to failure at 5 N/s, with radial cracks detected acoustically.Results. Failure loads depended on the bonding condition and the cement thickness for both FEA and physical testing. Average fracture loads for bonded crowns were: 673.5 N at 50 mu m cement and 300.6 N at 500 mu m. FEA stresses due to polymerization shrinkage increased with the cement thickness overwhelming the protective effect of bonding, as was also seen experimentally. At 50 mu m cement thickness, bonded crowns withstood at least twice the load before failure than non-bonded crowns.Significance. Occlusal "fit" can have structural implications for CAD/CAM crowns; pre-cementation spaces around 50-100 mu m being recommended from this study. Bonding benefits were lost at thickness approaching 450-500 mu m due to polymerization shrinkage stresses. (C) 2012 Academy of Dental Materials. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
