How ready are you? A preliminary investigation into the workplace readiness of final-year education students at a regional university

One criticism of teacher-training programs is that they do not sufficiently prepare graduating teachers for the transition between higher education and the demands and practicalities of classroom teaching. This lack of workplace readiness or 'teacher ready' status of graduates has been attributed to insufficient pre-service practical experience and the failure of training programs to adequately coach pre-service teachers in the delivery of quality pedagogy (Nelson, 2005). On the other hand, the Australian Council of Deans of Education (2005, p. 3) argues that teacher-training programs should provide foundational knowledge and skills with the onus on the profession to build on these foundations and elevate the teacher 'to the point of full and complete practitioner-readiness'. Central Queensland University has tried to respond to these concerns through the introduction of the Bachelor of Learning Management. This paper reports on a preliminary investigation into the perceived strengths and weaknesses of the program in preparing graduates and enabling workplace readiness. Towards the end of 2005 a cohort of final year students was asked to identify their levels of confidence in the transition from university to work; and how the cohort could have been better prepared. It is intended that the issues identified will be translated into recommendations for future program improvements.

Global forms and local forces : PhD enrollments and graduations in Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom, and the United States

 This chapter presents and discusses data from five different nations—Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom, and the United States—on doctoral candidates and graduates. These data are from governmental and institutional sources for the years 1998–2004, a sample that enables changes across a five-year span to be identified. They span important basic characteristics, such as gender, age, discipline, and study load (that is, full-time or part-time study). Therefore, readers can see national as well as international trends and differences in such characteristics and can match these to equivalent and/or contemporary data in their own nations. The five countries considered here are among those whose data were discussed at the 2007 CIRGE research synthesis meeting in Australia. Although these countries are not universally representative of doctoral education, their practices do offer a vivid sense of how vastly the enterprise of doctoral education differs in its scope and dimensions around the world

A novel approach to priority-setting for HIV prevention among adults in Uganda

 The study used economic and ethical theory, empirical evidence and local stakeholders views to develop a checklist of features of an ideal approach to priority-setting. This was used to determine the ideal approach for priority-setting for HIV prevention in Uganda. The Assessing Cost-Effectiveness (ACE) approach was determined to be the ideal approach using the checklist developed. A pilot study using the approach determined that in Uganda, blood safety and HIV counselling interventions are the most cost-effective, equitable and acceptable interventions. Mass media interventions were the least cost-effective and affordable, had a weak evidence base but were more acceptable. On the other hand interventions targeting Most-at-risk-populations were cost-effective but least acceptable. The study demonstrates the importance of balancing technical rigor and due process to ensure buy-in by stakeholders.

Not if, but when we need resilience in the workplace

Workplace resilience is a necessity for organizations and employees given it assists them in overcoming adversity and ultimately succeeding. However, organizational scholars have largely overlooked this construct. In this Incubator, we briefly summarize extant research on workplace resilience to highlight opportunities for theory building and advancement of empirical research.

Investigating The Sources Of Fresh Water Affecting The Hydrological Balance Of Lakes Enriquillo And Azuei (Hispaniola) – Data Analysis

The Enriquillo and Azuei are saltwater lakes located in a closed water basin in the southwestern region of the island of La Hispaniola, these have been experiencing dramatic changes in total lake-surface area coverage during the period 1980-2012. The size of Lake Enriquillo presented a surface area of approximately 276 km2 in 1984, gradually decreasing to 172 km2 in 1996. The surface area of the lake reached its lowest point in the satellite observation record in 2004, at 165 km2. Then the recent growth of the lake began reaching its 1984 size by 2006. Based on surface area measurement for June and July 2013, Lake Enriquillo has a surface area of ~358 km2. Sumatra sizes at both ends of the record are 116 km2 in 1984 and 134 km2in 2013, an overall 15.8% increase in 30 years. Determining the causes of lake surface area changes is of extreme importance due to its environmental, social, and economic impacts. The overall goal of this study is to quantify the changing water balance in these lakes and their catchment area using satellite and ground observations and a regional atmospheric-hydrologic modeling approach. Data analyses of environmental variables in the region reflect a hydrological unbalance of the lakes due to changing regional hydro-climatic conditions. Historical data show precipitation, land surface temperature and humidity, and sea surface temperature (SST), increasing over region during the past decades. Salinity levels have also been decreasing by more than 30% from previously reported baseline levels. Here we present a summary of the historical data obtained, new sensors deployed in the sourrounding sierras and the lakes, and the integrated modeling exercises. As well as the challenges of gathering, storing, sharing, and analyzing this large volumen of data in a remote location from such a diverse number of sources.

o presente trabalho tem seu desenvolvimento apoiado no estudo dos momentos de ruptura e da análise das variáveis dependentes industrialização, sem significar urbanização; tradicionalis mo, embora com industrializacão centralizada, com a ajuda do po der central - e das variáveis que se estruturam ao nível in terno da administração - controle de informações, acomodações administrativas, mecanismos de liderança, controle pOlítico de pessoal e desempenho funcional. 0 capítulo I analisa-se, de maneira sucinta, a admi nistração brasileira, procurando-se com isso identificar as va riáveis mais significativas para a abordagem do tema da monogr~ fia, apontando sempre os problemas de poder local e sua influên cia no quadro administrativo, para analisar as tentativas de mu danças empreendidas. 10 capítulo 2 descreve-se a situação brasileira iden tificada como sociedade prismática. Tomando-se como base a ter minologia de Fred iiggs, monta-se um quadro de transição e de alterações do setor administrativo. Analisa-se também a admi nistração como um todo e, em particular, sua como instrumento modernizador. descentralização 10 capítulo 3 discute-se o conceito de autarquia e sua fundamentação jurídico-administrativa, à vista de dispositi vos constitucionais e legislação específica. Concluindo, procura-se mostrar que o trabalho se prg pôs uma abordagem conceitual da problemática das autarquias no Brasil, enfocando as várias etapas da administração brasileira.

Uma memória dos pomeranos sob as lentes de Ervin Kerckhoff: produção, guarda e circulação de imagens

A presente dissertação tem por objetivo analisar como se constituiu uma memória sobre a colonização pomerana no estado do Espírito Santo a partir da produção fotográfica do imigrante alemão Ervin Kerckhoff, que conviveu e realizou trabalhos junto às famílias de colonos dos assentamentos de Santa Leopoldina e Santa Maria de Jetibá. A pesquisa procura construir uma biografia desse arquivo fotográfico, que hoje integra o acervo de duas instituições de guarda de distintas naturezas: uma pública - o Museu da Imigração Pomerana, que se localiza no município de Santa Maria de Jetibá -, e uma privada - a Agência Porã, cuja sede se encontra em Vitória. Nesse sentido, o trabalho se volta para o exame de como, por quem e para quem essas fotos foram produzidas, suas características, chegando à discussão sobre a circulação dessas imagens e sobre sua guarda.

Pesquisa: chegada de Ronaldinho ao Flu tem grande impacto nas redes sociais

A chegada de Ronaldinho Gaúcho ao Fluminense movimentou o futebol brasileiro e as redes sociais. Em levantamento feito pela equipe do site Brasileirão na Rede, da Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV), o impacto do R10 no Flu foi enorme. É disparado o atleta mais citado. Na pesquisa, Fred também sempre aparece entre os dez mais citados.

Na disputa por popularidade, R10 fica à frente de Guerrero no Brasileiro

Ronaldinho Gaúcho é o fenômeno de popularidade, e nem os 35 anos de idade fazem os torcedores deixarem o craque em um plano menor. Desde que chegou ao Fluminense, no dia 11 de julho, R10 se transformou no jogador mais citado nas redes sociais, deixando para trás o atacante Guerrero, do Flamengo, que está em segundo lugar. O levantamento foi feito pela Fundação Getúlio Vargas.
