This paper addresses of the advanced computational technique of steel structures for both simulation capacities simultaneously; specifically, they are the higher-order element formulation with element load effect (geometric nonlinearities) as well as the refined plastic hinge method (material nonlinearities). This advanced computational technique can capture the real behaviour of a whole second-order inelastic structure, which in turn ensures the structural safety and adequacy of the structure. Therefore, the emphasis of this paper is to advocate that the advanced computational technique can replace the traditional empirical design approach. In the meantime, the practitioner should be educated how to make use of the advanced computational technique on the second-order inelastic design of a structure, as this approach is the future structural engineering design. It means the future engineer should understand the computational technique clearly; realize the behaviour of a structure with respect to the numerical analysis thoroughly; justify the numerical result correctly; especially the fool-proof ultimate finite element is yet to come, of which is competent in modelling behaviour, user-friendly in numerical modelling and versatile for all structural forms and various materials. Hence the high-quality engineer is required, who can confidently manipulate the advanced computational technique for the design of a complex structure but not vice versa.

Steel hollow sections used in structures such as bridges, buildings and space structures involve different strengthening techniques according to their structural purpose and shape of the structural member. One such technique is external bonding of CFRP sheets to steel tubes. The performance of CFRP strengthening for steel structures has been proven under static loading while limited studies have been conducted on their behaviour under impact loading. In this study, a comprehensive numerical investigation is carried out to evaluate the response of CFRP strengthened steel tubes under dynamic axial impact loading. Impact force, axial deformation impact velocities are studied. The results of the numerical investigations are validated by experimental results. Based on the developed finite element (FE) model several output parameters are discussed. The results show that CFRP wrapping is an effective strengthening technique to increase the axial dynamic load bearing capacity by increasing the stiffness of the steel tube.

Carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) strengthening of metallic structures under static loading has shown great potential in the recent years. However, steel structures are often experienced natural (e.g. earthquake, wind) as well as man-made (e.g. vehicular impact, blast) dynamic loading. Therefore, there is a growing interest among the researchers to investigate the capability of CFRP strengthened members under such dynamic conditions. This study focuses on the finite element (FE) numerical modelling and simulation of CFRP strengthened steel column under transverse impact loading to predict the behaviour and failure modes. Impact simulation process and the CFRP strengthened steel column are validated with the existing experimental results in literature. The validated FE model of CFRP strengthened steel column is then further used to investigate the effects of transverse impact loading on its structural performance. The results are presented in terms of transvers e impact force, lateral and axial displacement, and deformed shape to evaluate the effectiveness of CFRP strengthening technique. Comparisons between the bare steel and CFRP strengthened steel columns clearly indicate the performance enhancement of strengthened column under transverse impact loading.

Light gauge cold-formed steel sections have been developed as more economical building solutions to the alternative heavier hot-rolled sections in the commercial and residential markets. Cold-formed lipped channel beams (LCB), LiteSteel beams (LSB) and triangular hollow flange beams (THFB) are commonly used as flexural members such as floor joists and bearers while rectangular hollow flange beams (RHFB) are used in small scale housing developments through to large building structures. However, their shear capacities are determined based on conservative design rules. For the shear design of cold-formed steel beams, their elastic shear buckling strength and the potential post-buckling strength must be determined accurately. Hence experimental and numerical studies were conducted to investigate the shear behaviour and strength of LCBs, LSBs, THFBs and RHFBs. Improved shear design rules including the direct strength method (DSM) based design equations were developed to determine the ultimate shear capacities of these open and hollow flange steel beams. An improved equation for the higher elastic shear buckling coefficient of cold-formed steel beams was proposed based on finite element analysis results and included in the design equations. A new post-buckling coefficient was also introduced in the design equations to include the available post-buckling strength of cold-formed steel beams. This paper presents the details of this study on cold-formed steel beams subject to shear, and the results. It proposes generalised and improved shear design rules that can be used for any type of cold-formed steel beam.

Fire safety plays a vital role in building design because appropriate level of fire safety is important to safeguard lives and property. Cold-formed steel channel sections along with fire-resistive plasterboards are used to construct light-gauge steel frame (LSF) floor systems to provide adequate fire resistance ratings (FRR). It is common practice to use lipped channel sections (LCS) as joists in LSF floor systems, and past research has only considered such systems. This research focuses on adopting improved joist sections such as hollow flange channel (HFC) sections to improve the structural performance and FRR of cold-formed LSF floor systems under standard fire conditions. The structural and thermal performances of LSF floor systems made of a welded HFC, LiteSteel Beams (LSB), with different plasterboard and insulation configurations, were investigated using four full-scale fire tests under standard fires. These fire tests showed that the new LSF floor system with LSB joists improved the FRR in comparison to that of conventional LCS joists. Fire tests have provided valuable structural and thermal performance data of tested floor systems that included time-temperature profiles and failure times, temperatures, and modes. This paper presents the details of the fire tests conducted in this study and their results along with some important findings.

The AISI 4340 steel has been electroslag refined and the improvement in mechanical properties has been assessed. Electroslag refining (ESR) has improved tensile ductility, plane strain fracture toughness, Charpy fracture energy, and has decreased fatigue crack growth rates. The KIC values for the ESR steel are nearly twice those estimated in the unrefined steel and higher than those obtained in the vacuum arc remelted steel. Fatigue crack growth rates in region I and in region III are found to be decreased considerably in the ESR steel, while they are unaffected in region II. Measurements on heat treated samples have shown that the ESR steel has a better response to heat treatment. Both the suggested heat treatments namely austenitizing at 1140–1470 K as well as the conventional heat treatment of austenitizing at 1140 K have been followed. The improvement in the mechanical properties of ESR steel has been explained on the basis of removal of nonmetallic inclusions and reduction in sulfur content in the steel.

The gravity based structure (GBS) with external SteelConcreteSteel (SCS) sandwich ice-resistant wall has been developed for the Arctic oil and gas drilling. This paper firstly reported the experimental studies on the mechanical properties of steel and concretes under Arctic low temperature. With the test data, design equations were developed to incorporate the influences of the low temperature on these mechanical properties. Two types of Arctic GBS structure with flower-conical SCS sandwich shell type and plate type of ice-resistant wall have been developed for the Arctic offshore structure. Besides the studies on the materials, two SCS sandwich prototype shells and plates were, respectively, prepared and tested under patch loading that simulated the localized ice-contact pressure. The structural behaviors of the SCS sandwich structure under patch loading were reported and discussions were made on the influences of different parameters on the structural behavior of the structure. Analytical models were developed to predict the punching shear resistances of the SCS sandwich structure through modifying the code provisions. The accuracies of the developed analytical models were checked through validations against 27 tests in the literature. Corresponding design procedures on resistances of SCS sandwich structure were recommended based on these discussions and validations.

The crystal and molecular structures of C ,,H,IN302 (I) and C14HIsN302 (II) have been determined by direct methods using three-dimensional X-ray diffractometer data. Crystals of (I) are orthorhombic, space group Pna21, with a = 14.662(6), b = 10.492(5), c = 7.375 (3)A, Z = 4, V = 1134.5 A 3, D O = 1.25 (by flotation), D e = 1.269 Mgm -a, g(MoKa) = 0.085 mm -1. Crystals of (II) are monoclinic, space group P21/a, with a = 7.886 (5), b = 22.011 (8), c = 8.100 (3) A, fl = 103.12 (5) °, Z = 4, V = 1369.2 A 3, D O = 1.23 (by flotation), D e = 1.255 Mg m -3, g(Mo Kct) = 0.080 mm -1. Least-squares full-matrix refinement based on 782 (I) and 1400 independent reflections (II) converged at R = 0.040 (I) and 0.042 (II). The X-ray crystal structures of 4-butyl-1,2-diphenylpyrazolidine-3,5-dione (phenylbutazone)(I). and its 2 : 1 complex (II) with piperazine have been determined by direct methods and the structures refined to R 0.096 (2 300 observed reflections measured by diffractometer) and 0.074 (2 494 observed reflections visuallyestimated). Crystals are monoclinic, space group P21/c; for (I)a= 21.695(4), b= 5.823(2), c= 27.881(4)Å, = 108.06 (10)°, Z= 8, and for (II)a= 8.048(4), b= 15.081(4), c= 15.583(7)Å, = 95.9(3)°, Z= 2. The two crystallographically independant molecules in the structure of (I) are similar except for the conformation of the butyl group, which is disordered in one of the molecules. In the pyrazolidinedione group, the two C–C bonds are single and the two C–O bonds double. The two nitrogen atoms in the five-membered ring are pyramidal with the attached phenyl groups lying on the opposite sides of the mean plane of the ring. The phenylbutazone molecule in (II) exists as a negative ion owing to deprotonation of C-4. C-4 is therefore trigonal and the orientation of the Bu group with respect to the pyrazolidinedione group is considerably different from that in (I); there is also considerable electron delocalization along the C–O and C–C bonds. These changes in geometry and electronic structure may relate to biological activity. The doubly charged cationic piperazine molecule exists in the chair form with the nitrogen atoms at the apices. The crystal structure of (II) is stabilized by ionic interactions and N–H O hydrogen bonds.

Software packages NUPARM and NUCGEN, are described, which can be used to understand sequence directed structural variations in nucleic acids, by analysis and generation of non-uniform structures. A set of local inter basepair parameters (viz. tilt, roll, twist, shift, slide and rise) have been defined, which use geometry and coordinates of two successive basepairs only and can be used to generate polymeric structures with varying geometries for each of the 16 possible dinucleotide steps. Intra basepair parameters, propeller, buckle, opening and the C6...C8 distance can also be varied, if required, while the sugar phosphate backbone atoms are fixed in some standard conformation ill each of the nucleotides. NUPARM can be used to analyse both DNA and RNA structures, with single as well as double stranded helices. The NUCGEN software generates double helical models with the backbone fixed in B-form DNA, but with appropriate modifications in the input data, it can also generate A-form DNA ar rd RNA duplex structures.

The dipole patterns in the ferroelectric and antiferroelectric structures are drawn according to experimentally determined symmetry changes in the ferroelectrics and antiferroelectrics. For the ferroelectrics the dipoles of the unit cells for one domain are oriented in parallel and the directions of the polarisation in the adjacent domains are at definite angles to each other. It is assumed for the antiferroelectrics, that the superstructural unit cell is formed by the adjacent cells of the paraelectrical modification; the subcells having the antiparallel directions of the polarisation. It is these superstructural cells of the antiferroelectrics that are determined during the experimental investigations of the antiferroelectrics. The superstructural cells of the adjacent domains are different. In one case, the difference is that in the adjacent domains, the directions of the polarisation in the subcells form an angle (e.g., in PbZrO3). In other cases the superstructural cells have not only different directions of the polarisation in the subcells but different signs of the enantiomorphism (e.g., NH4H2PO4). In the third case, the only difference is that the superstructural unit cells in the adjacent domains are turned by an angle to each other round the direction of the subcell polarisation [e.g., (NH4)2H3IO6], etc.

An experimental study aimed at understanding the deformational behavior of conventionally reinforced steel fiber concrete beams in pure bending is reported in this paper. One group of beams has steel fibers dispersed in the entire volume of the beam and the second has fibers dispersed over half the depth of the beam on the tension side. A comparative study of the deformational characteristics of these beams has been made. Half-depth fiber inclusion, requiring only half the quantity of fibers of full-depth inclusion, is found to be equally effective in improving the deformational behavior of beams. Thus, by such modes of inclusion of fibers, an economical and efficient use of expensive steel fibers can be realized.

Reinforced concrete corbels have been analysed using the nonlinear finite element method. An elasto-plastic-cracking constitutive formulation using Huber-Hencky-Mises yield surface augmented with a tension cut-off is employed. Smeared-fixed cracking with mesh-dependent strain softening is employed to obtain objective results. Multiple non-orthogonal cracking and opening and closing of cracks are permitted. The model and the formulation are verified with respect to available numerical solution for an RC corbel. Results of analyses of nine reinforced concrete corbels are presented and compared with experimental results. Nonlinear finite element analysis of reinforced concrete structures is shown to be a complement and also a feasible alternative to laboratory testing.

The oil phase, in an oil-in-water emulsion on a steel substrate, is strongly repelled by the substrate. The oil in this situation does not wet the steel and steel/steel friction is high. In this work we disperse anionic surfactants in an oil film and study the effect of this dispersion on the force of interaction between a silica colloid probe (AFM) carrying the oil film and a steel substrate in water. It is observed that when the surfactant is oil insoluble and the interaction time is short the strong entropic repulsion (without the surfactant) is replaced by a strong attraction. The steel on steel sliding friction in this case is low compared to that what is achieved when the surfactant is soluble in oil. The rationale underlying these interactions is explored here. Sliding tests were conducted, in air, of YTZP ceramic pins against steel discs at an applied pressure of 15.5 MPa over a speed range of 0.3 to 4.0 ms(-1). Pin wear was not detectable until 2.0 m s(-1), after which a finite but small wear rate was observed at 3.0 m s(-1), accompanied by a red glow at the contacting surface. A transition in wear behaviour and friction (mu) occurred at 4.0 ms(-1), increasing the former by over two orders of magnitude. Both mu and wear behaviour changed with time at 4.0 m s(-1). During initial periods mu was high and wear rate increased steadily with time accompanied by ceramic transfer onto the disc, which increased with time. When disc coverage exceeds a certain threshold value, mu decreased rapidly and the wear rate stabilized at a very high value. Metal transfer was not observed at any speed. High surface temperatures brought about significant adhesion between TZP and steel and this together with enhanced plastic deformation brought about a transition in wear behaviour.
