Experimental results are presented of ionisation (a)a nd electron attachment ( v ) coefficients evaluated from the steady-state Townsend curregnrto wth curves for SFsN2 and CC12FrN2 mixtures over the range 60 S E/P 6 240 (where E is the electric field in V cm" and P is the pressure in Torr reduced to 20'C). In both the mixtures the attachment coefficients (vmu) evaluated were found to follow the relationship; where 7 is the attachment coefficient of pure electronegative gas, F is the fraction of the electronegative gas in the mixture and /3 is a constant. The ionisation coefficients (amlx) generally obeyed the relationship where w2a nd aAa re thei onisation coefficients of nitrogen and the attachinggraess pectively. However, in case of CC12FrN2 mixtures, there were maxima in the a,,,v,a,l ues for CCI2F2 concentrations varying between 10% and 30% at all values of E/P investigated. Effective ionisation coefficients (a - p)/P obtained in these binary mixtures show that the critical E/P (corresponding to (a - q)/P = 0) increases with increase in the concentration of the electronegative gas up to 40%. Further increase in the electronegative gas content does not seem to alter the critical E/P.

The present work was designed to study certain aspects of the endocrine regulation of gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor (GnRH-R) in the pituitary of the teleost fish tilapia. A GnRH-R was cloned from the pituitary of hybrid tilapia (taGnRH-R) and was identified as a typical seven-transmembrane receptor. Northern blot analysis revealed a single GnRH-R transcript in the pituitary of approximately 2.3 kilobases. The taGnRH-R mRNA levels were significantly higher in females than in males. Injection of the salmon GnRH analog (sGnRHa; 5–50 μg/kg) increased the steady-state levels of taGnRH-R mRNA, with the highest response recorded at 25 μg/kg and at 36 h. At the higher dose of sGnRHa (50 μg/kg), taGnRH-R transcript appeared to be down-regulated. Exposure of tilapia pituitary cells in culture to graded doses (0.1–100 nM) of seabream (sbGnRH = GnRH I), chicken II (cGnRH II), or salmon GnRH (sGnRH = GnRH III) resulted in a significant increase in taGnRH-R mRNA levels. The highest levels of both LH release and taGnRH-R mRNA levels were recorded after exposure to cGnRH II and the lowest after exposure to sbGnRH. The dopamine-agonist quinpirole suppressed LH release and mRNA levels of taGnRH-R, indicating an inhibitory effect on GnRH-R synthesis. Collectively, these data provide evidence that GnRH in tilapia can up- regulate, whereas dopamine down-regulates, taGnRH-R mRNA levels.

Acoustic impedance of a termination, or of a passive subsystem, needs to be measured not only for acoustic lining materials but also in the exhaust systems of flow machinery, where mean flow introduces peculiar problems. Out of the various methods of measurement of acoustic impedance, the discrete frequency, steady state, impedance tube method [1] is most reliable, though time consuming, and requires no special instrumentation.

Purpose: Presence of neurophysiological abnormalities in dyslexia has been a conflicting issue. This study was performed to evaluate the role of sensory visual deficits in the pathogenesis of dyslexia. Methods: Pattern visual evoked potentials (PVEP) were recorded in 72 children including 36 children with dyslexia and 36 children without dyslexia (controls) who were matched for age, sex and intelligence. Two check sizes of 15 and 60 min of arc were used with temporal frequencies of 1.5 Hz for transient and 6 Hz for steadystate methods. Results: Mean latency and amplitude values for 15 min arc and 60 min arc check sizes using steady state and transient methods showed no significant difference between the two study groups (P values: 0.139/0.481/0.356/0.062).Furthermore, no significant difference was observed between two methods of PVEPs in dyslexic and normal children using 60min arc with high contrast(Pvalues: 0.116, 0.402, 0.343 and 0.106). Conclusion: The sensitivity of PVEP has high validity to detect visual deficits in children with dyslexic problem. However, no significant difference was found between dyslexia and normal children using high contrast stimuli.

The theory of transient mode locking for an active modulator in an intracavity frequency-doubled laser is presented. The theory is applied to mode-locked and intracavity frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser and the mode-locked pulse width is plotted as a function of number of round trips inside the cavity. It is found that the pulse compression is faster and the system takes a very short time to approach the steady state in the presence of a second harmonic generating crystal inside the laser cavity. The effect of modulation depth and the second harmonic conversion efficiency on the temporal behavior of the pulse width is discussed. Neuronal oscillations are thought to underlie interactions between distinct brain regions required for normal memory functioning. This study aimed at elucidating the neuronal basis of memory abnormalities in neurodegenerative disorders. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) was used to measure oscillatory brain signals in patients with Alzheimer s disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disease causing progressive cognitive decline, and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a disorder characterized by mild but clinically significant complaints of memory loss without apparent impairment in other cognitive domains. Furthermore, to help interpret our AD/MCI results and to develop more powerful oscillatory MEG paradigms for clinical memory studies, oscillatory neuronal activity underlying declarative memory, the function which is afflicted first in both AD and MCI, was investigated in a group of healthy subjects. An increased temporal-lobe contribution coinciding with parieto-occipital deficits in oscillatory activity was observed in AD patients: sources in the 6 12.5 Hz range were significantly stronger in the parieto-occipital and significantly weaker in the right temporal region in AD patients, as compared to MCI patients and healthy elderly subjects. Further, the auditory steady-state response, thought to represent both evoked and induced activity, was enhanced in AD patients, as compared to controls, possibly reflecting decreased inhibition in auditory processing and deficits in adaptation to repetitive stimulation with low relevance. Finally, the methodological study revealed that successful declarative encoding and retrieval is associated with increases in occipital gamma and right hemisphere theta power in healthy unmedicated subjects. This result suggests that investigation of neuronal oscillations during cognitive performance could potentially be used to investigate declarative memory deficits in AD patients. Taken together, the present results provide an insight on the role of brain oscillatory activity in memory function and memory disorders.

The kinetics of estrogen (E) modulation of retinol-binding protein (RBP) production in the liver of immature chicks were compared with those governing de novo induction of riboflavin carrier protein (RCP) in the same tissue. A single dose of E markedly enhanced the plasma levels of RBP without any detectable lag period to reach peak value by 24 h and this was followed by a decline to attain the baseline by 4 days. There was no amplification of the response during secondary stimulation unlike the case with RCP induction. With multiple E administration, the 4-fold increased plasma RBP concentrations were sustained at a steady state during both primary and secondary stimulations, whereas concomitant RCP concentration progressively increased with each hormone administration and this response was further amplified during secondary stimulation. Unlike RCP induction, enhanced RBP accumulation was not strictly E dose dependent although a minimal threshold level of the steroid was required to elicit measurable response. Progesterone (P) could neither modulate nor substitute for E in enhancing plasma levels of either of the 2 proteins while the anti-estrogens, en- and zuclomifene citrate severely suppressed the production of both the proteins. RCP induction was completely inhibited by both α-amanitin and cycloheximide for prolonged periods while E-stimulated RBP production was affected only partially by α-amanitin. Likewise, cycloheximide inhibition of RBP accumulation followed a pattern similar to that of hepatic general protein synthesis.

The monsoon depressions intensify over the Bay of Bengal, move in a west-north-west (WNW) direction and dissipate over the Indian continent. No convincing physical explanation for their observed movement has so far been arrived at, but here, I suggest why the maximum precipitation occurs in the western sector of the depression and propose a feedback mechanism for the WNW movement of the depressions. We assume that a heat source is created over the Bay of Bengal due to organization of cumulus convection by the initial instability. In a linear sense, heating at this latitude (20° N), produces an atmospheric response mainly in the form of a stationary Rossby–gravity wave to the west of the heat source. The low-level vorticity (hence the frictional convergence) and the vertical velocity associated with the steady-state response is such that the maximum moisture convergence (and precipitation) is expected to occur in the WNW sector at a later time. Thus, the heat source moves to the WNW sector at a later time and the feedback continues resulting in the WNW movement of the depressions.

Self-contained Non-Equilibrium Molecular Dynamics (NEMD) simulations using Lennard-Jones potentials were performed to identify the origin and mechanisms of atomic scale interfacial behavior between sliding metals. The mixing sequence and velocity profiles were compared via MD simulations for three cases, viz.: sell-mated, similar and hard-softvcrystal pairs. The results showed shear instability, atomic scale mixing, and generation of eddies at the sliding interface. Vorticity at the interface suggests that atomic flow during sliding is similar to fluid flow under Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and this is supported by velocity profiles from the simulations. The initial step-function velocity profile spreads during sliding. However the velocity profile does not change much at later stages of the simulation and it eventually stops spreading. The steady state friction coefficient during simulation was monitored as a function of sliding velocity. Frictional behavior can be explained on the basis of plastic deformation and adiabatic effects. The mixing layer growth kinetics was also investigated.

The creep behaviour of a creep-resistant AE42 magnesium alloy reinforced with Saffil short fibres and SiC particulates in various combinations has been investigated in the transverse direction, i.e., the plane containing random fibre orientation was perpendicular to the loading direction, in the temperature range of 175-300 degrees C at the stress levels ranging from 60 to 140 MPa using impression creep test technique. Normal creep behaviour, i.e., strain rate decreasing with strain and then reaching a steady state, is observed at 175 degrees C at all the stresses employed, and up to 80 MPa stress at 240 degrees C. A reverse creep behaviour, i.e., strain rate increasing with strain, then reaching a steady state and then decreasing, is observed above 80 MPa stress at 240 degrees C and at all the stress levels at 300 degrees C. This pattern remains the same for all the composites employed. The reverse creep behaviour is found to be associated with fibre breakage. The apparent stress exponent is found to be very high for all the composites. However, after taking the threshold stress into account, the true stress exponent is found to range between 4 and 7, which suggests viscous glide and dislocation climb being the dominant creep mechanisms. The apparent activation energy Q(C) was not calculated due to insufficient data at any stress level either for normal or reverse creep behaviour. The creep resistance of the hybrid composites is found to be comparable to that of the composite reinforced with 20% Saffil short fibres alone at all the temperatures and stress levels investigated. The creep rate of the composites in the transverse direction is found to be higher than the creep rate in the longitudinal direction reported in a previous paper.

Preparation of a novel type of titanium-substrate lead dioxide anode with enhanced electrocatalytic activity for electrosynthesis is described. It has been demonstrated that in the presence of a suitable surfactant in the coating solution, an adherent and mainly tetragonal form of lead dioxide is deposited on a platinized titanium surface such that the solution side of the coating is porous while the substrate side is compact. By an analysis of anodic charging curves and steady-state Tafel plots with such porous electrodes in contact with sodium sulphate solution, it has been proved that the electrochemically active area of these anodes is higher by more than an order of magnitude when compared to the area of conventional titanium-substrate lead dioxide anodes. The electrocatalytic activity is also thereby enhanced to a significant degree.

AMPA receptors are an important class of ionotropic glutamate receptors which participate in fast excitatory synaptic transmission in most brain areas. They have a pivotal role in adjustment of cell membrane excitability as their cell membrane expression levels is altered in brain physiology such as in learning and memory formation. AMPA receptor function and trafficking is regulated by several proteins, such as transmembrane AMPA receptor regulatory proteins (TARPs). NMDA-type glutamate receptors are important target molecules of ethanol. The role of AMPA receptors in the actions of ethanol has not been clarified as thoroughly. Furthermore, the regulation of AMPA receptor synthesis and their possible adaptation in neurons with altered inhibitory mechanisms are poorly understood. In this thesis work AMPA receptor pharmacology, trafficking and synaptic localization was studied using patch-clamp electrophysiology. Both native and recombinant AMPA receptors were studied. Hippocampal slices from transgenic Thy1alfa6 mice with altered inhibition were used to study adaptation of AMPA receptors. Ethanol was found to inhibit AMPA receptor function by increasing desensitization of the receptor, as the steady-state current was inhibited more than the peak current. Ethanol inhibition was reduced when cyclothiazide was used to block desensitization and when non-desensitizing mutant receptors were studied. Ethanol also increased the rate of desensitization, which was increased further by the coexpression of TARP-proteins. We found that the agonist binding capability is important for trafficking AMPA receptors from endoplasmic reticulum to the cell membrane. TARP rescues the surface expression of non-binding AMPA receptor mutants in HEK293 cells, but not in native neurons. Studies with Thy1alfa6 mice revealed that decreased inhibition decrease AMPA receptor mediated excitation keeping the neurotransmission in balance. Thy1alfa6 mice also had lower sensitivity to electroshock convulsions, presumably due to the decreased AMPA receptor function. The results suggest that during alcohol intoxication ethanol may inhibit AMPA receptors by increasing the rate and the extent of desensitization. TARPs appear to enhance ethanol inhibition. TARPs also participate in trafficking of AMPA receptors upon their synthesis in the cell. AMPA receptors mediate also long-term adaptation to altered neuronal excitability, which adds to their well-known role in synaptic plasticity.

The impression creep behaviour of zinc is studied in the range 300 to 500 K and the results are compared with the data from conventional creep tests. The steady-state impression velocity is found to exhibit the same stress and temperature dependence as in conventional tensile creep with the same power law stress exponent. Also studied is the effect of indenter size on the impression velocity. The thermal activation parameters for plastic flow at high temperatures derived from a number of testing techniques agree reasonably well. Grain boundary sliding is shown to be unimportant in controlling the rate of plastic flow at high temperatures. It is observed that the Cottrell-Stokes law is obeyed during high-temperature deformation of zinc. It is concluded that a mechanism such as forest intersection involving attractive trees controls the high-temperature flow rather than a diffusion mechanism.

The phenomenological theory of hemispherical growth is generalised to time-dependent nucleation and growth-rates. Special cases, which include models with diffusion-controlled rates, are analysed. Expressions are obtained for small and large time behaviour and peak characteristics of potentiostatic transients, and their use in model parameter estimation is discussed. Two earlier equations are corrected. Numerically calculated transients which are presented exhibit some interesting features such as a maximum preceding the steady state, oscillations and shoulder.

Various field test (namely vibration tests on blocks or plates, steady-state vibration or Rayleigh wave tests, wave propagation tests, and cyclic load tests) were conducted at a number of sites in India to determine the dynamic shear modulus, G. Data obtained at different sites are described. The values of G obtained from the different tests at a given site vary widely. The rational approach for selecting the value of G from field tests for use in the analysis and design of soil-structure interaction problems under dynamic loads must account for the factors affecting G. The suggested approach, which provides a possible answer, is suitable in cohesionless soils below the water table where it is rather difficult, if not impossible, to obtain undisturbed samples.
