The presence of carbon in primitive extraterrestrial materials has long been considered a useful indicator of prevailing geochemical conditions early in the formation of the Solar System. A recent addition to the suite of primitive materials available for study by cosmochemists includes particles collected from the stratosphere called chondritic porous (CP) aggregates1. Carbon-rich CP aggregates are less abundant in stratospheric collections and contain many low-temperature phases (such as layer silicates) as minor components2,3. We describe here the nature of the most abundant carbon phase in a carbon-rich CP aggregate (sample no. W7029* A) collected from the stratosphere as part of the Johnson Space Center (JSC) Cosmic Dust Program4. By comparison with experimental and terrestrial studies of poorly graphitized carbon (PGC), we show that the graphitization temperature, or the degree of ordering in the PGC, may provide a useful cosmothermometer for primitive extraterrestrial materials.

A new set of primitive extraterrestrial materials collected in the Earth's stratosphere include Chondritic Porous Aggregates (CPA's) [1]. CPAs have a complex and variable mineralogy [1-3] that include 'organic compounds' [4,5] and poorly graphitised carbon (PGC)[6]. This study presents a continuation of our detailed Analytical Electron Microscope study on carbon-rich CPA W7029*A from the JSC Cosmic Dust Collection. This CPA is an uncontaminated sample that survived atmospheric entry without appreciable alteration [7] and which contains ~44% carbonaceous material. The carbonaceous composition of selected particles was confirmed by Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy and Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED). Possible carbonaceous contaminants introduced by specimen preparation techniques are easily recognised from indigenous CPA carbon particles [8] and do not bias our interpretations.

YBa2Cu3O7-δ - 25mol%Y2BaCuO5 bars and thick films have been melt textured using a stationary furnace with a temperature gradient of 3 or 6°C/cm. Samples are heated above the peritectic reaction temperature and quenched to just above the solidification temperature and then slowly cooled below the solidification temperature. All bar shaped samples consist of 2-5 mm grains though the grain orientations strongly depend on the heat treatment conditions. The bar shows the maximum Jc of above 3,000 A/cm2, whereas the maximum Jc of 200 A/cm2 and Tczero of 88K are obtained for the thick film on (100) LaAlO3 single crystal.

Nanoscale MgO powder was synthesized from magnesite ore by a wet chemical method. Acid dissolution was used to obtain a solution from which magnesium containing complexes were precipitated by either oxalic acid or ammonium hydroxide, The transformation of precipitates to the oxide was monitored by thermal analysis and XRD and the transformed powders were studied by electron microscopy. The MgO powders were added as dopants to Bi2SrCa2CuO8 powders and high temperature superconductor thick films were deposited on silver. Addition of suitable MgO powder resulted in increase of critical current density, J(c), from 8,900 Acm(-2) to 13,900 Acm(-2) measured at 77 K and 0 T. The effect of MgO addition was evaluated by XRD, electron microscopy and critical current density measurements. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

The microstructure of YBa2Cu3O7-delta (Y-123) materials partially-melted in air and quenched from the temperature range 900-1100 degrees C, has been characterized using a combination of X-ray diffractometry, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe analyses, transmission electron microscopy and energy and wave dispersive X-ray spectrometries. The microstructural studies reveal significant changes in the character of the quenched partial-melt as a function of temperature and time before quenching. BaCu2O2 and BaCuO2 are found to co-exist in stoichiometric samples quenched from the temperature range 920-960 degrees C. Under suitable cooling conditions, large pockets of melt cristallize as BaCuO2 with an exsolution of BaCu2O2 in the form of thin plates (approximate to 50-100 nm thick) along facets. Y2BaCuO5 (Y-211) additions are associated with the formation of BaCu2O2 at 1100 degrees C. Preliminary results on the effects of PtO2 and CeO2 additions to Y-123 (and Y-123 with Y-211 additions) show that these enhace the formation of BaCu2O2 at the melting temperature of 1100 degrees C. Vesicular and groundmass phyllosilicates in a hydrothermally altered basalt from the Point Sal ophiolite, California, have been studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Pore-filling phyllosilicates are texturally characterized as having coherent, relatively thick and defect-free crystals of chlorite (14 Å) with occasional 24-Å periodicities. Groundmass phyllosilicates are texturally characterized as 1) randomly oriented crystals up to 200 Å in width and 2) larger, more coherent crystals up to 1000 Å in width. Small crystallites contain predominantly 14-Å layers with some 24-Å units. Large crystals show randomly interlayered chlorite/smectite (C/S), with approximately 50% chlorite on average. Adjacent smectite-like layers are not uncommon in the groundmass phyllosilicates. Electron microprobe analyses show that Fe/Mg ratios of both groundmass and vesicular phyllosilicates are fairly constant. Termination of brucite-like interlayers has been identified in some of the TEM images. The transformation mechanisms represented by these layer terminations are 1) growth of a brucite-like interlayer within smectite interlayer regions and 2) the dissolution and reprecipitation of elements to form chlorite layers. Both mechanisms require an increase in volume as smectite transforms to chlorite. The data, combined with that from previously published reports, suggest that randomly interlayered C/S is a metastable phase formed in microenvironments with low water/rock ratios. Chlorite forms in microenvironments in the same sample dominated by higher water/rock ratios. The relatively constant number of Mg's in the structure (Mg#) of both structures indicates that in both microenvironments the bulk rock composition has influence over the composition of phyllosilicates.

The microstructure of YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) materials, melt-textured in air and quenched from the temperature range 900-990°C, has been characterized using a combination of x-ray diffractometry, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry. BaCu2O2 and BaCuO2 were found to coexist in samples quenched from the temperature range 920-960°C. The formation of BaCu2O2 preceded the formation of YBCO. Once the YBCO had formed, BaCu2O2 was present at the solidification front filling the space between nearly parallel platelets of YBCO. Large Y2BaCuO5 particles at the solidification front appeared divided into smaller ones as a result of their dissolution in the liquid that quenched as BaCu2O2.

The structure and composition of reaction products between Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-oxide (BSCCO) thick films and alumina substrates have been characterized using a combination of electron diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX). Sr and Ca are found to be the most reactive cations with alumina. Sr4Al6O12SO4 is formed between the alumina substrates and BSCCO thick films prepared from paste with composition close to Bi-2212 (and Bi-2212 + 10 wt.% Ag). For paste with composition close to Bi(Pb)-2223 + 20 wt.% Ag, a new phase with f.c.c. structure, lattice parameter about a = 24.5 A and approximate composition Al3Sr2CaBi2CuOx has been identified in the interface region. Understanding and control of these reactions is essential for growth of high quality BSCCO thick films on alumina. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

The microstructure of Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-oxide (BSCCO) thick films on alumina substrates has been characterized using a combination of X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy of sections across the film/substrate interface and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry. A reaction layer formed between the BSCCO films and the alumina substrates. This chemical interaction is largely responsible for off-stoichiometry of the films and is more significant after partial melting of the films. A new phase with fee structure, lattice parameter a = 2.45 nm and approximate composition Al3Sr2CaBi2CuOx has been identified as reaction product between BSCCO and Al2O3.

Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have been used to compare samples of YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) synthesised by the solid-state method and a novel co-precipitation technique. XRD results indicate that YBCO prepared by these two methods are phase pure, however the Raman and SEM results show marked differences between these samples.

A co-precipitation process is utilized to manufacture Y2Cu2O5 precursor powders. Upon calcination at high temperatures, such as 800 degrees C, the co-precipitated powder transforms to Y2Cu2O5. By selective variation of calcination parameters, grain-growth can be controlled to yield different sized Y2Cu2O5 powder, including sub-micron average sizes. ICP analysis, X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, a.c. magnetic susceptibility and FT Raman are used to characterize phase development, morphology and purity of the powders.

A co-precipitation process for large-scale manufacture of bismuth-based HTSC powders has been demonstrated. Powders manufactured by this process have a high phase purity and precisely reproducible stoichiometry. Controlled time and temperature variations are used to convert precursors to HTSC compounds and to obtain specific particle-size distributions. The process has been demonstrated for a variety of compositions in the BSCCO system. Electron microscopy X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy and magnetic-susceptibility measurements are used to characterize the powders.

An Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM) has been used to investigate the freshwater sensitivity of secondary corrensite (regularly interstratified chlorite/smectite) and chlorite-rich chlorite/smectite in order to determine whether hydrocarbon reservoirs hosting these clays should be regarded as freshwater sensitive. ESEM experiments involved an examination and close comparison of selected clay areas in three samples at high magnification before, during and after prolonged freshwater treatments. Corrensite and chlorine/smectite in the samples did not visibly swell when immersed in fresh water. After soaking in fresh water for up to three months, these clays retained their original morphology and associated porosity. Hence, the presence of corrensite or chlorite/smectite in a hydrocarbon reservoir need not indicate that the reservoir is freshwater sensitive. © 1994.

Bulk and size-fractionated kaolinites from seven localities in Australia as well as the Clay Minerals Society Source Clays Georgia KGa-1 and KGa-2 have been studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), laser scattering, and electron microscopy in order to understand the variation of particle characteristics across a range of environments and to correlate specific particle characteristics with intercalation behavior. All kaolinites have been intercalated with N-methyl formamide (NMF) after pretreatment with hydrazine hydrate, and the relative efficiency of intercalation has been determined using XRD. Intercalate yields of kaolinite: NMF are consistently low for bulk samples that have a high proportion of small-sized particles (i.e., <0.5 µm) and for biphased kaolinites with a high percentage (>60%) of low-defect phase. In general, particle size appears to be a more significant controlling factor than defect distribution in determining the relative yield of kaolinite: NMF intercalate.
