Protein molecular motors, which are natural nano-machines that convert the chemical energy into mechanical work for cellular motion, muscle contraction and cell division, have been integrated in the last decade in primitive nanodevices based on the motility of nano-biological objects in micro- and nano-fabricated structures. However, the motility of microorganisms powered by molecular motors has not been similarly exploited. Moreover, among the proposed devices based on molecular motors, i.e., nanosensors, nano-mechanical devices and nano-imaging devices, biocomputation devices are conspicuously missing. The present contribution discusses, based on the present state of the art nano- and micro-fabrication, the comparative advantages and disadvantages of using nano- and micro-biological objects in future computation devices. In ionic liquids [Bmim][PF6] or [Bmim][BF4], pyrrole replaced the halogen atom of an alkyl halide to give the corresponding N-substituted pyrrole in excellent yield. Benzenesulfonyl chloride, p-methylbenzenesulfonyl chloride and benzoyl chloride reacted similarly with pyrroles to afford the N-substituted pyrroles in quantitative yield. Michael addition reaction of pyrrole with electrophilic olefins was completed in a highly regioselective manner to afford the N-alkylpyrroles.

A comprehensive and highly illustrated text providing a broad and invaluable overview of sensory systems at the molecular, cellular and neurophysiological level of vertebrates, invertebrates and prokaryotes. It retains a strong focus on human systems, and takes an evolutionary and comparative approach to review the mechanosenses, chemosenses, photosenses, and other sensory systems including those for detecting pain, temperature electric and magnetic fields etc. It incorporates exciting and significant new insights provided by molecular biology which demonstrate how similar the molecular architecture and physiology of sensory cells are across species and across sensory modality, often indicationg a common ancestry dating back over half a billion years. Written by a renowned author, with extensive teaching experience in the biology of sensory systems, this book includes: - Over 400 illustrations - Self–assessment questions - Full bibliography preceded by short bibliographical essays - Boxes containing useful supplementary material. It will be invaluable for undergraduates and postgraduates studying biology, zoology, animal physiology, neuroscience, anatomy, molecular biology, physiological psychology and related courses.

This edition of the popular text incorporates recent advances in neurobiology enabled by modern molecular biology techniques. Understanding how the brain works from a molecular level allows research to better understand behaviours, cognition, and neuropathologies. Since the appearance six years ago of the second edition, much more has been learned about the molecular biology of development and its relations with early evolution. This "evodevo" (as it has come to be known) framework also has a great deal of bearing on our understanding of neuropathologies as dysfunction of early onset genes can cause neurodegeneration in later life. Advances in our understanding of the genomes and proteomes of a number of organisms also greatly influence our understanding of neurobiology. This book will be of particular interest to biomedical undergraduates undertaking a neuroscience unit, neuroscience postgraduates, physiologists, pharmacologists. It is also a useful basic reference for university libraries.

A new family of multifunctional scaffolds, incorporating selected biopolymer coatings on basic Bioglass® derived foams has been developed. The polymer coatings were investigated as carrier of vancomycin which is a suitable drug to impart antibiotic function to the scaffolds. It has been proved that coating with PLGA (poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)) with dispersed vancomycin-loaded microgels provides a rapid delivery of drug to give antibacterial effects at the wound site and a further sustained release to aid mid to long-term healing. Furthermore, the microgels also improved the bioactivity of the scaffolds by acting as nucleation sites for the formation of HA crystals in simulated body fluid. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. The deoxidation of steel with complex deoxidisers was studied at 1550°C and compared with silicon, aluminium and silicon/aluminium alloys as standards. The deoxidation alloy systems, Ca/Si/Al, Mg/Si/Al and Mn/Si/Al, were chosen for the low liquidus temperatures of many of their oxide mixtures and the potential deoxidising power of their constituent elements. Product separation rates and compositional relationships following deoxidation were examined. Silicon/aluminium alloy deoxidation resulted in the product compositions and residual oxygen contents expected from equilibrium and stoichiometric considerations, but with the Ca/Si/Al and Mg/Si/Al alloys the volatility of calcium and magnesium prevented them participating in the final solute equilibrium, despite their reported solubility in liquid iron. Electron-probe microanalysis of the products showed various concentrations of lime and magnesia, possibly resulting from reaction between the metal vapours and dissolved oxygen. The consequent reduction of silica activity in the products due to the presence of CaO and hgO produced an indirect effect of calcium and magnesium on the residual oxygen content. Product separation rates, indicated by vacuum fusion analyses, were not significantly influenced by calcium and magnesium but the rapid separation of products having a high Al2O3Si02 ratio was confirmed. Manganese participated in deoxidation, when present either as an alloying element in the steel or as a deoxidation alloy constituent. The compositions of initial oxide products were related to deoxidation alloy compositions. Separated products which were not alumina saturated, dissolved crucible material to achieve saturation. The melt equilibrated with this slag and crucible by diffusion to determine the residual oxygen content. MnO and SiO2 activities were calculated, and the approximate values of MnO deduced for the compositions obtained. Separation rates were greater for products of high interfacial tension. The rates calculated from a model based on Stoke's Law, showed qualitative agreement with experimental data when corrected for coalescence effects.

Pre-eclampsia, a pregnancy-specific multi-organ syndrome characterized by widespread endothelial damage, is a new risk factor for cardiovascular disease. No therapies exist to prevent or treat this condition, even to achieve a modest improvement in pregnancy length or birth weight. Co-administration of soluble VEGFR-1 [VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) receptor-1; more commonly known as sFlt-1 (soluble Fms-like tyrosine kinase-1)] and sEng (soluble endoglin) to pregnant rats elicits severe pre-eclampsia-like symptoms. These two anti-angiogenic factors are increased dramatically prior to the clinical onset of pre-eclampsia and are quite possibly the 'final common pathway' responsible for the accompanying signs of hypertension and proteinuria as they can be reversed by VEGF administration in animal models. HO-1 (haem oxygenase-1), an anti-inflammatory enzyme, and its metabolite, CO (carbon monoxide), exert protective effects in several organs against oxidative stimuli. In a landmark publication, we showed that the HO-1 pathway inhibits sFlt-1 and sEng in cultured cells and human placental tissue explants. Both CO and NO (nitric oxide) promote vascular homoeostasis and vasodilatation, and activation of VEGFR-1 or VEGFR-2 induced eNOS (endothelial nitric oxide synthase) phosphorylation, NO release and HO-1 expression. Our studies established the HO-1/CO pathway as a negative regulator of cytokine-induced sFlt-1 and sEng release and eNOS as a positive regulator of VEGF-mediated vascular morphogenesis. These findings provide compelling evidence for a protective role of HO-1 in pregnancy and identify it as a target for the treatment of pre-eclampsia. Any agent that is known to up-regulate HO-1, such as statins, may have potential as a therapy. Any intervention achieving even a modest prolongation of pregnancy or amelioration of the condition could have a significant beneficial health impact worldwide.

Various room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), notably, 1-methoxyethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoroacetate [MeOEtMIM]+[CF3COO]ˉ , have been used to promote the Knoevenagel condensation to afford substituted olefins. All reactions proceeded effectively in the absence of any other catalysts or co-solvents with good to excellent yields. This method is simple and applicable to reactions involving a wide range of aldehydes and ketones with methylene compounds. The ionic liquid can be recycled without noticeable reduction of its catalytic activity. A plausible reaction mechanism is proposed.
