The problem of parameterizing approximately algebraic curves and surfaces is an active research field, with many implications in practical applications. The problem can be treated locally or globally. We formally state the problem, in its global version for the case of algebraic curves (planar or spatial), and we report on some algorithms approaching it, as well as on the associated error distance analysis.

ABSTRACT. The final degree project "Portable Measurement System For Devices Under Field Tests" is a project undertaken for the development and evaluation of portable and reliable measurement equipment, which allows the realization of I-V curve measurements in field conditions actual operation. Since the purpose of this final project is to obtain a system for conducting field measurements in the implementation of the project will have as main design requirements for size, power supply, system weight, plus reliability and precision relative to the taking of measurements. During the development of this project and given the above requirements portability and reliability, has sought to offer a compromise designing equipment that is achievable, that meets the above objectives with a cost that is not high and the feature that available management facility that allows any user to use it. The final system is designed based on the acquisition device MyDAQ NI data that allows the execution of multiple types of measurements. Based on this data acquisition device, we have designed a measurement system with an architecture that is implemented via a laptop, with measurement software installed that collects and interprets data, and feeds and controls the device through the USB port. The system also implements a variable load which allows measurement of the I-V curve lighting photovoltaic cells. This design allows performing measurements of I-V curves in lighting field is only required to connect the device to purchase a laptop with a battery and variable load. Although this design is specific for the measurement of solar cells has been implemented so that it can easily be extrapolated to other types of measuring voltage and current. To test the accuracy of the portable measurement system during the project has been carried out to compare the results of the designed system, a team of laboratory characterization. This system of high accuracy to quantify the actual degradation of the cell and a comparison of measurements with portable measurement system, providing satisfactory results in all measurements and allowing complete portable system assessment as suitable for measurements of devices field. The evaluation process designed equipment would be far laboratory I-V curve of a photovoltaic device with high precision instrumentation controlled light and temperature of a device, panel or mini-cell conditions. After initial measurement cells settle in a periodic field and device characterization will be achieved through the portable measurement system, which would show whether the I-V curve under illumination degradation exists, and in which area of the curve. At the end of the trial or in interim periods devices to remeasure the I-V curve accurately in laboratory dismount. Therefore the portable measurement system should allow evaluating the evolution of the I-V curve similar to previous measurements obtained in ambient conditions, and from it determine the mode of degradation of the device, not a high measurement accuracy to be necessary to provide degradation accurate results, which can only be measured in the laboratory.

With the widespread use of the World Wide Web, there has been a huge increase in virus attacks, making the computer security essential for all computers. Near areas of research have append in this area including classifying malware into families, Malware developers use polymorphism to generate new variants of existing malware. Thus it is crucial to group variants of the same family, to study their characteristics and to detect new variants. This work, in addition to presenting a detailed analysis of the problem of classifying malware PE executable files, presents an approach in which the classification in the Malware database MALICIA is improved by using static characteristics of executable files, namely Imphash and Pehash. Both features are evaluated through clustering real malware with family labels with aggressive clustering algorithm and combining this with the current classification by Majority voting algorithm, obtaining a Precision of 99.15% and a Recall of 99.32%, improving the classification of MALICIA with an F-measure of 99,23%.

The purpose of this study was to compare a number of state-of-the-art methods in airborne laser scan- ning (ALS) remote sensing with regards to their capacity to describe tree size inequality and other indi- cators related to forest structure. The indicators chosen were based on the analysis of the Lorenz curve: Gini coefficient ( GC ), Lorenz asymmetry ( LA ), the proportions of basal area ( BALM ) and stem density ( NSLM ) stocked above the mean quadratic diameter. Each method belonged to one of these estimation strategies: (A) estimating indicators directly; (B) estimating the whole Lorenz curve; or (C) estimating a complete tree list. Across these strategies, the most popular statistical methods for area-based approach (ABA) were used: regression, random forest (RF), and nearest neighbour imputation. The latter included distance metrics based on either RF (NN–RF) or most similar neighbour (MSN). In the case of tree list esti- mation, methods based on individual tree detection (ITD) and semi-ITD, both combined with MSN impu- tation, were also studied. The most accurate method was direct estimation by best subset regression, which obtained the lowest cross-validated coefficients of variation of their root mean squared error CV(RMSE) for most indicators: GC (16.80%), LA (8.76%), BALM (8.80%) and NSLM (14.60%). Similar figures [CV(RMSE) 16.09%, 10.49%, 10.93% and 14.07%, respectively] were obtained by MSN imputation of tree lists by ABA, a method that also showed a number of additional advantages, such as better distributing the residual variance along the predictive range. In light of our results, ITD approaches may be clearly inferior to ABA with regards to describing the structural properties related to tree size inequality in for- ested areas.

When applying computational mathematics in practical applications, even though one may be dealing with a problem that can be solved algorithmically, and even though one has good algorithms to approach the solution, it can happen, and often it is the case, that the problem has to be reformulated and analyzed from a different computational point of view. This is the case of the development of approximate algorithms. This paper frames in the research area of approximate algebraic geometry and commutative algebra and, more precisely, on the problem of the approximate parametrization.

A crop management and precision agriculture software application facilitates the flow of information between disparate software/equipment and the network of individuals that work with them. A new generation of farmers are using precision technology to help them more efficiently manage their roplands. By measuring precisely the way their fields reflect and emit energy at visible and infrared wavelengths, precision farmers can monitor a wide range of variables that affect their crops, such as soil moisture, surface temperature, photosynthetic activity, and weed or pest infestations. Over thirty years have passed since Nelson and Winter put the concept of routines firmly at the center of the analysis of organizational and economic change. Taken as the central unit of analysis, routines would help understand energy and agriculture economy evolution.

This paper is framed within the problem of analyzing the rationality of the components of two classical geometric constructions, namely the offset and the conchoid to an algebraic plane curve and, in the affirmative case, the actual computation of parametrizations. We recall some of the basic definitions and main properties on offsets (see [13]), and conchoids (see [15]) as well as the algorithms for parametrizing their rational components (see [1] and [16], respectively). Moreover, we implement the basic ideas creating two packages in the computer algebra system Maple to analyze the rationality of conchoids and offset curves, as well as the corresponding help pages. In addition, we present a brief atlas where the offset and conchoids of several algebraic plane curves are obtained, their rationality analyzed, and parametrizations are provided using the created packages.

This Final Thesis arises from the need for technologies that facilitate the Natural Language Processing (NLP) in Spanish in the medical sector. Specifically it is focused on extracting knowledge from Electronic Health Records (EHR), which contain all the information related to the patient's health and, in particular, it expects to obtain all the terms related to medicine from the documents contained in these records. Natural Language Processing allows us to obtain structured information from unstructured data. These techniques enable analysis of text generating labels providing semantic meaning to words for handling information. From the investigation of the state of the art in NLP and existing technologies in other languages, an annotation module of medical terms extracted from clinical documents is proposed as a solution. Symptoms, diseases, body parts or treatments are considered part of the medical terms contained in UMLS ontology which is categorized joining different sources of medical data. This project has completed the design and implementation of a module and the analysis of the results have been obtained. Thirty two documents which contain 1372 mentions of medical terminology have been evaluated and the average results obtained are: Precision: 70.4% Recall: 36.2% Accuracy: 31.4% and F-Measure: 47.2%.

---ABSTRACT--- New information technologies have emerged in the recent years which explore the processing of the huge amount of existing digital data and its transformation into knowledge. Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques are able to extract certain features from digital texts. Additionally, through machine learning techniques it is feasible to classify instances according to different categories, learning from others previously classified. Clinical texts contain great amount of unstructured data, therefore information not fully exploited. Some terms (tokens) in clinical texts appear in different situations such as affirmed, negated, hypothetic or historic. Detecting this situation is necessary for the structuring of this data, however not simple. It is possible to detect whether if a token is negated, affirmed, hypothetic or historic by extracting its linguistic features by NLP; transforming these tokens into instances, the features into attributes, and classifying these instances through machine learning techniques. Selecting the attributes each instance must have, and choosing the machine learning algorithm are crucial issues for the classification. In fact, these elements set the classification model. Consequently, this work approaches the features retrieval as well as the attributes and algorithm selection process used by machine learning techniques for the detection of negation in clinical texts in Spanish. We present a classification model which, through J48 algorithm and 35 attributes from linguistic features (morphologic and syntactic) and negation triggers, detects whether if a token is negated in 465 sentences from historical records, with a result of 73% FScore, 66% recall and 81% precision using a 10-fold cross-validation.

Ligand-specific molecular switches composed of RNA were created by coupling preexisting catalytic and receptor domains via structural bridges. Binding of ligand to the receptor triggers a conformational change within the bridge, and this structural reorganization dictates the activity of the adjoining ribozyme. The modular nature of these tripartite constructs makes possible the rapid construction of precision RNA molecular switches that trigger only in the presence of their corresponding ligand. By using similar enzyme engineering strategies, new RNA switches can be made to operate as designer molecular sensors or as a new class of genetic control elements.

What are the limits and modulators of neural precision? We address this question in the most regular biological oscillator known, the electric organ command nucleus in the brainstem of wave-type gymnotiform fish. These fish produce an oscillating electric field, the electric organ discharge (EOD), used in electrolocation and communication. We show here that the EOD precision, measured by the coefficient of variation (CV = SD/mean period) is as low as 2 × 10−4 in five species representing three families that range widely in species and individual mean EOD frequencies (70–1,250 Hz). Intracellular recording in the pacemaker nucleus (Pn), which commands the EOD cycle by cycle, revealed that individual Pn neurons of the same species also display an extremely low CV (CV = 6 × 10−4, 0.8 μs SD). Although the EOD CV can remain at its minimum for hours, it varies with novel environmental conditions, during communication, and spontaneously. Spontaneous changes occur as abrupt steps (250 ms), oscillations (3–5 Hz), or slow ramps (10–30 s). Several findings suggest that these changes are under active control and depend on behavioral state: mean EOD frequency and CV can change independently; CV often decreases in response to behavioral stimuli; and lesions of one of the two inputs to the Pn had more influence on CV than lesions of the other input.
