Gas transport properties of home- and copolyimides prepared from 3,3',4,4'- and 2,2',3,3'-thiaphthalic dianhydride (p-TDPA and m-TDPA, respectively) with 4,4-oxydianiline (ODA) were investigated. The fractional free volume of m-TDPA-ODA is larger than that of p-TDPA-ODA, and the chain segmental mobility of the former is lower than that of the latter. The permeability coefficients of m-TDPA-ODA to H-2, CO2, and O-2 are more increased by 48, 69 and 75%, at 30 degrees C and 10 atm, respectively, than those of p-TDPA-ODA; but the permselectivities of m-TDPA-ODA for H-2, CO2, and O-2 toward N-2 are more decreased by 33, 77, and 26%, respectively, than those of p-TDPA-ODA. The permeability coefficients and the diffusion coefficients of the copolyimides can be described by the following equations: log P = Phi(p) log P-p + Phi(m), log P-m and log D-a = D-a = Phi(p) log(D-alpha)(p) + Phi(m) log(D-a)(m), respectively. The variation of the permselectivity is controlled predominantly by diffusivity selectivity. These observations are interpreted in terms of variations in the fractional free volume of polyimides. This work deals with the effect of compatibilizer on the morphological, thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties of polypropylene/polycarbonate (PP/ PC) blends. The blends, containing between 0 to 30 vol % of polycarbonate and a compatibilizer, were prepared by means of a twin-screw extruder. The compatibilizer was produced by grafting glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto polypropylene in the molten state. Blend morphologies were controlled by adding PP-g-GMA as compatibilizer during melt processing, thus changing dispersion and interfacial adhesion of the polycarbonate phase. With PP-g-GMA, volume fractions increased from 2.5 to 20, and much finer dispersions of discrete polycarbonate phase with average domain sizes decreased from 35 to 3 mu m were obtained. The WAXD spectra showed that the crystal structure of neat PP was different from that in blends. The DSC results suggested that the degree of crystallization of PP in blends decreased as PC content and compatibilizer increased. The mechanical properties significantly changed after addition of PP-g-GMA. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The overall isothermal crystallization kinetics for neat polypropylene and grafted polypropylene systems were investigated. The rate constants were corrected assuming the heterogeneous nucleation and three dimensional growth of polypropylene spherulites. A semiempirical equation for the radial growth rate of polypropylene spherulites was developed as a function of temperature, and was used to determine the number of effective nuclei of different temperatures. The number of nuclei in grafted samples was estimated to be 10(2)-10(3) times larger than that of neat polypropylene. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Grafting of acrylamido tertiary butyl sulfonic acid (ATBS) onto ethylene-polypropylene copolymer (EPM) was carried out by using a reactive processing method. The grafting copolymer was characterized by means of WAXD, FT-IR, ESCA, and DSC. Improved thermal stability was observed for graft copolymer. Effects of the monomer and the initiator concentrations, reactive temperature, and time on grafting degree were investigated. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The polycrystalline powder of para- and meta-dimethyl ester of pyromellitic acid (PMDE) have been prepared by fractional crystallization, and their crystal structures have been determined by Wide-Angle X-ray Diffraction (WAXD). Both p-PMDE and m-PMDE was found to be orthorhombic crystal system, and their unit cell parameters a = 0.840 nm, b = 0.707 nm, c = 1.136 nm and a = 1.032 nm; b = 0.835 nm, c = 0.714 nm, respectively. Space group all belongs to P-mmm. p-PMDE has two molecules per unit cell with crystal density 1.388 g . cm(-3), while m-PMDE has two molecules per unit cell with crystal density 1.522 g . cm(-3). Indices of crystal diffraction peaks are also detailed in the present work. The difference in crystal structures between p-PMDE and m-PMDE has thus been used to explain the curing behavior of isomerically pyromellitic dianhydride-based poly(amic ester)s.

Novel high glass transition temperature polyaryletherketones, containing pendant amido, alkyl, and carboxyl groups with reduced viscosity above 0.54 dL/g, were synthesized via solution nucleophilic polycondensation reaction of phenolphthalin, 2',2 ''-diisopropyl-5',5 ''-dimethylphenolphthalin, and 3,3'-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)isobenzopyrrolidone with bis(4-nitrophenyl)ketone in the presence of potassium carbonate. By ion exchange with Na+ and K+, four ionomers were also prepared. A new monomer simultaneously containing carboxyl and algyl substituents was synthesized by reduction reaction of 2',2 ''-diisopropyl-5',5 ''-dimethyl-phenolphthalein. The resulting polymers were soluble in a few polar aprotic solvents; transparent, colorless, and tough films could easily be cast from DMF or DMSO solution. The mechanical properties of the films were excellent; and their tensile strength, elongation at break, and tensile moduli were in the range of 67.1-97.1 MPa, 7.8-165%, and 1.47-2.27 GPa, respectively. The prepared polymers showed fairly good thermal stability and resonably high glass transition temperatures above 210 degrees C. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The microphase transition in a styrene-butadiene-styrene triblock copolymer was studied by rheometric mechanical spectroscopy. A high-temperature-melt rheological transition from the highly elastic, nonlinear viscous behavior typical of a multiphase structure to linear viscous behavior with insignificant elasticity typical of a single-phase structure was observed. The transition temperature is determined according to the discontinuity of the rheological properties across the transition region, which agrees well with the results obtained from the small angle X-ray scattering data and the expectation of the random phase approximation theory. Maybe for the first time, microphase dissolution was investigated theologically. The storage modulus (G') and the loss modulus (G '') increase with time during the process. An entanglement fluctuation model based on the segmental density fluctuations is presented to explain the rheological behavior in this dissolution process. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons.

Poly(ether diphenyl ether ketone) (PEDEK) synthesized by the nucleophilic route has the following chemical structure: [GRAPHICS] At some given temperatures for a given time isothermally crystallized PEDEK sample exhibits two endothermic peaks which are similar to PEEK and PEEKK The melting behavior of PEDEK crystallized from the glassy state is investigated through differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). We consider that the high-melting peak is related to the perfect crystals and the low-melting peak is associated with a few imperfect crystals. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The synthesis and characterization of a series of poly(amic methyl ester)s from five aromatic dianhydrides and a diamine, 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA), are described. These poly(amic ester)s are obtained by the low-temperature polycondensation from dianhydrides derived diester-diacyl chlorides and ODA in DMAc solution with the inherent viscosities in the 0.5-0.9 dL/g range. These precursors are readily soluble in aprotic solvents. A detailed thermal study of the imidization process is presented, based on dynamic and isothermal TGA measurements, FTIR spectroscopy, and dynamic mechanical analysis. Two unfractionated samples of phenolphthalein poly( aryl ether sulfone) (PES-C) were characterized in CHCl3 at 25 degrees C by applying a recently developed laser light-scattering (LLS) procedure. The Laplace inversion of precisely measured intensity-intensity time correlation function lead us first to an estimate of the characteristic line-width distribution G(Gamma) and then to the translational diffusion coefficient distribution G(D). A combination of static and dynamic LLS results enabled us to determine D = (2.69 x 10(-4))M(-0.553), which agrees with the calibration of D = (2.45 x 10(-4))M(-0.55) previously established by a set of narrowly distributed PES-C samples. Using this newly obtained scaling between D and M, we were able to convert G(D) into a differential weight distribution f(w)(M) for the two PES-C samples. The weight-average molecular weights calculated from f(w)(M) are comparable to that obtained directly from static LLS. Our results showed that using two broadly distributed samples instead of a set of narrowly distributed samples have provided not only similar final results, but also a more practical method for the PES-C characterization. The gas transport properties of a series polyetherimides, which were prepared from 1,4-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzene dianhydride (HQDPA) with 1,3-phenylenediamine or 3,5-diaminobenzic acid (DBA) or its esters are reported. The effects of carboxylic group (-COOH) and carboxylic ether groups (-COOR), at five positions of 1,3-phenylenediamine moiety, on H-2, CO2, O-2, and N-2 permeability, diffusivity, and solubility of the polyetherimides were investigated. The gas permeability, diffusion, and solubility coefficients of the polyetherimides containing COOR are bigger than those of HQDPA-PDA, but the ideal separation factors and ideal diffusivity selectivity factors are much smaller than that of HQDPA-PDA because COOR decreases chain segmental packing efficiency and increases chain segmental mobility. The permeability coefficients of HQDPA-DBA to H-2, CO2, and O-2 are bigger than those of HQDPA-PDA; the ideal separation factors for gas pairs H-2/N-2, CO2/N-2, and O-2/N-2 are also much bigger than those of HQDPA-PDA. Both the diffusion coefficients of CO2 and O-2 and the ideal diffusivity selectivity factors for CO2/N-2 and O-2/N-2 are bigger than those of HQDPA-PDA because COOH decreases both chain segmental packing efficiency and chain segmental mobility. The copolyimides, which were prepared from 3,5-diaminobenzic acid and 3,5-diaminobenzic esters, have both high permeability and high permselectivity. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The structural parameters of the aggregated state of polyamide (PA)-1010 annealed at various temperatures were computed by means of the desmearing intensity from Smalt Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) measurements and by using the concept of the distance distribution function. The results indicated that the structural parameters of the aggregated state were strongly dependent upon heat treatment conditions and the maximum values of the structural parameters were obtained for the samples annealed at T = 175 degrees C. The particle size Z annealed at different temperature was ranged between 8.1-12.8nm, and the values of the distance distribution function P-max(Z) were obtained when Z = 4.0-6.8 nm. Using one dimension electron density correlation function (1D EDCF) method long period (L) and thickness of the lamellar (d(0)) were estimated and were found to increase with the increase of the degree of crystallinity.

The thermal properties of ethylene-propylene copolymer grafted with glycidyl methacrylate (EP-g-GMA) were investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Compared to the plain ethylene-propylene copolymer (EP), peak values of melting temperature (T-m) of the propylene sequences in the grafted EP changed a little, crystallization temperature (T-c) increased about 8-12 degrees C, and melting enthalpy (Delta H-m) increased about 4-6 J/g. The isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of grafted and ungrafted samples was carried out by DSC. Within the scope of the researched crystallization temperature, the Avrami exponent (n) of ungrafted sample is 1.6-1.8, and those of grafted samples are all above 2. The crystallization rates of propylene sequence in EP-g-GMA were faster than that in the plain EP and increased with increasing of grafted monomer content. It might be attributed to the results of rapid nucleation rate. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The viscoelastic behavior of phenolphthalein poly(ether ketone) (PEK-C) and its relationship to yielding was studied. The following phenomena were observed: (1) The relaxation behavior at strain near yield closely approximated that at low strain but near the T-g; (2) the temperature and strain rate dependence of yield stress could be modeled by the one-process Eyring theory and the value of the activation volume was the same as that of the glass transition; and (3) according to the Zhurkov-Bueche equation, the cu transition was related to the yield behavior. All these results indicated that the glass transition was the main factor that controlled the yield behavior. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Noncompatibilized and compatibilized blends of nylon 1010/PP blends having five different viscosity ratios were prepared by melt extrusion. Glycidyl methacrylate-grafted-polypropylene (PP-g-GMA) was used as the compatibilizer to enbance the adhesion between the two polymers and to stabilize the blend morphology. The effect of the viscosity ratio on the morphology of nylon 1010/polypropylene blends was investigated, with primary attention to the phase-inversion behavior and the average particle size of the dispersed phase. The relationship between the mechanical properties and the phase-inversion composition was investigated as well. Investigation of the morphology of the blends by microscopy indicated that the smaller the viscosity ratio (eta(PP)/eta(PA)) the smaller was the polypropylene concentration at which the phase inversion took place and polypropylene became the continuous phase. The compatibilizer induced a sharp reduction of particle size, but did not have a major effect on the phase-inversion point. An improvement :in the mechanical properties was found when nylon 1010 provided the matrix phase. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
