The ""Ru(P-P)"" unit (P-P = diphosphine) is recognized to be an important core in catalytic species for hydrogenation of unsaturated organic substrates. Thus, in this study we synthesized six new complexes containing this core, including the binuclear complex [(dppb)(CO)Cl(2)Ru-pz-RuCl(2)(CO)(dPPb)] (pz = pyrazine) which can be used as a precursor for the synthesis of cationic carbonyl species of general formula [RuCl(CO)(dppb)(N-N)]PF(6) (N-N = diimine). Complexes with the formula (RuCl(py)(dppb)(N-N)]PF(6) were synthesized by exhaustive electrolysis of these carbonyl compounds or from the precursors [RuCl(2)(dppb)(N-N)]. The new complexes were characterized by microanalysis, conductivity measurements, IR and (31)P{(1)H)} NMR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and X-ray crystallography. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. The reaction Of Cu(ClO(4))(2)center dot 6H(2)O with dimethylglyoxime (H(2)dmg) in a 1:1 mole ratio in aqueous methanol at room temperature affords the dinuclear complex [Cu(2)(mu-Hdmg)(4)] (1). Reaction of 1 with [Cu(bpy)(H(2)O)(2)](ClO(4))(2) (bpy = 2,2`-bipyridine) in a 1:1 mole ratio in aqueous methanol at room temperature yields the tetranuclear complex [Cu(2)(mu-HdMg)(2)(mu-dMg)(2)(bpy)(2)(H(2)O)(2)](ClO(4))(2) (2). The direct reaction of Cu(ClO(4))(2)center dot 6H(2)O with H(2)dmg and bpy in a 2:21 mole ratio in aqueous methanol at room temperature also yields 2 quantitatively. The complexes 1 and 2 were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Unlike the binding in Ni/Co-dmg, two different types of N-O bridging modes during the oxime based metallacycle formation and stacking of square planar units have been identified in these complexes. The neutral dinuclear complex 1 has CuN(4)O coordination spheres and complex 2 consists of a dicationic [Cu(2)(mu-HdMg)(2)(mu-dMg)(2)(bpy)(2)(H(2)O)(2)](2+) unit and two uncoordinated ClO(4)(-) anions having CuN(4)O and CuN(2)O(3) coordination spheres. The two copper(II) ions are at a distance of 3.846(8) angstrom in 1 for the trans out of plane link and at 3.419(10) and 3.684(10) angstrom in 2 for the trans out of plane and cis in plane arrangements, respectively. The average Cu-N(oxime) distances are 1.953 and 1.935 angstrom, respectively. The average basal and apical Cu-N(oxime) distances are 1.945, 2.295 and 2.429 angstrom. The UV-Vis spectra of 2 is similar to the spectrum of the reaction mixture of 1 and [Cu(bpy)(H(2)O)(2)](2+). Variable temperature magnetic properties measurement shows that the interaction between the paramagnetic copper centers in complex I is antiferromagnetic in nature. The EPR spectra of frozen solution of the complexes at 77 K consist of axially symmetric fine-structure transitions (Delta M(S) = 1) and half-field signals (Delta M(S) = 2) at ca. 1600 G, suggesting the presence of appreciable Cu-Cu interactions. A novel poly(p-xylylene), PPX, derivative bearing phenyl side groups was electrochemically synthesized in 85% yield. The polymer, poly(2-phenyl-p-xylylene) (PPPX), presented a major fraction (88%) soluble in common organic solvents. It showed to be thermally resistant up to 140 degrees C. UV-VIS analysis revealed an Egap of similar to 3.0 eV. Gas sensors made from thin films of CSA doped PPPX deposited on interdigitated electrodes exhibited significant changes in electrical conductance upon exposure to five carbonyl compounds: acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde. benzaldehyde, acetone and butanone. Three-dimensional plots of relative response vs. time of half-response vs. time of half-recovery showed good discrimination between the five carbonyl Compounds tested. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. Excited-state dynamics in fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Me(4)phen)(cis-L)](+) (Me(4)phen = 3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, L = 4-styrylpyridine (stpy) or 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe)) were investigated by steady-state and time-resolved techniques. A complex equilibrium among three closely lying excited states, 3IL(cis-L), (3)MLCT(Re -> me4phen), and (3)IL(Me4phen), has been established. Under UV irradiation, cis-to-trans isomerization of coordinated cis-L is observed with a quantum yield of 0.15 in acetonitrile solutions. This photoreaction competes with radiative decay from (3)MLCT(Re -> Me4phen) and (3)IL(Me4phen) excited states, leading to a decrease in the emission quantum yield relative to the nonisomerizable complex fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Me(4)phen)(bpa)](+) (bpa = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane). From temperature-dependent time-resolved emission measurements in solution and in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films, energy barriers (Delta E(a)) for interconversion between (3)MLCT(Re -> me4Phen) and (3)IL(Me4phen) emitting states were determined. For L = cis-stpy, Delta E(a) = 11 (920 cm(-1)) and 15 kJ mol(-1) (1254 cm(-1)) in 5:4 propionitrile/butyronitrile and PMMA, respectively. For L = cis-bpe, Delta E(a) = 13 kJ mol(-1) (1087 cm(-1)) in 5:4 propionitrile/butyronitrile. These energy barriers are sufficient to decrease the rate constant for internal conversion from higher-lying (3)IL(me4phen) state to (3)MLCT(Re -> Me4phen), k(i) congruent to 10(6) s(-1). The decrease in rate allows for the observation of intraligand phosphorescence, even in fluid medium at room temperature. Our results provide additional insight into the role of energy gap and excited-state dynamics on the photochemical and photophysical properties of Re(I) polypyridyl complexes.

Raman spectra of polymer electrolytes based on poly(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether (PEGdME) with LiClO(4), PEGdME/LiClO(4), and the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, PEGdME/[bmim]PF(6), are compared. Raman spectroscopy suggests stronger interactions in PEGdME/LiClO(4) than PEGdmE/[bmim]PF(6), thus corroborating previous results obtained by molecular dynamics simulations. Quantum Chemistry methods have been used to calculate vibrational frequencies and the equilibrium structure of segments of the polymer chain around the cation. A consistent picture has been obtained from Raman spectroscopy, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and molecular dynamics simulations for these polymer electrolytes. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The thioxanthone-sensitized photodegradation of poly(alkyl methacrylate) films [alkyl = methyl, ethyl, butyl, and hexyl] was studied using near UV-vis light. The photooxidation process continued even after the total consumption of the sensitizer, possibly due to the excitation of the ketyl groups formed during the first stages of the process. The rate of oxidation, as well as the formation of hydroxy, peroxy, and ketyl groups was faster for polymers with larger ester groups. The decrease of the molecular weight of the degradated polymers was also larger for the hexyl substituted polymer. The side-chain size effect was attributed to the larger amount of secondary hydrogens available for abstraction by the triplet state of thioxanthone, present in the larger ester groups. The lower glass transition temperature of the hexyl substituted polymer allows a better diffusion of oxygen to the deeper layers of the films that also contributes to the faster photodegradation rate. Thermosetting polymer blends of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and bisphenol-A-type epoxy resin (ER) were prepared using 4,4′-methylenebis(3-chloro-2,6-diethylaniline) (MCDEA) as curing agent. The miscibility and crystallization behavior of MCDEA-cured ER/PEO blends were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The existence of a single composition-dependent glass transition temperature (Tg) indicates that PEO is completely miscible with MCDEA-cured ER in the melt and in the amorphous state over the entire composition range. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) investigations indicated hydrogen-bonding interaction between the hydroxyl groups of MCDEA-cured ER and the ether oxygens of PEO in the blends, which is an important driving force for the miscibility of the blends. The average strength of the hydrogen bond in the cured ER/PEO blends is higher than in the pure MCDEA-cured ER. Crystallization kinetics of PEO from the melt is strongly influenced by the blend composition and the crystallization temperature. At high conversion, the time dependence of the relative degree of crystallinity deviated from the Avrami equation. The addition of a non-crystallizable ER component into PEO causes a depression of both the overall crystallization rate and the melting temperature. The surface free energy of folding σe displays a minimum with variation of composition. The spherulitic morphology of PEO in the ER/PEO blends exhibits typical characteristics of miscible crystalline/amorphous blends, and the PEO spherulites in the blends are always completely volume-filling. Real-time small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments reveal that the long period L increases drastically with increasing ER content at the same temperatures. The amorphous cured ER component segregates interlamellarly during the crystallization process of PEO because of the low chain mobility of the cured ER. A model describing the semicrystalline morphology of MCDEA-cured ER/PEO blends is proposed based on the SAXS results. The semicrystalline morphology is a stack of crystalline lamellae; the amorphous fraction of PEO, the branched ER chains and imperfect ER network are located between PEO lamellae.

Nanostructured thermoset blends of bisphenol A-type epoxy resin (ER) and amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(propylene oxide)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) triblock copolymers were successfully prepared. Two samples of PEO-PPO-PEO triblock copolymer with different ethylene oxide (EO) contents, denoted as EO30 with 30 wt % EO content and EO80 with 80 wt % EO content, were used to form the self-organized thermoset blends of varying compositions using 4,4'-methylenedianiline (MDA) as curing agent. The phase behavior, crystallization, and morphology were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). It was found that macroscopic phase separation took place in the MDA-cured ER/EO30 blends containing 60-80 wt % EO30 triblock copolymer. The MDA-cured ER/EO30 blends with EO30 content up to 50 wt % do not show macroscopic phase separation but exhibit nanostructures on the order of 10-30 nm as revealed by both the TEM and SAXS studies. The AFM study further shows that the ER/EO30 blend at some composition displays structural inhomogeneity at two different nanoscales and is hierarchically nanostructured. The spherical PPO domains with an average size of about 10 nm are uniformly dispersed in the 80/20 ER/EO30 blend; meanwhile, a structural inhomogeneity on the order of 50-200 nm is observed. The ER/EO80 blends are not macroscopically phase-separated over the entire composition range because of the much higher PEO content of the EO80 triblock copolymer. However, the ER/EO80 blends show composition-dependent nanostructures on the order of 10-100 nm. The 80/20 ER/EO80 blend displays hierarchical structures at two different nanoscales, i.e., a bicontinuous microphase structure on the order of about 100 nm and spherical domains of 10-20 nm in diameter uniformly dispersed in both the continuous microphases. The blends with 60 wt % and higher EO80 content are completely volume-filled with spherulites. Bundles of PEO lamellae with spacing of 20-30 nm interwoven with a microphase structure on the order of about 100 nm are revealed by AFM study for the 30/70 ER/EO80 blend.

In this paper, we investigated the Langmuir film and Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) monolayer film of a nonionic amphiphilic molecule, 4-(6-p-pyridyloxyl)hexyloxyl-4′-dodecyloxylazobenzene (C12AzoC6Py) and its mixture with poly(d,l-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLG) at different subphase pH values (2.0, 2.6, 3.3, 4.4, and 6.5, respectively) by surface pressure–area (π–A) isotherms, in situ interface Brewster angle microscopy (BAM), and ex situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). For pure C12AzoC6Py, its π–A isotherms display a plateau when the subphase pH value is lower than 3.0. The pressure of the plateau increases with the decrease of pH until 2.0. Over the plateau, the π–A isotherms become almost identical to the one under neutral conditions. The appearance of such a plateau can be explained as the coexistence of protonation and unprotonation of pyridyl head groups of the employed amphiphile. In contrast to the homogeneous surface morphology of pure C12AzoC6Py near the plateau by BAM observation, the surface in the case of its mixing with PLG exhibits a dendritic crystalline state under low surface pressure at subphase pH lower than 3.0. The crystalline state becomes soft and gradually melts into homogeneous aggregates with surface pressure increasing to a higher value than that of the plateau. Meanwhile, the hydrolysis of PLG in the mixture system at the interface has been affirmed to be restrained to a very large extent. And the PLG was believed to be compelled to the up layer of the LB film due to the phase separation, which is examined by AFM. Based on the experimental results, the corresponding discussion was also performed.

The plastic crystal phase forming N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate organic salt (P13BF4) was combined with 2, 5 and 10 wt.% poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP). The ternary 2 wt.% PVP/2 wt.% LiBF4/P13BF4 was also investigated. Thermal analysis, conductivity, optical thermomicroscopy, and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (11B, 19F, 1H, 7Li) were used to probe the fundamental transport processes. Both the onset of phase I and the final melting temperature were reduced with increasing additions of PVP. Conductivity in phase I was 2.6 × 10− 4 S cm− 1 5.2 × 10− 4 S cm− 1 1.1 × 10− 4 S cm− 1 and 3.9 × 10− 5 S cm− 1 for 0, 2, 5 and 10 wt.%PVP/P13BF4, respectively. Doping with 2 wt.% LiBF4 increased the conductivity by up to an order of magnitude in phase II. Further additions of 2 wt.% PVP slightly reduced the conductivity, although it remained higher than for pure P13BF4.

Solvent-free polymer electrolytes based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and LiCF3SO3 have shown relatively high conductivities (10−8-10−4 S cm−1), with Arrhenius temperature dependence below the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) glass transition temperature (343 K). This behaviour is in stark contrast to traditional polymer electrolytes in which the conductivity reflects VTF behaviour. 7Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has been employed to develop a better understanding of the conduction mechanism. Variable temperature NMR has indicated that, unlike traditional polymer electrolytes where the linewidth reaches a rigid lattice limit near Tg, the lithium linewidths show an exponential decrease with increasing temperature between 260 and 360 K. The rigid lattice limit appears to be below 260 K. Consequently, the mechanism for ion conduction appears to be decoupled from the main segmental motions of the PVA. Possible mechanisms include ion hopping, proton conduction or ionic motion assisted by secondary polymer relaxations.

Measurements of the glass transition temperature (Tg) and free volume behaviour of poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN) and PAN/lithium triflate (LiTf), with varying salt composition from 10 to 66 wt% LiTf, were made by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). Addition of salt from 10 to 45 wt% LiTf resulted in an increase in the mean free volume cavity size at room temperature (r.t.) as measured by the orthoPositronium (oPs) pickoff lifetime, τ3, with little change in relative concentration of free volume sites as measured by oPs pickoff intensity, I3. The region from 45 to 66 wt% salt displayed no variation in relative free volume cavity size and concentration. This salt concentration range (45 wt%<[LiTf]<66 wt%) corresponds to a region of high ionic conductivity of order 10−5 to 10−6 S cm−1 at Tg as measured by PALS. A percolation phenomenon is postulated to describe conduction in this composition region. Salt addition was shown to lower the Tg as measured by PALS; Tg was 115°C for PAN and 85°C for PAN/66 wt% LiTf. The Tg and free volume behaviour of this polymer-in-salt electrolyte (PISE) was compared to a poly(ether urethane)/LiClO4 where the polymer is the major component, i.e. traditional solid polymer electrolyte (SPE). In contrast to the PISE, the Tg of the SPE was shown to increase with increasing salt concentration from 5.3 to 15.9 wt%. The relative free volume cavity size and concentration at r.t. were shown to decrease with increasing salt concentration. Ionic conductivity in this SPE was of order 10−5 S cm−1 at r.t., which is over 60°C above Tg, 10−8 S cm−1 at 25°C above Tg, and conductivity was not measurable at Tg.

The [Fc[BOND]bis{ZnII(TACN)(Py)}] complex, comprising two ZnII(TACN) ligands (Fc=ferrocene; Py=pyrene; TACN=1,4,7-triazacyclononane) bearing fluorescent pyrene chromophores linked by an electrochemically active ferrocene molecule has been synthesised in high yield through a multistep procedure. In the absence of the polyphosphate guest molecules, very weak excimer emission was observed, indicating that the two pyrene-bearing ZnII(TACN) units are arranged in a trans-like configuration with respect to the ferrocene bridging unit. Binding of a variety of polyphosphate anionic guests (PPi and nucleotides di- and triphosphate) promotes the interaction between pyrene units and results in an enhancement in excimer emission. Investigations of phosphate binding by 31P NMR spectroscopy, fluorescence and electrochemical techniques confirmed a 1:1 stoichiometry for the binding of PPi and nucleotide polyphosphate anions to the bis(ZnII(TACN)) moiety of [Fc[BOND]bis{ZnII(TACN)(Py)}] and indicated that binding induces a trans to cis configuration rearrangement of the bis(ZnII(TACN)) complexes that is responsible for the enhancement of the pyrene excimer emission. Pyrophosphate was concluded to have the strongest affinity to [Fc[BOND]bis{ZnII(TACN)(Py)}] among the anions tested based on a six-fold fluorescence enhancement and 0.1 V negative shift in the potential of the ferrocene/ferrocenium couple. The binding constant for a variety of polyphosphate anions was determined from the change in the intensity of pyrene excimer emission with polyphosphate concentration, measured at 475 nm in CH3CN/Tris-HCl (1:9) buffer solution (10.0 mM, pH 7.4). These measurements confirmed that pyrophosphate binds more strongly (Kb=(4.45±0.41)×106 M−1) than the other nucleotide di- and triphosphates (Kb=1–50×105 M−1) tested.

Percolative dielectric composites of sulfonated poly(aryl ether ketone) (SPAEK) and acidified graphite nanosheets (AGSs) were fabricated by a solution method. The dielectric constant of the as-prepared composite with 4.01 vol % AGSs was found to be 330 at 1000 Hz; this was a significant increase compared to that of pure SPAEK. Through the calculation, a low percolation threshold of the AGS/SPAEK composite was confirmed at 3.18 vol % (0.0318 volume fraction) AGSs; this was attributed to the large surface area and high conductivity of the AGSs. Additionally, our percolative dielectric composites also exhibited good mechanical performances and good thermostability, with a tensile strength of 71.7 MPa, a tensile modulus of 1.91 GPa, a breaking elongation of 16.4%, and a mass loss temperature at 5% of 336°C.

Chemical sensors made from nanostructured films of poly(o-ethoxyaniline) POEA and poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) PSS are produced and used to detect and distinguish 4 chemicals in solution at 20 mM, including sucrose, NaCl, HCl, and caffeine. These substances are used in order to mimic the 4 basic tastes recognized by humans, namely sweet, salty, sour, and bitter, respectively. The sensors are produced by the deposition of POEA/PSS films at the top of interdigitated microelectrodes via the layer-by-layer technique, using POEA solutions containing different dopant acids. Besides the different characteristics of the POEA/PSS films investigated by UV-Vis and Raman spectroscopies, and by atomic force microscopy.. it is observed that their electrical response to the different chemicals in liquid media is very fast, in the order of seconds, systematical, reproducible, and extremely dependent on the type of acid used for film fabrication. The responses of the as-prepared sensors are reproducible and repetitive after many cycles of operation. Furthermore, the use of an "electronic tongue" composed by an array of these sensors and principal component analysis as pattern recognition tool allows one to reasonably distinguish test solutions according to their chemical composition.
