[EN]We investigate mechanisms which can endow the computer with the ability of describing a human face by means of computer vision techniques. This is a necessary requirement in order to develop HCI approaches which make the user feel himself/herself perceived. This paper describes our experiences considering gender, race and the presence of moustache and glasses. This is accomplished comparing, on a set of 6000 facial images, two di erent face representation approaches: Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and Gabor lters. The results achieved using a Support Vector Machine (SVM) based classi er are promising and particularly better for the second representation approach.

[EN]Automatic detection systems do not perform as well as human observers, even on simple detection tasks. A potential solution to this problem is training vision systems on appropriate regions of interests (ROIs), in contrast to training on predefined and arbitrarily selected regions. Here we focus on detecting pedestrians in static scenes. Our aim is to answer the following question: Can automatic vision systems for pedestrian detection be improved by training them on perceptually-defined ROIs?

[ES]This paper describes an analysis performed for facial description in static images and video streams. The still image context is first analyzed in order to decide the optimal classifier configuration for each problem: gender recognition, race classification, and glasses and moustache presence. These results are later applied to significant samples which are automatically extracted in real-time from video streams achieving promising results in the facial description of 70 individuals by means of gender, race and the presence of glasses and moustache.

[EN]This paper describes in detail a real-time multiple face detection system for video streams. The system adds to the good performance provided by a window shift approach, the combination of different cues available in video streams due to temporal coherence. The results achieved by this combined solution outperform the basic face detector obtaining a 98% success rate for around 27000 images, providing additionally eye detection and a relation between the successive detections in time by means of detection threads.

[EN]This paper describes a face detection system which goes beyond traditional approaches normally designed for still images. First the video stream context is considered to apply the detector, and therefore, the resulting system is designed taking into consideration a main feature available in a video stream, i.e. temporal coherence. The resulting system builds a feature based model for each detected face, and searches them using various model information in the next frame. The results achieved for video stream processing outperform Rowley-Kanade's and Viola-Jones' solutions providing eye and face data in a reduced time with a notable correct detection rate.

[EN]Vision-based applications designed for humanmachine interaction require fast and accurate hand detection. However, previous works on this field assume different constraints, like a limitation in the number of detected gestures, because hands are highly complex objects to locate. This paper presents an approach which changes the detection target without limiting the number of detected gestures. Using a cascade classifier we detect hands based on their wrists. With this approach, we introduce two main contributions: (1) a reliable segmentation, independently of the gesture being made and (2) a training phase faster than previous cascade classifier based methods. The paper includes experimental evaluations with different video streams that illustrate the efficiency and suitability for perceptual interfaces.

[EN]Most automatic recognition systems are focused on recognizing, given a single mug-shot of an individual, any new image of that individual. Most verification systems are designed to authenticate an identity provided by the user. However, the previous work rarely focus on the problem of detecting when a new individual, i.e., an unknown one, is present. The goal of the work presented in this paper deals with the possibility of providing the system with basic tools to detect when a new individual starts an interactive session, in order to allow the system to add or improve an identity model in the database. Experiments carried out with a set of 36 different individuals show promising results.

[EN]In visual surveillance face detection can be an important cue for initializing tracking algorithms. Recent work in psychophics hints at the importance of the local context of a face for robust detection, such as head contours and torso. This paper describes a detector that actively utilizes the idea of local context. The promise is to gain robustness that goes beyond the capabilities of traditional face detection making it particularly interesting for surveillance. The performance of the proposed detector in terms of accuracy and speed is evaluated on data sets from PETS 2000 and PETS 2003 and compared to the object-centered approach. Particular attention is paid to the role of available image resolution.
