Structure and phase transition of LaO1−xF1+2x, prepared by solid-state reaction of La2O3 and LaF3, was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry for both positive and negative values of the nonstoichiometric parameter x. The electrical conductivity was investigated as a function of temperature and oxygen partial pressure using AC impedance spectroscopy. Fluoride ion was identified as the migrating species in LaOF by coulometric titration and transport number determined by Tubandt technique and EMF measurements. Activation energy for conduction in LaOF was 58.5 (±0.8) kJ/mol. Conductivity increased with increasing fluorine concentration in the oxyfluoride phase, suggesting that interstitial fluoride ions are more mobile than vacancies. Although the values of ionic conductivity of cubic LaOF are lower, the oxygen partial pressure range for predominantly ionic conduction is larger than that for the commonly used stabilized-zirconia electrolytes. Thermodynamic analysis shows that the oxyfluoride is stable in atmospheres containing diatomic oxygen. However, the oxyfluoride phase can degrade with time at high temperatures in atmospheres containing water vapor, because of the higher stability of HF compared with H2O.

An extension to a formal verification approach of hybrid systems is proposed to verify analog and mixed signal (AMS) designs. AMS designs can be formally modeled as hybrid systems and therefore lend themselves to the formal analysis and verification techniques applied to hybrid systems. The proposed approach employs simulation traces obtained from an actual design implementation of AMS circuit blocks (for example, in the form of SPICE netlists) to carry out formal analysis and verification. This enables the same platform used for formally validating an abstract model of an AMS design, to be also used for validating its different refinements and design implementation; thereby, providing a simple route to formal verification at different levels of implementation. The feasibility of the proposed approach is demonstrated with a case study based on a tunnel diode oscillator. Since the device characteristic of a tunnel diode is highly non-linear with a negative resistance region, dynamic behavior of circuits in which it is employed as an element is difficult to model, analyze and verify within a general hybrid system formal verification tool. In the case study presented the formal model and the proposed computational techniques have been incorporated into CheckMate, a formal verification tool based on MATLAB and Simulink-Stateflow Framework from MathWorks.

Stable and highly reproducible current‐limiting characteristics are observed for polycrystalline ceramics prepared by sintering mixtures of coarse‐grained, donor‐doped BaTiO3 (tetragonal) as the major phase and ultrafine, undoped cubic perovskite such as BaSnO3, BaZrO 3, SrTiO3, or BaTiO3 (cubic). The linear current‐voltage (I‐V) relation changes over to current limiting as the field strength increases, when thermal equilibrium is attained. The grain‐boundary layers with low donor and high Sn, Zr, or Sr have depleted charge carrier density as compared to that in the grain bulk. The voltage drop at the grain‐boundary layers diminishes the temperature gradient between the interior and surface regions.

We present a critical study of the temperature and field dependence magnetization of high temperature superconductors (HTSCs). The controversial field dependence of dM/dInB for YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7) (YBCO) and Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8) (BSCCO) is discussed using different models. Moreover, for both the systems the magnetization (M(H)) dependence is compared with field (H) dependence. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

VLBI observations at 6 cm reported of several weak radio cores of normal and Seyfert galaxies, of radio sources which have jets or a head tail morphology as well as some stronger cores of flat spectrum galaxies from the NRAO-Bonn "S 4", survey. Nearly all sources were detected at an angular resolution of approximately 15 milli arc s. Some of the sources are resolved at this level.

Photoemission spectroscopy offers the unique possibility of mapping out the electronic structure of the occupied electron states. However, the extreme surface sensitivity of this technique ensures that only the surface and the near-surface regions of any sample are probed. An important question arises in this context—Is the electronic structure of the surface region the same as that of the bulk? We address this issue using two different series of vanadium oxides, Ca1−xSrxVO3 and La1−xCaxVO3. Our results clearly establish that the electronic structure of the surface region is drastically different from that of the bulk in both these cases. We provide a method to separate the two contributions: one arising from the near-surface region and the other representative of the bulk. This separation allows us to deduce some very unusual behaviors of the electronic structures in these systems.

The critical behaviour has been investigated in single crystalline Nd0.6Pb0.4MnO3 near the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition temperature (TC) by static magnetic measurements. The values of TC and the critical exponents β, γ and δ are estimated by analysing the data in the critical region. The exponent values are very close to those expected for 3D Heisenberg ferromagnets with short-range interactions. Specific heat measurements show a broad cusp at TC (i.e., exponent α<0) being consistent with Heisenberg-like behaviour.

Photoluminescence studies, carried out using the Fourier Transform method rather than the conventional monochromator-dispersion method, are reported on glassy samples of indium-bismuth mixed doped Ge (10) Se(90-x-y) In (x) Bi (y) system (x,y = 5,10). The amorphous Bi2Se3 is found to be n-type like the crystalline counterpart. The possible contributions from microscopic cluster-level phase separation of Bi2Se3 and from the defects to the change in conductivity from p- to n- typein this system is discussed. The similar situation in related systems is also pointed out.

This paper reports the studies conducted on removal of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from diesel engine exhaust using electrical discharge plasma combined with adsorbing materials such as molecular sieves. This study is being reported for the first time. The exhaust is taken from a diesel engine of 6 kW under no load conditions. The characteristic behavior of a pulse energized dielectric barrier discharge reactor in the diesel exhaust treatment is reported. The NOx removal was not significant (36%) when the reactor without any packing was used. However, when the reactor was packed with molecular sieves (MS -3A, -4A & -13X), the NOx removal efficiency was increased to 78% particularly at a temperature of 200 °C. The studies were conducted at different temperatures and the results were discussed.

A single-stage plasma-catalytic reactor in which catalytic materials were packed was used to remove nitrogen oxides. The packing material was scoria being made of various metal oxides including Al2O3, MgO, TiO2, etc. Scoria was able to act not only as dielectric pellets but also as a catalyst in the presence of reducing agent such as ethylene and ammonia. Without plasma discharge, scoria did not work well as a catalyst in the temperature range of 100 °C to 200 °C, showing less than 10% of NOx removal efficiency. When plasma is produced inside the reactor, the NOx removal efficiency could be increased to 60% in this temperature range.

Chitosan (CS)-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) cross-linked with sulfosuccinic acid (SSA) and modified with sulfonated polyethersulfone (SPES) mixed-matrix membranes are reported for their application in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Polyethersulfone (PES) is sulfonated by chlorosulfonic acid and factors affecting the sulfonation reaction, such as time and temperature, are studied. The ion-exchange capacity, degree of sulfonation, sorption, and proton conductivity for the mixed-matrix membranes are investigated. The mixed-matrix membranes are also characterised for their mechanical and thermal properties. The methanol-crossover flux across the mixed-matrix membranes is studied by measuring the mass balance of methanol using the density meter. The methanol cross-over for these membranes is found to be about 33% lower in relation to Nafion-117 membrane. The DMFC employing CS-PVA-SPES mixed-matrix membrane with an optimum content of 25 wt % SPES delivers a peak power-density of 5.5 mW cm-2 at a load current-density of 25 mA cm-2 while operating at 70 degrees C. The synthesis of cobalt-doped ZnO nanowires is achieved using a simple, metal salt decomposition growth technique. A sequence of drop casting on a quartz substrate held at 100 degrees C and annealing results in the growth of nanowires of average (modal) length similar to 200 nm and diameter of 15 +/- 4 nm and consequently an aspect ratio of similar to 13. A variation in the synthesis process, where the solution of mixed salts is deposited on the substrate at 25 degrees C, yields a grainy film structure which constitutes a useful comparator case. X-ray diffraction shows a preferred 0001] growth direction for the nanowires while a small unit cell volume contraction for Co-doped samples and data from Raman spectroscopy indicate incorporation of the Co dopant into the lattice; neither technique shows explicit evidence of cobalt oxides. Also the nanowire samples display excellent optical transmission across the entire visible range, as well as strong photoluminescence (exciton emission) in the near UV, centered at 3.25 eV. The reaction of the benzoylhydrazone of 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde (H2L) with MoO2(acac)(2)] proceeds smoothly in refluxing ethanol to afford an orange complex MoO2L(C2H5OH)] (1). The substrate binding capacity of 1 has been demonstrated by the formation and isolation of two mononuclear MoO2L(Q)] {where Q = imidazole (2a) and 1-methylimidazole (2b)} and one dinuclear (MoO2L)(2)(Q)] {Q = 4,4'-bipyridine (3)} mixed-ligand oxomolybdenum complex. All the complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic and spectroscopic (IR, UV-Vis and NMR) measurements. The molecular structures of all the oxomolybdenum(VI) complexes (1, 2a, 2b and 3) have been determined by X-ray crystallography. In each complex, the dianionic planar ligand is coordinated to the metal centre via one enolate oxygen, one phenolate oxygen and an azomethine nitrogen atom. The complexes have been screened for their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Bacillus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The minimum inhibitory concentration of these complexes and their antibacterial activity indicates that compounds 2a and 2b are potential lead molecules for drug designing. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
