The content of the report relates from the Initiativeâ?Ts launch in July 1999 to June 2002.The Initiative sought to provide a range of additional support services for teen parents during pregnancy, until their children reached 2 years of age. The SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (www.isb-sib.ch) was created in 1998 as an institution to foster excellence in bioinformatics. It is renowned worldwide for its databases and software tools, such as UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot, PROSITE, SWISS-MODEL, STRING, etc, that are all accessible on ExPASy.org, SIB's Bioinformatics Resource Portal. This article provides an overview of the scientific and training resources SIB has consistently been offering to the life science community for more than 15 years.

Malnutrition is common in critically ill, hospitalized patients and so represents a major problem for intensive care. Nutritional support can be beneficial in such cases and may help preserve vital organ and immune function. Energy requirements, route of delivery and potential complications of nutritional support are discussed in this paper.

When the Nursing Homes Support Scheme, A Fair Deal, was introduced in October 2009, a commitment was made that it would be reviewed after three years. The reason for allowing this period to elapse was to ensure that the Scheme had bedded in and that established and validated trends and statistics would be available in order to inform the work. BACKGROUND: Use of cardiopulmonary bypass for emergency resuscitation is not new. In fact, John Gibbon proposed this concept for the treatment of severe pulmonary embolism in 1937. Significant progress has been made since, and two main concepts for cardiac assist based on cardiopulmonary bypass have emerged: cardiopulmonary support (CPS) and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The objective of this review is to summarize the state of the art in these two technologies. METHODS: Configuration of CPS is now fairly standard. A mobile cart with relatively large wheels allowing for easy transportation carries a centrifugal pump, a back-up battery with a charger, an oxygen cylinder, and a small heating system. Percutaneous cannulation, pump-driven venous return, rapid availability, and transportability are the main characteristics of a CPS system. Cardiocirculatory arrest is a major predictor of mortality despite the use of CPS. In contrast, CPS appears to be a powerful tool for patients in cardiogenic shock before cardiocirculatory arrest, requiring some type of therapeutic procedures, especially repair of anatomically correctable problems or bridging to other mechanical circulatory support systems such as ventricular assist devices. CPS is in general not suitable for long-term applications because of the small-bore cannulas, resulting in significant pressure gradients and eventually hemolysis. RESULTS: In contrast, ECMO can be designed for longer-term circulatory support. This requires large-bore cannulas and specifically designed oxygenators. The latter are either plasma leakage resistent (true membranes) or relatively thrombo-resistant (heparin coated). Both technologies require oxygenator changeovers although the main reason for this is different (clotting for the former, plasma leakage for the latter). Likewise, the tubing within a roller pump has to be displaced and centrifugal pump heads have to be replaced over time. ECMO is certainly the first choice for a circulatory support system in the neonatal and pediatric age groups, where the other assist systems are too bulky. ECMO is also indicated for patients improving on CPS. Septic conditions are, in general, considered as contraindications for ECMO. CONCLUSIONS: Ease of availability and moderate cost of cardiopulmonary bypass-based cardiac support technologies have to be balanced against the significant immobilization of human resources, which is required to make them successful.

The application of support vector machine classification (SVM) to combined information from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and [F18]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) has been shown to improve detection and differentiation of Alzheimer's disease dementia (AD) and frontotemporal lobar degeneration. To validate this approach for the most frequent dementia syndrome AD, and to test its applicability to multicenter data, we randomly extracted FDG-PET and MRI data of 28 AD patients and 28 healthy control subjects from the database provided by the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) and compared them to data of 21 patients with AD and 13 control subjects from our own Leipzig cohort. SVM classification using combined volume-of-interest information from FDG-PET and MRI based on comprehensive quantitative meta-analyses investigating dementia syndromes revealed a higher discrimination accuracy in comparison to single modality classification. For the ADNI dataset accuracy rates of up to 88% and for the Leipzig cohort of up to 100% were obtained. Classifiers trained on the ADNI data discriminated the Leipzig cohorts with an accuracy of 91%. In conclusion, our results suggest SVM classification based on quantitative meta-analyses of multicenter data as a valid method for individual AD diagnosis. Furthermore, combining imaging information from MRI and FDG-PET might substantially improve the accuracy of AD diagnosis.
