An understanding of surface hydrogenation reactivity is a prevailing issue in chemistry and vital to the rational design of future catalysts. In this density-functional theory study, we address hydrogenation reactivity by examining the reaction pathways for N+H -> NH and NH+H -> NH2 over the close-packed surfaces of the 4d transition metals from Zr-Pd. It is found that the minimum-energy reaction pathway is dictated by the ease with which H can relocate between hollow-site and top-site adsorption geometries. A transition state where H is close to a top site reduces the instability associated with bond sharing of metal atoms by H and N (NH) (bonding competition). However, if the energy difference between hollow-site and top-site adsorption energies (Delta E-H) is large this type of transition state is unfavorable. Thus we have determined that hydrogenation reactivity is primarily controlled by the potential-energy surface of H on the metal, which is approximated by Delta E-H, and that the strength of N (NH) chemisorption energy is of less importance. Delta E-H has also enabled us to make predictions regarding the structure sensitivity of these reactions. Furthermore, we have found that the degree of bonding competition at the transition state is responsible for the trend in reaction barriers (E-a) across the transition series. When this effect is quantified a very good linear correlation is found with E-a. In addition, we find that when considering a particular type of reaction pathway, a good linear correlation is found between the destabilizing effects of bonding competition at the transition state and the strength of the forming N-H (HN-H) bond. Density functional theory with gradient corrections has been employed to study the reaction pathways and the reaction energetics for the transformations of CH4 to C and H on a Pd(100) surface. On examination of transition state structures identified in each elementary reaction, a clear relationship between the valencies of the CHx fragments and the locations of the transition states emerges. The higher the valency of the CHx fragment, the higher the coordination number of the CHx with the surface atoms. The calculated reaction energetics are in good agreement with the experiments. In addition, calculation results are also used to illustrate an interesting issue concerning the CH3 stability on Pd surfaces. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

The H+NO2 titration scheme for the determination of atomic hydrogen densities within a microwave excited flow tube reactor has been investigated by laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy in the vacuum UV. Absolute hydrogen densities are determined on the basis of calibration by Rayleigh scattering from argon. The measurement is performed at a gas mixture containing 0.5% of D2 added to the main gas H2. The ground state density of the hydrogen atoms generated in the flow tube reactor was inferred from the fluorescence radiation of the spectrally shifted optically thin D-Lyman-a transition.

Heating 2,5-di-O-methanesulfonyl-1,4:3,6-dianhydro-D-sorbitol (1) in a range of solvents led to the formation of a gel state at low concentrations. 1 was found to gel aromatics, alcohols and water. The structure of 1 in the solid state was solved by single crystal X-ray crystallography; no strong hydrogen bonds or associated solvents were found in the crystal. Electron micrographs revealed the morphology of the gels to be predominantly rod-like. The ethanol alcogel was used to template silica by sol-gel transcription.

We know considerably more about what makes cells and tissues resistant or sensitive to radiation than we did 20 years ago. Novel techniques in molecular biology have made a major contribution to our understanding at the level of signalling pathways. Before the “New Biology” era, radioresponsiveness was defined in terms of physiological parameters designated as the five Rs. These are: repair, repopulation, reassortment, reoxygenation and radiosensitivity. Of these, only the role of hypoxia proved to be a robust predictive and prognostic marker, but radiotherapy regimens were nonetheless modified in terms of dose per fraction, fraction size and overall time, in ways that persist in clinical practice today. The first molecular techniques were applied to radiobiology about two decades ago and soon revealed the existence of genes/proteins that respond to and influence the cellular outcome of irradiation. The subsequent development of screening techniques using microarray technology has since revealed that a very large number of genes fall into this category. We can now obtain an adequately robust molecular signature, predicting for a radioresponsive phenotype using gene expression and proteomic approaches. In parallel with these developments, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) can now detect specific biological molecules such as haemoglobin and glucose, so revealing a 3D map of tumour blood flow and metabolism. The key to personalised radiotherapy will be to extend this capability to the proteins of the molecular signature that determine radiosensitivity.

We present an occultation of the newly discovered hot Jupiter system WASP-19, observed with the High Acuity Wide-field K-band Imager instrument on the VLT, in order to measure thermal emission from the planet's dayside at ~2µm. The light curve was analysed using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to find the eclipse depth and the central transit time. The transit depth was found to be 0.366 +/- 0.072 per cent, corresponding to a brightness temperature of 2540 +/- 180 K. This is significantly higher than the calculated (zero-albedo) equilibrium temperature and indicates that the planet shows poor redistribution of heat to the night side, consistent with models of highly irradiated planets. Further observations are needed to confirm the existence of a temperature inversion and possibly molecular emission lines. The central eclipse time was found to be consistent with a circular orbit.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is synthesized in the body from L-Cysteine by several enzymes including cystathionine-gamma-lyase (CSE). To date, there is little information about the potential role of H2S in inflammation. We have now investigated the part played by H2S in endotoxin-induced inflammation in the mouse. E. coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration produced a dose (10 and 20 mg/kg ip)- and time (6 and 24 h)-dependent increase in plasma H2S concentration. LPS (10 mg/kg ip, 6 h) increased plasma H2S concentration from 34.1 +/- 0.7 mu M to 40.9 +/- 0.6 mu M (n=6, P

When highly charged ions are incident on a surface, part of their potential energy is emitted as characteristic radiation. The energies and yields of these characteristic x rays have been measured for a series of elements at the Tokyo electron-beam ion trap. These data have been used to develop a simple model of the relaxation of the hollow atoms which are formed as the ion approaches the surface, as well as a set of semiempirical scaling laws, which allow for the ready calculation of the K-shell x-ray spectrum which would be produced by an arbitrary slow bare or hydrogenlike ion on a surface. These semiempirical scaling laws can be used to assess the merit of highly charged ion fluorescence x-ray generation in a wide range of applications.

beta-D-glucose dissolved in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate in a 6 : 1 molar ratio (ionic liquid : glucose) has been studied by neutron scattering, NMR and molecular dynamics simulations. Good agreement was found between simulated neutron scattering profiles generated for isotopically substituted liquid systems and those experimentally determined as well as between simulated and experimental diffusion coefficients obtained by Pulsed Field Gradient NMR spectroscopy. The overriding glucose-ionic liquid interactions in the liquid are hydrogen-bonding between acetate oxygens and sugar hydroxyl groups. The ionic liquid cation was found to play only a minor role in the solvation of the sugar and does not participate in hydrogen-bonding with the sugar to any significant degree. NOESY experiments lend further evidence that there is no direct interaction between sugar hydroxyl groups and acidic hydrogens on the ionic liquid cation.

Densities ([rho]) and viscosities ([eta]) of binary mixtures containing the Protic Ionic Liquid (PIL), pyrrolidinium octanoate with five molecular solvents: water, methanol, ethanol, n-butanol, and acetonitrile are determined at the atmospheric pressure as a function of the temperature and within the whole composition range. The refractive index of all mixtures (nD) is measured at 298.15†K. The excess molar volumes VE and deviation from additivity rules of viscosities [eta]E and refractive index [Delta][phi]n, of pyrrolidinium octanoate solutions were then deduced from the experimental results as well as apparent molar volumes V[phi]i, partial molar volumes and thermal expansion coefficients [alpha]p. The excess molar volumes VE are negative over the entire mole fraction range for mixture with water, acetonitrile, and methanol indicating strong hydrogen-bonding interaction for the entire mole fraction. In the case of longest carbon chain alcohols (such as ethanol and n-butanol)†+†pyrrolidinium octanoate solutions, the VE variation as a function of the composition describes an S shape. The deviation from additivity rules of viscosities is negative over the entire composition range for the acetonitrile, methanol, ethanol, and butanol, and becomes less negative with increasing temperature. Whereas, [eta]E of the {[Pyrr][C7CO2]†+†water} binary mixtures is positive in the whole mole fraction range and decreases with increasing temperature. the excess Gibbs free energies of activation of viscous flow ([Delta]G*E) for these systems were calculated. The deviation from additivity rules of refractive index [Delta][phi]n are positive over the whole composition range and approach a maximum of 0.25 in PIL mole fraction for all systems. The magnitude of deviation for [Delta][phi]n describes the following order: water†>†methanol†>†acetonitrile†>†ethanol. Results have been discussed in terms of molecular interactions and molecular structures in these binary mixtures.

We have searched for HDS emission in a small number of hot cores. Using observations of (H2S)-S-34, we have derived upper limits to the [HDS]/[H2S] abundance ratio. The upper limits, which are close to 10(-3) can be interpreted in two ways, depending on whether grain surface reactions contribute to the formation of H2S. If grains do not dominate, then the H2S observed is formed in hot, post-shocked gas and a ratio close to the cosmic [D]/[H] ratio is expected for [HDS]/[H2S]. This scenario is consistent with our upper limits and with the relatively low abundance ratio found for [HDO]/[H2O] in hot cores but does not seem to account for all of the molecular [D]/[H] ratios observed in hot cores. If grains do dominate the formation of HBS, then the observed upper limit to the ratio is consistent with the formation of 'hot core ices' at a temperature of 60-80 K, close to the temperature at which cometary ices are thought to form.

We have observed the 3-2 transitions of DCN and (HCN)-N-15 in a number of hot molecular cores previously surveyed by us with the interesting result that the DCN/HCN ratio is low, a few times 10(-3), in the hot cores. The abundance ratio of DCN/HCN is derived both 'on-core' and 'off-core' and, in general is larger at the 'off-core' positions. Comparision with chemical models of these sources indicates that DCN liberated from evaporated ices can be destroyed rapidly in the hot gas by reaction with atomic hydrogen, which works to reset the the initial DCN/HCN ratio in the ice to the gas-phase atomic D/H ratio. The low DCN/HCN abundance ratio we measure can be reached in less than 10(4) years, consistent with previous estimates of the core ages, if the activation energy of the reaction is less than 500 K.
