Fast mobility support in low-power wireless networks: smart-HOP over RPL/6LoWPAN

With the emergence of low-power wireless hardware new ways of communication were needed. In order to standardize the communication between these low powered devices the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) released the 6LoWPAN stand- ard that acts as an additional layer for making the IPv6 link layer suitable for the lower-power and lossy networks. In the same way, IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low- Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) has been proposed by the IETF Routing Over Low power and Lossy networks (ROLL) Working Group as a standard routing protocol for IPv6 routing in low-power wireless sensor networks. The research performed in this thesis uses these technologies to implement a mobility process. Mobility management is a fundamental yet challenging area in low-power wireless networks. There are applications that require mobile nodes to exchange data with a xed infrastructure with quality-of-service guarantees. A prime example of these applications is the monitoring of patients in real-time. In these scenarios, broadcast- ing data to all access points (APs) within range may not be a valid option due to the energy consumption, data storage and complexity requirements. An alternative and e cient option is to allow mobile nodes to perform hand-o s. Hand-o mechanisms have been well studied in cellular and ad-hoc networks. However, low-power wireless networks pose a new set of challenges. On one hand, simpler radios and constrained resources ask for simpler hand-o schemes. On the other hand, the shorter coverage and higher variability of low-power links require a careful tuning of the hand-o parameters. In this work, we tackle the problem of integrating smart-HOP within a standard protocol, speci cally RPL. The simulation results in Cooja indicate that the pro- posed scheme minimizes the hand-o delay and the total network overhead. The standard RPL protocol is simply unable to provide a reliable mobility support sim- ilar to other COTS technologies. Instead, they support joining and leaving of nodes, with very low responsiveness in the existence of physical mobility.

Percepção do estado de saúde de doentes com anticoagulação oral

RESUMO - O aumento da incidência das doenças crónicas representa um desafio enorme para todos os Sistemas de Saúde, pelo que a assistência de Saúde a doentes crónicos se tornou num problema das sociedades ocidentais. Os países mais pobres são os que mais sofrem, embora nos países desenvolvidos também se verifique um aumento notável das doenças crónicas. Estima-se que estas representem mais de 60% do total das doenças mundiais no ano 2020 (WHO, 2001). A adaptação dos actuais modelos de saúde aos doentes crónicos não atingiu os objectivos, o que conduziu a que, de há alguns anos a esta parte, se procure alternativas mais eficazes e eficientes. Uma das pressões do mercado que se fazem sentir será caracterizada por uma maior aposta na Promoção da Saúde e Prevenção da doença. O conceito de “Saúde” migrou de “não existência de doença” para “Bem-estar Físico e Psicológico”. Desta forma, o foco dos cuidados de saúde teve que ser adaptado, o que conduziu a uma situação em que o âmbito da prestação de cuidados de saúde é um contínuo de serviços que vai desde a promoção da saúde, medicina preventiva e medicina curativa aos cuidados continuados e cuidados paliativos. As tecnologias de informação e comunicação desempenharão um importante papel nesta tendência, permitindo estabelecer ligações contínuas entre os consumidores e prestadores de cuidados de saúde. Por outro lado, as potencialidades da Internet, das comunicações móveis, dispositivos portáteis e do instrumental electrónico, tornam-se evidentes no desenvolvimento de serviços de e-Saúde: para monitorização, seguimento e controlo dos doentes extra hospitalar - serviços estes centrados no doente. O objectivo geral do presente estudo consiste no desenho de um projecto de investigação para posterior avaliação da percepção do estado de saúde dos doentes seguidos na consulta de hipocoagulação do Hospital de Santa Marta. Devido à escassez de investigação na temática deste trabalho em Portugal, procedeu-se a um trabalho exploratório, descritivo, de carácter comparativo e enquadrado na abordagem quantitativa. O campo de análise consiste em comparar doentes que fazem anticoagulação oral, seguidos na consulta de cardiologia (consulta convencional), com os doentes seguidos no programa Airmed (através das comunicações móveis). 4 Para avaliação da percepção do estado de saúde foi utilizado o questionário SF-36.----ABSTRACT - The increasing incidence of chronic diseases represents an enormous challenge to the Health Systems and on cause of that, the Health Assistance to chronic patients became a concern of the Occidental society. The Countries with lower economical resources are the ones that suffers the most, but also the Developed countries have a noticeable increase of chronic diseases. It is estimated these will represent over 60% of total diseases world wide in 2020 (WHO,2001). The adaptation of the actual Health Models to chronic patients did not achieved it’s goals, what leaded to look for more effective and efficient alternatives. One of the more sensitive market pressure factor is to look for a better Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. The concept of “Health” merged from “Disease absence” to “Physic and Psychic Wellness”. In this way the Health Care focus had to be adapted, what drove to a status where the scope of the Health care is a continuum of services that goes from the Health Promotion, Preventive and Curative to Continued and Palliative Medical Care. The Information and Communication Technologies will play a crucial role in this trend, allowing to establish continued connections between patients and Health Care providers. In parallel the potential of the Internet, mobile communications, portable devices and electronic instruments became evident to deploy e-Health services: to monitor, follow-up and control of patients outside the Hospital. The overall objective of the present study is an Investigation Project Design to further evaluate the health status perception of the patients followed in the consultation for Hypocoagulation in the “Hospital de Santa Marta”. Due to lack of investigation in this thematic, in Portugal, this study is developed in an exploratory way, descriptive, comparative, within a scope of a quantified approach. Mobile cockpit system for enhanced electric bicycle use

This paper presents the project of a mobile cockpit system (MCS) for smartphones, which provides assistance to electric bicycle (EB) cyclists in smart cities' environment. The presented system introduces a mobile application (MCS App) with the goal to provide useful personalized information to the cyclist related to the EB's use, including EB range prediction considering the intended path, management of the cycling effort performed by the cyclist, handling of the battery charging process, and the provisioning of information regarding available public transport. This work also introduces the EB cyclist profile concept, which is based on historical data analysis previously stored in a database and collected from mobile devices' sensors. From the tests performed, the results show the importance of route guidance, taking into account the energy savings. The results also show significant changes on range prediction based on user and route taken. It is important to say that the proposed system can be used for all bicycles in general.

LSP communication in a digital age: the outcomes of teaching and learning in tertiary education

This paper discusses the changes brought by the communication revolution in teaching and learning in the scope of LSP. Its aim is to provide an insight on how teaching which was bi-dimensional, turned into a multidimensional system, gathering other complementary resources that have transformed, in a incredibly short time, the ways we receive share and store information, for instance as professionals, and keep in touch with our peers. The increasing rise of electronic publications, the incredible boom of social and professional networks, search engines, blogs, list servs, forums, e-mail blasts, Facebook pages, YouTube contents, Tweets and Apps, have twisted the way information is conveyed. Classes ceased to be predictable and have been empowered by digital platforms, innumerous and different data repositories (TILDE, IATE, LINGUEE, and so many other terminological data banks) that have definitely transformed the academic world in general and tertiary education in particular. There is a bulk of information to be digested by students, who are no longer passive but instead responsible and active for their academic outcomes. The question is whether they possess the tools to select only what is accurate and important for a certain subject or assignment, due to that overflow? Due to the reduction of the number of course years in most degrees, after the implementation of Bologna and the shrinking of the curricula contents, have students the possibility of developing critical thinking? Both teaching and learning rely on digital resources to improve the speed of the spreading of knowledge. But have those changes been effective to promote really communication? Furthermore, with the increasing Apps that have already been developed and will continue to appear for learning foreign languages, for translation among others, will the students feel the need of learning them once they have those Apps. These are some the questions we would like to discuss in our paper.

‘Thy love afar is spite at home' Emerson, Thoreau and Carey: an alternative perspective of communication in US

The conquest of the West by the stagecoaches and then by railway, Ford and the automobile civilization, the Moon landing by Apollo 11, Microsoft, Apple, CNN, Google and Facebook have appeared to us as celebratory examples of the willingness and ability of the US to overcome the distance and the absence through so-called modern progress of transportation and communication. Undoubtedly, the imaginary and the instrumental power associated to transports and communication of the last century and a half are identified with the mental images that the world has of the US. A world that has eagerly imported and copy their technology and technological culture. Beyond the illusions, this attempting, which has always been praised to transcende space and eclipse the time to get to places and peole increasingly distant and fast, has always a dark side: the political control of population, commercial advertising, the spread of the rumors, noise and gossip. However, since at least the nineteenth century, the political project incorporated in modern transportation and communication technologies was not shared by some of the most remarkable thinkers in the US not only in that century, but also in the 20th century. This paper begins by rescue Ralph W. Emerson and Henry D. Thoreau legacy regarding to communication. Emerson conceived communication as a give-and-take with no coordination between the two, and does not involve contact with the other. Thoreau, in turn, argued that modern trasnportation and communications inventions are but pretty toys which distract attention from serious things, nothing more than 'improved means to an end that is not perfected.' Secondly, we show that this skeptical view of the techological improvement of transport and communication was proceed in an original way with James W. Carey, a media studies thinker who became known for his criticism of the transmission view of communication.

ESEIG Mobile: an m-learning approach in a superior school

In recent years, mobile learning has emerged as an educational approach to decrease the limitation of learning location and adapt the teaching-learning process to all type of students. However, the large number and variety of Web-enabled devices poses challenges for Web content creators who want to automatic get the delivery context and adapt the content to mobile devices. This paper studies several approaches to adapt the learning content to mobile phones. It presents an architecture for deliver uniform m-Learning content to students in a higher School. The system development is organized in two phases: firstly enabling the educational content to mobile devices and then adapting it to all the heterogeneous mobile platforms. With this approach, Web authors will not need to create specialized pages for each kind of device, since the content is automatically transformed to adapt to any mobile device capabilities from WAP to XHTML MP-compliant devices.
