Additions of strontium to hypoeutectic aluminum-silicon alloys modify the morphology of the eutectic silicon phase from a coarse platelike structure to a fine fibrous structure. Thermal analysis, interrupted solidification, and microstructural examination of sand castings in this work revealed that, in addition to a change in silicon morphology, modification with strontium also causes an increase in the size of eutectic grains. The eutectic grain size increases because fewer grains nucleate, possibly due to poisoning of the phosphorus-based nucleants, that are active in the unmodified alloy. A simple growth model is developed to estimate the interface velocity during solidification of a eutectic grain. The model confirms, independent of microstructural observations, that the addition of 100 ppm strontium increases the eutectic grain size by at least an order of magnitude compared with the equivalent unmodified alloy. The model predicts that the growth velocity varies significantly during eutectic growth. At low strontium levels, these variations may be sufficient to cause transitions between flake and fibrous silicon morphologies depending on the casting conditions. The model can be used to rationally interpret the eutectic grain structure and silicon morphology of fully solidified aluminum-silicon castings and, when coupled with reliable thermal data, can be used to estimate the eutectic grain size.

The superplastic deformation behavior and superplastic forming ability of the Zr41.25Ti13.75Ni10Cu12.5Be22.5 (at.%) bulk metallic glass (BMG) in the supercooled liquid region were investigated. The isothermal tensile results indicate (hat the BMG exhibits a Newtonian behavior at low strain rates but a non-Newtonian behavior at hiqh-strain rates in the initial deformation stage. The maximum elongation reaches as high as 1624% at 656 K. and nanocrystallization was found to occur during the deformation process. Based cm the analysis on tensile deformation. a gear-like micropart is successfully die-forged via a superplastic forgings process. demonstrating that the BMG has excellent workability in the supercooled liquid region. A trace of beryllium can lead to dramatic grain coarsening in Mg-Al alloys at normal cooling rates. It is, however, unclear whether this effect applies to aluminium-free magnesium alloys or not. This work shows that a trace of beryllium also causes considerable grain coarsening in Mg-Zn, Mg-Ca, Mg-Ce and Mg-Nd alloys and hinders grain refinement of magnesium alloys by zirconium as well. Banded defects are often found in high-pressure die castings. These bands can contain segregation, porosity, and/or tears, and changing casting conditions and alloy are known to change the position and make-up of the bands. Due to the complex, dynamic nature of the high-pressure die-casting (HPDC) process, it is very difficult to study the effect of individual parameters on band formation. In the work presented here, bands of segregation similar to those found in cold-chamber HPDC aluminum alloys were found in laboratory gravity die castings. Samples were cast with a range of fraction solids from 0 to 0.3 and the effect of die temperature and external solid fraction on segregation bands was investigated. The results are considered with reference to the theological properties of the filling semisolid metal and a formation mechanism for bands is proposed by considering flow past a solidifying immobile wall layer.

The effect of increasing levels of silicon on the microstructure and creep properties of high-pressure die-cast Mg-Al-Si (AS) alloys has been investigated. The morphology of the Mg2Si phase in die-cast AS alloys was found to be a function of the silicon content. The Mg2Si particles in castings with up to 1.14 wt pct Si have a Chinese script morphology. For AS21 alloys with silicon contents greater than 1.4 wt pet Si (greater than the alpha-Mg2Si binary eutectic point), some Mg2Si particles have a coarse blocky shape. Increasing the silicon content above the eutectic level results in an increase in the number of coarse faceted Mg2Si particles in the microstructure. Creep rates at 100 hours were found to decrease with increasing silicon content in AS-type alloys. The decrease in creep rate was most dramatic for silicon contents up to 1.1 wt pct. Further additions of silicon of up to 2.64 wt pct also resulted in significant decreases in creep rate.

The flow stress in tension and compression has been measured as a function of plastic strain in Mg-2Zn castings with grain sizes ranging from 55 to 340 mum. Hall-Petch parameters have been calculated and are compared to those previously reported. In contrast to the behaviour of pure Mg grain refined with Zr and of hot-worked and recrystallised pure Mg and Mg-Zn alloys, the cast material shows little tension/compression asymmetry of the flow stress. The possible effects of texture and of twinning are noted. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The tensile deformation behavior of a range of supersaturated Mg-Al solid solutions and an as-cast magnesium alloy AM60 has been studied. The Mg-Al alloys were tested at room temperature while the alloy AM60 was tested in the temperature range 293-573 K. The differences in the deformation behavior of the alloys is discussed in terms of hardening and softening processes. In order to identify which processes were active, the stress dependence of the strain-hardening coefficient was assessed using Lukac and Balik's model of hardening and softening. The analysis indicates that hardening involves solid solution hardening and interaction with forest dislocations and non-dislocation obstacles such as second phase particles. Cross slip is not a significant recovery process in the temperature range 293-423 K. At temperatures between 473 and 523 K the analysis suggests that softening is controlled by cross slip and climb of dislocations. At temperatures above 523 K softening seems to be controlled by dynamic recrystallisation. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The growth behaviour of the vibrational wear phenomenon known as rail corrugation is investigated analytically and numerically using mathematical models. A simplified feedback model for wear-type rail corrugation that includes a wheel pass time delay is developed with an aim to analytically distil the most critical interaction occurring between the wheel/rail structural dynamics, rolling contact mechanics and rail wear. To this end, a stability analysis on the complete system is performed to determine the growth of wear-type rail corrugations over multiple wheelset passages. This analysis indicates that although the dynamical behaviour of the system is stable for each wheel passage, over multiple wheelset passages, the growth of wear-type corrugations is shown to be the result of instability due to feedback interaction between the three primary components of the model. The corrugations are shown analytically to grow for all realistic railway parameters. From this analysis an analytical expression for the exponential growth rate of corrugations in terms of known parameters is developed. This convenient expression is used to perform a sensitivity analysis to identify critical parameters that most affect corrugation growth. The analytical predictions are shown to compare well with results from a benchmarked time-domain finite element model. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper we report the results of ab initio calculations on the energetics and kinetics of oxygen-driven carbon gasification reactions using a small model cluster, with full characterisation of the stationary points on the reaction paths. We show that previously unconsidered pathways present significantly reduced barriers to reaction and must be considered as alternative viable paths. At least two electronic spin states of the model cluster must be considered for a complete description. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper presents results on the preparation of microcapsules containing liquid organosilica, and their co-deposition with copper in an acidic copper electrolyte onto a carbon steel cathode to form a copper/microcapsule composite coating. Microscopic analyses of the surface and the cross-section of the coating confirm the incorporation of the liquid-containing microcapsules in the coating layer. The influence of microcapsules in the electrolyte on the cathode polarization, as well as that of process conditions on the microcapsule inclusion, is also discussed. The phase equilibria in the Al-Fe-Zn-O system in the range 1250 °C to 1695 °C in air have been experimentally studied using equilibration and quenching techniques followed by electron probe X-ray microanalysis. The phase diagram of the binary Al2O3-ZnO system and isothermal sections of the Al2O3-“Fe2O3”-ZnO system at 1250 °C, 1400 °C, and 1550 °C have been constructed and reported for the first time. The extents of solid solutions in the corundum (Al,Fe)2O3, hematite (Fe,Al)2O3, Al2O3*Fe2O3 phase (Al,Fe)2O3, spinel (Al,Fe,Zn)O4, and zincite (Al,Zn,Fe)O primary phase fields have been measured. Corundum, hematite, and Al2O3*Fe2O3 phases dissolve less than 1 mol pct zinc oxide. The limiting compositions of Al2O3*Fe2O3 phase measured in this study at 1400 °C are slightly nonstoichiometric, containing more Al2O3 then previously reported. Spinel forms an extensive solid solution in the Al2O3-“Fe2O3”-ZnO system in air with increasing temperature. Zincite was found to dissolve up to 7 mole pct of aluminum in the presence of iron at 1550 °C in air. A meta-stable Al2O3-rich phase of the approximate composition Al8FeZnO14+x was observed at all of the conditions investigated. Aluminum dissolved in the zincite in the presence of iron appears to suppress the transformation from a round to platelike morphology.

We have developed a new non-polar synthesis for lead sulfide (PbS) quantum-cubes in the conjugated polymer poly-2-methoxy, 5-(2-ethyl-hexyloxy-p-phenylenevinylene) MEH-PPV. The conducting polymer acts to template and control the quantum-cube growth. Transmission electron microscopy of the composites has shown a bimodal distribution of cube sizes between 5 and 15 nm is produced with broad optical absorption from 300 to 650 nm. Photoluminescence suggests electronic coupling between the cubes and the conducting polymer matrix. The synthesis and initial characterization are presented in this paper. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. High-quality nanometer thick ultramicroporous membranes were prepared from silica sol-gel processes and tested for the permeation of binary gas mixtures of He, H-2, CO2, and CH4 across different temperature and partial pressure regimens. Pore size distribution by molecular probing showed that the majority of pore sizes had dimensions below 2.9 Angstrom. In 50:50 binary mixtures, the fluxes of gases increased as a function of temperature, indicating an activated transport mechanism. The ultramicroporous membranes showed high selectivities at 150 degreesC for He/CO2 (30), He/CH4 (93), H-2/CO2 (10), and H-2/CH4 (9) with lower selectivities for CO2/CH4 (5). High activation energies (E-a) were observed for the permeance of 50:50 binary mixtures containing He and H-2 of 22.1-27.5 and 17.6-23.1 kJ.mol(-1), respectively. The E-a for the permeance of the total mixture approached the E-a for the permeance of the molecule with the smaller kinetic diameter (He or H-2).
