This poster informs about the dangers of taking cocaine stating: 'Cocaine is highly addictive. It's also a local anaesthetic. So you keep doing it but you can't feel it. Gross, but it happens'. It also provides contact details for the National Drugs Helpline. Tel: 0800 776600.

This leaflet provides step-by-step instructions on using the Faecal ImmunochemicalTest (FIT) for bowel cancer screening. This kit is slightly different to the one we usually use as part of Northern Ireland's bowel cancer screening programme. It is easier to complete for people who are partially sighted and is sent following discussion with the screening helpline team.

We identify a number of meanings of "Open", as part of the motivating rationale for a social media space tuned for learning, called SocialLearn. We discuss why online social learning seems to be emerging so strongly at this point, explore features of social learning, and identify some of the dimensions that we believe characterize the social learning design space, before describing the emerging design concept and implementation.

Background and Aims: The international EEsAI study group iscurrently developing the first activity index specific forEosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE). So far histologic assessment inEoE i s not standardized but urgently needed to harmonizehistologic endpoints i n clinical trials. G oal: To develop andevaluate the EEsAI histopathology questionnaire. Methods: B ased o n multiple Delphi r ounds w ith national a ndinternational ( Europe and North America) E oE e xperthistopathologists and gastroenterologists, w e have d evelopedthe EEsAI histopathology questionnaire. Results: T he EEsAI histopathology questionnaire t akes i ntoaccount the following items: number of eosinphils per highpower field, pattern of i nflammation, eosinophil abscesses, basal l ayer e nlargement, and lamina propria f ibrosis. D istinctdefinitions a nd categories f or every item were established byagreement among experts. EoE expert pathologists had amedian of 22 minutes to complete the questionnaire and judgedit as well feasible. The histopathology questionnaire was pilotedin 20 patients and is currently evaluated in a cohort of 150 adultEoE patients. Conclusions: T he EEsAI histopathology questionnaire is thefirst tool that assesses EoE severity according to clearly definedhistologic criteria. These definitions, as well as their categories, established by i nternational E oE e xpert pathologists, w illstandardize h istologic EoE s everity assessment and therebyfacilitate the comparison of histologic outcome measures inclinical trials.

This paper presents a theoretical and empirical analysis of strategic competition in retail banking when some of the financial firms are non-profit organisations that invest in social activities. Banking literature about competition is fairly large, but the strategic interaction between profit maximizing and non profit maximizers has not been extensively analysed except for Purroy and Salas (1999). In this paper, a completely different approach is taken. An adaptation of Hotelling’s two stage model of spatial competition is developed to take into account consumer perceptions respect to the two different types of financial institutions. The empirical analysis confirms that consumers take into account other features different from the price, such as social contribution or closer service to make a deposit or mortgage decision. These conclusions are of interest in the debate about a firm’s social or ethical activities. It is shown that if consumers value social activities, firms can improv

The current persistence of Triatoma infestans, and therefore of Chagas disease transmission, in the Andean valleys of Bolivia and the Gran Chaco (precisely where wild populations of the vector are widespread), indicates a possible relationship between these two occurrences. This paper provides an overview of the current knowledge regarding wild T. infestans in Bolivia. The different morphs of the wild vector, their known distributions and some traits of their biology and ecology are presented. Particularly interesting is the considerable behavioural and chromatic plasticity that is displayed by wild T. infestans. According to the biogeographic region, different morphs of the vector occur in rupicolous habitats (common form and Mataral morph in Andean wild T. infestans) or arboreal ones ("dark morph" populations from the Chaco). The high genetic variability found at the microgeographical scale in Andean wild T. infestans favours the hypothesis that the Andes were the centre of origin and dispersal of T. infestans throughout South America. The relevant question regarding the origin of domestic populations is also addressed. Finally, current considerations of the epidemiological significance of wild T. infestans are discussed in the context of recent discoveries. Even if several observations support the epidemiological risk represented by wild T. infestans, the climatic and environmental conditions of their distribution areas would not favour the continued flow of triatomines between sylvatic refuges and domestic environments.

In the acute phase and in the chronic forms of Chagas disease, the etiological diagnosis may be performed by detection of the parasite using direct or indirect parasitological methods and by the presence of antibodies in the serum by way of serological tests. Several techniques are easily available, ranging from the simplest wet smear preparation to immuno-enzymatic assays with recombinant antigens that will meet most diagnostic needs. Other tests under evaluation include a molecular test using polymerase chain reaction, which has shown promising results and may be used as a confirmatory test both in the acute and chronic phases of the disease. Better rapid tests are needed for diagnosis, some of which are already under evaluation. Additionally, there is a need for tools that can identify patients cured shortly after specific treatment. Other needs include a marker for prognosis and early diagnosis of congenital transmission.

The sandfly Phlebotomus perniciosus is the most widespread vector of Leishmania infantum in Spain. Laboratory colonisation represents the most feasible source of information on the biology of these insects, but in conducting any study, the density of individuals in the colony may drop to such an extent that it is sometimes difficult to recover the initial population levels. A new technique was tested for the recovery of sandfly eggs in three different colonies; the recovery rate was studied by comparing the standard method of mass rearing with this new method of colony management. The results demonstrate a mean increase of 18.4% in adult production, a growth in colony productivity that justifies the inclusion of this process in the routine maintenance of any colony of sandflies.

Wake-promoting drugs are widely used to treat excessive daytime sleepiness. The neuronal pathways involved in wake promotion are multiple and often not well characterized. We tested d-amphetamine, modafinil, and YKP10A, a novel wake-promoting compound, in three inbred strains of mice. The wake duration induced by YKP10A and d-amphetamine depended similarly on genotype, whereas opposite strain differences were observed after modafinil. Electroencephalogram (EEG) analysis during drug-induced wakefulness revealed a transient approximately 2 Hz slowing of theta oscillations and an increase in beta-2 (20-35 Hz) activity only after YKP10A. Gamma activity (35-60 Hz) was induced by all drugs in a drug- and genotype-dependent manner. Brain transcriptome and clustering analyses indicated that the three drugs have both common and specific molecular signatures. The correlation between specific EEG and gene-expression signatures suggests that the neuronal pathways activated to stay awake vary among drugs and genetic background.

How to summarize and facilitate the implementation of national and international guidelines in clinical practice? To adress these issues, we present a summary of dyslipidemia management for general practitioners. To achieve these aims, we adopted strategies based on international and national guidelines and focused on clinical applications which implies to choose specific options, such as the use of cardiovascular risk score and specific therapies as first options.
