This report aims to describe the first case allochthonous of visceral leishmanisasis (VL) in the municipality of Campo Mourao, Parana, Brazil, in a canine, Boxer breed, with eye and skin lesions, lymphadenomegaly and splenomegaly, attended at Veterinary Hospital at the Faculdade Integrado de Campo Mourao, after residing in the city of Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul. The diagnosis of the disease was based on direct observation of amastigotes of Leishmania spp., in popliteal lymph nodes, suggesting that a case of VL, since the animal came from an endemic area for the disease. The migration of infected dogs from endemic regions to areas unaffected becomes a problem for public health, since it may allow the installation of new outbreaks by encouraging the spread of disease throughout the country.

Juvenile cellulitis or juvenile sterile granulomatous lymphadenitis is a rare disorder that affects puppies between three weeks to six months years old. Clinical signs include alopecia, edema, papules, pustules and crusts especially on eyelids. Definitive diagnosis requires cytological and histological evaluation and early and aggressive therapy is recommended, once scars after recovery can be severe. The choice treatment is the high dose of corticosteroids use such as prednisone. Three animals of canine species were attended at the Veterinary Hospital Clinical Small Animal Service presenting different clinical signs. Hemogram, skin lesions and submandibular lymph nodes cytological examination was collected and analyzed. The treatment was instituted, using cephalexin (22mg/kg, twice daily) up to control of secondary bacterial infection, and prednisone (2mg/kg, once a day) until clinical resolution. Complete cure was obtained at the end of treatment. The aim of this work is to report three clinical cases of juvenile cellulitis in dogs.

Calves aged 3 mth were readily infected with oocysts and cysts of Toxoplasma gondii administered by the oral route. Fever, respiratory distress, nasal discharge, and hyperemia of the conjunctivas were the most significant clinical signs noted in the infected animals. Parasitemia was demonstrated in all infected calves. It occurred on different days and up to 62 days after the infection. Toxoplasma was demonstrated in tissues of all infected calves, and the organ most frequently parasitized was the lymph node. Parasitism of the retina was demonstrated in 2 calves. All infected animals had antibody against T. gondii in their serum. The Sabin-Feldman dye test and the indirect immunofluorescent test were both useful in detecting antitoxoplasma antibody.

In the present work the authors studied the morphology of the cervical lymphatic system using 26 new-born white rats of both sexes. The studies were performed by injecting China-ink under the skin of the angle of mouth and dorsal region of the auricle in order to visualize and then to proceed the dissection of lymph vessels and nodes under stereoscopic microscope. Morphological descriptions of superficial and deep lymph vessels and lymph nodes were made, recording: a dense capillary network of the superficial system that joins to larger branches going to the submaxillary lymph nodes, generally the only ones on each side; those lymph nodes send efferent branches to deep cervical lymph nodes generally also the only ones on each side; those lymph nodes give efferent branches which form the jugular lymphatic sac that joins the jugulo-subclavian junction; the jugular lymphatic sac may receive branches from the plexus, which accompany the omocervical and external jugular veins and branches coming from the thoracic limb, as well as may join the branches coming from the thorax and the branches in most of the cases form plexus branches and seldom appear by themselves.

Walker's 256 carcinoma changes its behaviour as a consequence of various factors. In this paper the authors compare the evolution of 2 lines of the tumor: WM 16 (muscular) and Christ Hospital (ascitic) both inoculated intramuscularly. Animals receiving line WM 16 had a severe rapidly progressive evolution dying around day 14 after inoculation with diffuse metastases to lymph nodes (65% of animals), kidneys (53%), spleen (50%), lungs (46.5%), liver (45%), bone marrow (44.8%), in 56% of the animals there were circulating tumoral cells. Animals receiving the Christ Hospital line survived up to 40 days, metastases were limited to lungs (48.7%) and lymph nodes (31.7%) and only in 2 of 45 animals circulating tumoral cells were observed.

The effect of Ketoconazole (KTZ) on the hamster experimental intratesticular paracoccidioidomycosis was studied employing different treatment schedules. KTZ long course treatment beginning at an early stage of the infection was effective in preventing fungal proliferation, dissemination to lymph nodes, spleen and kidneys, and in maintaining low levels of humoral and cellular specific immune responses. KTZ short course treatment starting at an advanced stage of disease resulted in a more severe histopathological picture without significant changes in the immunological profile. The drug prolonged the life span of hamsters infected with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, but did not prevent mortality. Toxic necrosis of the bone marrow occurred in normal animals receiving 120 mg/kg/day of KTZ but with lower doses no morphologic alterations were observed in heart, lungs, kidneys, adrenals, spleen, liver, intestine or bone marrow. © 1984 Dr W. A model for pulmonary paracoccidioidomycosis in the hamster is described. The disease was induced by intratracheal inoculation of 1.7 x 10(5) viable yeast forms of P. brasiliensis. Lung histopathology, dissemination lesions and humoral and cellular immune responses were investigated at intervals up to 24 weeks after infection. Humoral immunity was studied by immunodiffusion and complement fixation tests. Cell-mediated immunity was evaluated in vitro by the macrophage migration inhibition test in the presence of phytohaemagglutinin and P. brasiliensis soluble antigen, and in vivo by the paracoccidioidin test. Thirty out of 35 infected animals (85.7%) developed pulmonary paracoccidioidomycosis. Dissemination lesions were observed in regional lymph nodes (82.8%), liver (8.5%) and spleen (5.7%). Lung involvement was mainly around bronchi and vessels. Regional lymph nodes were severely involved from the fourth week on, acquiring a pseudotumoral aspect at later stages. Specific antibodies were detected from the fourth week on, with titres increasing progressively. The cellular immune response to phytohaemagglutinin was intact throughout the experiment and the response to P. brasiliensis antigen was already detectable by the second week and remained positive to the end of the experiment. The skin test became positive from the fourth week on. Inoculation by the intratracheal route represents a highly effective way of infecting hamsters with P. brasiliensis, with the induction of localized disease, good antibody production and intact cell immunity.

The primary complex like Ghon was observed in a child's clinical roentgenographic study. C.S., white, male, 6 years old, was born in Curitiba (PR), Brazil and living in Guaratingueta (SP), Brazil, developed common cold, bimodal diary fever, chills, shake and sweats. Dyspnea, cough with general lymphadenopathy. Foot and right shoulder arthralgias. Six months ago visited a cave, equitation practice, dog and cat contacts and no transfusion, frontal sweats, fever (38.4 degrees C). T.A. was 8/6, tachycardia in generalized lymphadenopathy. Cardiopulmonary system was normal, mesogastric tumoral mass, hepatosplenomegaly and no ascites. Bone marrow with eosinophilia; nodule demonstrated presence of P. brasiliensis, hypoalbuminemia; hyperglobulinemia; anemia; leukocytosis with eosinophilia. Immunodiffusion with exoantigen 43 kd of P. brasiliensis was 1/32. Primary complex like Ghon was observed in interstitial pneumonia followed by mediastinal and mesogastric mass (35 to 40 days). Clavicular osteolytic lesions (45 to 60 days) appeared during paracoccidioidomycosis therapy. Recovery was observed 2 months after treatment of acute infantile paracoccidioidomycosis.

We analyzed clinicopathologic data, immunophenotype, and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) status in 96 cases of Hodgkin disease (HD) in juveniles (younger than 20 years) and adults (20 years or older) from 2 distinctive states in Brazil. We studied 34 juvenile (group 1) and 16 adult (group 2) cases from Ceara and 31 juvenile (group 3) and 15 adult (group 4) cases from São Paulo. Ceara has a socioeconomic profile similar to a developing country; São Paulo is in better economic condition. Mixed cellularity (MC) was the major histologic subtype among groups 1 (22 [65%]), 3 (21 [68%]), and 4 (7 [47%]); nodular sclerosis (NS) was more frequent in group 2 (8 [50%]). EBV infection was observed in 61 cases (64%), including the following (among others): group 1, MC, 22 (65%) and NS, 4 (12%); group 2, NS, 3 (19%) and MC, 2 (12%); group 3, MC, 16 (52%) and NS, 1 (3%); and group 4, MC, 7 (47%). There was predominance of EBV+ HD cases in group 1 compared with group 3. HD in Brazilian patients is highly associated with EBV infection, but geographic differences reflect histologic subtypes and age distribution.

The poisonous plant Baccharis coridifotia causes necrosis in lymphoid tissues and the gastrointestinal tract of cattle, horses, sheep and rabbits. An experimental poisoning of mice was undertaken to establish an experimental model in a laboratory animal specie. A single 5 to 8-g/kg dose of a suspension of the plant was administered by gavage to II mice. To 3 other control mice, the same volume of water was administered. Plant-dosed mice manifested clinical effects after 12 h: tachipnea, trembles, dehydration and prostration. Most of the dosed mice died 14 to 33 h after plant administration-3 survived for 12 d. Six mice had remarkable necrosis of the germinative center of secondary follicles in lymph nodes and spleen; 3 mice had necrosis of lymphoid tissues in intestine and thymus. Mice reproduce most of the lesions observed in naturally poisoned cattle and the use of this specie as an experimental model is valid.

Liver and lymph nodes injuries characterized by clusters of foamy macrophages, some of them containing birefringent crystals, were observed in cattle fed on Brachiaria brizantha hay. The cattle were from an experimental group poisoned with Senecio brasiliensis known to cause hepatic fibrosis and hepatocyte megalocytosis. One of the animals developed photosensitivity but the exact cause wasn't determined since both plants were fed. The foamy macrophages were present from the 30th d of feeding. Early appearance of these lesions may be particular to the animal specie used or due to the presence of both toxic plants.
