This paper analyzes the relationship between spatial density of economic activity and interregional differences in the productivity of industrial labour in Spain during the period 1860-1999. In the spirit of Ciccone and Hall (1996) and Ciccone (2002), we analyze the evolution of this relationship over the long term in Spain. Using data on the period 1860-1999 we show the existence of an agglomeration effect linking the density of economic activity with labour productivity in the industry. This effect was present since the beginning of the industrialization process in the middle of the 19th century but has been decreasing over time. The estimated elasticity of labour productivity with respect to employment density was close to 8% in the subperiod 1860-1900, reduces to a value of around 7% in the subperiod 1914-1930, to 4% in the subperiod 1965-1979 and becomes insignificant in the final subperiod 1985-1999. At the end of the period analyzed there is no evidence of the existence of net agglomeration effects in the industry. This result could be explained by an important increase in the congestion effects in large industrial metropolitan areas that would have compensated the centripetal or agglomeration forces at work. Furthermore, this result is also consistent with the evidence of a dispersion of industrial activity in Spain during the last decades.

New economic geography models show that there may be a strong relationship between economic integration and the geographical concentration of industries. Nevertheless, this relationship is neither unique nor stable, and may follow a ?-shaped pattern in the long term. The aim of the present paper is to analyze the evolution of the geographical concentration of manufacturing across Spanish regions during the period 1856-1995. We construct several geographical concentration indices for different points in time over these 140 years. The analysis is carried out at two levels of aggregation, in regions corresponding to the NUTS-II and NUTS-III classifications. We confirm that the process of economic integration stimulated the geographical concentration of industrial activity. Nevertheless, the localization coefficients only started to fall after the beginning of the integration of the Spanish Economy into the international markets in the mid-70s, and this new path was not interrupted by Spain¿s entry in the European Union some years later

The development of new rail systems in the first part of the 21st century is the result of a wide range of trends that are making it increasingly difficult to maintain regional mobility using the two dominant intercity travel modes, auto and air. These trends include the changing character of the economic structure of industry. The character of the North American industrial structure is moving rapidly from a manufacturing base to a service based economy. This is increasing the need for business travel while the increase in disposable income due to higher salaries has promoted increased social and tourist travel. Another trend is the change in the regulatory environment. The trend towards deregulation has dramatically reduced the willingness of the airlines to operate from smaller airports and the level of service has fallen due to the creation of hub and spoke systems. While new air technology such as regional jets may mitigate this trend to some degree in medium-size airports, smaller airports will continue to lose out. Finally, increasing environmental concerns have reduced the ability of the automobile to meet intercity travel needs because of increased suburban congestion and limited highway capacity in big cities. Against this background the rail mode offers new options due to first, the existing rail rights-of-way offering direct access into major cities that, in most cases, have significant capacity available and, second, a revolution in vehicle technology that makes new rail rolling stock faster and less expensive to purchase and operate. This study is designed to evaluate the potential for rail service making an important contribution to maintaining regional mobility over the next 30 to 50 years in Iowa. The study evaluates the potential for rail service on three key routes across Iowa and assesses the impact of new train technology in reducing costs and improving rail service. The study also considers the potential for developing the system on an incremental basis. The service analysis and recommendations do not involve current Amtrak intercity service. That service is presumed to continue on its current route and schedule. The study builds from data and analyses that have been generated for the Midwest Rail Initiative (MWRI) Study. For example, the zone system and operating and capital unit cost assumptions are derived from the MWRI study. The MWRI represents a cooperative effort between nine Midwest states, Amtrak and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) contracting with Transportation Economics & Management Systems, Inc. to evaluate the potential for a regional rail system. BACKGROUND: Biological agents (BA) have recently completed the treatment options in auto-inflammatory diseases (AID) in children with the aim to improve the outcome. TNF-α blocking agents have been the first BA successfully used in children. However, other biological agents targeting cytokines including IL-1 and IL-6 have been shown to be effective (anti-IL-1/6), especially in AID like systemiconset juvenile arthritis (SoJIA) or cryopyrine-associated periodic syndrome (CAPS). In Switzerland, Etanercept has been approved for the treatment of JIA since 2000 and Canakinumab for the treatment of paediatric CAPS since 2009.OBJECTIVES: Evaluation of the use of biological agents in AID in Western Switzerland.METHODS: We selected all patients with AID seen in the Réseau Romand de Rhumatologie Pédiatrique (Lausanne, Geneva, Aigle, Sion, and Neuchâtel) who were treated with the following BA: anti-TNF-α (Etanercept, Infliximab, Adalimumab) and Abatacept, and anti-IL-1/6 (Anakinra, Canakinumab, Tocilizumab). We looked at minor and major adverse events and the activity of the disease before and after treatment with BA and with special regards on anti-IL-1/6.RESULTS: Among 921 children and adolescents followed between 2004 and 2010, we selected 85 patients with AID (PFAPA: 40, FMF: 6, HyperIgD: 1, CAPS: 3, SoJIA: 34). Only patients with CAPS and SoJIA were treated with BA. They had a mean age of 9 years (3-22) and F: M ratio of 1.6:1. 7 patients were treated with one BA, 6 patients with 2 different BAs and 3 with 3 BAs. 3 patients with CAPS were treated with anti-IL-1 and responded very well. 13 SoJIA patients were treated with BA (anti-TNF-α: 8, Abatacept: 1, anti-IL-1/6: 8). 4 patients treated by anti-TNF-α were switched to anti-IL-1/6 because of lack of response to treatment (cf Table 1). We did not have any serious adverse events and no serious infections.CONCLUSIONS: Patients with SoJIA and CAPS clearly benefit from treatment with BA. General tolerance was good. In the CAPS group the response to IL-1 was excellent. In SoJIA, 3/4 patients, switched from anti-TNF-α to anti-IL-1/6 for lack of therapeutic response, did not respond well to the second medication. These patientsseem to represent a population relatively resistant to treatment with BA. Due to the low number of patients in our cohort, the response to BA in SoJIA patients non-responder to anti- TNF-α agents should be further studied.

Este artigo procura estudar a associação entre auto-estima e violências que ocorrem no ambiente escolar. Apresenta resultados obtidos em pesquisa realizada em escolas públicas e particulares de São Gonçalo, Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Emprega basicamente metodologia quantitativa (inquérito epidemiológico com uma amostra de 1.686 alunos) com alunos das 7ª e 8ª séries do ensino fundamental e 1º e 2º anos do ensino médio. Os resultados indicam que alunos com baixa auto-estima relacionam-se de forma pior com colegas e professores que os pares de elevada auto-estima, além de se colocarem mais freqüentemente na posição de vítimas de violência na escola e terem mais dificuldade de se sentir bem no espaço escolar. São apontados alguns programas nacionais que têm tentado abordar o problema da violência na escola.

Estudo com objetivo de identificar os valores presentes na escola e verificar quais interações favorecem a construção e ou a manutenção dos valores morais em particular o auto-respeito. Com enfoque teórico da Psicologia Socioistórica, a investigação apoiou-se nos estudos sobre moralidade de Jean Piaget e Yves de la Taille e constatou que coexistem na escola interações favorecedoras e não favorecedoras da construção de valores morais sendo que as últimas são mais freqüentes.
