The molecular structures of NbOBr3, NbSCl3, and NbSBr3 have been determined by gas-phase electron diffraction (GED) at nozzle-tip temperatures of 250 degreesC, taking into account the possible presence of NbOCl3 as a contaminant in the NbSCl3 sample and NbOBr3 in the NbSBr3 sample. The experimental data are consistent with trigonal-pyramidal molecules having C-3v symmetry. Infrared spectra of molecules trapped in argon or nitrogen matrices were recorded and exhibit the characteristic fundamental stretching modes for C-3v species. Well resolved isotopic fine structure (Cl-35 and Cl-37) was observed for NbSCl3, and for NbOCl3 which occurred as an impurity in the NbSCl3 spectra. Quantum mechanical calculations of the structures and vibrational frequencies of the four YNbX3 molecules (Y = O, S; X = Cl, Br) were carried out at several levels of theory, most importantly B3LYP DFT with either the Stuttgart RSC ECP or Hay-Wadt (n + 1) ECP VDZ basis set for Nb and the 6-311 G* basis set for the nonmetal atoms. Theoretical values for the bond lengths are 0.01-0.04 Angstrom longer than the experimental ones of type r(a), in accord with general experience, but the bond angles with theoretical minus experimental differences of only 1.0-1.5degrees are notably accurate. Symmetrized force fields were also calculated. The experimental bond lengths (r(g)/Angstrom) and angles (angle(alpha)/deg) with estimated 2sigma uncertainties from GED are as follows. NbOBr3: r(Nb=O) = 1.694(7), r(Nb-Br) = 2.429(2), angle(O=Nb-Br) = 107.3(5), angle(Br-Nb-Br) = 111.5(5). NbSBr3: r(Nb=S) = 2.134(10), r(Nb-Br) = 2.408(4), angle(S=Nb-Br) = 106.6(7), angle(Br-Nb-Br) = 112.2(6). NbSCl3: Nb=S) = 2.120(10), r(Nb-Cl) = 2.271(6), angle(S=Nb-Cl) = 107.8(12), angle(Cl-Nb-Cl) = 111.1(11).

A new family of antimony sulfides, incorporating the macrocyclic tetramine 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane ( cyclam), has been prepared by a hydrothermal method. [C10N4H26][Sb4S7] (1), [Ni(C10N4H24)][Sb4S7] (2), and [Co(C10N4H24)](x)[C10N4H26](1-x)[Sb4S7] (0.08 <= x <= 0.74) (3) have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, thermogravimetry, and analytical electron microscopy. All three materials possess the same novel three-dimensional Sb4S72- framework, constructed from layers of parallel arrays of Sb4S84- chains stacked at 90 to one another. In 1, doubly protonated macrocyclic cations reside in the channel structure of the antimonysulfide framework. In 2 and 3, the cyclam acts as a ligand, chelating the divalent transition- metal cation. Analytical and X-ray diffraction data indicate that the level of metal incorporation in 2 is effectively complete, whereas in 3, both metalated and nonmetalated forms of the macrocycle coexist within the structure.

Four new trinuclear copper(II) complexes, [(CuL1)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(2)center dot H2O (1), [(CuL2)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](CIO4)(2) (2), [(CuL3)(3)-(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(4)center dot H2O (3), and [(CuL4)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(2)center dot H2O (4), where HL1 = 8-amino-4,7,7-trimethyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one, HL2 = 7-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one, HL3 = 7(ethylamino)-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one, and HL4 = 4-methyl-7-(methylamino)-5-azahept-3-en-2-one, have been derived from the four tridentate Schiff bases (HL1, HL2, HL3, and HL4) and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. For all compounds, the cationic part is trinuclear with a CU3OH core held by three carbonyl oxygen bridges between each pair of copper(II) atoms. The copper atoms are five-coordinate with a distorted square-pyramidal geometry; the equatorial plane consists of the bridging oxygen atom of the central OH group together with three atoms (N, N, O) from one ligand whereas an oxygen atom of a second ligand occupies the axial position. Magnetic measurements have been performed in the 2-300 K temperature range. The experimental data could be satisfactorily reproduced by using an isotropic exchange model, H = -J(S1S2+S2S3+S1S3) yielding as best-fit parameters: J = -66.7 and g = 2.19 for 1, J = -36.6 and g = 2.20 for 2, J = -24.5 and g = 2.20 for 3, and J = -14.9 and g = 2.05 for 4. EPR spectra at low temperature show the existence of spin frustration in complexes 3 and 4, but it has not been possible to carry out calculations of the antisymmetric exchange parameter, G, from magnetic data. In frozen methanolic solution, at 4 K, hyperfine splitting in all complexes and spin frustration in complex 4 seem to be confirmed. ((c) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The synthesis, characterisation, X-ray single crystal structures and magnetic properties of three new basal-apical mu(2)-1,1-azide-bridged complexes [(CuLN3)-N-1](2) (1), [(CuLN3)-N-2](2) (2) and [(CuLN3)-N-3](2) (3) with very similar tridentate Schiff-base blocking ligands {HL1 = N-[2-(ethylamino) ethyl] salicylaldimine; HL2 = 7-(ethylamino)-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one; HL3 = 7-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one} have been reported [complex 1: monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 8.390(2), b = 7.512(2), c = 19.822(6) Angstrom, beta = 91.45(5)degrees; complex 2: monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 8.070(9), b = 9.787(12), c = 15.743(17) A, beta = 98.467(10)degrees; complex 3: monoclinic, P2(1)/n, a = 5.884(7), b = 16.147(18), c = 11.901(12) Angstrom, beta = 90.050(10)degrees]. The structures consist of neutral dinuclear entities resulting from the pairing of two mononuclear units through end-on azide bridges connecting an equatorial position of one copper centre to an axial position of the other, The copper ions adopt a (4+1) square-based geometry in all the complexes. In complex 2, there is no inter-dimer hydrogen-bonding. However, complexes 1 and 3 form two different supramolecular structures in which the dinuclear entities are linked by H-bonds giving one-dimensional systems. Variable temperature (300-2 K) magnetic-susceptibility measurements and magnetisation measurements at 2 K reveal that all three complexes have antiferromagnetic coupling. Magneto-structural correlations have been made taking into consideration both the azido bridging ligands and the existence of intermolecular hydrogen bonds. ((C) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The blue coloured complex [Cu(HL)(H2O)(ClO4)]ClO.H2O.MeOH (1.H2O.MeOH) has been synthesised in excellent yields by reacting Cu(ClO4)(2).6H(2)O with N,N-bis(2-methylpyridyl)(3,5-dimethyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)amine (HL) in methanol. The same reaction, when carried out in the presence of sodium azide, afforded a dark-blue complex of formula [Cu-2(HL)(2)(mu-1,1-N-3)(2)](ClO4)(2) (2). The crystal and molecular structures of the complexes have been solved. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility data in the range of 2-300 K for 2 reveal the existence of an antiferromagnetic interaction through an end-on azido linker. Temperature-dependent susceptibility studies for 2 were fitted using the Bleaney-Bowers expression, which led to the parameters J = -3.2 cm(-1), g = 2.12 and R = 2.14 x 10(-4). The new erbium(III) complex of picolinic acid (Hpic), ["Bu4N][Er(pic)(4)].5.5H(2)O, was synthesized and the crystal structure determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound was further characterized using IR, Raman, H-1 NMR and elemental analysis. The picolinate ligands (pic(-)) are coordinated through N,O-chelation to the erbium cations, as shown by X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic results, leading to an eight coordinate complex. Photoluminescence measurements were performed for this compound which exhibits infrared emission. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Reaction of the tridentate ONO Schiff-base ligand 2-hydroxybenzoylhydrazone of 2-hydroxybenzoylhydrazine (H2L) with VO(acac)(2) in ethanol medium produces the oxoethoxovanadium(V) complex [VO(OEt)L] (A), which reacts with pyridine to form [VO(OEt)L center dot(py)] (1). Complex 1 is structurally characterized. It has a distorted octahedral O4N2 coordination environment around the V(V) acceptor center. Both complexes A and 1 in ethanol medium react with neutral monodentate Lewis bases 2-picoline, 3-picoline, 4-picoline, 4-amino pyridine, imidazole, and 4-methyl imidazole, all of which are stronger bases than pyridine, to produce dioxovanadium(V) complexes of general formula BH[VO2L]. Most of these dioxo complexes are structurally characterized, and the complex anion [VO2L](-) is found to possess a distorted square pyramidal structure. When a solution/suspension of a BH[VO2L] complex in an alcohol (ROH) is treated with HCl in the same alcohol, it is converted into the corresponding monooxoalkoxo complex [ O(OR)L], where R comes from the alcohol used as the reaction medium. Both complexes A and 1 produce the 4,4'-bipyridine-bridged binuclear complex [VO(OEt)L](2)(mu-4,4'-bipy) (2), which, to the best of our knowledge, represents the first report of a structurally characterized 4,4'-bipyridine-bridged oxovanadium(V) binuclear complex. Two similar binuclear oxovanadium(V) complexes 3 and 4 are also synthesized and characterized. All these binuclear complexes (2-4), on treatment with base B, produce the corresponding mononuclear dioxovanadium(V) complexes (5-10).

A simple general route of obtaining very stable octacoordinated non-oxovanadium( IV) complexes of the general formula VL2 (where H2L is a tetradentate ONNO donor) is presented. Six such complexes (1-6) are adequately characterized by elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, and various spectroscopic techniques. One of these compounds (1) has been structurally characterized. The molecule has crystallographic 4 symmetry and has a dodecahedral structure existing in a tetragonal space group P4n2. The non-oxo character and VL2 stoichiometry for all of the complexes are established from analytical and mass spectrometric data. In addition, the non-oxo character is clearly indicated by the complete absence of the strong nu(v=o) band in the 925-1025 cm(-1) region, which is a signature of all oxovanadium species. The complexes are quite stable in open air in the solid state and in solution, a phenomenon rarely observed in non-oxovanadium(IV) or bare vanadium(IV) complexes.

Two new silver-antimony sulfides, [C2H9N2][Ag2SbS3] (1) and [C2H9N2](2)[Ag5Sb3S8] (2), have been prepared solvothermally in the presence of ethylenediamine and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, and elemental analysis. Compound 1 crystallizes in the space group Pn (a = 6.1781(1) Angstrom, b =11.9491(3) Angstrom, c = 6.9239(2) Angstrom, =111.164(1)degrees) and 2 in the space group Pm (a = 6.2215(2) Angstrom, b = 15.7707(7) Angstrom, c = 11.6478(5) Angstrom, beta = 92.645(2)degrees). The structure of 1 consists of chains of fused five-membered Ag2SbS2 rings linked to form layers, between which the template molecules reside. Compound 2 contains honeycomb-like sheets of fused silver-antimony-sulfide six-membered rings linked to form double layers. The idealized structure can be considered to be an ordered defect derivative of that of lithium bismuthide, Li3Bi, and represents a new solid-state structure type.

The effects of isoelectronic replacement of a neutral nitrogen donor atom by an anionic carbon atom in terpyridine ruthenium(II) complexes on the electronic and photophysical properties of the resulting N,C,N'- and C,N,N'-cyclometalated aryl ruthenium(II) complexes were investigated. To this end, a series of complexes was prepared either with ligands containing exclusively nitrogen donor atoms, that is, [Ru(R-1-tpy)(R-2-tpy)](2+) (R-1, R-2 = H, CO2Et), or bearing either one N,C,N'- or C,N,N'-cyclometalated ligand and one tpy ligand, that is, [Ru(R-1-(NCN)-C-Lambda-N-Lambda)(R-2-tpy)](+) and [Ru(R-1-(CNN)-N-Lambda-N-Lambda)(R-2-tpy)](+), respectively. Single-crystal X-ray structure determinations showed that cyclometalation does not significantly alter the overall geometry of the complexes but does change the bond lengths around the ruthenium(II) center, especially the nitrogen-to-ruthenium bond length trans to the carbanion. Substitution of either of the ligands with electron-withdrawing ester functionalities fine-tuned the electronic properties and resulted in the presence of an IR probe. Using trends obtained from redox potentials, emission energies, IR spectroelectrochemical responses, and the character of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals from DFT studies, it is shown that the first reduction process and luminescence are associated with the ester-substituted C,N,N'-cyclometalated ligand in [Ru(EtO2C-(CNN)-N-Lambda-N-Lambda)(tpy)](+). Cyclometalation in an N,C,N'-bonding motif changed the energetic order of the ruthenium d(zx), d(yz), and d(xy) orbitals. The red-shifted absorption in the N,C,N'-cyclometalated complexes is assigned to MLCT transitions to the tpy ligand. The red shift observed upon introduction of the ester moiety is associated with an increase in intensity of low-energy transitions, rather than a red shift of the main transition. Cyclometalation in the C,N,N'-binding motif also red-shifts the absorption, but the corresponding transition is associated with both ligand types. Luminescence of the cyclometalated complexes is relatively independent of the mode of cyclometalation, obeying the energy gap law within each individual series.

6-[4-(2-Methoxyethoxy)phenyl]fulvene (3a) and 6-(4-[2-(di-methylamino)ethoxy]phenyl)fulvene (3b) were prepared as starting materials for the synthesis of three dofferent classes of titanocenes, which are ansa-titanocenes, diarylmethyl-substituted titanicenes and benzyl-substituted titanocenes and benyzyl-subtituted titanocenes. Because the synthetic possibilities seem to be limited, only ansa-titanocene {1,2-bis(cyclopentadienyl)-1,2-bis[4-(2-methoxyethoxy)phenyl]ethanediyl}titanium dichloride (4a) and benzyl-substituted titanocene bis-{[4-(2-methoxyethoxy)benzyl]cyclopentadienyl}titantium(IV) dichloride (6a) were obtained and characterised. The change in the substitution pattern f the phenyl moiety from an oxygen atom to a nitrogen atom had such a big influence on the reaction that not one compound of the threee titanocene classes could be synthesised, and it was also not possible to obtain diarylmethyl-substituted titanocenes with the use of either of the fulvenes. When benzyl-substituted titanocene 6a was tested agianst pig kidney cells (LLC-PK), an antiproliferative effect that result in an IC50 value of 43 mu m, was observed. This IC50 value is in the lower range of the cytotoxicities evaluated for titanocenes up to now. ansa-Titanocene 4a surprisingly showed, when tested on the same cell line, a proliferative effect together with a fast rate of hydrolysis.

In the search for a versatile building block that allows the preparation of heteroditopic tpy-pincer bridging ligands, the synthon 14'-[C6H3(CH2Br)(2)-3,5]-2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine was synthesized. Facile introduction of diphenylphosphanyl groups in this synthon gave the ligand 14'-[C6H3(CH2PPh2)2-3,5]-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine) ([tpyPC(H)Pj). The asymmetric mononuclear complex [Fe(tpy){tpyPC(H)P}](PF6)(2), prepared by selective coordination of [Fe(tpy)Cl-3] to the tpy moiety of [tpyPC(H)P], was used for the synthesis of the heterodimetallic complex [Fe(tpy)(tpyPCP)Ru(tpy)](PFC,)3, which applies the "complex as ligand" approach. Coordination of the ruthenium centre at the PC(H)P-pincer moiety of [Fe(tpy){tpyPC(H)P}](PF6)(2) has been achieved by applying a transcyclometallation procedure. The ground-state electronic properties of both complexes, investigated by cyclic and square-wave voltammetries and UV/Vis spectroscopy, are discussed and compared with those of [Fe(tPY)(2)](PF6)(2) and [Ru(PCP)(tpy)]Cl, which represent the mononuclear components of the heterodinuclear species. An in situ UV/Vis spectroelectrochemical study was performed in order to localize the oxidation and reduction steps and to gain information about the Fe-II-Ru-II communication in the heterodimetallic system [Fe(tpy)(tpyPCP)Ru(tpy)](PF6)(3) mediated by the bridging ligand [tpyPCP]. Both the voltammetric and spectroelectrochemical results point to only very limited electronic interaction between the metal centres in the ground state.

The new square-planar Ni-II-N2O2 complex [Ni(L-Me)] (1(Me)), where L-Me, stands for the dianionic phenolato form of N,N'bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-salicylidene)-4,5-dimethyl-1,2-phenyl- enediamine ((LH2)-L-Me), has been synthesised and fully characterised. X-ray crystallography was also used for the characterisation. The electrochemical one-electron oxidation of 1(Me) produces the thermally stable (within the temperature range 10-295 K) cationic species (1(Me))(+). The UV/Vis and X-band EPR experimental data, supported by DFT calculations, indicate that (1(Me))(+), is best described as a Ni-II monoradical complex and, thus, does NOT exist in a Ni-III ground state, in contrast to its demethylated counterpart [Ni(L-H)](+) (1(H))(+) below 170 K.
