In this work the effect of the interplay between magnetic and structural degrees of freedom in the structural transitions undergone by Ni2MnGa alloy is investigated. Elastic constant and magnetic susceptibility measurements in a magnetic field are presented. A simple phenomenological model is proposed to account for the experimental observations.

We report on the growth of epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7 thin films on X-cut LiNbO3 single crystals. The use of double CeO2/YSZ buffer layers allows a single in-plane orientation of YBa2Cu3O7, and results in superior superconducting properties. In particular, surface resistance Rs values of 1.4 m¿ have been measured at 8 GHz and 65 K. The attainment of such low values of Rs constitutes a key step toward the incorporation of high Tc materials as electrodes in photonic and acoustic devices.

The distribution of Sn4+ cations within the five crystallographic sites of the magnetoplumbite (M) ‐like compound BaFe12−2xCoxSnxO19 has been analyzed using single‐crystal x‐ray‐diffraction data. The species Fe3+ and Co2+ cannot be distinguished using x rays because of their very similar atomic numbers; however, the calculation of the apparent valencies for the different sites allows an insight into the Co2+ cation segregation. The use of previous data from neutron powder diffraction allows a precise picture of the cation distribution, which indicates a pronounced site selectivity for both Sn4+ and Co2+ cations. The Sn4+ cations prefer the 4f2 sites and to a much lower extent the 12k sites, while they do not enter the octahedral 2a sites at all. Co2+ cations are distributed among tetrahedral and octahedral sites displaying a clear preference for the tetrahedral 4f1 sites. Magnetic measurements indicate that the compound still exhibits uniaxial anisotropy with the easy direction parallel to the c axis. Nevertheless, the magnetic structure shows a considerable degree of noncolinearity. A strong reduction of the magnetic anisotropy regarding that of the undoped compound is also detected.

Chemical shifts of protons can report on metabolic transformations such as the conversion of choline to phosphocholine. To follow such processes in vivo, magnetization can be enhanced by dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP). We have hyperpolarized in this manner nitrogen-15 spins in (15)N-labeled choline up to 3.3% by irradiating the 94 GHz electron spin resonance of admixed TEMPO nitroxide radicals in a magnetic field of 3.35 T during ca. 3 h at 1.2 K. The sample was subsequently transferred to a high-resolution magnet, and the enhanced polarization was converted from (15)N to methyl- and methylene protons, using the small (2,3)J((1)H,(15)N) couplings in choline. The room-temperature lifetime of nitrogen polarization in choline, T(1)((15)N) approximately 200 s, could be considerably increased by partial deuteration of the molecule. This procedure enables studies of choline metabolites in vitro and in vivo using DNP-enhanced proton NMR.

BACKGROUND: Optic perineuritis is an uncommon variety of orbital inflammatory disease that is distinct from demyelinating optic neuritis. OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical and radiographic features of idiopathic optic perineuritis, with particular emphasis on those features that help to distinguish this condition from optic neuritis. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 14 patients with optic perineuritis who were seen in 2 neuro-ophthalmology clinics. RESULTS: Patients ranged in age from 24 to 60 years; 5 were older than 50 years. All patients had visual loss, eye pain, or both. The visual acuity was 20/20 or better in 8 of the 15 eyes. The results of visual field testing were normal in 2 eyes, and a paracentral scotoma or an arcuate defect was seen in 7. Magnetic resonance imaging scans demonstrated circumferential enhancement around the optic nerve, sometimes with intraorbital extension. Response to corticosteroids was dramatic; however, 4 patients had a relapse with lowering of the dose. CONCLUSIONS: In contrast to those with optic neuritis, patients with optic perineuritis are often older at onset and are more likely to show sparing of central vision. Magnetic resonance imaging scans demonstrate enhancement around, rather than within, the optic nerve. Response to corticosteroids is more dramatic than in patients with optic neuritis, and patients are more likely to experience recurrence after stopping treatment.

ABSTRACTSchizophrenia is a major psychiatric disorder occurring with a prevalence of 1% in the worldwide population. It develops progressively with psychosis onset in late adolescence or earlyadulthood. The disorder can take many different facets and has a highly diffuse anddistributed neuropathology including deficits in major neurotransmitter systems,myelination, stress regulation, and metabolism. The delayed onset and the heterogeneouspathology suggest that schizophrenia is a developmental disease that arises from interplayof genetic and environmental factors during sensitive periods. Redox dysregulation due to animbalance between pro-oxidants and antioxidant defence mechanisms is among the riskfactors for schizophrenia. Glutathione (GSH) is the major cellular redox regulator andantioxidant. Levels of GSH are decreased in cerebrospinal fluid, prefrontal cortex and postmortemstriatum of schizophrenia patients. Moreover, polymorphisms of the key GSHsynthesizingenzyme, glutamate-cysteine ligase, modifier (GCLM) subunit, are associatedwith the disease, suggesting that GSH deficit is of genetic origin. Here we used miceknockout (KO) for the GCLM gene, which display chronic GSH deficit (~70 to 80% decrease)to investigate the direct link between redox dysregulation and schizophrenia. Accordingly,we evaluated whether GCLM KO compared to normal wildtype mice display behavioralchanges that relate to schizophrenia symptoms and whether their brains showmorphological, functional or metabolic alterations that resemble those in patients.Moreover, we exposed pubertal GCLM mice to repeated mild stress and measured theirhormonal and behavioral stress reactivity. Our data show that chronic GSH deficit isassociated with altered emotion- and stress-related behaviors, deficient prepulse inhibition,pronounced amphetamine-induced hyperlocomotion but normal spatial learning andworking memory. These changes represent important schizophrenia endophenotypes.Moreover, this particular pattern of change indicates impairment of the ventralhippocampus (VH) and related circuitry as opposed to the dorsal hippocampus (DH), which isimplicated in spatial information processing. This is consistent with a selective deficit ofparvalbumin positive interneurons and gamma oscillation in the VH but not DH. Increasedlevels of circulating stress hormones in KO mice following pubertal stress corroborate VHdysfunction as it is involved in negative feedback control of the stress response. VHstructural and functional deficits are frequently found in the schizophrenic brain. Metabolicevaluation of the developing GCLM KO anterior cortex using in vivo magnetic resonancespectroscopy revealed elevated glutamine (Gln), glutamate (Glu), Gln/Glu and N-acetylaspartate(NAA) during the pre-pubertal period. Similar changes are reported in earlyschizophrenia. Overall, we observe phenotypic anomalies in GSH deficient GCLM KO micethat correspond to major schizophrenia endophenotypes. This supports an important rolefor redox dysregulation in schizophrenia and validates the GCLM KO mouse as model for thedisease. Moreover, our results indicate that puberty may be a sensitive period for redoxsensitivechanges highliting the importance of early intervention. Gln, Gln/Glu, Glu and NAAmay qualify as early metabolic biomarkers to identify young at-risk individuals. Since chronictreatment with NAC normalized most metabolic changes in GCLM KO mice, NAC may be oneadjunct treatment of choice for early intervention in patients.RESUMELa schizophrénie est une maladie psychiatrique majeure avec une prévalence de 1% dans lapopulation. Son développement est progressif, les premières psychoses apparaissant àl'adolescence ou au début de l'âge adulte. La maladie a plusieurs présentations et uneneuropathologie étendue, qui inclut des déficits neurochimiques, métaboliques, de lamyélination et de la régulation du stress. L'émergence tardive et l'hétérogénéité de lapathologie suggèrent que la schizophrénie est une maladie développementale, favorisée pardes facteurs génétiques et environnementaux durant des périodes sensibles. La dérégulationrédox, due à un déséquilibre entre facteurs pro-oxidantes et défenses anti-oxidantes,constitue un facteur de risque. Le glutathion (GSH) est le principal régulateur rédox et antioxidantdes cellules, ses taux sont diminués dans le liquide céphalorachidien, le cortexpréfrontal et le striatum de patients. De plus, des variations du gène codant la sous-unitémodulatrice (GCLM) de la glutamate-cystéine ligase, enzyme de synthèse du GSH, sontassociés la maladie, suggérant que le déficit observé chez les patients est d'originegénétique. Nous avons donc utilisé des souris ayant une délétion du gène GCLM (KO), quiont un déficit chronique en GSH (70-80%), afin d'étudier le lien entre une dérégulation rédoxet la schizophrénie. Nous avons évalué si ces souris présentent des altérationscomportementales analogues aux symptômes de la maladie, et des modificationsstructurelles, fonctionnelles et métaboliques au niveau du cerveau, ressemblant à celles despatients. De plus, nous avons soumis les souris à des stresses modérés durant la puberté,puis mesuré les réponses hormonales et comportementales. Les animaux présentent undéficit pré-attentionnel du traitement des informations moto-sensorielles, un déficit pourcertains apprentissages, une réponse accrue à l'amphétamine, mais leurs mémoires spatialeet de travail sont préservées. Ces atteintes comportementales sont analogues à certainsendophénotypes de la schizophrénie. De plus, ces changements comportementaux sontlargement expliqués par une perturbation morphologique et fonctionnelle de l'hippocampeventral (HV). Ainsi, nous avons observé un déficit sélectif des interneurones immunoréactifsà la parvalbumine et une désynchronisation neuronale dans l'HV. L'hippocampe dorsal,impliqué dans l'orientation spatiale, demeure en revanche intact. L'augmentationd'hormones de stress dans le sang des souris KO suite à un stress prépubertal soutien aussil'hypothèse d'une dysfonction de l'HV, connu pour moduler ce type de réponse. Des déficitsstructurels et fonctionnels dans l'hippocampe antérieur (ventral) ont d'ailleurs été rapportéschez des patients schizophrènes. Par de résonance magnétique, nous avons également suivile profil métabolique du le cortex antérieur au cours du développement postnatal des sourisKO. Ces mesures ont révélé des taux élevés de glutamine (Gln), glutamate (Glu), du ratioGln/Glu, et de N-acétyl-aspartate (NAA) durant la période prépubertale. Des altérationssimilaires sont décrites chez les patients durant la phase précoce. Nous avons donc révélédes anomalies phénotypiques chez les souris GCLM KO qui reflètent certainsendophénotypes de la schizophrénie. Nos résultats appuient donc le rôle d'une dérégulationrédox dans l'émergence de la maladie et le potentiel des souris KO comme modèle. De plus,cette étude met en évidence la puberté comme période particulièrement sensible à unedérégulation rédox, renforçant l'importance d'une intervention thérapeutique précoce. Dansce cadre, Gln, Gln/Glu, Glu and NAA seraient des biomarqueurs clés pour identifier de jeunesindividus à risque. De part son efficacité dans notre modèle, NAC pourrait être unesubstance de choix dans le traitement précoce des patients.

Viruses are known to tolerate wide ranges of pH and salt conditions and to withstand internal pressures as high as 100 atmospheres. In this paper we investigate the mechanical properties of viral capsids, calling explicit attention to the inhomogeneity of the shells that is inherent to their discrete and polyhedral nature. We calculate the distribution of stress in these capsids and analyze their response to isotropic internal pressure (arising, for instance, from genome confinement and/or osmotic activity). We compare our results with appropriate generalizations of classical (i.e., continuum) elasticity theory. We also examine competing mechanisms for viral shell failure, e.g., in-plane crack formation vs radial bursting. The biological consequences of the special stabilities and stress distributions of viral capsids are also discussed.

Työssä tarkastellaanpolttomoottorin venttiilitoimilaitteen toteuttamista sähkömekaanisesti. Tähän mennessä kehitetyt ratkaisut ja rakennetut prototyypit soveltuvat pääosin henkilöautojen vapaasti hengittävien ottomoottoreiden venttiilien ohjaukseen. Venttiilien sähkömekaanisen ohjauksen soveltuvuutta suuriin polttomoottoreihin kuten esimerkiksi voimalaitosdieseleihin on myös tarkasteltu, mutta ongelmaksi muodostuu riittävän suuren magneettisen voiman kehittäminen magneettivuon reitillä esiintyvän suuren ilmavälin takia. Työssä esitetään valmiita ja kehitteillä olevia ratkaisuja polttomoottorin venttiilien ohjaukseen sähkömekaanisesti. Lisäksi käsitellään parannusmahdollisuuksia jo valmiisiin ratkaisuihin ja käydään läpi sähkömekaanisen venttiilinohjauksen ongelmakohtia. Suomeksi ei ole kovin paljon julkaistua materiaalia polttomoottorin venttiilien sähkömekaanisesta ohjauksesta, joten työ tukeutuu pääosin Internetissä julkaistuihin artikkeleihin sekä sähköpostin välityksellä käytyihin keskusteluihin niiden tahojen kanssa, jotka tutkivat ja kehittävät polttomoottorinsähkömekaanista venttiilien ohjausta. Venttiilien sähkömekaanisen ohjauksen tutkiminen tällä hetkellä jakautuu pääpainotteisesti sähkömagneettisen osuuden ja säätöteknisen osuuden tutkimiseen ja kehittämiseen. Työssä ei mennä näiden aihepiirien syvälliseen analysointiin vaan esitetään tämän hetkisentutkimuksen painopisteet ja lähdeviitteet aihepiiriä syventäviin julkaisuihin.

In the present work are reported investigations of structural, magnetic and electronic properties of GaAs/Ga1-xInxAs/GaAs quantum wells (QW) having a 0.5 - 1.8 monolayer thick Mn layer, separated from the quantum well by a 3 nm thick spacer. The structure of the samples is analyzed in details by photoluminescence and high-resolution X-ray difractometry and reflectometry, confirming that Mn atoms are practically absent from the QW. Transport properties and crystal structure are analyzed for the first time for this type of QW structures with so high mobility. Observedconductivity and the Hall effect in quantizing magnetic fields in wide temperature range, defined by transport of holes in the quantum well, demonstrate properties inherent to ferromagnetic systems with spin polarization of charge carriersin the QW. Investigation of the Shubnikov ¿ de Haas and the Hall effects gave the possibility to estimate the energy band parameters such as cyclotron mass andFermi level and calculate concentrations and mobilities of holes and show the high-quality of structures. Magnetic ordering is confirmed by the existence of the anomalous Hall effect.

Breathing-induced bulk motion of the myocardium during data acquisition may cause severe image artifacts in coronary magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). Current motion compensation strategies include breath-holding or free-breathing MR navigator gating and tracking techniques. Navigator-based techniques have been further refined by the applications of sophisticated 2D k-space reordering techniques. A further improvement in image quality and a reduction of relative scanning duration may be expected from a 3D k-space reordering scheme. Therefore, a 3D k-space reordered acquisition scheme including a 3D navigator gated and corrected segmented k-space gradient echo imaging sequence for coronary MRA was implemented. This new zonal motion-adapted acquisition and reordering technique (ZMART) was developed on the basis of a numerical simulation of the Bloch equations. The technique was implemented on a commercial 1.5T MR system, and first phantom and in vivo experiments were performed. Consistent with the results of the theoretical findings, the results obtained in the phantom studies demonstrate a significant reduction of motion artifacts when compared to conventional (non-k-space reordered) gating techniques. In order that the radius and thus ununiform structure of the teeth and otherelectrical and magnetic parts of the machine may be taken into consideration the calculation of an axial flux permanent magnet machine is, conventionally, doneby means of 3D FEM-methods. This calculation procedure, however, requires a lotof time and computer recourses. This study proves that also analytical methods can be applied to perform the calculation successfully. The procedure of the analytical calculation can be summarized into following steps: first the magnet is divided into slices, which makes the calculation for each section individually, and then the parts are submitted to calculation of the final results. It is obvious that using this method can save a lot of designing and calculating time. Thecalculation program is designed to model the magnetic and electrical circuits of surface mounted axial flux permanent magnet synchronous machines in such a way, that it takes into account possible magnetic saturation of the iron parts. Theresult of the calculation is the torque of the motor including the vibrations. The motor geometry and the materials and either the torque or pole angle are defined and the motor can be fed with an arbitrary shape and amplitude of three-phase currents. There are no limits for the size and number of the pole pairs nor for many other factors. The calculation steps and the number of different sections of the magnet are selectable, but the calculation time is strongly depending on this. The results are compared to the measurements of real prototypes. The permanent magnet creates part of the flux in the magnetic circuit. The form and amplitude of the flux density in the air-gap depends on the geometry and material of the magnetic circuit, on the length of the air-gap and remanence flux density of the magnet. Slotting is taken into account by using the Carter factor in the slot opening area. The calculation is simple and fast if the shape of the magnetis a square and has no skew in relation to the stator slots. With a more complicated magnet shape the calculation has to be done in several sections. It is clear that according to the increasing number of sections also the result will become more accurate. In a radial flux motor all sections of the magnets create force with a same radius. In the case of an axial flux motor, each radial section creates force with a different radius and the torque is the sum of these. The magnetic circuit of the motor, consisting of the stator iron, rotor iron, air-gap, magnet and the slot, is modelled with a reluctance net, which considers the saturation of the iron. This means, that several iterations, in which the permeability is updated, has to be done in order to get final results. The motor torque is calculated using the instantaneous linkage flux and stator currents. Flux linkage is called the part of the flux that is created by the permanent magnets and the stator currents passing through the coils in stator teeth. The angle between this flux and the phase currents define the torque created by the magnetic circuit. Due to the winding structure of the stator and in order to limit the leakage flux the slot openings of the stator are normally not made of ferromagnetic material even though, in some cases, semimagnetic slot wedges are used. In the slot opening faces the flux enters the iron almost normally (tangentially with respect to the rotor flux) creating tangential forces in the rotor. This phenomenon iscalled cogging. The flux in the slot opening area on the different sides of theopening and in the different slot openings is not equal and so these forces do not compensate each other. In the calculation it is assumed that the flux entering the left side of the opening is the component left from the geometrical centre of the slot. This torque component together with the torque component calculated using the Lorenz force make the total torque of the motor. It is easy to assume that when all the magnet edges, where the derivative component of the magnet flux density is at its highest, enter the slot openings at the same time, this will have as a result a considerable cogging torque. To reduce the cogging torquethe magnet edges can be shaped so that they are not parallel to the stator slots, which is the common way to solve the problem. In doing so, the edge may be spread along the whole slot pitch and thus also the high derivative component willbe spread to occur equally along the rotation. Besides forming the magnets theymay also be placed somewhat asymmetric on the rotor surface. The asymmetric distribution can be made in many different ways. All the magnets may have a different deflection of the symmetrical centre point or they can be for example shiftedin pairs. There are some factors that limit the deflection. The first is that the magnets cannot overlap. The magnet shape and the relative width compared to the pole define the deflection in this case. The other factor is that a shifting of the poles limits the maximum torque of the motor. If the edges of adjacent magnets are very close to each other the leakage flux from one pole to the other increases reducing thus the air-gap magnetization. The asymmetric model needs some assumptions and simplifications in order to limit the size of the model and calculation time. The reluctance net is made for symmetric distribution. If the magnets are distributed asymmetrically the flux in the different pole pairs will not be exactly the same. Therefore, the assumption that the flux flows from the edges of the model to the next pole pairs, in the calculation model from one edgeto the other, is not correct. If it were wished for that this fact should be considered in multi-pole pair machines, this would mean that all the poles, in other words the whole machine, should be modelled in reluctance net. The error resulting from this wrong assumption is, nevertheless, irrelevant.

We use the analogy between scattering of a wave from a potential, and the precession of a spin-half particle in a magnetic field, to gain insight into the design of an antireflection coating for electrons in a semiconductor superlattice. It is shown that the classic recipes derived for optics are generally not applicable due to the different dispersion law for electrons. Using the stability conditions we show that a Poisson distribution of impedance steps is a better approximation than is a Gaussian distribution. Examples are given of filters with average transmissivity exceeding 95% over an allowed band.

Partial-thickness tears of the supraspinatus tendon frequently occur at its insertion on the greater tubercule of the humerus, causing pain and reduced strength and range of motion. The goal of this work was to quantify the loss of loading capacity due to tendon tears at the insertion area. A finite element model of the supraspinatus tendon was developed using in vivo magnetic resonance images data. The tendon was represented by an anisotropic hyperelastic constitutive law identified with experimental measurements. A failure criterion was proposed and calibrated with experimental data. A partial-thickness tear was gradually increased, starting from the deep articular-sided fibres. For different values of tendon tear thickness, the tendon was mechanically loaded up to failure. The numerical model predicted a loss in loading capacity of the tendon as the tear thickness progressed. Tendon failure was more likely when the tendon tear exceeded 20%. The predictions of the model were consistent with experimental studies. Partial-thickness tears below 40% tear are sufficiently stable to persist physiotherapeutic exercises. Above 60% tear surgery should be considered to restore shoulder strength.

The strength properties of paper coating layer are very important in converting and printing operations. Too great or low strength of the coating can affect several problems in printing. One of the problems caused by the strength of coating is the cracking at the fold. After printing the paper is folded to final form and the pages are stapled together. In folding the paper coating can crack causing aesthetic damage over printed image or in the worst case the centre sheet can fall off in stapling. When folding the paper other side undergoes tensile stresses and the other side compressive stresses. If the difference between these stresses is too high, the coating can crack on the folding. To better predict and prevent cracking at the fold it is good to know the strength properties of coating layer. It has measured earlier the tensile strength of coating layer but not the compressive strength. In this study it was tried to find some way to measure the compressive strength of the coating layer and investigate how different coatings behave in compression. It was used the short span crush test, which is used to measure the in-plane compressive strength of paperboards, to measure the compressive strength of the coating layer. In this method the free span of the specimen is very small which prevent buckling. It was measured the compressive strength of free coating films as well as coated paper. It was also measured the tensile strength and the Bendtsen air permeance of the coating film. The results showed that the shape of pigment has a great effect to the strength of coating. Platy pigment gave much better strength than round or needle-like pigment. On the other hand calcined kaolin, which is also platy but the particles are aggregated, decreased the strength substantially. The difference in the strength can be explained with packing of the particles which is affecting to the porosity and thus to the strength. The platy kaolin packs up much better than others and creates less porous structure. The results also showed that the binder properties have a great effect to the compressive strength of coating layer. The amount of latex and the glass transition temperature, Tg, affect to the strength. As the amount of latex is increasing, the strength of coating is increasing also. Larger amount of latex is binding the pigment particles better together and decreasing the porosity. Compressive strength was increasing when the Tg was increasing because the hard latex gives a stiffer and less elastic film than soft latex.
