Removal of the spleen presents a lifelong risk of infection, in particular the syndrome of overwhelming postsplenectomy sepsis. Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae and Neisseria meningitides are the most common organisms involved, but malaria, babesiosis and DF-2 also create a problem. Immunisation with pneumococcal vaccine, H. influenzae type b vaccine, influenza vaccine and, if in a high risk area, meningococcal vaccine is recommended. Lifelong phenoxymethylpenicillin 250mg twice daily is also advised, especially in high risk groups such as children and immunocompromised patients. If patients are unwilling to take medicine lifelong, or are unlikely to comply, an antibiotic supply should be made available at all times and administration should commence at the first sign of illness.

Neuropeptides are ubiquitous intercellular signalling molecules in all Metazoa with nervous systems. Research over the past 10 years has confirmed through immunocytochemistry that neuropeptides are widespread and abundant in the nervous systems of helminth parasites. Biochemical isolation and characterisation studies have indentified the primary structures of numerous structurally-related peptides in helminths, the best studied being the FMRFamide-related peptides (FaRPs). While to date only four FaRPs have been identified from platyhelminths, some 60 FaRPs or FaRP-like peptides have been isolated or predicted for nematodes. Preliminary physiological studies have shown that FaRPs are strongly myoactive, but with quire different actions in the two groups of helminth parasite. The absence of FaRPs from vertebrates suggests compounds with a high affinity for FaRP receptors are likely to have selective effects against helminths and, if protected from degradation, could have therapeutic potential.

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is the causative agent of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). The presence of immunostimulating factors or concurrent infections seems to be crucial for PMWS development. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a potent immunological activator and has recently been suggested to enhance PCV2 replication in vitro. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of different LPS products on PCV2 in vitro replication of pulmonary macrophages (PMs), and on the potential ability to trigger PMWS in cesarean-derived, colostrum-deprived (CDCD) PCV2-inoculated piglets.
