The stepped rotating cylinder electrode (SRCE) geometry has been developed as a simple aid to the practical study of the flow-enhanced corrosion and applied electrochemistry problems commonly observed under conditions of disturbed, turbulent flow. The electrodeposition of cupric ions from an acid sulphate plating bath has been used to characterise differential rates of mass transfer to the SRCE. The variation in thickness of electrodeposited copperfilms has allowed the mapping of local rates of mass transfer over the active surface of this geometry. Both optical and scanning electron microscopy were used for the examination of metallographic sections to provide a high resolution evaluation of the distribution of mass transfer coefficient. Results are also discussed using the convective-diffusion model in combination with the existing direct numerical flow simulation (DNS) data for this geometry.

A solution of fac-[PtMe2(OMe)(H2O)(3)](+) (1) in aqueous perchloric acid underwent very slow hydrolysis of the Pt-OMe bond, over many, weeks. When chloride was added to a solution of 1, two interconverting isomers of [PtMe2(OMe)Cl(H2O)(2)] (with chloride trans to methyl) were formed, and with excess chloride, [PtMe2(OMe)Cl-2(H2O)](-) (both chloride ligands trans to methyl). This solution was stable at ambient temperature, but on heating, methanol was formed and [PtMe2Cl2(H2O)(2)] (both chloride ligands cis to methyl) was produced in the solution. It is proposed that this reaction proceeds via an intermediate complex with chloride bound trans to methoxide. Concentration gave solid [{PtMe2Cl2}n], whose identity was confirmed by conversion to [PtMe(2)Cl(2)py(2)] (pyridine, py, trans to methyl). With bromide and iodide, methoxide hydrolysis occurred at ambient temperature, more slowly with bromide than with iodide, to form solid [{PtMe2X2}(n)] without significant concentrations of [PtMe2X2(H2O)(2)] formed as an intermediate. The greater tendency for Pt-OMe bond to hydrolyse trans to halide compared with 1 was ascribed to the higher trans effect of the halide ligand compared with that of water. Wurtzite GaN epilayers bombarded at 300 K with 200 MeV Au-197(16+) ions are studied by a combination of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Rutherford backscattering/channeling spectrometry (RBS/C). Results reveal the formation of near-continuous tracks propagating throughout the entire similar to1.5-mum-thick GaN film. These tracks, similar to100 Angstrom in diameter, exhibit a large degree of structural disordering but do not appear to be amorphous. Throughout the bombarded epilayer, high-resolution TEM reveals planar defects which are parallel to the basal plane of the GaN film. The gross level of lattice disorder, as measured by RBS/C, gradually increases with increasing ion fluence up to similar to10(13) cm(-2). For larger fluences, delamination of the nitride film from the sapphire substrate occurs. Based on these results, physical mechanisms of the formation of lattice disorder in GaN in such a high electronic stopping power regime are discussed. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

In this Comment on Feng's paper [Phys. Rev. A 63, 052308 (2001)], we show that Grover's algorithm may be performed exactly using the gate set given, provided that small changes are made to the gate sequence. An analytic expression for the probability of success of Grover's algorithm for any unitary operator U instead of Hadamard gate is presented.

Following on from previous work [J.-A. Larsson, Phys. Rev. A 67, 022108 (2003)], Bell inequalities based on correlations between binary digits are considered for a particular entangled state involving 2N trapped ions. These inequalities involve applying displacement operations to half of the ions and then measuring correlations between pairs of corresponding bits in the binary representations of the number of center-of-mass phonons of N particular ions. It is shown that the state violates the inequalities and thus displays nonclassical correlations. It is also demonstrated that it violates a Bell inequality when the displacements are replaced by squeezing operations.

A common problem encountered during the development of MS methods for the quantitation of small organic molecules by LGMS is the formation of non-covalently bound species or adducts in the electrospray interface. Often the population of the molecular ion is insignificant compared to those of all other forms of the analyte produced in the electrospray, making it difficult to obtain the sensitivity required for accurate quantitation. We have investigated the effects of the following variables: orifice potential, nebulizer gas flow, temperature, solvent composition and the sample pH on the relative distributions of ions of the types MH+, MNa+, MNH+, and 2MNa(+), where M represents a 4 small organic molecule: BAY 11-7082 ((E)-3-[4-methylphenylsulfonyl]-2-propenenitrile). Orifice potential, solvent composition and the sample pH had the greatest influence on the relative distributions of these ions, making these parameters the most useful for optimizing methods for the quantitation of small molecules.

Anisotropic magnetic susceptibility tensors chi of paramagnetic metal ions are manifested in pseudocontact shifts, residual dipolar couplings, and other paramagnetic observables that present valuable long-range information for structure determinations of protein-ligand complexes. A program was developed for automatic determination of the chi-tensor anisotropy parameters and amide resonance assignments in proteins labeled with paramagnetic metal ions. The program requires knowledge of the three-dimensional structure of the protein, the backbone resonance assignments of the diamagnetic protein, and a pair of 2D N-15-HSQC or 3D HNCO spectra recorded with and without paramagnetic metal ion. It allows the determination of reliable chi-tensor anisotropy parameters from 2D spectra of uniformly N-15-labeled proteins of fairly high molecular weight. Examples are shown for the 185-residue N-terminal domain of the subunit epsilon from E. coli DNA polymerase III in complex with the subunit theta and La3+ in its diamagnetic and Dy3+, Tb3+, and Er3+ in its paramagnetic form.

This paper describes a generic method for the site-specific attachment of lathanide complexes to proteins through a disulfide bond. The method is demonstrated by the attachment of a lanthanide-binding peptide tag to the single cysteine residue present in the N-terminal DNA-binding domain of the Echerichia coli arginine repressor. Complexes with Y3+, Tb3+, Dy3+, Ho3+, Er3+, Tm3+ and Yb3+ ions were formed and analysed by NMR spectroscopy. Large pseudocontact shifts and residual dipolar couplings were induced by the lanthanide-binding tag in the protein NMR spectrum, a result indicating that the tag was rigidly attached to the protein. The axial components of the magnetic susceptibility anisostropy tensors determined for the different lanthanide ions were similarly but not identically oriented. A single tag with a single protein attachment site can provide different pseudocontact shifts from different magnetic susceptibility tensors and thus provide valuable nondegenerate long-range structure information in the determination of 3D protein structures by NMR spectroscopy.
