Ceramic materials alumina basis have been widely used in structural components, mainly because owning properties such as high hardness, chemical inertness and good wear resistance, however, the low toughness is a factor that compromises its use in many other applications, featuring the addition of nickel as a possible solution to this problem, in this context, this work aims to study the addition of nickel alumina using the route of powder metallurgy processing of the material. The percentage of nickel were added 2, 4 and 6 wt%; and each composition to high energy milling in a planetary mill was performed for 2, 4, 9 and 16h. Subsequently, the samples were compacted at 300 MPa and sintered in a vacuum oven at 1400⁰C for 2h. The samples were characterized as the physical and mechanical properties, observing, in general, an improvement in sinterability of the material with increasing grinding time and nickel content, and mixing with a decrease of porosity and increase of hardness, density values above 80% of theoretical were obtained. The milling time of 4 hours and addition of 2% nickel, particularly if achieved higher hardness (HV 1068.7 +/- 32.6) and density of about 99% theoretical density.

Composites based on alumina (Al2O3), tungsten carbide (WC) and cobalt (Co) exhibit specific properties such as low density, high oxidation resistance, high melting point and high chemical inertia. That composite shows to be a promising material for application in various fields of engineering. In this work, the mechanical properties of the composite (Al2O3 – WC – Co), particularly density and hardness, were evaluated according to the effects of the variables of powder processing parameters, green compact and sintered. Powder composites with the composition of 80 wt% Al2O3, 18 wt% WC and 2 wt% Co were processed by high energy ball milling in a planetary mill for 50 hours as well as mixed by manual mixing in a glass vessel with the same proportion. Samples were collected (2, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 hours) during the milling process. Then, the powders were compacted in a cylindrical die with 5 mm in diameter in a uniaxial press with pressures of 200 and 400 MPa. The sintering was in two stages: first, the solid phase sintering was performed at 1126 and 1300 °C for 1 hour with a heating rate of 10 °C/min in a resistive furnace under argon atmosphere for green samples compacted in 200 and 400 MPa; the second sintering was performed on dilatometer in solid phase at 1300 °C for green sample compacted in 200 MPa, another sintering also was performed on dilatometer, this time in liquid phase at 1550 °C for green samples compacted in 200 and 400 MPa, with the same parameters used in resistive furnace. The raw materials were characterized by X – ray diffraction (XRD), X – ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and laser particlemeter. The sintered samples were subjected to microhardness testing. The results showed that high energy milling achieved to the objectives regarding the particle size and the dispersion of composite phases. However, the hardness did not achieve to significant results, this is an indication that the composite has low fracture toughness.

However, after life, not always these products are reused by a suitable waste management process. In ceramist context, advance research aimed at the reuse of waste aimed at obtaining ceramics and composite materials, with marked reduction of conventional raw materials. Aiming to generate scientific, technological and environmental contribution, this work studied to obtain a composite of alumina ceramic (Al2O3) and sodium beta alumina (NaAl11O17 ), and as starting materials the residue of the ceramic insulator of spark plugs, as a source alumina (Al2O3) powder and unusable sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) of fire extinguishers, as a source of sodium oxide (Na2O). The final ceramic product was obtained from a conventional mixture of sodium aluminum oxide in appropriate molar proportions. Sample spark plugs were obtained, discarded by lifetime, specific to a manufacturer, which, after passing through mechanical stress (grinding, magnetic purification, washing, drying and grinding the high energy), which resulted in residue powder with ceramic content of 84.34 % alumina (Al2O3), found by FRX chemical analysis, the phases present and identified by DRX. The dry chemical fire extinguisher, baking soda-based (NaHCO3) with expired, was obtained through direct collection of the waste generated during maintenance. Subjected to heat treatment at 120 °C , the NaHCO3 powder was decomposed in sodium oxide ( Na2O), which, subjected to chemical analysis (FRX) and mineralogical (DRX) revealed a content of 86.62 % sodium oxide (Na2O) . In the following steps the experimental procedure, chemical formulations were made on a molar basis of the starting material (1:9, 1:10 and 1:11 de Na2O/ Al2O3) inclusion of additives, milling parameters, sieve analysis, dilatometry, conformation of specimens, sintering in firing steps at 800 °C , 1000 °C and 1.200 °C with varying stays 30 , 60 and 120 minutes in each of the levels. The characterization of the final product was made by the following physical tests: water absorption, porosity, linear shrinkage, mineralogical analysis by DRX and microstructural analysis by MEV. A higher formation of sodium beta alumina (NaAl11O17), in sintered specimens in levels of 1.200 °C and 120 minutes, despite the prevailing coexistence of alpha phase alumina (Al2O3). From the results obtained opens up prospects for the reuse of waste studied in this work, the potter context and in other technological areas.

It seeks to find an alternative to the current tantalum electrolytic capacitors in the market due to its high cost. Niobium is a potential replacement for be lighter and cheaper than tantalum. They belong to the same table group periodically and thus exhibit several physical and chemical properties similar. Niobium is used in many technologically important applications, and Brazil has the largest reserves, around 96%. These electrolytic capacitors have high specific capacitance, so they can store high energy in small volumes compared to other types of capacitors. This is the main attraction of this type of capacitor because is growing demand in the production of capacitors with capacitance specifies increasingly high, this because of the miniaturization of various devices such as GPS devices, televisions, computers, phones and many others. The production route of the capacitor was made by powder metallurgy. The initial niobium poder was first characterized by XRD, SEM and laser particle size to then be sieved into particle size 400mesh. The powder was then compacted at pressure of 150MPa and sintered at 1400, 1450 and 1500°C using two sintering time 30 and 60min. Sintering is an important part of the process as it affects properties as porosity and surface cleaning of the samples, which greatly affected the quality of the capacitor. After sintering the samples were underwent a process of anodic oxidation (anodizing), which created a thin film of niobium pentoxide over the whole surface of the sample, this film is the dielectric capacitor. The anodizing process variables influenced a lot in film formation and consequently the capacitor. The samples were characterized by electrical measurements of capacitance, loss factor and ESR (equivalent series resistance). The sintering has affected the porosity and in turn the specific area of the samples. The capacitor area is directly related to the capacitance, that is, the higher the specific area is the capacitance. Higher sintering temperatures decrease the surface area but eliminate as many impurities. The best results were obtained at a temperature of 1400°C with 60 minutes. The most interesting results were compared with the specific capacitance and ESR for all samples.

Os sensores lambda resistivos possuem as vantagens de simplicidade e menor custo relativamente à utilização generalizada de sensores potenciométricos de oxigénio. Nesse sentido, os titanatos de estrôncio têm sido alvo de diversos estudos. Para a produção de uma relação inequívoca entre a condutividade destes materiais e a pressão parcial de oxigénio é necessária a adição de um dopante dador que suprime a condução eletrónica do tipo-p na região de pressões parciais de oxigénio próximas de ar. Contudo, a adição de um dopante dador produz respostas lentas destes materiais quando densos a variações da pressão parcial de oxigénio. Além da preparação usual dos pós por reação do estado sólido, foram preparadas diversas composições por mecanossíntese. Tal relaciona-se com o fato exaustivamente reportado de as amostras destes materiais, especialmente quando dopados com dadores, apresentarem comportamentos dependentes das condições de processamento. Teve ainda o intuito de avaliar a viabilidade da sua preparação por este método, e consequentemente verificar se este método de preparação, que presumivelmente produzirá pós com composição mais homogénea e mais reativos, permite alterar/manipular a resposta obtida por amostras com eles produzidas. Foram preparados diversos filmes, tipologia muito usada na produção de sensores resistivos, e amostras porosas com diversas composições à base de titanato de estrôncio produzidos com variadas condições de processamento. Foram realizadas diversas caracterizações sobre estes espécimes numa tentativa de melhor compreender as propriedades destes materiais e a dependência destas com parâmetros microestruturais como o tamanho de grão e a porosidade. Foi verificado que os exemplares de titanato de estrôncio não dopado, quer em filmes quer em amostras porosas, apresentam um comportamento elétrico semelhante ao apresentado por amostras densas deste material. Apurou-se ainda, que as suas características apresentam uma variação ténue com a alteração das condições de processamento. Já espécimes de titanato de estrôncio dopados com dador revelam uma forte dependência das suas propriedades com as condições de processamento utilizadas, nomeadamente, a temperatura de sinterização e o tempo de permanência a essa temperatura. Para o fabrico de sensores resistivos de oxigénio poderá ser preferível o recurso a amostras porosas pelo facto de mais facilmente se manipularem as suas características microestruturais e devido à exclusão dos problemas associados à interação entre o substrato de alumina e o filme. As composições não dopadas são as indicadas para esta função se a gama de pressões de oxigénio a avaliar for relativamente pouco extensa sendo aconselhadas as composições dopadas com dador se for pretendida uma medição da pressão parcial de oxigénio em zonas mais extensas correspondentes à queima com deficiência ou excesso de oxigénio. Mesmo em amostras de elevada porosidade poderá ocorrer resposta transiente do material dopado com dador.

O gradual consumo de energia primária a nível mundial deu origem a uma crise não só ambiental como também económica, proveniente das limitações das reservas energéticas e do fornecimento. Estas inquietações têm levado a um estudo cada vez mais aprofundado no que concerne à eficiência energética de edifícios. É neste contexto que surge o estudo da aplicação dos materiais de mudança de fase (PCM) na térmica dos edifícios. O presente trabalho consiste no estudo da influência da introdução de materiais de mudança de fase no comportamento térmico de um edifício. Foi analisada uma simulação numérica para um sistema solar passivo de ganho direto, por um programa de simulação designado EXTEND™. Efetuou-se, também, o estudo paramétrico de determinadas propriedades associadas aos materiais de mudança de fase. Após a análise, foi testado o impacto, em termos de conforto, da utilização de materiais de mudança de fase em sistemas solares passivos de ganho direto.

O mercado das telecomunicações e das tecnologias da informação é caraterizado por uma elevada instabilidade e competitividade. Deste modo, a aposta na diferenciação, no estabelecimento de vantagens competitivas e na melhoria contínua são pontos fulcrais para o sucesso das empresas tecnológicas. A empresa tecnológica PT Inovação e Sistemas, S.A. apresenta a necessidade de melhorar a gestão económica e física de materiais. Neste sentido, o presente Projeto propõe a introdução de melhorias ao nível da gestão de stocks e do armazém da referida empresa, segundo a realização de análises ABC, da determinação de stocks de segurança adequados e da redefinição do layout atual. Definem-se também critérios de alocação dos materiais no espaço de armazenagem e propõe-se a introdução de um sistema de controlo e rastreabilidade de materiais. Como fruto do presente trabalho, os resultados obtidos tiveram um impacto positivo, possibilitando um aumento da produtividade e da eficiência nos processos associados à gestão de materiais da organização.

Tendo sido interrompido, a partir do ano lectivo de 2015/2016, o 1º Ciclo do Curso de Engenharia Civil, o autor resolveu reunir toda a informação que foi disponibilizada aos alunos da disciplina de Resistência de Materiais, durante os 8 anos em que o curso funcionou na Universidade de Évora. O presente trabalho versa o tema do Momento flector da Resistência de Materiais e é uma edição revista e acrescentada das edições que foram publicadas em 2013; 2010; 2009 e 2008. No curso, a disciplina de Resistência de Materiais tinha a duração de um único semestre (4º semestre), pelo que foi necessário selecionar os temas mais relevantes a ensinar sobre Momento flector. Nos diversos pontos deste trabalho são apresentados os aspectos formais importantes, completados com problemas resolvidos e não resolvidos de aplicação. No último ponto estão incluídos todos os exercícios de aplicação sobre Momento flector abordados nas aulas práticas e os que foram alvo de avaliação nas provas de frequência e de exame.

No último ponto estão incluídos exercícios, abordados nas aulas práticas, sobre diagramas de esforços, tema ministrado na unidade curricular de Mecânica Aplicada que precedia a Resistência de Materiais na Licenciatura em Engenharia Civil.
