Ion-molecule reactions of four isomeric cyclopropane derivatives were investigated under chemical ionization(CI) conditions, using methane, acetone and vinyl acetate as reagent gases, The methane positive-ion CI mass spectra of each of two isomer pairs 1,2 and 3,4 are identical, and so are the collision-induced dissociation (CTD) spectra of the protonated molecules of each of the two isomer pairs, The protonation reactions for the isomer pairs 1,2 and 3,4 occurred on the sites of the carboxyl groups and the R groups, respectively, Differences between isomers 1 and 2 are observed in their acetone (A) positive-ion CI mass spectra and in the CID spectra of their adduct ions ([M+H+A](+)), The adduct ions of compounds 2, 3 and 4 with protonated acetone and with protonated acetone dimer are observed in their CI mass spectra, However, only the adduct ions of compound 1 with protonated acetone appear in its CI mass spectrum, The protonated dimers of each of the four compounds are found in their vinyl acetate positive-ion CI mass spectra, and the CID spectra of these dimers for isomers 1 and 2 can also reflect their stereostructural difference. Thirteen extracting solutions of rare-earth metallofullerenes containing La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm and Yb respectively have been investigated by means of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-night, mass spectrometry. The influences of the positive-ion/negative-ion mode, laser intensity, matrix and mass discrimination to the analytical results are studied, based on which the optimal analytical conditions have been determined. The results show that the extracting solutions contain large quantities of rare-earth metallofullerenes brs;des empty fullerenes, On the basis of comparing their relative intensities, the different structure stabilities and solubilities of metallofullerenes with different rare-earth metals encapsulated into the fullerene cages, as well as some possible reasons to those differences, are discussed.

It is found that the nitro substituent of some aromatic bifunctional compounds shows unusual reactivity towards protonation. In the chemical ionization mass spectra of nitrobenzoic acids and their esters and amides, and of nitrophenols and their ethers, protonations on the carboxyl, ester, amide, hydroxyl or alkoxyl groups are highly suppressed by that on the nitro group. As a result, fragmentations based on protonation on these groups unexpectedly become negligible. Ortho effects were observed for all the ortho isomers where the initial protonation on the nitro group is followed by an intramolecular proton transfer reaction, which leads to the expected 'normal' fragmentations. Protonation on the nitro substituent is much more favourable in energy than on any of the other substituents. The interaction of the two substituents through the conjugating benzene ring is found to be responsible for this 'unfair' competitive protonation. The electron-attracting nitro group strongly destabilizes the MH+ ions formed through protonation on the other substituent; although the COR (R = OH, OMe, OEt, NH2) groups are also electron-withdrawing, their effects are weaker than that of NO2; thus protonation on the latter group produces more-stable MH+ ions. On the other hand, an electron-releasing group OR (R = H, Me, Et) stabilizes the nitro-protonated species; the stronger the electron-donating effect of this group the more stable the nitro-protonated ions.

A radical aromatic substitution resulting in biphenylcarboxylic acid is inferred for the decomposition of benzoyl peroxide from the chemical ionization and collision-induced dissociation mass spectra. The thermolysis of benzoyl peroxide gives rise to a benzoyloxy radical, which undergoes rapid decarboxylation and hydrogen abstraction leading to phenyl radical and benzoic acid, respectively. Attack of the resulting phenyl radical on the benzoic acid results in bipbenylcarboxylic acid. On the other hand, the phenyl radical abstracts a hydrogen atom to yield benzene, which is then subjected to the attack of a benzoyloxy radical, affording phenyl benzoate. This substitution reaction rather than the recombination of benzoyloxy and phenyl radicals is found to be responsible for the formation of phenyl benzoate under the present conditions.

Two methods for tetrodotoxin analysis using liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray iontrap mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS) have been established with C,, reversed phase column and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) column, respectively. Sensitivity and reproducibility of the methods were compared. The method using C-18 column in selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode had a detection limit (S/N = 3) of 120 pg, and a good linearity of the calibration curve was obtained for tetrodotoxin (r = 0. 9992). High reproducibility of the method was observed, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) below 10%. The method using HILIC column in SIM mode and selected reaction monitoring (SRM) mode had detection limits (S/N = 3) of 15 and 3.75 pg, respectively. Good linearity of the calibration curves was obtained for tetrodotoxin (r = 0. 9996 and 0. 9998 in SIM and SRM mode, respectively). T he reproducibility was high in SIM mode but relatively poor in SRM mode. Based on the results, the method using HILIC column in SIM mode was suggested for the analysis of tetrodotoxin with LC-MS system.

A highly sensitive and accurate method based on the precolumn derivatization of bile acids (BA) with a high ionization efficiency labeling reagent 1,2-benzo-3,4-dihydrocarbazole-9-ethyl-benzenesulfonate (BDEBS) coupled with LC/MS has been developed. After derivatization, BA molecules introduced a weak basic nitrogen atom into the molecular core structure that was readily ionized in commonly used acidic HPLC mobile phases. Derivatives were sufficiently stable to be efficiently analyzed by atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI)-MS/MS in positive-ion mode. The MS/MS spectra of BA derivatives showed an intense protonated molecular ion at m/z [M + H](+). The collision-induced dissociation of the molecular ion produced fragment ions at [MH - H2O](+), [MH - 2H(2)O](+), [MH - 3H(2)O](+). The characteristic fragment ions were at m/z 320.8, 262.8, and 243.7 corresponding to a cleavage of N - CO, O - CO, and C - OCC, respectively, and bonds of derivatized molecules. The selected reaction monitoring, based on the m/z [M + H]+ -> [MH - H2O](+), [MH - H2O](+), [MH - 2H(2)O](+), [MH-3H(2)O](+), 320.8, 262.8, and 243.7 transitions, was highly specific for the BA derivatives. The LODs for APCI in a positive-ion mode, at an S/N of 5, were 44.36-153.6 fmol. The validation results showed high accuracy in the range of 93-107% and the mean interday precision for all standards was < 15% at broad linear dynamic ranges (0.0244-25nmol/mL). Good linear responses were observed with coefficients of > 0.9935 in APCI/MS detection. Therefore, the facile BDEBS derivatization coupled with mass spectrometric analysis allowed the development of a highly sensitive and specific method for the quantitation of trace levels of the free and glycine-conjugated BA from human serum samples.

A simple, sensitive, and mild method for the determination of amino compounds based on a condensation reaction with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC-HCI) as the dehydrant with fluorescence detection has been developed. Amines were derivatized to their acidamides with labeling reagent 2-(2-phenyl-1H-phenanthro-[9,10-d]imidazole-1-yl)-acetic acid (PPIA). Studies on derivatization conditions indicated that the coupling reaction proceeded rapidly and smoothly in the presence of a base catalyst in acetonitrile to give the corresponding sensitively fluorescent derivatives with an excitation maximum at lambda(ex) 260nm and an emission maximum at lambda(em) 380nm. The labeled derivatives exhibited high stability and were enough to be efficiently analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. Identification of derivatives was carried out by online post-column mass spectrometry (LC/APCI-MS/MS) and showed an intense protonated molecular ion corresponding m/z [MH](+) under APCI in positive-ion mode. At the same time, the fluorescence properties of derivatives in various solvents or at different temperature were investigated. The method, in conjunction with a gradient elution, offered a baseline resolution of the common amine derivatives on a reversed-phase Eclipse XDB-C-8 column. LC separation for the derivatized amines showed good reproducibility with acetonitrile-water as mobile phase. Detection limits calculated from 0.78 pmol injection, at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3, were 3.1-18.2 fmol. The mean intra- and inter-assay precision for all amine levels were < 3.85% and 2.11%, respectively. Excellent linear responses were observed with coefficients of > 0.9996. The established method for the determination of aliphatic amines from real wastewater and biological samples was satisfactory. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
The ion-molecule reaction after multiphoton ionization in the binary cluster of ammonia and methanol
Resumo:
The binary cluster (CH3OH)(n)(NH3)(m) was studied by using a multiphoton ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MPI-TOFMS). The measured two series of protonated cluster ions: (CH3OH)(n)H+ and (CH3OH)(n)NH4+ (1 less than or equal to n less than or equal to 14) were attributed to the ion-molecule reaction in the binary cluster ions. The mixed cluster of CH3OD with ammonia was also studied. The results implied that the proton transfer probability from the OD group was larger than that from CH3 group. The ab initio calculation of the binary cluster was carried out at the HF/STO-3G and MP2/6-31G** levels of theory, and indicated that the latter process of the proton transfer must overcome a barrier of similar to 29 kcal/mol.
