In a large number of problems the high dimensionality of the search space, the vast number of variables and the economical constrains limit the ability of classical techniques to reach the optimum of a function, known or unknown. In this thesis we investigate the possibility to combine approaches from advanced statistics and optimization algorithms in such a way to better explore the combinatorial search space and to increase the performance of the approaches. To this purpose we propose two methods: (i) Model Based Ant Colony Design and (ii) Nave Bayes Ant Colony Optimization. We test the performance of the two proposed solutions on a simulation study and we apply the novel techniques on an appplication in the field of Enzyme Engineering and Design.

The objective of the Ph.D. thesis is to put the basis of an all-embracing link analysis procedure that may form a general reference scheme for the future state-of-the-art of RF/microwave link design: it is basically meant as a circuit-level simulation of an entire radio link, with generally multiple transmitting and receiving antennas examined by EM analysis. In this way the influence of mutual couplings on the frequency-dependent near-field and far-field performance of each element is fully accounted for. The set of transmitters is treated as a unique nonlinear system loaded by the multiport antenna, and is analyzed by nonlinear circuit techniques. In order to establish the connection between transmitters and receivers, the far-fields incident onto the receivers are evaluated by EM analysis and are combined by extending an available Ray Tracing technique to the link study. EM theory is used to describe the receiving array as a linear active multiport network. Link performances in terms of bit error rate (BER) are eventually verified a posteriori by a fast system-level algorithm. In order to validate the proposed approach, four heterogeneous application contexts are provided. A complete MIMO link design in a realistic propagation scenario is meant to constitute the reference case study. The second one regards the design, optimization and testing of various typologies of rectennas for power generation by common RF sources. Finally, the project and implementation of two typologies of radio identification tags, at X-band and V-band respectively. In all the cases the importance of an exhaustive nonlinear/electromagnetic co-simulation and co-design is demonstrated to be essential for any accurate system performance prediction.

Uno dei principali ambiti di ricerca dellintelligenza artificiale concerne la realizzazione di agenti (in particolare, robot) in grado di aiutare o sostituire luomo nellesecuzione di determinate attivit. A tal fine, possibile procedere seguendo due diversi metodi di progettazione: la progettazione manuale e la progettazione automatica. Questultima pu essere preferita alla prima nei contesti in cui occorra tenere in considerazione requisiti quali flessibilit e adattamento, spesso essenziali per lo svolgimento di compiti non banali in contesti reali. La progettazione automatica prende in considerazione un modello col quale rappresentare il comportamento dellagente e una tecnica di ricerca (oppure di apprendimento) che iterativamente modifica il modello al fine di renderlo il pi adatto possibile al compito in esame. In questo lavoro, il modello utilizzato per la rappresentazione del comportamento del robot una rete booleana (Boolean network o Kauffman network). La scelta di tale modello deriva dal fatto che possiede una semplice struttura che rende agevolmente studiabili le dinamiche tuttavia complesse che si manifestano al suo interno. Inoltre, la letteratura recente mostra che i modelli a rete, quali ad esempio le reti neuronali artificiali, si sono dimostrati efficaci nella programmazione di robot. La metodologia per levoluzione di tale modello riguarda luso di tecniche di ricerca meta-euristiche in grado di trovare buone soluzioni in tempi contenuti, nonostante i grandi spazi di ricerca. Lavori precedenti hanno gia dimostrato lapplicabilit e investigato la metodologia su un singolo robot. Lo scopo di questo lavoro quello di fornire prova di principio relativa a un insieme di robot, aprendo nuove strade per la progettazione in swarm robotics. In questo scenario, semplici agenti autonomi, interagendo fra loro, portano allemergere di un comportamento coordinato adempiendo a task impossibili per la singola unit. Questo lavoro fornisce utili ed interessanti opportunit anche per lo studio delle interazioni fra reti booleane. Infatti, ogni robot controllato da una rete booleana che determina loutput in funzione della propria configurazione interna ma anche dagli input ricevuti dai robot vicini. In questo lavoro definiamo un task in cui lo swarm deve discriminare due diversi pattern sul pavimento dellarena utilizzando solo informazioni scambiate localmente. Dopo una prima serie di esperimenti preliminari che hanno permesso di identificare i parametri e il migliore algoritmo di ricerca, abbiamo semplificato listanza del problema per meglio investigare i criteri che possono influire sulle prestazioni. E stata cos identificata una particolare combinazione di informazione che, scambiata localmente fra robot, porta al miglioramento delle prestazioni. Lipotesi stata confermata applicando successivamente questo risultato ad unistanza pi difficile del problema. Il lavoro si conclude suggerendo nuovi strumenti per lo studio dei fenomeni emergenti in contesti in cui le reti booleane interagiscono fra loro.

The new family of the anion receptors based on oligoureas with varied flexibility was developed and studied. The preparation of the urea chains containing two different units in various sequences was elaborated. The complete sets of four cyclic trimers and six tetramers based on the two units were prepared. Their conformational and complexation properties were studied with NMR spectroscopy and X-ray structure determinations, their behaviour towards various anions was evaluated and compared. The synthesis and the same studies were performed also with four different cyclic hexamers. During these studies the remarkable templation by two halide anions was observed.

This report elaborates on the master degree thesis developed by the candidate within the company Superjet International. The performed activity focuses on the study and design of VAMP (Virtual Aircraft Multipurpose Platform). VAMP is a new interactive platform, not necessarily limited to the Aeronautical sector, aimed to analyse technical failures, identify risk and recommend the most appropriate corrective actions for maintenance cost reduction, taking into account reliability, availability, maintainability and safety.

This thesis deals with the synthesis and the conformation analysis of hybrid foldamers containing the 4-carboxyoxazolidin-2-one unit or related molecules, in which an imido-type function is obtained by coupling the nitrogen of the heterocycle with the carboxylic acid moiety of the next unit. The imide group is characterized by a nitrogen atom connected to an endocyclic and an exocyclic carbonyl, which tend always to adopt the trans conformation. As a consequence of this locally constrained disposition effect, these imide-type oligomers are forced to fold in ordered conformations. The synthetic approach is highly tuneable with endless variations, so, simply by changing the design and the synthesis, a wide variety of foldamers with the required properties may be prepared on demand. Thus a wide variety of unusual secondary structures and interesting supramolecular materials may be obtained with hybrid foldamers. The behaviour in the solid state of some of these compounds has been analyzed in detail, thus showing the formation of different kinds of supramolecular materials that may be used for several applications. A winning example is the production of a bolaamphiphilic gelators that may also be doped with small amounts of dansyl containing compounds, needed to show the cellular uptake into IGROV-1 cells, by confocal laser scanning microscopy. These gels are readily internalized by cells and are biologically inactive, making them very good candidates in the promising field of drug delivery. In the last part of the thesis, a particular attention was directed to the search of new scaffolds that behave as constrained amino acid mimetics, showing that tetramic acids derivatives could be good candidates for the synthesis and applications of molecules having an ordered secondary structure.

The new generation of multicore processors opens new perspectives for the design of embedded systems. Multiprocessing, however, poses new challenges to the scheduling of real-time applications, in which the ever-increasing computational demands are constantly flanked by the need of meeting critical time constraints. Many research works have contributed to this field introducing new advanced scheduling algorithms. However, despite many of these works have solidly demonstrated their effectiveness, the actual support for multiprocessor real-time scheduling offered by current operating systems is still very limited. This dissertation deals with implementative aspects of real-time schedulers in modern embedded multiprocessor systems. The first contribution is represented by an open-source scheduling framework, which is capable of realizing complex multiprocessor scheduling policies, such as G-EDF, on conventional operating systems exploiting only their native scheduler from user-space. A set of experimental evaluations compare the proposed solution to other research projects that pursue the same goals by means of kernel modifications, highlighting comparable scheduling performances. The principles that underpin the operation of the framework, originally designed for symmetric multiprocessors, have been further extended first to asymmetric ones, which are subjected to major restrictions such as the lack of support for task migrations, and later to re-programmable hardware architectures (FPGAs). In the latter case, this work introduces a scheduling accelerator, which offloads most of the scheduling operations to the hardware and exhibits extremely low scheduling jitter. The realization of a portable scheduling framework presented many interesting software challenges. One of these has been represented by timekeeping. In this regard, a further contribution is represented by a novel data structure, called addressable binary heap (ABH). Such ABH, which is conceptually a pointer-based implementation of a binary heap, shows very interesting average and worst-case performances when addressing the problem of tick-less timekeeping of high-resolution timers.

This study is focused on radio-frequency inductively coupled thermal plasma (ICP) synthesis of nanoparticles, combining experimental and modelling approaches towards process optimization and industrial scale-up, in the framework of the FP7-NMP SIMBA European project (Scaling-up of ICP technology for continuous production of Metallic nanopowders for Battery Applications). First the state of the art of nanoparticle production through conventional and plasma routes is summarized, then results for the characterization of the plasma source and on the investigation of the nanoparticle synthesis phenomenon, aiming at highlighting fundamental process parameters while adopting a design oriented modelling approach, are presented. In particular, an energy balance of the torch and of the reaction chamber, employing a calorimetric method, is presented, while results for three- and two-dimensional modelling of an ICP system are compared with calorimetric and enthalpy probe measurements to validate the temperature eld predicted by the model and used to characterize the ICP system under powder-free conditions. Moreover, results from the modeling of critical phases of ICP synthesis process, such as precursor evaporation, vapour conversion in nanoparticles and nanoparticle growth, are presented, with the aim of providing useful insights both for the design and optimization of the process and on the underlying physical phenomena. Indeed, precursor evaporation, one of the phases holding the highest impact on industrial feasibility of the process, is discussed; by employing models to describe particle trajectories and thermal histories, adapted from the ones originally developed for other plasma technologies or applications, such as DC non-transferred arc torches and powder spherodization, the evaporation of micro-sized Si solid precursor in a laboratory scale ICP system is investigated. Finally, a discussion on the role of thermo-fluid dynamic fields on nano-particle formation is presented, as well as a study on the effect of the reaction chamber geometry on produced nanoparticle characteristics and process yield.

Dendritic systems, and in particular polyphenylene dendrimers, have recently attracted considerable attention from the synthetic organic chemistry community, as well as from photophysicists, particularly in view of the search for synthetic model analogies to photoelectric materials to fabricate organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), and even more advanced areas of research such as light-harvesting system, energy transfer and non-host device. Geometrically, dendrimers are unique systems that consist of a core, one or more dendrons, and surface groups. The different parts of the macromolecule can be selected to give the desired optoelectronic and processing properties. Compared to small molecular or polymeric light-emitting materials, these dendritic materials can combine the benefits of both previous classes. The high molecular weights of these dendritic macromolecules, as well as the surface groups often attached to the distal ends of the dendrons, can improve the solution processability, and thus can be deposited from solution by simple processes such as spin-coating and ink-jet printing. Moreover, even better than the traditional polymeric light-emitting materials, the well-defined monodisperse distributed dendrimers possess a high purity comparable to that of small molecules, and as such can be fabricated into high performance OLEDs. Most importantly, the emissive chromophores can be located at the core of the dendrimer, within the dendrons, and/or at the surface of the dendrimers because of their unique dendritic architectures. The different parts of the macromolecule can be selected to give the desired optoelectronic and processing properties. Therefore, the main goals of this thesis are the design and synthesis, characterization of novel functional dendrimers, e.g. polytriphenylene dendrimers for blue fluorescent, as well as iridium(III) complex cored polyphenylene dendrimers for green and red phosphorescent light emitting diodes. In additional to the above mentioned advantages of dendrimer based OLEDs, the modular molecular architecture and various functionalized units at different locations in polyphenylene dendrimers open up a tremendous scope for tuning a wide range of properties in addition to color, such as intermolecular interactions, charge mobility, quantum yield, and exciton diffusion. In conclusion, research into dendrimer containing OLEDs combines fundamental aspects of organic semiconductor physics, novel and highly sophisticated organic synthetic chemistry and elaborate device technology.rn

A two-dimensional model to analyze the distribution of magnetic fields in the airgap of a PM electrical machines is studied. A numerical algorithm for non-linear magnetic analysis of multiphase surface-mounted PM machines with semi-closed slots is developed, based on the equivalent magnetic circuit method. By using a modular structure geometry, whose the basic element can be duplicated, it allows to design whatever typology of windings distribution. In comparison to a FEA, permits a reduction in computing time and to directly changing the values of the parameters in a user interface, without re-designing the model. Output torque and radial forces acting on the moving part of the machine can be calculated. In addition, an analytical model for radial forces calculation in multiphase bearingless Surface-Mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (SPMSM) is presented. It allows to predict amplitude and direction of the force, depending on the values of torque current, of levitation current and of rotor position. It is based on the space vectors method, letting the analysis of the machine also during transients. The calculations are conducted by developing the analytical functions in Fourier series, taking all the possible interactions between stator and rotor mmf harmonic components into account and allowing to analyze the effects of electrical and geometrical quantities of the machine, being parametrized. The model is implemented in the design of a control system for bearingless machines, as an accurate electromagnetic model integrated in a three-dimensional mechanical model, where one end of the motor shaft is constrained to simulate the presence of a mechanical bearing, while the other is free, only supported by the radial forces developed in the interactions between magnetic fields, to realize a bearingless system with three degrees of freedom. The complete model represents the design of the experimental system to be realized in the laboratory.

Constant developments in the field of offshore wind energy have increased the range of water depths at which wind farms are planned to be installed. Therefore, in addition to monopile support structures suitable in shallow waters (up to 30 m), different types of support structures, able to withstand severe sea conditions at the greater water depths, have been developed. For water depths above 30 m, the jacket is one of the preferred support types. Jacket represents a lightweight support structure, which, in combination with complex nature of environmental loads, is prone to highly dynamic behavior. As a consequence, high stresses with great variability in time can be observed in all structural members. The highest concentration of stresses occurs in joints due to their nature (structural discontinuities) and due to the existence of notches along the welds present in the joints. This makes them the weakest elements of the jacket in terms of fatigue. In the numerical modeling of jackets for offshore wind turbines, a reduction of local stresses at the chord-brace joints, and consequently an optimization of the model, can be achieved by implementing joint flexibility in the chord-brace joints. Therefore, in this work, the influence of joint flexibility on the fatigue damage in chord-brace joints of a numerical jacket model, subjected to advanced load simulations, is studied.

Die Kernmagnetresonanz (NMR) ist eine vielseitige Technik, die auf spin-tragende Kerne angewiesen ist. Seit ihrer Entdeckung ist die Kernmagnetresonanz zu einem unverzichtbaren Werkzeug in unzhligen Anwendungen der Physik, Chemie, Biologie und Medizin geworden. Das grte Problem der NMR ist ihre geringe Sensitivtt auf Grund der sehr kleinen Energieaufspaltung bei Raumtemperatur. Fr Protonenspins, die das grte magnetogyrische Verhltnis besitzen, ist der Polarisationsgrad selbst in den grten verfgbaren Magnetfeldern (24 T) nur ~7*10^(-5).rnDurch die geringe inhrente Polarisation ist folglich eine theoretische Sensitivittssteigerung von mehr als 10^4 mglich. rnIn dieser Arbeit wurden verschiedene technische Aspekte und unterschiedliche Polarisationsagenzien fr Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) untersucht.rnDie technische Entwicklung des mobilen Aufbaus umfasst die Verwendung eines neuen Halbach Magneten, die Konstruktion neuer Probenkpfe und den automatisierten Ablauf der Experimente mittels eines LabVIEW basierten Programms. Desweiteren wurden zwei neue Polarisationsagenzien mit besonderen Merkmalen fr den Overhauser und den Tieftemperatur DNP getestet. Zustzlich konnte die Durchfhrbarkeit von NMR Experimenten an Heterokernen (19F und 13C) im mobilen Aufbau bei 0,35 T gezeigt werden. Diese Ergebnisse zeigen die Mglichkeiten der Polarisationstechnik DNP auf, wenn Heterokerne mit einem kleinen magnetogyrischen Verhltnis polarisiert werden mssen.rnDie Sensitivittssteigerung sollte viele neue Anwendungen, speziell in der Medizin, ermglichen.

This thesis aims to give a general view of pavement types all over the world, by showing the different characteristics of each one and its different life steps starting from construction, passing by maintenance and arriving until recycling phase. The flexible pavement took the main part of this work because it has been used in the last part of this thesis to design a project of a rural road. This project is located in the province of Bologna-Italy (Comune di Argelato, 26 km in the north of Bologna), and has 5677, 81 m of length. A pavement design was made using the program BISAR 3.0 and a fatigue life study was made, also, in order to estimate the number of loads (in terms of heavy vehicles axle) to cause roads failure . An alignment design was made for this project and a safety study was established in order to check if the available sight distance at curves respects the safety norms or not, by comparing it to the stopping sight distance. Different technical sheets are demonstrated and several cases are discussed in order to clarify the main design principles and underline the main hazardous cases to be avoided especially at intersection. This latter, its types choice depends on several factors in order to make the suitable design according to the environmental data. At this part of the road, the safety is a primordial point due to the high accident rate in this zone. For this reason, different safety aspects are discussed especially at roundabouts, signalized intersections, and also some other common intersection types. The design and the safety norms are taken with reference to AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials), ACT (Transportation Association of Canada), and also according to Italian norms (Decreto Ministeriale delle Starde).
