In this paper, an exact series solution for the vibration analysis of circular cylindrical shells with arbitrary boundary conditions is obtained, using the elastic equations based on Flügge's theory. Each of the three displacements is represented by a Fourier series and auxiliary functions and sought in a strong form by letting the solution exactly satisfy both the governing differential equations and the boundary conditions on a point-wise basis. Since the series solution has to be truncated for numerical implementation, the term exactly satisfying should be understood as a satisfaction with arbitrary precision. One of the important advantages of this approach is that it can be universally applied to shells with a variety of different boundary conditions, without the need of making any corresponding modifications to the solution algorithms and implementation procedures as typically required in other techniques. Furthermore, the current method can be easily used to deal with more complicated boundary conditions such as point supports, partial supports, and non-uniform elastic restraints. Numerical examples are presented regarding the modal parameters of shells with various boundary conditions. The capacity and reliability of this solution method are demonstrated through these examples. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The pathological evaluation of rectal biopsies for the diagnosis of Hirschsprung disease has been a challenging issue. We analyzed prospectively the usefulness of calretinin immunostaining and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) histochesmistry in rectal biopsies for the diagnosis of Hirschsprung disease. Frozen tissue samples from 43 patients were used for AChE histochemistry and paraffin-embedded sections for calretinin immunohistochemistry and conventional histology (hematoxylin and eosin [H&E]). Activity for AChE, was demonstrated in 13 of 43 cases, and the absence of immunoreactivity for calretinin was observed in 14 of 43 cases. Conventional histology (H&E) did not reveal ganglion cells in 24 of 43 cases. The results on calretinin were in good agreement with AChE according to the κ index (0.946; P < .001) and presented significantly higher specificity (96.7 × 63.3; P < .002) and accuracy (97.6 × 74.4; P < .003) when compared with conventional histology (H&E). The final diagnosis of Hirschsprung disease was confirmed in 13 of 43 patients who were submitted to surgical treatment. The results of the present study indicate that calretinin can be a good tool in ruling out the diagnosis of Hirschsprung disease, by showing positive staining in ganglion cells and intrinsic nerve fibers, whereas AChE is useful in confirming the diagnosis of Hirschsprung disease, by revealing activity of this enzyme in hypertrophied nerve fibers. The association between calretinin and AChE can be a useful panel for the histopathologic evaluation of rectal biopsies for the diagnosis of Hirschsprung disease. © 2013 Elsevier Inc. In this work we investigate the adsorption of polyelectrolyte chains onto uniformly charged cylindrical macroions by means of the Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations and weighted histogram analysis method. Adopting a simplified model for macromolecules and treating the electrolytic solution in the Debye-Hückel level, conformational properties of the adsorbed chain, such as the radius of gyration and the thickness of the adsorbed layer, are provided as a function of ionic strength and macroion charge density. By analysis of the free energy profile as a function of the radius of gyration it was possible to identify first-order-like transitions between adsorbed and desorbed states and obtain a macroion charge density dependence of the critical ionic strength in good agreement with experiments. © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.
