We have synthesized four different types of dimesogenic compounds involving the cholesteryl moiety as one of the mesogenic constituents, and have investigated their liquid crystalline properties. The molecular structures of these dimesogens have been confirmed by spectral analyses; they exhibit a rich polymorphism, as revealed by optical microscopic and differential scanning calorimetric observations. The studies show that the mesomorphic behaviour is sensitive to the nature of the terminal alkyl chains, and to the structure of the 'second mesogen' that is attached to the cholesteryl unit through a polymethylene spacer.

Copper(I)-dppm complexes encapsulating the oxyanions ClO4-, NO3-, CH3C6H4CO2-, SO42-, and WO42- have been synthesized either by reduction of the corresponding Cu(II) salts and treatment with dppm, or by treating the complex [Cu-2(dppm)(2)(dmcn)(3)](BF4)(2) (1) (dmcn = dimethyl cyanamide) with the respective anion. The isolated complexes [Cu-2(dppm)(2)(dmcn)(2)(ClO4)] (ClO4) (2), [Cu-2(dppm)(2)(dmcn)(2)(NO3)] (NO3) (3), Cu-2(dppm)(2)(NO3)(2) (4), [Cu-2(dppm)(2)(CH3C6H4CO2)(2)]dmcn.2THF (5), Cu-2(dppm)(2)(SO4) (6), and [Cu-3(dppm)(3)(Cl)(WO4)] 0.5H(2)O (7) have been characterized by IR, H-1 and P-31{H-1} NMR, UV-vis, and emission spectroscopy. The solid-state molecular structure of complexes 1, 2, 4, and 7 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Pertinent crystal data are as follows: for 1, monoclinic P2(1)/c, a = 11.376(10) Angstrom, b = 42.503(7) Angstrom, c = 13.530(6) Angstrom, beta = 108.08(2)degrees, V = 6219(3) Angstrom(3), Z = 4; for 2, monoclinic P2(1)/c, a = 21.600(3) Angstrom, b = 12.968(3) Angstrom, c = 23.050(3) Angstrom, beta = 115.97(2)degrees, V = 5804(17) Angstrom(3), Z = 4; for 4, triclinic
, a = 10.560(4) Angstrom, b = 10.553(3) Angstrom, c = 22.698(3) Angstrom, alpha = 96.08(2)degrees, beta = 96.03(2)degrees, gamma = 108.31(2)degrees, V = 2362(12) Angstrom(3), Z = 2; and for 7, orthorhombic P2(1)2(1)2(1), a = 14.407(4) Angstrom, b = 20.573(7) Angstrom, c = 24.176(6) Angstrom, V = 7166(4) Angstrom(3), Z = 4. Analyses of the crystallographic and spectroscopic data of these complexes reveal the nature of interactions between the Cu-I-dppm core and oxyanion. The anchoring of the oxyanion to the Cu-n(dppm)(n) unit is primarily through coordination to the metal, but the noncovalent C-H ... O interactions between the methylene and phenyl protons of the dppm and oxygen atoms of the oxyanion play a significant role. The solid-state emission spectra for complexes 1-6 are very similar but different from 7. In CDCl3 solution, addition of ClO4- or NO3- (as their tetrabutylammonium salts) to 1 establishes a rapid equilibrium between the anion-complexed and uncomplexed forms. The association constant values for ClO4- and NO3- have been estimated from the P-31{H-1} NMR spectra.

The polynuclear copper(II) complex [{Cu2L(O2CC5H4N)}. C2H5OH](x) (1), where H3L is a 1∶2 Schiff base derived from 1,3-diaminopropan-2-ol and salicylaldehyde, has been prepared and structurally characterized. The structure consists of a one-dimensional zigzag chain in which the binuclear [Cu2L](+) units are covalently linked by isonicotinate ligands to give a syndiotactic arrangement of the copper ions protruding outside the chain. In the basic unit, the copper(II) centres are bridged by an alkoxo and a carboxylato ligand, giving a Cu ... Cu distance of 3.492(3) Angstrom and a Cu-O-Cu angle of 130.9(2)degrees. While one copper centre has a square-planar geometry, the other copper is square-pyramidal with the pyridine nitrogen being the axial ligand. The visible electronic spectrum of 1 shows a broad d-d band at 615 nm. The complex shows a rhombic X-band EPR spectral pattern in the polycrystalline phase at 77 K. Magnetic susceptibility measurements in the temperature range 22 to 295 K demonstrate the antiferromagnetic behaviour of 1. A theoretical fit to the magnetic data is based on a model assuming 1 as an equimolar mixture of copper atoms belonging to an antiferromagnetically coupled one-dimensional Heisenberg chain with the other copper atoms outside the chain behaving like paramagnetic centres.

Copper(l) complexes of 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe) with a stoichiometry Cu-2(dppe)(3)(X)(2) [X- = CN- (1), SCN- (2), NO3- (3)] are obtained from direct reactions of CuX and dppe. The complexes are structurally and spectroscopically (NMR and IR) characterized. The structure of the [Cu-2(dPPe)(3)](2+) dication is similar to the structural motif observed in many other complexes with a chelating dppe and a bridging dppe connecting two copper centers. In complexes 1 -3, the anions are confined to the cavity formed by the phosphines which force a monodentate coordination mode despite the predominant bidentate/bridging character of the anions. The coordination angles rather than the thermochemical radii dictate the steric requirement of anions. While the solution behavior of 3, with nitrate, is similar to complexes studied earlier, complexes with pseudohalides exhibit new solution behavior. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. A copper(II) complex containing a NSO-donor Schiff base and NN-donor 2,2'-bipyridine has been prepared and structurally characterized. The square pyramidal complex with an axial sulfur ligation is a structural model for the CUB site of dopamine-hydroxylase in its oxidized form. The copper(II) complex is catalytically active in the oxidation of ascorbic acid by dioxygen mediated by a copper(I) species which is proposed to have a four-coordinate structure with a N3S coordination geometry.

Copper(l) complexes of bis(phosphine) monoxide ligands, bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane monoxide (dppeo) and bis(diphenylphosphino)methane monoxide (dppmo) have been prepared and characterized. One of the complexes with dppeo was characterized by X-ray crystal structure analysis confirming Cu(I) coordination to hard and soft donors. The stability of these complexes in solution was probed via spectroscopic and electrochemical studies. Copper(I) is more readily oxidized in the presence of the hard 0 donor ligands. In solution, they readily exchange the hard donor O, for soft ligands. Although copper(l) prefers soft ligands and is more stable towards oxidation in their presence, it coordinates to hard donors when there is electrostatic or an entropy driven advantage. Equilibrium concentrations of various condensed and gaseous phases have been thermodynamically calculated, using the free energy minimization criterion, for the metalorganic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) of copper films using bis(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptadionato)copper(II) as the precursor material. From among the many chemical species that may possibly result from the CVD process, only those expected on the basis of mass spectrometric analysis and chemical reasoning to be present at equilibrium, under different CVD conditions, are used in the thermodynamic calculations. The study predicts the deposition of pure, carbon-free copper in the inert atmosphere of argon as well as in the reactive hydrogen atmosphere, over a wide range of substrate temperatures and total reactor pressures. Thin films of copper, grown on SiO2/Si(100) substrates from this metalorganic precursor by low pressure CVD have been characterized by XRD and AES. The experimentally determined composition of CVD-grown copper films is in reasonable agreement with that predicted by thermodynamic analysis.

Ordered double perovskite oxides of the general formula A2BB′O6 have been known for several decades to have interesting electronic and magnetic properties. However, a recent report of a spectacular negative magnetoresistance effect in a specific member of this family, namely Sr2FeMoO6, has brought this class of compounds under intense scrutiny. It is now believed that the origin of the magnetism in this class of compounds is based on a novel kinetically-driven mechanism. This new mechanism is also likely to be responsible for the unusually high temperature ferromagnetism in several other systems, such as dilute magnetic semiconductors, as well as in various half-metallic ferromagnetic systems, such as Heussler alloys.

Copper(II) complexes Cu(satp)(L)] (1-3) of a Schiff base thiolate (salicylidene-2-aminothiophenol, H(2)satP) and phenanthroline bases (L), viz. 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1), dipyrido3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq in 2) and dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz in 3), were prepared, characterized and their anaerobic DNA photocleavage activity and hypoxic photocytotoxicity studied. The redox active complexes show the Cu(II)-Cu(I) couple near -0.5 V for 1 and near 0.0 V vs. SCE (saturated calomel electrode) for 2 and 3. The one-electron paramagnetic complexes (similar to 1.85 mu(B)) are avid DNA binders giving K(b) values within 1.0 x 10(5) - 8.0 x 10(5) M(-1). Thermal melting and viscosity data along with molecular docking calculations suggest DNA groove and/or partial intercalative binding of the complexes. The complexes show anaerobic DNA cleavage activity in red light under argon via type-I pathway, while DNA photocleavage in air proceeds via hydroxyl radical pathway. The DFT (density functional theory) calculations reveal a thyil radical pathway for the anaerobic DNA photocleavage activity and suggest the possibility of generation of a transient copper(I) species due to bond breakage between the copper and sulfur to generate the thyil radical. An oxidation of the copper(I) species is likely by oxygen in an aerobic medium or by the buffer medium in an anaerobic condition. Complex 3 exhibits significant photocytotoxicity in HeLa cells (IC(50) = 8.3(+/- 1.0) mu M) in visible light, while showing lower dark toxicity (IC(50) = 17.2(+/- 1.0) mu M). A significant reduction in the dark toxicity is observed under hypoxic cellular conditions (IC(50) = 30.0(+/- 1.0) mu M in dark), while retaining its photocytotoxicity (IC(50) = 8.0(+/- 1.0) mu M). Superoxide dismutase has been discovered within the periplasm of several Gram-negative pathogens. We studied the Cu,Zn-SOD enzyme in Escherichia coli isolated from clinical samples (stool samples) collected from patients suffering from diarrhea. Antibiogram studies of the isolates were carried out to determine the sensitive and resistant strains. The metal co-factor present in the enzyme was confirmed by running samples in native gels and inhibiting with 2 mM potassium cyanide. A 519 bp sodC gene was amplified from resistant and sensitive strains of Escherichia coli. Cloning and sequencing of the sodC gene indicated variation in the protein and amino acid sequences of sensitive and resistant isolates. The presence of sodC in highly resistant Escherichia coli isolates from diarrheal patients indicates that sodC may play role in enhancing the pathogenicity by protecting cells from exogenous sources of superoxide, such as the oxidative burst of phagocytes. The presence of SodC could be one of the factors for bacterial virulence.

The equilibrium decomposition temperatures of Cu2Ln2O5 (Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) compounds have been measured using a combined DTA-TGA apparatus under a flowing Ar + O2 gas mixture, in which the partial pressure of oxygen was controlled at 5.0 × 103 Pa. The Cu2Ln2O5 compounds yield Ln2O3 and Cu2O on decomposition. The decomposition temperature increases monotonically with the atomic number of the lanthanide element. This suggests that the stability of the Cu2Ln2O5 compounds with respect to the component binary oxides increases with decreasing radius of the Ln3+ ion.

The constitutive behavior of passivated copper films is studied. Stresses in copper films of thickness ranging from 1000 nm to 40 nm, passivated with silicon oxide on a quartz or silicon substrate, were measured using the curvature method. The thermal cycling spans a temperature range from - 196 to 600°C. It is seen that the strong relaxation at high temperatures normally found in unpassivated films is nonexistent for passivated films. The copper film did not show any rate-dependent effect over a range of heating/cooling rate from 5 to 25°C/min. Further analyses showed that significant strain hardening exists during the course of thermal loading. In particular, the measured stress- temperature response can only be fitted with a kinematic hardening model, if a simple constitutive law within the continuum plasticity framework is to be used. The analytic procedures for extracting the film properties are presented. Implications to stress modeling of copper interconnects in actual devices are discussed.

The present study was undertaken to assess the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in rat aortic ring vasoreactivity and integrity by using various peroxovanadate (pV) compounds. All the pV compounds (1 nM-300 mu M) used in the present study exerted concentration-dependent contractions on endothelium intact rat aortic rings. All compounds with an exception of DPV-asparagine (DPV-asn) significantly altered vascular integrity as shown by diminished KCl responses. Phenylephrine (PE)-mediated contractions (3 nM-300 mu M) were unaltered in the presence of these compounds. Acetylcholine (Ach)-mediated relaxation in PE (1 mu M) pre-contracted rings was significantly reduced in presence of diperoxovanadate (DPV), poly (sodium styrene sulfonate-co-maleate)-pV (PSS-CoM-pV) and poly (sodium styrene 4-sulfonate)-pV (PSS-pV). However, no significant change in Ach-mediated responses was observed in the presence of poly (acrylate)-pV (PM-pV) and DPV-asn. DPV-asn was thus chosen to further elucidate mechanism involved in peroxide mediated modulation of vasoreactivity. DPV-asn (30 nM-300 mu M) exerted significantly more stable contractions, that was found to be catalase (100 U/ml) resistant in comparison with H(2)O(2) (30 nM-300 mu M) in endothelium intact aortic rings. These contractile responses were found to be dependent on extracellular Ca(2+) and were significantly inhibited in presence of ROS scavenger N-acetylcysteine (100 mu M). Intracellular calcium chelation by BAPTA-AM (10 mu M) had no significant effect on DPV-asn (30 nM-300 mu M) mediated contraction. Pretreatment of aortic rings by rho-kinase inhibitor Y-27632 (10 mu M) significantly inhibited DPV-asn-mediated vasoconstriction indicating role of voltage-dependent Ca(2+) influx and downstream activation of rho-kinase. The small initial relaxant effect obtained on addition of DPV-asn (30 nM-1 mu M) in PE (1 mu M) pre-contracted endothelium intact rings, was prevented in the presence of guanylate cyclase inhibitor, methylene blue (10 mu M) and/or nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor, L-NAME (100 mu M) suggesting involvement of nitric oxide and cGMP. DPV-asn, like H(2)O(2), exerted a response of vasoconstriction in normal arteries and vasodilation at low concentrations (30 nM-1 mu M) in PE-pre contracted rings with overlapping mechanisms. These findings suggest usefulness of DPV-asn having low toxicity, in exploring the peroxide-mediated effects on various vascular beds. The present study also convincingly demonstrates role of H(2)O(2) in the modulation of vasoreactivity by using stable peroxide DPV-asn and warrants future studies on peroxide mediated signaling from a newer perspective.
